      Yeah, I don't know what is it about these cars.. I've driven many cars. Vw, Toyota, Chrysler, Nissan, Ford, Chevy, BMW, Audi Volvo.. Saab has never been on my list.. Until I test drove one's..., man!, I got so hooked.. I didn't wanted to drive anything else after.. I seriously don't know what is it about Saab. And.. soon after we purchased our 2004 Saab 93, I told my wife "we are a Saab family now.. We won't drive anything else..

      Lamster66 when gm bought saab they intended to keep saab alive as it's own brand with their stamp on the parts since gm is easier to come across since saab went belly up. it's nothing to do with gm "trying to be saab" they ARE saab lol well were until they finally retired them officially. gm has always been the "if its not broke don't fix it" dealers, there was no flaws with saabs key position so they simply left it alone 1. cause it wasn't an issue or broke 2. it made the cars harder to steal. gm was smart and kept it as original as possible

      I was going to point that out too, if any of the gauges (that are off) "require attention" they re-light. in my case 2001 2.2 TiD 93.
      The ignition also locks the car into reverse (park in auto) and cannot be removed until you do.

    Good video!! Yes very unique vehicle. I have own 6 myself and currently driving 08 convertible. One thing missed that’s really, really really cool about the engineering of SAABs is the ignition key. There is the cut key inside the key fob. The key fob has the electronic alarm and unlocks the doors and truck but if the battery dies in the fob, you can take apart the cut key and insert into the door or trunk and still be able to start the car with fob... So awesome!!!

    cup holders are always in weird locations in Saabs. But what i love about Saabs is the rim safety feature. Im not a pro car guy or anything but the fact that in each rim theres one bolt that must be taken out with a special tool to prevent people from taking your rims. Its Great.

    Key location is so in a car accident, your knee does not go into the key and you hurt yourself. That was the primary reason why it is placed there - but the reasons you give are side benefits. A quirk of the car missed here is that the turn signal sound is generated by the Harmon Kardon speakers rather than a separate device like most cars have. Also there are cup holders between the rear seats built in front of the seats that you pull out of the seat to use.

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  7 років тому +1

      Right! I forgot to mention the turn signals coming out of the speakers...it's very odd!

    great video, I have a 05 9-3 1.8i that I bought last summer and I love it. A quirky thing too is that the badges on the exterior wear down and the logo vanishes, but this is easily rectified by buying a new set on eBay. Because the car is mostly GM underneath it makes many parts easy to find, I replaced a Mass Airflow Sensor and a left side coil spring for peanuts. Engine parts are cheap too, as long as it's from the typical GM line, if you have a more idiosyncratic engine, like the 2.2 turbo, the prices go up, at least here in Ireland.

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  7 років тому +1

      Yeah I had to replace the badge on the trunk when I bought the car, but like you said, pretty easy and cheap fix. I usually only buy parts off of eeuroparts unless I can find what I'm looking for in a scrap yard

  • @papi-champoo6033

    another propose for the key being located on the center was for safety, in the event you were to get in an accident the key wouldn't hit your leg and injure you if the impact was really severe, also you forgot to mention the backseat cup holders.

    Had a 96, 1973 plate, so that would have been up against Ford Escort mk1, Vauxhall Viva, Renault 14,18,20?
    It had the 1500cc V4. one of the best cars I've ever had, I think it would only have struggled against an Escort mexico. Double wishbone suspension and trailing arms on the SAAB verses McPherson and LEAF SPRINGS....Much more powerful engine in the mexico though.
    I'd love to get a 2.3 turbo SAAB to replace my ageing Renault Megane 225.
    Strangely, watched your quirky video and the Megane has a lot of the same features.

    Nice video. Great to see you love your Saab. I grew up with them. My father had them and I caught the bug after I bought one of his from him. Last year, I finally said goodbye to my fourth 99 - from the last year of production (made in Finland in 1983). It finally got too difficult to find parts. Am looking for a nice low mileage 93 at the moment. All the best from the UK.

    A few more oddities
    1) If you have a locking gas door, you need to unlock it by opening the drivers door
    2) Some of them have an air conditioned glove compartment (sadly mine doesn't)
    3) The window washer jets are excessive (6 of them)
    4) Dumb DTRL, when valet parks car, they turn them off. Only way to figure it out is dash lights are out
    5) Pockets on the front edge of the seats are cool to keep small items
    6) On basic stereo, AUX is entered by pressing DISC twice
    7) When a tail light burns out, it uses the brake light to keep you legal until you can get it fixed
    I've owned a 2004 since new, and really enjoy the saabities. . .

    Bigger problem was that Saab was sold to the tiny company Spyker, who instantly struggled financially. If any of the bigger manufactures bought them, like FIAT, maybe there would have been a chance. Saab's big seller was always their mid size(9-3), just like BMW's big seller has been the 3 series. Saab had the just redone 9-5 which was said to not be fully polished design and their big seller 9-3 was introduced in 2003 and was getting very old. That 9-5 is gorgeous though, I get to see one every week in Chicago. I have a 2006 9-3, I love the car and sometimes think of searching for one of the last year 9-3's or the all wheel drive V6. Problem is it would be my daily driver and it's aged design is really showing. This will likely be my first and last Saab, but I had to get one because I always liked Saabs and it was the time to get one since they'll be harder and harder to find soon.

      I'm not sure if you know, but NEVS (who bought the naming rights) has promised 5 new cars by 2018, the first being a redesign of the 9-3 later this year...downside is, it's electric and will only be sold in Sweden and China for now. Also, V6 AWD 9-3's are going to be hard to find, but if you can find one, i'd snatch it up

    So many say the key is in the middle for safety --- don't think so but I love the location. When I bought a new Saab 99 in 1969, I asked why it was there. Saab said the government required either a steering lock or a shifter lock. Since Saab had used a shifter lock for years on the column shift 96, they stuck with that. And, hence, the key went to the floor when the shifter went to the floor. There was never any mention of safety --- just a later-invented logic that made good advertising. IMHO

    I was told that one of the reasons the key is in the centre is that if you are in a crash, & the engine is still running either the driver or the passenger can switch the engine off, so reducing the risk of fire

    I thought the reason for the key placement was to avoid jamming the key in your leg during an accident and danglisg keychains in your lap while driving. Also, all cars have a dimmer for the dash light. At least every car I've ever owned from the '70s until my '07 Saab

    • @AutoAutopsy

    Since we have a lot of comments on the 9-3 how about this one. BLUE Smoke from the exhaust. I had my car (2004 2.0t) for about 6 months when I sent it in for a service. Seemed OK but a little BLUE SMOKE was blowing from the exhaust (78,000 miles) and as the engine got hotter the smoke increased, it got really bad. So I thought, F*, Turbos gone! Anyway, all seemed to be running OK so I just got myself home, about 70 miles, it was embarrassing to drive and I loved the car. Anyway, when I got home I checked the oil and it was below minimum but still showing on the stick. I bought some 10w - 40w Synthetic oil instead of the recommended oil, the oil the garage had used, the car smoked for a while after but the oil consumption reduced and so did the smoke. I've now done another 15,000 miles with very little loss of oil although it still burns it a little if I floor it. The thicker oil saved me and the car is running fine. So, just in case it happens to you guys.
    A new Turbo will go in when I can afford it. In and out of work as I can't seem to get a decent job so limited funds but going for a service and some repairs this week (pads, disk, anti roll bar bushes), self employed as such as the only way I seem to be able to get an income but not having a proper job sucks, especially when you can't spend the money even on your transport except for the basics. I would love a 2.8T too.

    • @phillipdonnelly6430

      Yea, If I remember correctly. White smoke is water getting into the engine such as a blown head gasket and blue or grey is oil burning. Black is excess fuel.

    I've had four 9-3's starting in 2002. Have had my current '07 for 8 years. Oddities for me include a fuel gage that insists your tank is empty even when it's full (I zero out the trip odometer at each fill up and fill up again around 300 miles). Front end bulbs that "burn out" every six months even though sometimes they come back to life (the connections from bulb to socket corrode - use bulb grease when putting in new ones it helps). The front springs break easily (there was actually a recall for this) and they seem to break in pairs. I'm off to get another new set this week. BTW, the airbags are also on recall (thanks Takata). Other than that, there is a reason I stuck with Saab even after my first '07 was a certified lemon that stumped the dealer. They are great cars - Euro luxury and sport without the pretentiousness of a BMW.

    I think it's a bit odd that you point out the ski hatch as a quirky Saab feature. many other brands have them too. I owned a Lancia Lybra wich had that and I'm pretty sure that Volvo, BMW, Mercedes and many more use this in their sedans too. If I where you I would have mentioned the sounds from the engaged indicators which comes from the speakers rather then a clicking relais. Another fun fact, at the other side of the centre consol from the handbrake there is a detachable plastic cover. As an option you could get a ice scratcher that fits in the place of this plastic cover.

    If you think the Saab interior is quirky or unattractive, try looking at some of the Chrysler products from the early 2000's. Lots of cheap plastic and thoughtless design. Done for cost cutting as was explained to me by a guy who worked at the world headquarters in Auburn Hills, MI. Got to admit Chrysler has really improved dramatically now. I have owned over 15 Saabs and love them, in spite of the quirky little problems. My favorites are the 88 through 93 900's with the backward engine orientation. Please no derogatory replies about Mopar, I've just never had any luck with any of the six I've owned. Cost me a fortune with all the problems. One thing most aren't aware of are the epoxy painted brake lines on Saabs. I never replaced a brake line on a Saab.

    I had a 1973 99 4 speed manual. You had to put the car in Reverse to get the key out. Safety feature I suppose. Anyway, it constantly broke the keys off in the ignition. It seemed to be from the motion of putting the thing in reverse. After a while we got tired of replacing keys and fishing the nub out with a paperclip and just left it in there and started the car with the stub.....
    It was a cool car when it ran, but this was in the early 80's it it took everything to keep that thing going... The deathnail was when we went to get a couple of relays and they were over $100 each and had to ordered from Sweden! Glad I did it, but would do it again! lol

      Yeah i know, i just love the car, but i buy and sell cars, it has california plates and it is a monster on the road, i am thinking of just keep it, it drives well and i havent had any problems with it, just having a hard time trying to convice people of how nice this car is

      Then why sell? From what you're saying it sounds like you won't be able to make money on it. I'd just keep it as a daily ;)

    Saab goes in your genes if a saab fan gets a boy the boy will be a saab fan and when the boy gets a boy the new boy will also be a saab fan

    A little too heavy on the generalizations...
    There are Saabs without night panel and with the key in the standard steering column location

      The only modern Saab without the key in the center is the 9000

    This is an older video but I’m about to buy one of these possibly so I’m curious, does it have an aux port for music?

    Can you make a Video with a SAAB 9-5 , 2.2 TiD. - General Review of the car
    Cuz you're doing a far better review than OLD SAAB OWNERS ...

      Auto Autopsy yeah if u can't find a 9-5 , with a diesel engine for a review , then it's all right to go with petrol one.
      but try the diesel instead , the 2.2 tid version , it wil be more fun i believe,
      don't like the 1.9 tid CamBelt engine from fiat.

    The thing I hate most about mine... other than the gas mileage... the turn signal is incredibly obnoxious.

    If I would live in the U.S. I would look for a Saab 9-2 X, mostly because it's a re-badged Subaru Impreza WRX Wagon with an STI steering rack and other goodies

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  7 років тому

      Yeah the 9-2x isn't really a Saab in my mind though; like you said, a rebadged Subaru

    • @MadMonroe90
      @MadMonroe90 7 років тому

      Just like the Saab 9-7 X which is a re-badget Chevy Trailblazer... The 9-2 X isn't a true Saab, we can both agree on this, but despite this I kind of like it because it's unique

    How do You find the night vision button in the dark? Not only SAAB had a dimmer-button for the dashboard. I believe the first example I saw was in a Mazda 929 in the 70s. If my mind does not trick me it was also a feature in my Toyota Camry.

    • @AutoAutopsy
      @AutoAutopsy  7 років тому

      The button is illuminated, so it's not hard to find. Also, I am making a video going more in-depth on night panel, which should be out later this week :)

      Auto Autopsy
      u forgot something about night panel.
      if it is In dark mode and u get some warning the gauge will automatically turn the light on that specific gauge.
