I like how the judge has to go through each and every single person that this dip killed just to impose life sentences multiple times over, it makes it feel like every single victim had a voice and they weren't all just lumped together into one life sentence
That is the best part because unless stated otherwise she may have had the option to sentence them concurrently instead of consecutively, but she choose correctly to make him serve each sentence one after another.

That judge was fighting back tears! She can be as much of a judge as she can, however she is still a human being and a very good kind human being! You can tell how hard it was for her!
I know, im here just gut wrenched.... I think her trying to focus on judging helps, when you are used to fighting back tears, focusing on work or a task helps...at least for me
I respect the victims’ families sitting through this trial, having to hear autopsy reports, see photos of their dead children. It must be agonizing, but they showed up for their kids.
Each name being read out is a punch to the gut, and the anguish on those families faces is absolutely heartbreaking. May these angels’ souls rest easy and their loved ones find peace.
I’ve seen so many these past few years I just kinda grew numb to it. Can’t do anything about it, not even gun control can stop it (humans if determined enough will always find a way). Only thing we can do is count the casualties and sentence the person responsible.

@@ultramagnus6050 he's somewhat right. She actually resigned from the bench last year and went back to being a lawyer, but that was before the reprimand was issued. I think she was mostly professional, but some of her actions didn't sit well with the Florida Supreme Court, but I'm not sure what happened afterwards since she was already off the bench.

I was going to say that, despite how sad it would be to read all their names, she made an effort to pronounce them correctly and show the same amount of respect, clarity, not sounding tired or bored. I wish that also gave each family some comfort and validation.
I feel Judge Scherer, didn't take lightly the sentence's she handed out in this trial, but did it with conviction. One thing people need to remember is that Judges aren't robots, they see and hear things that would give any normal human being nightmares. They do this task day in day out. Respect.

Mr. Hixon was in my high school a few years before he switched to Parkland. He was always encouraging me in gym class to push it just a little harder. He wasn't my gym teacher, but he was always there cheering on the kids who were struggling, and stopping the troublemakers from, well, making trouble. It was truly shocking and saddening to find out that he had lost his life trying to protect students. I was maybe 15 years old the last time I saw him. I am now 29. Rest in Peace, Hero.

Seeing Mr. Schachter before his son’s name was called and the pain, emotion, and fighting back tears displayed after it cut back to him was gut wrenching. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain he feels not only losing his wife years prior but his son as well. I hope peace and prosperity for this man and the family he has left.

As a father, I lost my 17 year old son due to illness. I still can’t come to grips with it as sometimes I hear his voice. That pain is nothing compared to what these parents are going through because their lives were taken from them.

I guess the prosecution knew how super liberal Broward county is (vote 70% for Dems) and also wanted to honour the victims by going detail on what happened. The defence knew it had an impossible task so it wanted to prolong the case.... Usually, these cases end faster, maximum two or three weeks. Sad the verdict was horrible but we will change the unanimous decision requirement.

Two others followed her when her no would have been enough to ruin justice. It's the super liberal Broward County ruining their community. He's already imprisoned for 4 years. If we assume he lives until he's 80, that's basically 3.5 years per victim. ...Should have been death if it wasn't for the silly unanimous requirement (which FL Supreme Court said no longer required) in the super liberal county of Broward. I don't want to pay for his food, heating and the costly end of life care old people get in jails. Should have been a death sentence. A judgement of death (even if not administered until some 15 years later) would have been a value judgement on what he did, unlike what happened here, where his life was worth more than all 17 victims. This is a killer who searched on google "good songs to hear while killing people" before he went to that school. And the mitigation case was thoroughly debunked. 👉🏿 The problem is Broward county is a liberal county, and Before 2016, no unanimous decision was required for death sentences in Florida. The Florida Supreme Court initially erred by saying unanimity is required, before reversing it 2020. In between, the legislature amended the law to comply with the court ruling in 2016, but didn't restored the simple majority rule after 2020. I think the legislature will react quickly and restore the simple majority rule or 9-3 or anything. You know what you sign up for when you serve on death penalty jury. If you are weak or tumid, excuse yourself. I hope he gets it on the chow line in prison.

I get the overwhelming feeling from the parents in gallery, that they have a very strong feeling of “now what…” The trial kept them going I bet, impossible as it was to sit and listen. But now it’s over. They will just go back to their lives without their children. I can think of no greater abyss. I wish them a semblance of peace, and happiness. In their children’s names. ❤
This is meant in a positive way, and in no way meant to deny the sorrow and suffering that will remain with the families on some level for life. But most victims don't have the benefit, if that's the right word, to have the whole world mourn with them. Isn't that what we all would wish to have? I hope in some small way that might possibly have helped to take some of the edge off of the pain they have endured.

My hat goes off to this judge. This was a horrific trial, and she was fantastic throughout the entire thing. I love that she said each name. Not every judge gets it right, but she did. That "garnishment of commissary until paid in full" part is REALLY gonna make his life harder in prison. No portable TV, no non-cafeteria food, no non-prison issued clothing, etc. That's actually a pretty brilliant penalty that doesn't violate "cruel and unusual punishment."
There's a thing as prison money. Typically something that can be bought from commissary and keeps for a long time, like fish packs. He can do favors for prison money and trade that to others for actual commissary.

Good to see that every victim got recognized individually in this case, and punishments were set one at a time for the crimes committed against them. That makes it more personal for each family, and it's the best hope they could have for feeling like justice got served. This dude ended an entire classroom and got practically the same charge as someone who ended 1-3 people. Crazy just another case of Justice not being properly served in the court systems.

Everything after his 3rd kill was just a “bonus” kill pretty much because they can’t charge him any worse. They only read out 34 charges to make it seem like they’re actually doing something.
One beautiful thing to come of this is how close the families looked towards one another. It’s gotta be even slightly more helpful to have people that can relate and truly understand what you’re going through rather than doing it on your own. Man I hit him so much.
I am crying seeing them in the court room. They had to get up just like everyone else, put on presentable clothes and, put on a brave face for their family even though their whole world has stopped. It’s easy to look at them because we don’t know them but imagine that was your kid that got ripped away from you. It’s one of the saddest things in think someone has to endure in this life. I send all my love and light to these families.

My dad used to work in a prison, and he told me what inmates do to those who are in there for killing children. Cruz’s punishment will not end with the life sentences. RIP to the 17 dead, and my heart is with their families and everyone else affected by this horror.
I’m not saying nobody in the prison would want/try to kill him but what your father is most likely referring to is adult vs child crimes, adults that commit crimes against children get it bad in prison, he was a child who attacked children it’s a whole different thing entirely
The amount of time invested in life to consider taking care of and loving a child is beyond fathomable. All the moments that shape that decision and journey are beautiful. For people to be able to take these children's lives away with acts such as this is heartbreaking.
Ordinarily, when you hear the same sentence over and over, it loses its meaning. But with every repeat, every new name... It just hurt so much more. I remember being on the bus on my way to school hearing that there was an active shooting on the radio. Immediately after the breaking news, it was local coverage of a cheerleading competition. I'll never get over that. There was no time to process it.. no time to grieve the massive loss of children my age. I can only hope this brought the families some amount of closure. :(
I still don’t understand how anyone can load up a gun and leave their house with the intention of killing random strangers. I literally can’t wrap my head around it. This has to be a deep mental sickness. I hope these families that lost loved ones can finally find peace.

I appreciate that the judge went through and named each victim as she sentenced him to life for each. I'm sure judges do this all the time, but she really took her time for each person.
With each passing name and number the judge read, the harder I cried. As a mother myself, the bravery of these parents to have gone through all of this, and to have to carry on without their babies… my heart just breaks over and over for them. It’s unfathomable. 'Insane' was a VERY proper word for you to use! Because that is exactly what it was! Nik suffers from mental illness and was diagnosed with it at a very young age. Even his own mother, before she died, said he would never be able to live on his own. I'm sure God WILL bless those souls...if they were GOOD kids. As for Nik, God has no wrath for the mentally ill. But I wonder what will happen, come their OWN judgement day, to all the people who failed Nik. Like that school who, instead of placing him in a special school suited or his needs and getting him therapy and medicine kept him there and then simply threw him out when he became too difficult.
I hope the siblings of the victims are able to get the help they need. Everyone acts like the parents have it the hardest because they lost their kids, but the kids also lost their siblings.

I lost my big brother to a cyst that no one knew about. And I was the one comforting everybody because my parents were stuck in grief. So I am definetly biased but I feel like the world crashes around the parents and like you said everybody forgets about the siblings. At the funeral everybody ignored us. Nobody gave us their sympathies, just my parents. Like I literally have ptsd because I saw my brother dying, called the ambulace and tried saving his life and still I was the one comforting everybody, telling them everything is gonna be ok eventhough I knew it was not.
Life without parole is a harsher punishment than the death penalty. People underestimate how powerful despair can be, for you to wake up every morning, knowing that you'd never leave where you are for the rest of your natural life can become unbearable real quick.
Also they can get more money from him to pay the victims by garnishing his commissary for the rest of his life. I know the USA has a bloodlust for the death penalty but you are right, Life is a much better punishment.
I've always thought this. I know the psychological torment would be immense also though to know you're gonna be put down and know when it's coming. But also, then they get a perfect painless death. It's almost a reward life without parole is so much worse. Especially when you're only like 18 going in. Man, he has no purpose at all anymore. Atleast a lot of people in jail get their college degrees and learn skills, he's really got no reason to do any of that now.
Until you realise, inmates get institutionalised so much that it becomes normal after 10-15 years living imprisoned. You're no longer yearning for freedom and everyday normal life. So in reality the real "punishment" only lasts for a decade.

We lost our only child Ben, in 2004. People assured us that the scar heals over with time. It does, but only on the outside. PrayersUp for all of the victims and family members, and may God Bless them all. I wrote poems, to say what I still can't explain. But in one poem I wrote; Love and Pain. Loss and Gain. From these our lives must blend. Monsters are among us. But we must stay vigilant and determined to overcome their evil.

So much pain and heartache for these people. I loved how the judge spoke to the families and what she said. She later hugged the prosecuting attorneys and family members. I've never seen that before. She's awesome 👌
The judge at our adoption hugged us and the kids, and so did the prosecutor in the case. The prosecutor and sheriffs came to the adoption hearing. I was floored. You don’t see it often. But it means so much more than words can say. The judges and prosecutors suffer through a lot of second hand trauma… I’m sure the defense attorneys do too, but in this case, it’s nice seeing the judge and prosecution team supporting all of the victims.

I don't want to pay for his food, heating and the costly end of life care old people get in jails. Should have been a death sentence. A judgement of death (even if not administered until some 15 years later) would have been a value judgement on what he did, unlike what happened here, where his life was worth more than all 17 victims. This is a killer who searched on google "good songs to hear while killing people" before he went to that school. And the mitigation case was thoroughly debunked. 👉🏿 The problem is Broward county is a liberal county, and Before 2016, no unanimous decision was required for death sentences in Florida. The Florida Supreme Court initially erred by saying unanimity is required, before reversing it 2020. In between, the legislature amended the law to comply with the court ruling in 2016, but didn't restored the simple majority rule after 2020. I think the legislature will react quickly and restore the simple majority rule or 9-3 or anything. You know what you sign up for when you serve on death penalty jury. If you are weak or tumid, excuse yourself. I hope he gets it on the chow line in prison.
The pain never goes away. No matter how long it’s been. You can see it in their eyes :( My heart breaks for the victims’ families. Their kids should’ve been in colleges, pursuing their dream careers, living their lives right now. This is extremely heartbreaking.

Mr. Hixon was in my high school a few years before he switched to Parkland. He was always encouraging me in gym class to push it just a little harder. He wasn't my gym teacher, but he was always there cheering on the kids who were struggling, and stopping the troublemakers from, well, making trouble. It was truly shocking and saddening to find out that he had lost his life trying to protect students. I was maybe 15 years old the last time I saw him. I am now 29. Rest in Peace, Hero.

I get the overwhelming feeling from the parents in gallery, that they have a very strong feeling of “now what…” The trial kept them going I bet, impossible as it was to sit and listen. But now it’s over. They will just go back to their lives without their children. I can think of no greater abyss. I wish them a semblance of peace, and happiness. In their children’s names. ❤
This is meant in a positive way, and in no way meant to deny the sorrow and suffering that will remain with the families on some level for life. But most victims don't have the benefit, if that's the right word, to have the whole world mourn with them. Isn't that what we all would wish to have? I hope in some small way that might possibly have helped to take some of the edge off of the pain they have endured.

That "garnishment of commissary until paid in full" part is REALLY gonna make his life harder in prison. No portable TV, no non-cafeteria food, no non-prison issued clothing, etc. That's actually a pretty brilliant penalty that doesn't violate "cruel and unusual punishment."

There's a thing as prison money. Typically something that can be bought from commissary and keeps for a long time, like fish packs. He can do favors for prison money and trade that to others for actual commissary.

The judge honored the victims by stating each name one by one, and as hard as it was for their families to hear that it was important, the final piece of justice for them all.
It’s just legal procedure, not necessarily the judge “honoring” anyone. All the charges have to be read out loud one by one.

Good to see that every victim got recognized individually in this case, and punishments were set one at a time for the crimes committed against them. That makes it more personal for each family, and it's the best hope they could have for feeling like justice got served. I express my deepest condolences and sympathies to the parents that sat through through hearing the names of the innocent victims of this tragedy. Major kudos to the judge who had to read through all 34 counts, fighting back tears and trying to remain professional.
This dude ended an entire classroom and got practically the same charge as someone who ended 1-3 people. Crazy just another case of Justice not being properly served in the court systems.

One beautiful thing to come of this is how close the families looked towards one another. It’s gotta be even slightly more helpful to have people that can relate and truly understand what you’re going through rather than doing it on your own. Man I hit him so much.
I am crying seeing them in the court room. They had to get up just like everyone else, put on presentable clothes and, put on a brave face for their family even though their whole world has stopped. It’s easy to look at them because we don’t know them but imagine that was your kid that got ripped away from you. It’s one of the saddest things in think someone has to endure in this life. I send all my love and light to these families.

The amount of time invested in life to consider taking care of and loving a child is beyond fathomable. All the moments that shape that decision and journey are beautiful. For people to be able to take these children's lives away with acts such as this is heartbreaking.

Ordinarily, when you hear the same sentence over and over, it loses its meaning. But with every repeat, every new name... It just hurt so much more. I remember being on the bus on my way to school hearing that there was an active shooting on the radio. Immediately after the breaking news, it was local coverage of a cheerleading competition.
I'll never get over that. There was no time to process it.. no time to grieve the massive loss of children my age.
I can only hope this brought the families some amount of closure. :(

I appreciate that the judge went through and named each victim as she sentenced him to life for each. I'm sure judges do this all the time, but she really took her time for each person.
With each passing name and number the judge read, the harder I cried. As a mother myself, the bravery of these parents to have gone through all of this, and to have to carry on without their babies… my heart just breaks over and over for them. It’s unfathomable. Hug your loved ones. Any single opportunity you have.

Even his own mother, before she died, said he would never be able to live on his own. I'm sure God WILL bless those souls...if they were GOOD kids. As for Nik, God has no wrath for the mentally ill. But I wonder what will happen, come their OWN judgement day, to all the people who failed Nik. Like that school who, instead of placing him in a special school suited or his needs and getting him therapy and medicine kept him there and then simply threw him out when he became too difficult.

I know what it’s like to lose a sibling.it’s one of the worst feelings in the world.
I lost my big brother to a cyst that no one knew about. And I was the one comforting everybody because my parents were stuck in grief. So I am definetly biased but I feel like the world crashes around the parents and like you said everybody forgets about the siblings. At the funeral everybody ignored us. Nobody gave us their sympathies, just my parents. Like I literally have ptsd because I saw my brother dying, called the ambulace and tried saving his life and still I was the one comforting everybody, telling them everything is gonna be ok eventhough I knew it was not.

Life without parole is a harsher punishment than the death penalty. People underestimate how powerful despair can be, for you to wake up every morning, knowing that you'd never leave where you are for the rest of your natural life can become unbearable real quick.

I've always thought this. I know the psychological torment would be immense also though to know you're gonna be put down and know when it's coming. But also, then they get a perfect painless death. It's almost a reward life without parole is so much worse. Especially when you're only like 18 going in. Man, he has no purpose at all anymore. Atleast a lot of people in jail get their college degrees and learn skills, he's really got no reason to do any of that now.
I don't want my tax dollars paying for him. Knowing he has health insurance, food, a bed, etc. for the rest of his life.
Until you realise, inmates get institutionalised so much that it becomes normal after 10-15 years living imprisoned. You're no longer yearning for freedom and everyday normal life. So in reality the real "punishment" only lasts for a decade.

It is so powerful hearing her read the names of each victim he took.
So much pain and heartache for these people. I loved how the judge spoke to the families and what she said. She later hugged the prosecuting attorneys and family members. I've never seen that before. She's awesome 👌
The judge at our adoption hugged us and the kids, and so did the prosecutor in the case. The prosecutor and sheriffs came to the adoption hearing. I was floored. You don’t see it often. But it means so much more than words can say. The judges and prosecutors suffer through a lot of second hand trauma… I’m sure the defense attorneys do too, but in this case, it’s nice seeing the judge and prosecution team supporting all of the victims.
I loved this judge! She read every name out and made sure their name was heard and got what the families wanted. Love ❤️ and prayers 🙏🏼 to these families

They were vicitmized again two weeks ago. ...The juror Denise Cunha violated her oath, as early in the deliberation and even before considering the aggregators and mitigation she said she's a hard no. Two others followed her when her no would have been enough to ruin justice. It's the super liberal Broward County ruining their community. Any objective person looking at the scale would have said the aggregators outweighed the mitigation and death is the verdict.... ........ ......... ... The killer is 24. He's already imprisoned for 4 years. If we assume he lives until he's 80, that's basically 3.5 years per victim. ...Should have been death if it wasn't for the silly unanimous requirement (which FL Supreme Court said no longer required) in the super liberal county of Broward. I don't want to pay for his food, heating and the costly end of life care old people get in jails. Should have been a death sentence. A judgement of death (even if not administered until some 15 years later) would have been a value judgement on what he did, unlike what happened here, where his life was worth more than all 17 victims. This is a killer who searched on google "good songs to hear while killing people" before he went to that school. And the mitigation case was thoroughly debunked. 👉🏿 The problem is Broward county is a liberal county, and Before 2016, no unanimous decision was required for death sentences in Florida. The Florida Supreme Court initially erred by saying unanimity is required, before reversing it 2020. In between, the legislature amended the law to comply with the court ruling in 2016, but didn't restored the simple majority rule after 2020. I think the legislature will react quickly and restore the simple majority rule or 9-3 or anything. You know what you sign up for when you serve on death penalty jury. If you are weak or tumid, excuse yourself.

My heart breaks for the victims’ families. Their kids should’ve been in colleges, pursuing their dream careers, living their lives right now. This is extremely heartbreaking.

The pain goes away when you’re faithful and not emotional. You’re useless if you’re a depressed mess mourning the loss of loved ones who are sleeping in the grave and have no more part in this world.
You absolutely right the pain never goes away you learn how to deal with the lost. I lost my son 16 years ago at the age of 13 and still to this day It hurts
I’m sure the pain would of been slightly more relieved if he got the death penalty. It’s an injustice that he gets to live, while their kids don’t! The only point of prison is the ability to rehabilitate, where in this case it’s not even a factor, so why prison for life with no parole. Makes no sense!
