David Gilmour’s Overdrive Tones w/ PastFx Powerbooster (Best Overdrive?)

  • I've always been a fan of Gilmour's 1975-1977 harsh overdrive tones. That glassy, nasty overdrive sound. David Gilmour used Colorsound Powerboost for those tones. He started using it around 1972 and he used it till 1978 and probably still uses it in his studio. PastFx made an awesome clone of the pedal and you're going to see how you can get those harsh Gilmour fuzzy overdrive tones with this pedal!

    I built a pb kit years ago and love it. Considering it was one of the easiest pedals it’s fantastic. However it’s important to note that without the master volume control the power boost circuit very difficult to use for the average user especially on a pedal board where unity levels are important. So if you can’t afford one of these and have to search out a diy kit (like I did) be sure it’s got the master volume. I also used bc109 transistors for more gain ( the original has bc108). Also if the kit is a 9v version then use higher voltage capacitors and then you can run it at 18v. The reason I’m saying all this is that everyone should try and get one of these pedals but some people can’t afford it so may have to go down the diy route. Such a fantastic pedal and amazing review thank you. It’s great that there’s people like you sharing this information and making it accessible. I wish I’d have had an information source like this years ago when building my Gilmour rig. Well done!!

    Being a long time Pink Floyd fan & David Gilmours work myself and being 4 decades old guitarist I don’t know if you are into the time when it was Syd before David joined but I wanted to capture his sound as like David’s I found a pedal I bought way back and is called the Scarlet Tunic and works well to capture both sounds and still use it so maybe that would be something you would want to check out just like I think I I’ll check this pedal out.. thanks for showing and demoing it. Keep rocking the video’s as I have just now found you and awesome to meet another person that loves and tries to capture his sound and style. Keep rocking🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻 going to hit up your Pateron now! I just got the pedal today, and I think the real secret is to make sure your amp has a bit of gain too (when playing shine on and have a cigar)
    the pedal is very fuzzy, but a british style tube amp (I have a marshall sv20, it's not a hiwatt but close enough for what I want) is a lot smoother with that mid heavy tube drive sound
    also the old coloursound powerboost didn't have a level control, just a volume control which acted as both gain and volume, as you turn the "volume" control, the pedal's distortion would increase AND the output would increase, driving the amp
    now of course the hiwatt has high headroom and you need to get it very loud to distort, but david gilmour and the people who were there while he was recording the solos said themselves that he'd have the amp REALLY loud, and everyone would have to leave the room (apart from gilmour) while he was recording
    therefore, the real trick to every single gilmour tone is just balancing the distortion from his pedals and the distortion from your own amp
    the exceptions being his live tones where I think he had them set clean, which is why in wembley he would boost the fuzz face with the powerbooster to make up for that. it also kinda explains why his live tones sound quite a bit different besides the mastering and stuff they do in post
    even with the wall, I think it's big muff into slightly driven amp, the amp drive fattens it up and starts to smooth it and it's just about adding just enough gain to start to alter he fuzz tone

  • @philwalker79
    @philwalker79 7 місяців тому

    I'm on a similar journey as I just got the 'Comfortably Plum" pedal which is a dual pedal with a Rams head muff on one side and modded power booster on the other. I've been mostly just using the power booster side as blown away with the early Floyd sounds I can get. EQ's the Muff tone nicely when both sides used, working in a similar manner to the stackng with the fuzz face you demo in the video for the Time solo.

    ok i have to go into some detail here because holy cow these are some great tones. this pedal feels like the power boost as a whole 100% meaning that its spot on. that sheep tone was spot on. for using a 1 watt amp, using that pedal made it feel as if it were actually gilmour playing. that pedal covered great fuzz tones (even though its an over drive). that shine on tone was really close but it had the feel of the glassy weak but soul grabbing in first neck part and a powerful bridge pickup tone on the juicy part! on Wednesday last week i bought the td-y so i could do some gilmour stuff at my school. now im kinda starting to regret it but oh well! a pedal on my list for once i finally find a job to pay for it. finally i have to ask the question of, did you try it in the studio yet? past fx is on a role of making pedals that you can play in a bedroom set up all the way to a live concert with just the pedals itself!

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  8 місяців тому +1

      don't regret it, because td-y is the best tube driver clone in the market in my opinion. I use it for DSoT, PULSE, studio albums, gilmour's solo albums and gdansk. for pompeii 2016, I can't get the overdrive tones that well. I'll get more into this on my live at pompeii 2016 definitive tone guide video.
      what I mean is you can get %75 of the tones I got here. I haven't had time to go to studio and try it with a 20w amp, but I'll go this week because I'm really curious how this pedal reacts to more power.
      but what I expect is about the same with bit more clean headroom.
      edit: also, td-y has a huge gain. even on gain 9 o'clock, it gives a huuge sustain and clarity.

    try out the dunlop FFM1 for gilmour fuzz face tones, with boost it gets really close to wembly dark side tones (I'm using BD-2 for now), without boost it gets really close to pompeii, and with a delay in the front of it gets really close to time (studio version) cause placing a pedal in front kinda makes it have less gain, and little more glassy etc like time, slightly gated (also works with a univibe in front or phase 45 if you really want your delay at the end, which is what I do)
    I just got a les paul (technically PRS SE 245), so I'm gonna see if it can get close to shine on part 6 slide solo (I think he used a fuzz face on a lap steel that used humbuckers)
    time might be boosted in studio, I'm not sure, I havn't tried it yet with the powerbooster (I don't have one yet)

  • @Smurfman256
    @Smurfman256 7 місяців тому +1

    I recently got a Tru-Fi Colordriver 18v and now a whole bunch of sounds are finally starting to make sense.
    The way I've found it works best for me is that I'll crank the gain just up until the point where it starts caving in on itself, then back it off a little bit and use my guitar's volume knob to adjust the gain to taste. At about 7.5-8 is the Animals rhythm tone. Run that into a Ram's Head muff (not the other way around, Muff into PB is The Wall) with an Electric Mistress and that's David's lead tone for the In the Flesh tour.
    Keep in mind, though, my black strat not only has an SSL-5 in the bridge, mine is also particularly spicy at 14.83kOhms DC Resistance, so your mileage *will* vary.

    Hello, thank you for another great video! I love this type of circuit, especially after a Big Muff. This pedal looks/ sounds like it has many more tonal ootions than others plus works with smaller amps.
    More ootions of this tyoe of circuit... both larger and smaller amps:
    Tru Fi (USA), Colordriver, both 9v and 18vdc....may need bigger amp.
    George's Studio Equipment Overdriver and Colirdriver (Greece), 9v and 18vdc....may need bigger amp.
    Vick Audio (USA) Overdriver, 9vdc. Lots of great Gilmour pedals in his line.
    EHX (USA) Crayon, Full range overdrive. Will work as an affordable option and work better in bedroom setups, smaller amps.
    Question/Followup: Were you ever able to work out the customs issues with obtaining the Pulse Driver from Luca Columbo of Italy?
    Note: Lucas's " Bricks" pedal is a Big Muff + Overdriver combined... works with smaller amps...not sure about 1 watt though.

    • @mustyguitar
      @mustyguitar  8 місяців тому

      first, no, customs are always issue... but I'll go to italy at the end of march, I'll try to sort one out.
      EHX Crayon is not much of an alternative to my ears, I love the pedal, but I think it's more of a mix between tube screamer and tube driver. I've done some tests on eq board, it definitely boosts mid range quite a bit.
      I've contacted vick audio and tru fi, asking about dealers or amazon or thomann link or something, they didn't answer me. I'd love to try both of them but George's Studio Equipment is the first I'm hearing it. I should see that
