That Skyline Drive is beautiful...I think. Wonderful that you got to take the trip. We went on that drive during our college geology field camp in CO and I had to drive it with an old Dodge Power Wagon, no power steering, no power brakes and a stick shift. I was about 5' 7", 150# and it was all I could do to handle that beast over that road. Terrified the whole way. Didn't really get to see the scenery for trying to steer that thing on that narrow road!!
Adam, the Mollie Kathleen mine is the tourist mine that you are probably thinking of that is abandoned. However, there is a huge open pit mine still operating. You can see the shovels and trucks from the overlook that is an old haul truck bed.
Fabulous video!! From Colorado and new friend from Canon took me up there. A jaw-dropper drive with no mountain on both sides of you so you're driving the ridge. Yeee oww!
I love going over Skyline Drive. I have been on it many times, mostly on motorcycles but also in my Corvette. I went over it a couple of times after dark on the motorcycle. What a great view. BTW, I don't live very far from you. I am in Brewton.
Very nice. The climb up reminds me of Mount Scott near Lawton, OK. The road is a little wider there because it's two way but closer to the edge with lots of rails. Have to remember to be careful for rattlesnakes when you are walking around though, had a friend who's daughter was bit by one while out walking around near the top of Mount Scott years ago. Gotta get the head gasket in my truck fixed before I can do anything like that though. Just getting by for now. Edit: I think you guys would love staying there sometime. www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10038733 Be able to get up and see turkey and deer roaming around the campground and go for a short drive and see buffalo and maybe get lucky and see the elk out and around.
My husband and I drove on this road accidentally. We had no clue what we were getting into. Wonder if they still have the little white crosses down the side of the mountain where cars have gone off?
Really enjoyed your video! Absolutely beautiful scenery! Been to Cripple Creek at the casino when my mom and stepdad took me and my niece Chantle back in 1996, she was 5. We went to Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone and came through Cripple Creek. Wonder why they have no rails on the sides of the roads
Adam. I was born and raised in Colorado. You’re visiting a lot of my favorite places to go. I left at 18 to serve our nation and still serve today. That was 1985. Thank you for the memories. Oh yeah. We pronounce it canyon city. The n is has an enya as in pinion. Hope you can make it back to Buena Vista. Visit Mount Princeton Hot Springs. Also, the Great Sand Dunes are amazing. Can’t believe you didn’t go to the cave of the winds. The cliff dwellings are right next door. Did you drink the manitou spring water?
I have to tell you I enjoyed the train ride I took the auto train from va to Florida great trip I had my own room with room service talk about cool my grandfather worked fo the railroad in pa as kids we down the station and watch the trains go by
I used to work as a plant operator, at the WN Clark Plant, that was tore down on the corner of the highway, to the south of Sky Line Dr. that old plant used to provide 30 cycle to the mines in Cripple Creek and Victor. Long gone now, was a coal plant at that site forever.
I really liked the dinosaur footprints (ankylosaurus?) on that wall. I thought you would have stopped and mentioned them. We drove it a little faster on the fun parts, I would post it but it was mostly my wife screaming.
If you want a real thrill and you like change you can drive up Rocky Mountain Boulevard out of Florence cross us 50 and you're going straight up Phantom Canyon on the old railroad bed. You will drive over the triple trestle that was built extra wide so that the Narrow Gauge could have a three-stage bridge for the train to curve. It goes to Cripple Creek and it's grated smooth road all the way you don't need a Hummer to get up there. You also drive through the original train tunnels with a streak of black smoke down the center of the roof. Choose your poison!
I worked with a guy that lived in Colorado for a few years and he told me about skyline drive. He said he liked to take it at night on his motorcycle. He said it felt like he was flying because of all the places where all he could see in his peripheral vision was the night sky and stars. I took the drive with my family (during the day) and they were very nervous. That was about 25 years ago and I don't think it was nearly as developed as it is now.
James Wuertele my other half was looking at land at some point before we met and kept coming across Lazy A, Lazy T type ranches and thought it would be a funny name. I ran with it. 😀 The snow has been lovely, but is getting in the way of construction haha. It’ll be gone by Friday ❤️
Abbys seat tightened up by getting close to the edge. The wife and I traveled in a new Dodge pickup 20yrs. Ago, we had a great time. North Carolina, Virgina, Maryland, Tennessee,West Virgina, Pennsylvania, New York, Maine.
You missed the dinosaur footprints! Goto about 2min and 40 seconds and look at the rock in the left top corner of the screen. That is the bottom of a fossilized riverbed with dino prints in the mud!
There's a road that goes east out of Canyon City to their City Park which is actually 15-20 minutes up a canyon. All I'm at Drive is a dinosaur dig with plaques and you can get out and look. It is a site where you can go to the college or something like that and register to go on a dig. Some people just get out of their car and start picking at things. I went there with my ex-wife when I visited the kids and had a great time but check with local law enforcement before you dig I don't know the particulars
More to see in Colorado. Still more in Utah, Arizona, and Montana. Gota dig the vast open spaces. Especially down southwest(Arizona-California). ...and, of course, there's the great state of California. The Sierras there are great, but they do get dry...not as green as Colorado and Montana...but fewer mosquitoes.
Wow, that's a crazy road right along the ridge line. I heard on the news this morning that Denver might get snow on Tuesday. The high is supposed to be 37.
Thanks for this video!my 1st one of yours I watched. And perfect We're heading there in 2weeks and I wasn't sure if my Tahoe was going to fit the road. some of the reviews say small vehicles only.....looks amazing and scary but by you showing everything I think I can do ! Thanks again! How was the waffle wagon? Was it worth it? Hugs and luv from my family to yours, Stay blessed!! 🙌
Definitely take the drive! It’s so awesome! Be sure to stop at the available pull offs and enjoy the scenery. There’s some dinosaur bones you can take a short walk to. Also be sure to take the Royal Gorge Route Railroad train. We’ve done it twice and we have videos on our channel of that plus the Royal Gorge Bridge and also the Shelf Road scenic drive. So an amazing place!
Wayne Spyker That geological feature is just a plate of bedrock pushed up at an angle by the same process that pushed up the continental divide. Basically the road is along the edge of the plate. It’s just one of many attractions in the area.

Thanks for the time lapse of Skyline Drive overlooking Slammer City :-)
I would really hate to meet someone going the wrong way on that road. LOL Scenery looked beautiful thanks for taking us with you. Happy Labor Day!
If you go the wrong way, then you have to back up

Up before the sun, again. Love the trip. Not much road width going up and around the mountain. Makes you pay attention! Be careful.
Dont forget to get some of those great Colorado shirts: the ones with the big "C" and three stripes.

Adam, Now that you and Abby are leaving, it is pronounced like canyon city. The tilde over the N gives it a Y sound in spanish. ;-)
Been there! Definitely not a drive for the nervous or timid 😂.
Can it be done in the evening as to have the sun set ahead of you?

We didn’t make it to Victor
I worked with a guy from Victor Jack Lorenz. He’s Long passed, but he grew up in Victor. He had a beautiful kept house up there.
I kinda surprised that, so far, no one has asked if you found any Swift trucks trying to drive that road 😉
