For my ear, the BD2 into the JHS are my favorite. I admit my bias, too. I have the BD2-W, and keep it on craft mode. I was struggling with the JHS CBrown for a while, and finally decided to do the same as you and just use it as a boost, and when I shifted my perspective and switched to using it as a boost, my playing opened up. Also trying the combination with an Ibanez MiniTS. Thanks for making such a fabulous video.
Thanks so much for this comparison, really good work was done! For me EHX Crayon sound really awesome in Have a Cigar rhythm, I want to listen to it again and again Also seems like TD-Y can do everything, for me it sounds like a universal pedal for PF tones But actually, I only have BD-2, and that’s enough for me ) Please make more videos like this!
Favourite is definitly the TD-Y, I bought one after seeing your review on it a few months ago. Some of my favourite tones are the really bright 2016 pompeii tones and I think it nails it the best.
Wow! What a great review! Thanks so much for putting such effort to compare these. I use Plexi and Crayon. I would say both are geared toward mid-influenced tones. In Crayon the manufacturer must have designed it to literally limit the high frequency transparency and as a result the payoff is smoothness. It's hard to beat that pedal in smoothness department. Also it limits some of the low end so it is useful for neck pickup or taming the fat tone of Green Russian (I put it downstream of Green Russian). For transparent ones (BD-2 and TD-Y) I think BD-2 has a fantastic uniqueness oozing that bluesy tone. TD-Y has a rounder sound and fatness frequency sit well with enough transparency (tone is carefully tailored) but it is a boutique pedal pricewise if I remember correctly. Charlie Brown is a very natural and mature sounding dirt pedal but as you tested the gain is limited so it reduces its versatility. May be for a non-Gilmour situation boosting it to a gained amp would reveal some of its potential. When you put them in series I felt you took away the beautiful transparency of BD-2. I would say if you like to get the good of both pedals since each pedal offer a bit different accentuation of frequencies put them in parallel. I use Y cable although buying a dedicated pedal for that is probably better for tone quality. I would say parallel setup of the king of transparency (BD-2) with the king of smoothness (Crayon) would be a great combo, or TD-Y and Crayon. I have a bit of gripe toward Plexidrive because its nasal 2k to 2.5k bump is so annoying, remind me of chihuahua yapping (mine is the beige color not sure may be it is the older version and they made it sound better later), may be because I was trying to get a bit more transparency of high frequencies and cranked up the tone knob too far but this pedal deserves to have a better EQ. I will couple it with a GE-7, will try to see if I can get better frequency balance next time. I also use Vick Audio Overdriver and that one has a transparency that can go well with EHX Crayon so I may just pass on the Plexidrive pedal. The other thing that makes me become tired of a pedal (in this case Plexidrive) is if it has too much compression because it creates a bit of pigeon hole for the tone character. That's why creating a parallel setup helps to put one transparent and less compressed tone pedal and one smoother / more compressed tone pedal together, and with changing playing technique you end up having lots of variations in tone and dynamics.
Blind taste test: Pedal C keeps coming up as the most euphonious. The others sound brighter. Maybe a bit too bright. All the way up to icepick in the ear bright. After test: Interesting. The Plexi-Drive. It was my favorite. Smooth and warm. Kind of reminiscent of _Pulse/Remember That Night._ Of course that's through _your_ amp and speaker. Through _my_ amp(s) and speaker(s) and with a slight nudge of a tone knob here or an EQ pedal there and this could all change drastically. Still, a worthwhile comparison video. Thanks for posting it.
I love all of your videos. Ive been to Gilmourish, and a couple of others. You however, give some actual comparisons so that when we are ready to dial in our tones, we have a better idea what we need to shoot for us mere mortals. Thank You
thank you Rick, though, you can't think like that, Mr. Bjorn is a professional musician (who happen to be one of my favorite guitar player), I just share what I like!
This video is awesome, and the format is really original with the blind test like this. Come to find out, I own 2 of the pedals in my top 3. EHX crayon sounds anemic to me. The versatility in the BD2 is immense as it can be the snarliest as seen here, or just a warm push.
Man, great video, as always! You really take the time to showcase all of them, and now it's your fault I want 2 more than I did! ^^ The BD is a classic of course, I didn't imagine it on PF but it does work. The Pastfx is great, I knew that from your previous video. But I was surprised by the Crayon, seems crazy good for the price! Should I wait though and just get the TD-Y, or maybe another G-2 clone (I'm getting into DIY pedals and found one...)?
So, I did buy the Crayon and the Blues Driver. :) No regrets there, especially for the Crayon: it's so polyvalent! I took my TS clone off of my board, this one can do that and much more. And BTW, the Charly Brown is the one that sounds the less interesting in your demo.
Congrats man, what an amazing video! Hard to find actual good gear comparisons these days. I'll be sure to check more of your content! Lately I've been looking for a solid overdrive for Pink Floyd and other 70's rock tones and this will sure help! Wampler PD and PastFX pedals sound amazing, had not heard of them. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work!
I've watched this 4-5 times now, and based on your video I think I'll rate them in the following order: 1. TD-Y 2. Plexi-Drive 3. Crayon 4. Charlie Brown 5. Blues Driver Even though I think the Plexi Drive and Crayon are somewhat equal, I think the TD-Y definitely is a bit better. But I could probably go for all 3. The blues driver is the only one I got of these, and it's my least favorite of these. But with your playing and tone skills you make everything sound awesome. I'm considering buying the TD-Y and maybe also the Crayon as alternatives to the BK Butler Tube Driver. How does the Boss OD-3 compare to these? Have you tried the TC Electronic Tube Pilot?
give some love to blues driver 😢 od-3 has a big mid hump, it's not as ideal as td-y or plexi-drive for gilmour tones, but like what I said with sd-1 in the video, od-3 can be of help if your amp is not responding well to mid scooped or flat eq pedals. I haven't tried tube pilot. when I think about tc electronics, all I see in my head is delay units, lol. they make excellent pedals probably.
Due to different things being played with different pick attacks and differences in how long notes are allowed to ring out, it makes it trickier to notices the differences, which I think was on purpose. But, if you listen closely you can hear it, aside from a couple that are definitely interchangeable, but might not be using a different guitar/amp/other pedals
The Crayon and the BD2 are the most economical and available of the bunch. They’re the two pedals I’ve used that can really come close to nailing both PowerBoost and Tube Driver tones. That said, if you want to go with the Crayon, spend a little extra and get the Hot Wax. It’s a dual overdrive of the Crayon and Hot Tubes. You can use them separate or together, and it’s so versatile. It also offers the Hot Tubes with a 2 band EQ rather than just one tone control. Both are so close to the PowerBoost (there’s something missing I can’t put my finger on), and the Crayon in particular comes extremely close to my Tube Driver.
you know Chrish, you're goddamn right. Hot Tubes is really good and I even own one, but I lend it to one of my friends so it wasn't on this shootout. I should check that he literally stole it from me probably...
Could have sworn D was the PLexi-Drive because it seemed to have more mids. But this test just goes to show how close different pedals can sound in a mix and that we maybe shouldn't obsess so hard over them.
@@mustyguitar maybe it's because you didn't use any post-EQ as you mentioned in the disclaimer, and this pedal has the least amount of highs (does it, by the way?) and it sounds a little bit more pleasant to my ears. Nonetheless I will definitely try this one, thanks!
Love the BD2, that i have...also the JHS pedal sounds good to my ears, thinking about getting the TD-Y, would it be worth already owning BD2 and Crazy Tube Circuits hi power?
Please get a Boss OD-200 to review. It's got like 10+ overdrives to choose from. It's a digital pedal, but most or all of the overdrive circuitry is analog. I'd love to see what you could do with a pedal like that. They're not too expensive either. You could just sell a couple of those overdrives you're not using.
