This is so cool ! Nice to see a couple going out together Hiking,Camping;etc ! My wife and I TRY to do the same ! It's fun to sit around the campfire and talk gear with a lady now and then ! It's also good that she know's the gear so if something ever happened to you on the trail she can pickup the slack ! Plus it's just down right sexy when a girl talk's gear, and isn't afraid to get her hand's dirty ! Awesome ! Have fun, stay safe ! Thank's for posting !
I have been through two msr cook systems and both broke down. I use the jet boil system now and it is the bomb. My wife and I have very similar gear but we have collected it through the last 25 years of camping and canoeing. I am a big fan of the single carry portage. It reduces both time and gear because you want to keep it light.
Hi Dave, Great suggestion. Michelle received this chair for X-mas, so the rest of us Two-Canoer's will let her do the test run on our first trip this season. We've all collected so many different chairs, this one looks like it may the best of them so far.
Thanks, we have made use of duct tape on several trips to make quick repairs. So we like to make sure we always have enough. For the canoe gear video we used a Nikon D5000 SLR. For all our other videos we use a combination of this camera, a Canon T1i, our iPhones and a Flip. It really depends on what is the closest and ideal at the time we record.
Glad you enjoyed the video! I'm kind-of a gear geek. André and I can cruse MEC for hours, and we usually don't even buy anything, we just like to look. Oh, and camping in the wilderness can definitely bring a couple closer together, especially if you have a two man tent!
Great video... I am taking my gf.. on her first river run and back packing trips this spring... been making gear list for us to go over this weekend... ur stuff almost matches mine exactly... so I shared this on her facebook... might be less boring then my list... thanks.. :)
I am going to northern saskatchewan in a few weeks on a 4 day canoe trip. I am super confused on what to bring but this video helped quite a bit. I am super excited, I hope it is lots of fun.
Great video. (I want to go right now!) Some suggestions on chairs - I use a canoe seat, not only do they provide some cushy back support during the actual paddle, they become my camp chair. Like the therm-a-rest chair these sit right on the ground or on the benches at the site but a re quite comfy. I leave mine strapped to the canoe when i'm carrying it so it's not extra bulk in the pack.
Thanks for the comment and the subscription :) Hiking is definitely not for everyone. That is why we like canoeing as opposed to backpacking. It's great to sit and paddle a relaxing pace and not have to carry everything all the time. Perhaps you can convince your gf to do a canoe trip that doesn't involve hiking/portaging? - Anthony
A nice run-through of your gear. It covers all the essentials. And I`ll second what MrRubrics said earlier - bear spray`s a good idea, but keep it on you in a belt holster for those portages. Evidence-based studies (as opposed to mere lore) shows that bear spray is the best defense should you have an unpleasant encounter with a black bear. I hasten to add that I have never had a bad experience myself, despite several sightings while camping. Cheers, Martin
Great video! The high speed pack out was cool.... I'm looking forward to viewing the others. I'm an outdoors man from just South of you in the Quinte region, and bought a used 16' fiberglass Clipper, last year and want to try canoe camping. Thanks for sharing your experience. A new subscriber. Take care....
very good set only thing i would change is the stove but like you said it works so it doesn't need to be fixed. i like the pocket rocket but they seem so little i got two one fore back up until it proves it self .
Food barrels are watertight, but not odor-proof. Admittedly, less odor is likely to be emitted from a barrel than a dry bag because of the quality of the seal, but not odor-proof. Food barrels are capacious, watertight, and rugged. This means they can withstand long punishing portages, spills in rapids, and the break-in attempts of small critters, so can be left on the ground (away from camp). They aren't bear-proof either. We take them canoeing, not backpacking, due to weight. Cheers, -Martin
We don't use barrels. I've looked at them, but although they seem to make sense for canoe trips, they don't seem to make much sense for backpacking trips. We use the same gear for both types of trips (minus the PFDs and paddles, of course). I was watching stajanleafs videos and he was saying something about his barrel being odour proof, which I'd never heard of, so I was wondering. I might consider carrying a barrel if that meant that I wouldn't have to hang it. - Christine
I think I want to go out canoeing/camping with you guys because you have ALL the cool stuff !!! I think I must live near you because we go to some of the same places. If we ever cross paths out there somewhere, I'll be running out of water or food, I won't have enough sunscreen or bug spray, and some piece of my gear will be broken.... and you guys will be TOTALLY prepared and on top of every situation.
Hi Christine. My pack is generally around 25-30 pounds and André's is 38-40. We don't usually do single carries however the last trip we took a food bag instead and were able to do single carries on our last 3 portages. It was very amazing! We usually try to hang the barrel however there have been times when we haven't. I've read mixed reviews on the subject of hanging barrels, some people are for and some against. Do you hang your barrel? -Michelle
Nice video, and great idea with the duct tape around the fuel canister. I need to try that out. What kind of camera do you use for recording your videos?
So how did you guys decide on the backpacking packs versus the granite gear/duluth style portage bags? I'm going on my first BWCA trip in Sept. and cannot decide. I paddle rivers and streams here in the US so we mainly take waterproof seal line bags not suited for portaging. But the granite gear style bags are not waterproof from what I can tell. Any info is helpful.
nice, very nice.seeing real folks sitting around the living room with the cat is better than a outfitter selling gear and a trip or survival types making a canoe trip some sort of "man VS nature" adventure. i tried the duct tape around the fuel bottles trick some years ago but the stickum seems to of got partly lost when i pulled it from the bottle.i use those tiny rolls now.
Really enjoyed the video! It was funny for me to see so much gear that I also own. Gotta love MEC! Lol! My boyfriend and I also have those backpack liners and his is also the blue one and mine the orange one. How much weight were you carrying in total? Were you able to do single carries on the portages? Did you hang up the food barrel? Funny ending to the video! :-) - Christine
In Canada you can't have a hand gun out doors at all, even in the middle of the woods. crazy I know, at the range or locked at home that's all we are allowed to do here.
Good video! Looks like a good set of gear. I didn't see an axe or saw!? Are you guys not allowed open fires? P.S. I like Chico approving everything, my Björn is a pure white short-hair!
Nice you guys, subscribed! I wish my gf could be the type of partner that was down for stuff like this, I'm lucky to get her on a 1 mile hike without having to turn around.
Good video good quality kitty cat enjoys being right in the middle of things lol. Some of the items I was really interested in but being novice was not able to pick up on most of the info about who makes the item -- would be great for at least me if you spoke louder and a bit slower when mentioning some of the items or even put text on the screen - more work for you all though. I saw your blog but I'm to lasy to dig around in it also I watch the videos on other device and cannot acces the blog
U guys mentioned bears and wolfs, invest in a handgun capable of taking down a bear. Never know when u might get attacked or harassed by wild animals and it would suck to ever encounter a situation like that and have to dispatch the animal but its either your life or the bear/wolfs life... Safety first... Im pretty sure the warden will understand if u were being attacked and had to dispatch the animal... Great vid by the way!
Great videos you might want to give a tromcell a try I have one and I love keeps the bugs away www.thermacell.com/mosquito-repellent/lanterns . Hope this helps that spray can get old after a time Alan

Great video, thanks for all the tips on the gear needed for our next trip...I'm a new subscriber thank you once again.
Hope you and your gf have a great trip, it's always fun introducing someone to canoe tripping!
I watched just for the cat.
hahahaha just kidding. I enjoyed the detailed information and I can't imagine how you carry all that stuff! well done.

a couple of questions... I have the LIFESTRAW water filter, but I'm still too afraid to use it. and where can I purchase a small food barrel?
I'm thinking of investing in a Sven Saw to help harvest firewood. Do you guys just collect small stuff you can break over your knee?
So how did you guys decide on the backpacking packs versus the granite gear/duluth style portage bags? I'm going on my first BWCA trip in Sept. and cannot decide. Cool video with funny ending but three large backpacks...who is carrying the 3rd big food container?

i tried the duct tape around the fuel bottles trick some years ago but the stickum seems to of got partly lost when i pulled it from the bottle.i use those tiny rolls now.
I real enjoyed your video. One thing I noticed was you didn't have anything to process wood for a fire. I would also suggest getting bear spray.

Damn that is a fluffy cat. I'm gonna be canoeing down the mississippi for 3 months. I don't know anything about canoeing. any recommendations?

hahaha the cat is hanging out with you guys and she is taking care of his outdoor gear :))
cat = emergency rations?
