      I couldn't agree more - this trade was a steal for the Cardinals. Lou Brock helped St. Louis reach the World Series in 1964, 1967 and 1967 while the pitcher he was traded for - Ernie Broglio - did relatively nothing for the Cubs.

    • @vinnyt4628
      @vinnyt4628 3 роки тому

      Yes, the Brock for Brolio trade, no Cubs fan will ever forget that!! The fact was Lou Brock never played day games until he came to Wrigley, the minor league team played at night, so he couldn't pick the ball up in the sun at Wrigley. The Cubs didn't think he was worth the wait, then shipped him to St Louis for Ernie Brolio, who was shot by the time he went to Chicago. Damn, imagine having Brock & Banks together.....

    The phrase "Brock for Broglio" is sometimes used in the sport of baseball to signify a trade that in hindsight, turns out to be an extremely lopsided transaction.
    The names in the phrase refer to Lou Brock and Ernie Broglio respectively, the centerpieces of a June 15, 1964, six-player deal: Brock, Jack Spring and Paul Toth were traded from the Chicago Cubs to the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for Broglio, Bobby Shantz, and Doug Clemens.

    Shortly after WW2, Cardinals General Manager Branch Rickey traded himself to the Brooklyn Dodgers for a couple of miscellaneous players. One of his first moves for Brooklyn was to sign Jackie Robinson, major league baseball's first African American. Then Catcher Roy Campanella and an overwhelming pitcher whose name escapes me at this moment.

    Some of these are pretty stupid. The Yelich trade can't be said to be bad yet because the Marlins have to fill out a squad and aren't trying to pay Yelich. So it's smart for them to get prospects for the future since they're rebuilding. And the Bagwell trade, come on. He was a prospect. You can't predict things like that.

    A few trades made by the Cubs in recent years come to mind. They traded Jeff Samradzija to Oakland for Addison Russell (among others). Russell helped the Cubs win the World Series in 2016. Samardzija seems to have plateaued. Speaking of the 2016 World Series, the Cubs got (rented) Aroldis Chapman for (among others) Eloy Jimenez. Jimenez is going to make his debut with the White Sox next season, and is still a highly-tauted prospect. While the Cubs would have arguably had a different postseason run without Chapman, he was only in Chicago for less than a full season, but Jimenez would have been great to have long-term.

    Yeah another doozy was Pirates trading Barry Bonds after the '92 'almost' season. He went onto greatness with the Giants, but I know that he wanted to go back there, which was his home. He won several titles and a few WS. We still love him in Pittsburgh. And side note, he did not take roids, he was constantly tested, never failed one of them! And to this day stands resolved that he never took them!

    One trade which could be on the next video is when the Blue Jays received Roberto Alomar and Joe Carter from San Diego in exchange for Fred McGriff and Tony Fernandez. Alomar and Carter were huge hits in Toronto and helped the Blue Jays win the World Series in 1992 and 1993. Fred McGriff was a good player but he only stayed with the Padres from 1991-1994 while Tony Fernandez didn't play very long for San Diego, either. This was definitely a bad trade for the Padres!

    You are making me do it. Babe Ruth was traded by Harry Frazee for the money to make "NO NO NANETTE". Today, most will think what? In 1919-20, it was a very successful Broadway play and baseball was coming off the Black Sox scandal. Yeah, at first, Frazee and a lot of others thought that Rupert Murdoch had been fleeced. It was the charisma of Ruth in those later years that turned this into one of the worst sports trades in history. It was not at first.

    Lou Brock for Ernie Broglio. Broglio was a Cardinal starting pitcher. Lou Brock was a rookie outfielder with the Cubs. A couple months after the trade, Broglio hurt his pitching arm and that was the effective end of his career. Brock went on to become a 3000-hit daily player, plus one of the greatest base-stealers in history, all enroute to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

    The Babe Ruth trade, you left out the fact that Boston Owner Harry Frazee wanted funding to produce a Broadway show part of that trade was a $450,000 loan, along with the $100,000 cash for Ruth. Although myself and I'm sure Red Sox and Baseball fans will never think it's a "good" deal. Frazee ended up producing a Broadway hit "No, No, Nanette" with the money. So for Frazee and the Yankees...it was a GREAT deal !

    And them McGwire decided to stay with the Cardinals. Goldschmidt would do likewise years later. Something to be said about a franchise with possibly the best fanbase in sports --Cards-Cubs rivalry games feature friendly Midwestern folks (whereas at a Dodgers-Giants game you take chances with your life).
