    I literally don’t understand how the name exploits elephants. Even if the myth was exploitative (from what you’ve said here, questionable. At worst it’s an incorrect piece of elephant trivia) how does that make the name exploitative? How is naming something after a myth exploitative? It’s just a fun, nonsense name that connects to their key ingredient.

    I told them that their hydra b5 wasn’t enough, so I use a toner/essence, and they told me I couldn’t because toners and essences have fragrance. They weren’t about to hear about ones that didn’t.
    Never trust a brand that says you can’t use products from other brands.
    Edit: after coming back to this video, I realized that the drama does not affect the products. They’re still amazing, and I don’t have a problem purchasing them just because of horrible customer service. I’ve worked in customer service for a long time and I know that things aren’t always as they seem. I understand why people are “cancelling” this brand, but they’re evolving and I’d rather use products I know and trust.

    • @michellemichael1676

    • @modernaristocracy3641
      @modernaristocracy3641 4 роки тому +28

      Michelle Michael, they had no reason to assume the products I used had fragrance. They did tell me that my skin problems would not go away until I only used products they approved of, and of course recommended their products. That was years ago, when I bought their entire line out of desperation. My skin was dry and irritated after a few weeks because the chemical exfoliants were damaging my skin barrier. They blamed my acne, dryness, and irritation on the fact that I once used a moisturizer that contained silicone. Maybe they didn’t explicitly state that I couldn’t use other brands, but it was definitely implicit that they were the only ones I should trust.

    I love that people get super excited about learning things! (Ingredients, history, etc..)
    I remember when the retinol first came out. I had question as a skin nerd and they did not disrespect me. They didn’t dis-credit me either.
    They were patient and very polite/pleasant.
    I’ve always had a philosophy: what works for some doesn’t work for others. I’ve never experienced the social media attack/customer service attack.
    I kinda feel like the max flux in people trying it; the traffic, is more than the customer service team can handle. (No excuse for these attacks as you put it) so maybe a more structured and supportive head of HR needs to be considered.
    I’ve worked in this atmosphere for a while now, and the sad thing despite how it all plays out is how everything is a witch hunt.
    You’re a very savvy and smart individual. I believe in freedom of speech and respectfully listening to people’s views.
    Honestly your money and your choice has always been a motto. I just wish people would go back to educating instead of influencing. (It’s a double edged sword with how you take on these such issues)
    But in the end you lowered yourself a little when you wanted to educate by taking a jab here and there with this presentation.
    State the research and facts you’d like to hit on by anything that you encounter with a negative. Always stay positive and then the “content” has a solid purpose.
    I still enjoy the research and passion you give.
    But slightly concerned if this is going to be a continued characteristic(s) of what’s to come in your content.

    I used to be a HUGE fan of Drunk Elephant. I used to own all of the products and used to turn all of my friends & family onto the brand. I think now that we're a much more understanding community and we are able to make decisions for ourselves without needing all this marketing thrown in our face it hurt brands that rely on marketing, or packaging. We've become aware of ingredients and I would say most of us have the tools to understand them (Hyram, Susan, Cassandra, etc...). I think what Drunk Elephant does is insane to me. When you touched on the point of how their philosophy of "all skin issues are the same" really REALLY bugs me. I would love for my rosacea to be just a reaction to my skincare products, but ITS NOT. Everyone in my family has it and no amount of cute names and sleek packaging will change my skin.

      B hydra wasn’t hydrating enough for me, so I had to PILE it on to get enough hydration. Hada labo lotion is an amazing product. It’s available on amazon, $12-15 for a giant bottle. It’s a clear liquid with tons of hydrating ingredients and comes in different intensities for different skin conditions. If you want a brand that sells officially in the U.S., try some Korean brands. Many of them are available online, or in Ulta or Sephora. They’re more affordable than American brands but tend to be fragrance free and have great ingredients. Just look for the word “essence.” I hope this helped; if you have any questions, I’ve been into skincare for a long time and could likely answer questions you have :)

    The DE owner's whole argument that all skin is the same makes no sense. So why create a plethora of products designed to target specific skin conditions and skin concerns? They have a bunch of products targeted for dull skin, acne-prone skin, dry skin, etc. but it why would they have those products if apparently, these conditions don't really exist according to the owner?? If the owner truly believed that bizarre "fact" she would've just needed to create 4-5 products period.

      Thanks so much for your comment on this. If I may share a bit more of an explanation: yes, I am very aware that Africa is a continent and I am familiar with the different countries within Africa. While doing research for this video, the scientific article in the Journal of zoology specifically mentioned particular countries, within Africa, where this phenomenon was happening and research was occurring. When I was filming the video, (and having this study as a reference in my head), I said “exploiting a country”, and it wasn’t until I was editing that I realized this mistake, because although the study related to this specific area, the phenomenon is happening throughout the continent, in multiple different countries. I tried to correct this with an asterisk but I completely understand how it comes off a different way. It’s never my intention to offend others, or to try to spread misinformation. That being said, coming from America, we never even had to learn the countries in Africa. (Disposable of your ask me) That was something I did on my own later on in my educational career. I don’t blame people for looking at this brown hair, green eyed chick from America and thinking that she wouldn’t know the difference. Great video! As a cosmetic chemist - I wanted to chime in on the cruelty-free aspect. Chemists and their regulatory team request cruelty-free international documentation from every supplier of every ingredient in their formulas. Then those documents need to be renewed every year in order to keep that status for a brand. Just because a brand is purchased by a company that is not cruelty-free, does not mean that the brand is no longer cruelty-free or will not maintain that status in the future. I actually think a brand is more likely to maintain that status with a larger company since there are more regulatory resources to maintain it - especially if the cruelty-free claim is important to the brand’s equity.

From not being transparent about their "donations" and straight up telling us that "We dont have any connection to Africa" when asked how she chose the idea and name for the brand (yeesh). Her answer for many things too, when questioned about ingredients and name ideas, she said, straight faced, "I went on to google and just translated things into a different language".

    • @georginachan9725
      @georginachan9725 4 роки тому +1

      There's actually nothing wrong with silicones in skincare. They are simply occlusive ingredients that trap moisture in your skin therefore they do benefit your skin by decreasing the transepidermal water loss. They're no worse than any other occlusive ingredients. Actually they're great for oily skin because they're very light and breathable. Obviously they may trigger acne for some people but so everything else can. The plastic wrap thing is a common myth that comes from 'natural/organic' skincare philosophy.

I’m so over the stories created by the marketing and PR agencies hired by beauty companies to create a brand image that appeals to our values so they can sell, sell, sell. Even those that may start with the right intentions often go south. What I’d really like to know is whether Drunk Elephant is now made in China? It made a big story of being made in the US. Have searched high and low for a statement from Shiseido rejecting this, but can’t find one. Why is there silence about this? Also some of Drunk Elephant’s products are not vegan, given they’re derived from animals.

    Last year, the former founder of Deciem (now deceased) had posted a dig at the CEO of Drunk Elephant over the overpriced marula oil they were selling months before his death. Of course, we know that the Ordinary had its own version of marula oil which was way cheaper. I think that in all honesty, the overpricing of products to give the illusion of its goodness is misleading to the consumer public, not to mention outright stupid. Some of their products are generally good from a dermatological point of view as I have read, and I have used one or two of them too. However, I still cannot get past their bad attitude towards their customers online, and their overpricing of products.

      I’m extremely leery of super expensive products. It’s absolutely ridiculous how much they charge for some skin care products. Especially when the ingredients are not expensive. I’ll be 44 this year. Now I’m into skin care always have been. But in all honesty I can flat out say I know it’s my genetics, I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. We age differently than others... if I were to say oh my god this cream is awesome you should use it, keep your skin useful and tight. I’ll be doing that person a disservice. Another thing I can’t stand in the skin care room they always choose people that are young and have superb skin. And God for bid if they don’t put a Botox penned up cut up sliced up diced up woman that’s an elder for their skin care line...

    Wow, I didn't know this about Drunk Elephant. Thank you for speaking about it.
    I've also struggled with acne and skin sensitivity and was so excited for DE to be available in Australia, as soon as Mecca launched this brand I bought almost everything that was available at the time, including TLC serum, hydra B serum, both soaps and also received a deluxe sample of C- Firma serum recently. I wanted to love these products so bad but each one caused the same reaction, small red bumps all over my face filled with something that looked just like water but I'm not entirely sure what it was. I've tried each product multiple times because I didn't want to believe that the reaction I was getting was from DE products, but sure enough I've reacted each time and as soon as I would stop using those products my skin would heal withing a few days. The only few products that didn't cause a reaction was c-tango under eye cream and soaps, however I've noticed my skin texture got a lot worse when I was using soaps and my skin also was all over the place, so I stopped using soaps too. Also after watching this video I don't feel like purchasing c-tango cream ever again, even though I loved it but price is just too high - it's $93 AUD or something ridiculous like this.
    Thank you again for the video 💖

    Great video! Drunk Elephant has a true cult following....or maybe it's just a cult 😬 Anywho, everything I've ever tried (only ever sampled, never purchased) has left me underwhelmed.

    I really REALLY hope this becomes widespread knowledge! I almost bought a couple DE products at the Sephora sale but came across their unprofessionalism just in time!

    You're seriously offended that she named her brand Drunk Elephant? Wow. That just seems really nitpicky.

      It’s their opinion, and it’s okay, it’s probably just her and a few others.

    I had the worst experience with this product. DO NOT BUY. I'm now having to deal with a burning rash around both my eyes..hopefully in a few weeks it will be healed. I'm regretting not seeing these videos earlier!!!

    Love it!! Please do one on Some By Mi too. I want to purchase their products, but I am so nervous. I have very sensitive skin. I'm using The Ordinary's products to help my acne and acne scars. I heard Some By Mi is great, but I'm afraid to use "too" many products on my skin.
