    • @TheSaifear
      @TheSaifear 6 років тому +27

      im not sure wheres the wisdom in this...
      I know the saying, but honestly I am thinking more like:
      "failure is to be expected. So trying is your only option."
      perhaps its about the cup half empty/full. For me its none of that, you can always get a new cup. called realist :D

    • @Holly5.0
      @Holly5.0 6 років тому +2

      TheSaifear Re the realist card on this line I usually play 'the cup is completely full; half is in a liquid state, the other is in a gaseous state'. And I suppose you could add some dark matter in there somewhere too :)

    • @LunarySSF2
      @LunarySSF2 6 років тому +22

      TheSaifear there's no wisdom in this LOL I don't think he was serious when he said this.
      This is like one of the worst advice you could tell someone
      Pretty much don't try anything because you might fail
      That's seriously the most pessimistic/demotivating quote I've ever read.

    • @r3doctave657

      From failure comes improvement. The worst failure you could have is death, which in a society is really f***ing hard to do without some a**hole trying to keep you alive!! xD

    *Constructive Feedback:* Best if you use "show cursor" on your videos. Psychologically we are wanting to see what you are leaning toward before you move, but instead we see the abrupt movement of a piece we were not expecting. Sometimes it goes so fast that we have to stop and backtrack for 5 seconds to see what happens.

    40 years ago when Ben and I were both members of the East Detroit Chess Club, one of my favourite things to watch was Ben playing blindfold speed. He gave the player who could see the board 5 minutes, he took one minute for himself. He called out his move and an assistant moved the pieces and hit his clock. He would sit and crack jokes while playing, and more often than not he would win on time or mate outright. The cliche` can be overused at times, but when we were watching Ben or playing against him, we knew " we were in the presence of greatness. " I have already tried to contact the St. Louis Chess Club, and I'm waiting to hear back.

    • @eggory
      @eggory 6 років тому +4

      Doesn't that also impact the difference between the points you gain and the points your opponent loses? If your rating is provisional and too high, for example, that indicates that by jumping into the pool and taking all of your corrective rating points from other players until you find your true rating, you would cause ratings deflation - I think? So by adjusting to make your games in particular less zero-sum, so that every game you win adds to the overall rating pool, that should help offset deflation. I'm kind of interested in the details of rating systems, but I'm totally talking out of my behind.

    When you played the Karo Cann opening at 12:30, I was curious about what it was. This has led me down a multi-hour rabbit hole that is nowhere near completion. First, I checked out the opening on ChessNetwork, creating my own personal study on LiChess so I could follow along. I noticed that he glossed over some of the variations such as the "advance variation" so I start looking that up and found even more variations, such as the "Two Knights Attack". After fumbling around on the internet, I found a 24 episode playlist by the youtuber "Hanging Pawns", each video between 10-20 minuites long detailing every variation of the Caro Kann opening. I also found a multitude of reasources relating to Grandmaster games playing each of the variations. My personal study is now over 18 chapters long and is nowhere near completion. Why did you have to nerd snipe me!

    Personally, although I liked the 1 minute very much, I liked it better when you had a little more time to think about your moves and your commentary in the 3 minute. But you can obviously do both.
