Like ZonalJump said, the vodka doesn't really add any flavor of its own. It's just that there are certain flavor compounds in tomatoes that only come out in the presence of alcohol. If you have a reason to avoid alcohol altogether go ahead and just leave it out, the sauce will taste fine.
in the Philippines, we have this pasta dish called sopas. It is basically a creamy chicken soup with some veggies, most people use elbow macaroni but you can use other short pasta like this one.

I tried the penne with vodka and it was no bueno . Tasted like a salty dry bolegnase. Nothing like what my Nonna makes but it was tolerable because I had already made it and forced myself to eat it.

do you have to put in the vodka for the alla vodka? can it be something different but still taste great?
You could leave it out, but the alcohol in vodka brings out a flavor in the tomatoes that no other liquid can bring out.
Kids can still eat this meal because the vodka is cooked with the other food.
