‘Slow Journalism’: Montana reporter sheds light on communities in news deserts

- Many communities in the Mountain West region are news deserts - geographic areas with limited access to credible and comprehensive local news. Nate Hegyi, who was once a reporter in Montana, sought to address this issue. He embarked on an 800-mile journey to report on communities in news deserts across four states. ‘Just talk to people… We don’t have enough conversations, person-to-person, across that political divide,’ Hegyi says.

'Have conversations when you travel' - absolutely. Conversation is about listening as much as talking. Unfortunately, many people think the latter is more important.

And you don't realize that there's still areas of the country where cell phone and anything faster than dial up are not available. I know of a few areas in both California and Missouri in my travels where there isn't a radio signal, cell phone service or wifi. Internet's not the panacea you think it is.

News deserts are better for your mental health and your relationship with your community. Just keep your focus on the important things in your life.
Mmmm... the can be, but while community focused, it doesn't help when the information provided by the community members is false (this was commonly the case with the "Ivermectin" conversations which mangled how it was used and it's purported efficacy). A news landscape that is filled with factual information is good for both the community and the people. A desert creates unreliable information if the few people that search out information (in the form of radio talk show hosts that may or may not have biases) aren't given good information. Just food for thought.

I think you mean "media" than journalism. Journalism is based on the dissemination of information girded by facts. Media is information shared regardless of the factual basis. Fiction is as much media as a newspaper in this definition. Journalism by it's very nature is based strictly on facts (it can be biased, but it still must be based in facts).
