  • Well my medical insurance sucks! Hip surgery update. Instead of surgery, I got a cortisone shot, and then hit the trails to test it out, along with the Hoka Speedgoat 6 first run.

    So you pay a shit ton for insurance and get a top doctor to say the surgery is necessary and the insurance company says do something to mask the pain instead! Why? Because it's all about the insurance company making money. Great system we have in this country. So great though to see you out on the trails!!

      Yeah and even my PT recommended surgery. But noooo. Some stupid insurance policy document says there has to be a local injection. Ugh. I hate the medical system here.

    Health Insurance really likes the 'least invasive " concept. If you had been seeking coverage for the cortizone shot, they probably would have denied it. And they still might. I had a cortizone shot in my right hip for a psoas syndrome and it helped but the healing was still slow. I didn't even bother with my insurance. The doctor was Dr. PAULL who works in Colorado Springs. Does not take insurance, does do home visits. Shots are $75 on top of $375 home visit.

    There are opportunities to appeal the insurance’s decision. Push your medical provider to help you appeal it. Often the provider can supply additional data to describe why the shot wont be the required fix to get the surgery approved. I work in the biz..

    Completely normal, but I'm surprised the pre-authorization wasn't taken care of before scheduling the original surgery. In my case, when I screwed up my foot, insurance said I needed to do 6 sessions of physical therapy before they would even cover an MRI.

  • @markryan4293

    Most insurance companies require an injection but is doesn’t have to be cortisone. You can a diagnostic lidocaine injection and that satisfies the requirement without the downsides of cortisone. It also helps to determine if your pain driver is the labral tear vs extraarticular pathology.

    The healthcare system definitely has some major flaws, I feel for you Steven. Are you concerned you will do more damage running on the shot? It was great to see you running with Valan, and I'm happy you got another surgeon lined up.

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  25 днів тому +2

      So, from what my prior surgeon said, my labrum is torn and completely ossified, so I really can't do more damage to it. The shot is just making it so I don't feel the pain. The Doctor told me to run and test the shot and keep notes of how I was feeling. Thanks, Brother!

    I was in the medical profession for 41 years. The reason they denied you is simple - money. Insurance companies are all about maximizing profit not providing healthcare. It’s ridiculous what we Americans put up with when it comes to healthcare.
    Be careful not to make it worse- cortisone can hide a lot of symptoms.
    Good luck with your recovery .

    Bro! That sucks about the insurance. Typical sticklers with no med knowledge. If it’s torn, it’s freaking torn. Cortisone don’t fix that. Yeah go out on the trails and tear it up!! Shoot, surprised they don’t require another MRI.
    And sounds like a disappointment on the SG6. I’ve tried Salomon and Inov8 and both are too narrow and I don’t have wide feet. Who they model all these shoes after, Jim Walmsley? 😝 We regularly people for goodness sake!
    So even though SG5s aren’t my fav fit, should I go buy them all up while on sale? Looks like the 6s are no bueno! And man… that Suunto looks sweet!! #stayhard

    • @UltraTrailSteven
      @UltraTrailSteven  25 днів тому +2

      Yeah it’s beyond frustrating.
      If the SG5 work for you, might not be a bad idea. Have you tried the Mafate Speed 4? I prefer them over the SG.

    • @mk_ultrarunner
      @mk_ultrarunner 25 днів тому +1

      Not yet. They are still a bit pricey even if found on sale. I want to try the TectonX but they are definitely $$$. I had the EVO Mafate a while back. I finally splurged for $160 onsale after they had been out a couple years. I shredded those things. I didn’t even get 400 on them. So I’ve been weary of the Mafate. They were more nimble than a SG, but prob cause they have less material. I heard the Evo SGs were good when they were around. May have to keep an eye on the Mafate again.

    Though you had a local steroid injection, there are some systemic symptoms associated with it like a higher heart rate. That might be part of the reason for your higher HR. I’m sure you already talked to your orthopedist about how hard to workout after you get a steroid shot. It may help for pain and inflammation but it may impair healing and hide pain if anything is making it worse.

    The insurance runaround (no pun intended) is all too familiar. Insurance wanted me to do physical therapy for my shoulder before they'd give a blessing of an MRI. I paid for the MRI out of pocket (saving time and money). Even though the MRI didn't show anything significant, the surgeon wanted to get in there to at least "clean things up" (*barf*). It's been worth it so far, and I'm determined to have the shoulder and the arm stronger than it's ever been.
    Stick with it. It's frustrating. Yell at the sky, shake your fist at the trees. Stand up for your well being!

    Sorry to hear bud. One question though, isn't the shot just going to make everything worse? Now you are moving/running normal and that is just making it worse (but you can't feel it) or perhaps its a situation where until surgery there is no "making it worse" as you simply need the surgery? Either way sorry to hear and hope it all gets resolved soon.
