I'm taking my 40 yr old daughter to Algonquin next September for her first canoe trip. She and her husband are experienced backpackers, so she's pretty geared up. I've been canoeing up north since a youngster. Long ride from NC, but she's excited to get to North Tea Lake with her Dad! Thanks for sharing both your knowledge and passion!
Love the ottertail paddle! FWIW, I use a kayak (double) paddle for canoe camping and have a single as the backup. Like a lot of “extras” when camping, you end up using them for rescuing other people. I’ve never needed my backup paddle but have given them to stranded canoeists who dumped and lost theirs. Sort of like a sacrifice to the camping gods, I like to imagine! Same with “extra” first-aid stuff and extra heavy duty ziploc bags. Easy to pack, useful for helping others. 😊
See...! That why I love your video because, your video different than other. Such as when you talk about your gears. You talk about price, when, and where to use them. I'm sure anyone wanna get them and so exiting. Especially most of your gears are high-end and you're honest. Well done, Careena. Keep doing a good work.
I’m in my 60s. It’s amazing the advances made on camping and hiking equipment over the years. However there’s so much stuff that you’re tempted to buy but really isn’t necessary. Got to say though you did a great job on showing what is essential and handy like water filters. The advancement on making equipment lighter is the big winner, also advancements in waterproof clothing and equipment. I know you deliberately didn’t talk about food Careena, but that could be a good topic for a future vlog. The advancement in dehydrated food is amazing. As everything, there’s good and bad food products. Might be a fun one to see what’s good and bad for the traveling camper.👍
I was a graduate (Magna Cum Laud) of the Patrick McManus school of camping. Almost all of my gear was from an Army Surplus store down the street from my Aunt’s house. A “light sleeping bag for us was slightly over five pounds. When we were fully equipped, it took a crew to get our packs onto our backs! We carried all of our food in tin cans- with all the liquids intact. If we heard a strange(?) noise in the night- escape was accomplished by running through the wisely engineered mosquito netting, made flimsy for just such occasions.
A good multitool for backpacking is the Leatherman Juice S2. It's been discontinued but can still be found on the used market if you look around. Pliers, knife, scissors, 3 different sized flat head screw drivers, Phillips screwdriver, can opener, bottle opener, and only weighed 4.4oz. It came in orange or grey. The other model juices had more tools but were thicker and heavier. If you dint care about the pliers. The SAK Farmer is another go to for me.
Thank you for sharing. I’m always looking to drop a few lbs on my trips. I just realized by watching this , I never bring my towels out of the pack. Thanks again
Great gear video Careena. I have a big Leatherman too. But I started to carry, a Leatherman Wingman. It's light, and has scissors. For those pesky, nose hairs, etc. Cheers 🍻
Very similar to my gear. I will say that the BeFree let me down, though. I had the previous season's filter on and it started to slow down - even after rinsing. I threw on a brand new spare and only got 2 batches through before it started to slow down, too. I limped along for the rest of my trip, but upon my return decided to stop messing around. I upgraded to the Katadyn Pocket. It weighs a ton, and is quite pricey, but it is field serviceable and hasn't let me down yet. I also moved from paracord to Paria's Dyneema guyline. It doesn't absorb water or stretch like 550, but it holds a knot better/doesn't slip like regular Dyneema. It's also reflective.
Great Video. The Victorinox RangerGrip 78 And Sog Powerlight are pretty good choices for lighter tools. The RangerGrip is quite large but makes up for it with the corkscrew and saw.
i love my 2013 swift pack 13.6 flaxfusion . if i had to replace it i would look at t a prospector like yours. great video on light weight canoe camping .
Ya I need a pillow in my gear but what I use is my hoodie because if you fold it right and use the hood around it it's makes a very comfortable pillow. Good adventure kiddo..
Very informative video and well worth watching for beginners. I use similar items for solo or tandem trips. I paddle a nova craft 15 ft bob special with a traditional cherry paddle .But i use a smaller paddle for trolling .Yup it's all about you know what . For 5 ft 2 , you pack a lot of outdoorswoman in a small frame .
I remember watching your first few videos, subbed to you when you had less than 100 and said you'd blow up on YT and I was right. Congrats on your success.
I'm thinking about switching to a different water filtration system. So many choices. My current MSR filter pump is bulky and heavy but works fine. I think I need to try something like the squeeze or gravity types. Have a great weekend Brandon & Careena!
I'll say the same thing I said in a previous equipment review. Love how you use class act stuff!!! 👍🏻👍🏻 A little more money now can make the trips for years to come so easy and enjoyable!!! A+ C!!! Always awesome to see ya!!! Tell B to tighten up!!! 🤣😅😎😎😎
Just finished up your video and it was so well done. Lots of valuable information. You are certainly a natural speaker and can get you point across very well. I kinda chuckled when you said you were 5'2" you look taller. What a cute package you are, well put together and in awesome condition. Thanks for sharing and play safe princess.
Vet informative. Great job of discussing some of the tradeoffs you make when choosing gear. I ditched my leatherman and bring a swiss army knife along with a mini-ratchet screwdriver in case I need to do any canoe repairs.
Hey Careena! Your videos have been absolutely pivotal in my 4 years experience as a fellow 5 foot 2, backcountry canoeist, here in Ontario. Thank you for making all your informative videos, and keeping us up to date on your favorite gear. This year, I find myself carrying a bit more gear than usual in the tummy area! ;) Any advice for someone who's going into the backcountry halfway through their first pregnancy? I'm a little nervous, as I have more to risk, but I'm also excited to be in such a serene environment. I leave in a week for a 4 night trip with my husband and 2 friends, than again in September! Cheers!
Congratulations!! I went on a decent backcountry trip when I was 5 months pregnant and I had no issues other than peeing 10 times a night Haha. Just listen to your body, but have fun, you can do all the same things you did before you were pregnant and our bodies are amazing, just pace yourself and have fun!
I found that canoeing made my foetus fall into a deep sleep. After the first time I went to the hospital with a "period of reduced movement", because I didn't feel him move for hours that evening. They hooked me/him up and could see he was fine though. He's been pretty chilled in a canoe as a baby/toddler, so I think he liked it!
I like the idea of the dry bag for all your gear but what do you do when things get wet like your tarp or rain fly? Do you have a dry bag in your dry bag to separate the wet from the dry items? Thanks for making the video.
Another good one hope you guys are doing well the only thing you didn't touch on was what kind of knife you prefer for canoe trips looking forward to the next one either here or timber mates
I enjoy my tandem canoe because I made it, but it’s heavy. I would like to try out a Swift , because they are so light. Must be great for portages. Any Michigan Dealers? 🤷🏻♂️
Sawyer Squeeze water filter will have a much better flow rate than the Sawyer Mini, for not much more weight/size. I would highly recommend the Squeeze over the Mini. I'll have to try the Katadyn BeFree sometime.
Yes, very nice layout of the equipment, must say, the hiking apparel is even nicer, sure, French-Spanish 18th century look, so, the canoes are also nice, but what about wooden canoes, why would you not include something like that, do they get heavy and are they high maintenance? Thanks!
great gear review!! are you going to do a gear review for your not light weight camping equipment or a winter camping list?? good to see you back making videos again!! are you settled into the new house??
Do you not find the Xtherm too warm for Cdn summers? Swiss Army Classic is THE best untralight tool. I’d love to see your actual ultralight setup packed to go sometime. Future vid?

Careena, you need to read a book by Patrick McManus- it’s titled A Fine and Pleasant Misery. It describes my childhood very accurately.
Love ya, Dad! Excited to go to your favorite outdoor place with you!!!!
Thank you for sharing this with everyone Careena!! Love the real talk reviews like this. It Definitely provides a lot of value for peeps!
You are too kind man!! Thanks so much for everything YOU do! 🙌🏼

Great discussion. You are a real pro and we appreciate all of your insights into backpacking and in the woods, activities. Thanks! Love you!
Super Video 👍👌🤗

Everything was made of canvas when we were kids.

Good, informative, functional summary of practical gear
Great video Careena! You've really got your gear systems dialed in my friend 👍

Always nice to see what other people are packing for canoe trips in other countries.

Thank you for sharing. I’m always looking to drop a few lbs on my trips. I just realized by watching this , I never bring my towels out of the pack. Thanks again

Well done. Very nice beautiful ❤
So, truly impressed by the authentic life
Very interesting to see the kit you are using. Hope everything is well. Best wishes to you.
Checkout the Gerber Dime tool - very small and light weight with helpful tools.
I enjoy your shows and your energy

Canoeing and camping is Jam Up Jelly Tight. Liked it so much we used to do it in the fall too. You just don't want to fall in the water. LOL
Great Video. The Victorinox RangerGrip 78 And Sog Powerlight are pretty good choices for lighter tools. The RangerGrip is quite large but makes up for it with the corkscrew and saw.
Thank you! It can be hard to find reviews on Canadian gear, this was great!
Very good content and information. Love from India
i love my 2013 swift pack 13.6 flaxfusion . if i had to replace it i would look at t a prospector like yours. great video on light weight canoe camping .
Went to camp Waban as a kid for two summers, loved it.Did the Ottawa in a wooden canoe, portages no problem if ya could find a forked tree Lol.
OPINEL #8 or #9 is maybe an ounce or two and RAZOR SHARP , has a 90 degree spine for striking fire steels and makes a great STEAK KNIFE . 😁😁😁
Thanks for the recommendation!! I'll look into that for sure!
From Maine. I totally get the bug shirt!
Just picked up a gerber dime to throw in my backcountry kit. Really small but nice to have the utility.
Ya I need a pillow in my gear but what I use is my hoodie because if you fold it right and use the hood around it it's makes a very comfortable pillow. Good adventure kiddo..

Super great video Careena and I am sure it will help a ton of people! Thanks for sharing!
Starbucks VIA Instant coffee is quite good, packs small & mixes in well.
I’ll have to give them a try! Thanks!
Hope you guys are doing well. Enjoy the summer and enjoy life. Stay well and be safe.
Was some beautiful country were U were putting the canoe in,,, i miss hill's & mountains.
I remember watching your first few videos, subbed to you when you had less than 100 and said you'd blow up on YT and I was right. Congrats on your success.
That is so awesome!! Thank you so much for all the support over the years
Not taking anything away from her outdoor skills but definitely being smoking hot helps with UA-cam views.
I'm thinking about switching to a different water filtration system. So many choices. My current MSR filter pump is bulky and heavy but works fine. I think I need to try something like the squeeze or gravity types. Have a great weekend Brandon & Careena!
Thank you for sharing your gear.. I love having a pillow.. but I'm old and a side sleeping. lol
Thanks for the video
Hey , Nice Job on video and showing off all the gear and stuff you use . Lots of good info. Thanks and keep them videos a coming!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🪓🔪👍👍
Nice kit! I am a backpacker and packrafter who carries even lighter gear, but I was interested in seeing some of your choices
Highly recommend Leatherman Squirt PS4, decent knife and pliers are super useful (knots, splinters). Very small and compact.
Thanks for the recommendation I'll definitely check into it!

It's always a better day when you drop a video, Careena! (Also, you look taller.)
Thanks Careena from Orangeville Ontario, really enjoy your review videos…Love Algonquin Outfitters Huntsville, have shopped there bazillions of times!
Vet informative. Great job of discussing some of the tradeoffs you make when choosing gear. I ditched my leatherman and bring a swiss army knife along with a mini-ratchet screwdriver in case I need to do any canoe repairs.
Careena…coincidentally today I was wondering where you disappeared to; glad to see you back and good video 😊

‘Hope you’re all still with me’- we’re still with you😉 no worries and congrats on the marriage
☺️☺️☺️
Thanks for the great information.
zerofoxtrot woobie blankets cant beat em in summer
Do you intend to use an underquilt with the hammock, or a pad? Would highly recommend an underquilt - so much more comfortable.
Depends on how warm the weather is.
great gear review!! are you going to do a gear review for your not light weight camping equipment or a winter camping list?? good to see you back making videos again!! are you settled into the new house??
Haha for sure next gear video is heavy winter traditional gear 😅
Do you not find the Xtherm too warm for Cdn summers? Swiss Army Classic is THE best untralight tool. I’d love to see your actual ultralight setup packed to go sometime. Future vid?
With the Dry Bags for Packs, what do you do with a wet tent and other gear when you have to leave?
Any advice for paddle boarding for camping?
Hi from Colombia Careena great tools
Yo Karina💥
I have the exact same keewaydin 15, would'nt trade it for the world
How long is your double paddle? I have heard it needs to be longer than a regular kayak paddle
