Atelier Ryza is my favorite in the series so far. I feel like they took the level of polish to such a high level and I enjoyed how fun and low stakes the beginning was. I got to live my fantasy of being a neophyte alchemist lol.

Ryza and Sophie are split for me. I love both of them. Though I do agree that Ryza has some polish to the overall game compared to the others.
I'm loving how Ryza 3 is looking, loving every bit of it.

Time-limits never made the games less relaxing for me and they were always tied in with the story. Gust's music are consistently great and tend to get overlooked.

    • @MandyleePlays

I can agree with that to some extent but I still prefer no time limit lol
Also yes Gust music is amazing and it’s sad it gets overlooked in JRPG circles it definitely deserves more love!!

Thank you so much for this video! I'm currently playing the 1st Ryza game, and I have Sophie 2 in my backlog. I have the other games on my list, but I prefer physical games, so collecting will be slow. This has helped me prioritize what to get next in this series.

I just recently picked up and finished _Ryza_ after getting frustrated with my ineptitude during my second _Elden Ring_ run. There is simply nothing frustrating or annoying about these games. I frequently find a smile growing on my face just from normal play. The game and characters are just really fun and endearing. _Ryza's_ plot does get a bit serious, but there's none of the melodrama of so much other JRPG fare out there. Chill and cozy, like you said. 😊
    Now on the _Ryza 2..._

Ryza's bubbly personality also contributes to the calming nature of her games. I'm glad that you were able to find time to kick back after a tumultuous session in Elden Ring. I can never see myself playing my game lol.

My favorite game from the Atelier Series is Mana Khemia, but like you've said, it's so hard to find the earlier games! So I really really hope they decide to remake at least Atelier Iris, since that is the game that got me into the Atelier series and JRPGs in general.

I started with Totori because it was the first game I heard about back in 2011, I wasnt too keen with the story and the time limit, then I realized it was the second game in the quadralogy so I tried Rorona and liked it better, I later replayed the series in order and ended up liking it so much! Currently playing through Sophie as I make my way to the most re ent entry, my favorite game so far is Escha & Logy

I haven't really dived into the Atelier series, but I did get Atelier Sophie (the original version) on Steam some years back. That opening cinematic with the very adventurous sounding song hooked me right away. so I had to buy it.
I never did fully figure out the alchemy system, but I reinstalled the game a little earlier, and I'm gonna give it another go.
As for the combat system, I actually appreciated it. A lot of the turn-based games out there seem to be tailor made for people who want a seriously deep and technical take on it, but for me, that kind of stuff gets confusing or cumbersome. Atelier Sophie's more direct, old school approach is way more my speed.

@MandyleePlays took the advice to try out Ryza. I'm having fun so far, with the largest threat being a scolding from mom, haha. Little bit frustrating how many invisible walls there are, even between 2 clearly walkable portions of the map. No young lady, you can not step down from those rocks, despite the drop being less than your vertical jump height.
      ?????
Very minor gripe, but I found myself going "trials of mana would let me jump that, or walk there."

A newbie friendly intro on point. Really clear and informative on all points mentionned. Thanks to you for putting it out there for any wannabe alchemists.
Juste one point on which i have to disagree : alchemy in a ryza is not more basic, or simple, as opposed to atelier sophie and the likes. It’s only my opinion but i feel like more « abstract « is the correct term. I get the enjoyment from that tetris like feeling in sophie, and the pleasure of solving that visual alchemy. However, alchemy in ryza is , in my opinion, way more complex and deeper, in that it gives way more options and choices to create a truly unique item (the way traits works, the way you are limited in the number of item you can use to create your own which is a puzzle in itself) whereas in sophie game (for instance) you end up with a very similar item to those made by other. I feel like player agency is kind of reduced in those cases. And also, the way ryza let you recycle your unused item and material through gems is a benediction that make you feel that none of your time is wasted and that everything you do will empower your skill as an alchemist, which i feel is a system missing from sophie (not quite finish the game yet, i might be wrong about that)
Anyway, thank you for your hard Work , and i wish you the best 4 your channel and your atelier experience 😙

Ryza is the best game for beginners in my opinion. No time limit, a very easy-to-understand alchemy system, and of course a fleshed-out tutorial. @@MandyleePlays I had a similar thought namely because I can't think of much coming out in March that appeals to me, so it's good to know it would fit in well there.
At the same time, that gap might be good for finishing up a couple of playthroughs of DA:I (yes I have two different playthroughs neither of which is complete that I sometimes alternate between) or revisiting Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. Hard to say. I'll see what headspace I am in at the end of Octopath.

I got myself into the Atelier series through some of the most arguably weird routes you can take. Because I started off with the "Ar Tonelico" series, which was a more action oriented game based or at least developed in tantum with the Mana Khemia mechanics with a more complex and "meaningful" or classic JRPG story. Ar Tonelico also had a crafting system, but it was very neatly done and I was kind of fond of it. Most RPGs crafting mechanics are kind of garbage to be honest, so Ar Tonelico build in it's crafting into the story and the items were pretty useful ans to some degree customizable. Rewarding even.
Naturally, after playing though AT, I stumbled upon Mana Khemia which was very familiar in it's style and VN like story telling, but more focused on the crafting and alchemy itself. This then sparked my interest for Atelier Iris where I took a quick glance at and decided to give the highly praised Atelier Ryza it's chance. I was actually conflicted at first if I should start with Ryza or Sophie, but went with Ryza due to graphics.
Right now I'm playing Ryza 2 and I'm having a blast so far. I really love games where I can just chill out, take my time and do things at my own leisure. But I kind of want to get a bit more from a story perspective, which is why I think I'm going for Atelier Iris again after finishing the Ryza series. In general I think that - even though Atelier has a huge count to their game series - the games themselfes are kind of underappreciated, especially with a western audience. I know it sounds weird with 24 games in the series, but I still feel like that. Perhaps this stems from the fact that just one friend I know did actually play an Atelier game. At least I was able to con some people into playing Ar Tonelico, which they loved afterwards. Hm. They should also love Atelier if my understanding of how I came to like the series holds true, but no one is giving it a shot for real, I guess.

    • @MandyleePlays
      @MandyleePlays  Рік тому +1

I've been meaning to try Ar Tonelico, but my means on how I should play is kind of limited. I don't have a PS2 or a PS3 😅. The same goes for Mana Khemia. Though with the Atelier Marie remake, I hope we get remakes of the older games down the line. I wanna try the older games before the Arland series, but inaccessibility is what holds me back.
Though if you want to try another game made by Gust, you should look into Blue Reflection. It's a magical girl RPG series if you are into that. Doesn't have the alchemy mechanics like Atelier, but at least it a smooth sailing game that respects your time.

The other day I was just talking about games with a more chill atmosphere like Harvest Moon / rune factory and somehow ended talking about Ar Tonelico which also has a crafting system and a visual novel like side in it's mechanics to unlock more poweful songs (this game's spells)
    .
So He told me to try the Atelier series which were also made by Gust, and here I am.
    .
I might as well begin with Ryza or Sophie I guess.
    Thanks for the video.
It really was overwhelming when I found out how many games this series has.

I just bought Ryza 3, and before I even played it I bought 1 and 2 in that series. There are other games I need to finish and play but when I get to this series I was planning on playing them backwards, 3 first because it’s the newest, then 2, then 1. Unless someone thinks that would be bad.

    • @MandyleePlays
      @MandyleePlays  Рік тому

Although 3 is a good game because it gives you a truncated story of the first two games. However, as a fan, it does miss a lot of nuances in the first two games. Some characters would be unfamiliar, and what happened to them in the first two games.
So in short, you could start by playing 3, but afterwards, work your way up by starting Ryza 1 so you can pick up certain story aspects the recap didn't pick up on

That really depends on which game and IF ANY of them have a EASY mode though Mana Khemia the first game is around 25 to 30 hours its sequel will take longer then that since theirs 2 main party members each one with their own party and in Mana Khemia 2 its NG+ runs only unlock after you beat BOTH Routes AND ITS Post game bonus dungeon so that one is around 40 to 50 hours to do everything.

Question: on the switch store they sell a bundle called the mysterious trilogy, which is Sophie, Firis, and Lydie and Suelle. Do you know why Sophie 2 is not included in the sequence, and (without spoilers) what would I be missing if I bought the bundle and skipped Sophie 2?

Hey, thanks for the great feedback on the video. Always appreciate it when people try out the series.
In terms of your Question about the Mysterious trilogy bundle. The bundle came out before Sophie 2 was even a thing. Sophie 2 was released after Ryza 2. Sophie 2 It is still part of the Mysterious Quadrilogy but it was released way later after Lydie and Suelle.
Chronologically Sophie 2 happens right after Sophie 1 then it's Firis and Lydie and Suelle.
