Just coming up on my 5th week of labrum reconstruction. I was weight bearing in 3 weeks. No crutches at 4. My pain over the last year has kept me off the road and I gained 10lbs, so as fit as you are, I think you will bounce back quick. I watched your wife’s video before my surgery and it helped! Thanks you guys!
Thank you, Charles! Glad to hear your recovery is going well!
wishing you a speedy recovery
Thank you, Mike! I appreciate it! Hope to meet you in person at TRE this year
Sorry to hear. Focus on the finish line of a full recovery.
Definitely! Thanks!
I'm sorry for your diagnosis but it's good to know, treat, regain strength and relentless movement forward! All of the prayers and strength to you!
Thank you, Sarah!
Glad the problem was dicovered! Time to heal will give you excellent rest and you'll comeback stronger! Skål!
Let’s hope! Thanks!
This really sucks, I'm sorry. Glad you have a diagnosis and a plan though. Hang in there, man!
Thanks, Sean!
Hi Steven. I hope to return much stronger than ever.
Thanks!
I was nervous about this video. Finally you have some answers and you sounded very positive on recovery protocol. I pray your surgery goes well and you come out of this much much stronger to chase your dreams. Stay positive and glad your daughter is having fun with her running.
Thank you so much!
Good luck Steven! You’ll be back stronger than ever. Focus on arms for a little
Thanks Sam!
Thanks for curating this video and the update. I wish you a speedy recovery. One day at a time. Keeping hammering!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing the update. Will praying for your surgery, surgeons and the healing process. ❤
Thank you!
Life has a way of throwing curveballs, Steven. Hang in there, and spend more time with the family. I hope all goes well.
Thank you, Labe! With the down time I have been coaching my sons flag football team!
Take care - Heads Up. You will raise like Phoenix from the ashes!!!
Thank you!
I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis! Prayers for a speedy recovery.
Thank you, Chrissy!
Glad to hear you finally have a diagnosis and surgery scheduled. I know it's tough for you to not be running, but I have no doubt you will be back on the trails again. Praying for a successful surgery and a quick and smooth recovery! You always have kept me on my knees! 😅♥️ Love seeing Katrin having so much fun running!
Thanks, Mom!
🙏🏼🙏🏼 for you my friend
Thank you
Welcome to the world of overdiagnosis my friend. If you look hard enough ( ie 3 MRI’s) you will find all types of “incidentalomas”. Get well and don’t worry about the anxiety provoking bone cyst!
Thanks!
Well this isn’t the best news, but not knowing is the worst! Hang in there, Steven. Not being able to do what we love is miserable -but glad you can find the joy cheering on Val and the kiddos with their endeavors while you’re awaiting surgery and recovery. Prayers for sure!
Thank you so much, Nick!
Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Thank you!
Stay strong Steve and keep your chin up! You`ll be back up in the mountains sooner rather than later. Thoughts with you my friend.
Much appreciated!
Best wishes!
Thank you!
Best of luck for the recovery
Thank you!
Speedy recovery
Thank you, Lindsay!
I’m super sorry man. You’re an incredible runner and I’m positive you’ll come out of this.
Thank you so much for the support!
Absolutely devastated for you mate. Know you will be back strong 💪🏿
Much appreciated
Sorry to hear! Keep your head up! Keep a healthy focus and you'll be back to sport before you know it.
Thank you!
Definitely tough news my friend. Wish you all the best with the surgery and recovery. Sure can tell this is tough on you. Always appreciate your honesty and resilience to adversity. You go this!
Thanks!
I have no doubt you’ll be back on the trails (and running them) in the future. Best of luck and success as you go through « the process » Steven.
Thank you!
Glad you now know what is going on, may God take care of everything, guide the doctors and give you wisdom to comeback stronger.
Thank you so much!
oh man i hate that for you. you have been such an inspiration to me after watching your Leadville 100 series. i was hopeful to meet you during the Leadville marathon but i am still dealing with my chronic tendonitis and had to defer my race to 2025 sadly. stay strong man.
Thanks for the kind words! Unfortunately I had to withdraw from volunteering at the Leadville Marathon as that’s only two weeks after my surgery. I hope your tendinitis recovers!
Sending positive vibrations your way my dude. Also, congrats to your daughter for inheriting the bad ass gene!
Thanks, brother! HAHA she's our little track star lol
Sorry to hear that, Steven, but stay positive because it's overcomable. I had a torn right labrum involving calcification, or what was described as a bony protuberance, shredding away at my labrum. The surgeon shaved down the bone, cleaned up the labrum, and I was doing the physical therapy and then walking within 8 weeks, paced 35 miles at Leadville a year later, and completed the Leadville 100 the next year. You'll be back. Also, based on your military service, and depending on where you have been deployed, you my want to check into your Army medical records and connect any service-related injuries or service. I was airborne, so hips and back took a beating for sure, and also deployed to a few presumptive condition combat zones under the PACT Act, so cover your bases and do some research, if you haven't already. Positive vibes on your future surgery, recovery, and comeback.
Thank you for the info. I appreciate it!
Wow! What an turn of events😞. On the positive note I’m really glad you are where you are as far as healthcare 😉
Me too!
I’m glad you found answers but I’m sorry it isn’t the greatest news. Hoping for a seamless recovery and look forward to watching your recovery progress. Also it’s so cool to see your daughter taking up the sport too!
Thanks, Scott!
well that sucks! but you'll be fine in the end, after all you now finally know what's been wrong. speedy recovery!
Thanks!
You are in my thoughts brotha! I love that you still have race goals for the future, but be kind to yourself and listen to you body. I need a fully recovered Steven!
Thanks, Brother! I really appreciate the support!
Stay strong man! Preying for a quick recovery and some solid good news on your other issue.
Thank you!
At least you have a direction and plan for resolution. Keep up the good work and you'll be back at it before you realize!!
That's the plan! Thanks!
Good luck my friend!
Thank you, Wes! I appreciate it!
Oh no! I'm so sorry! On the one hand, you know you'll hopefully have a great recovery... on the other, you watched everything Val went through, so you've got to be dreading it. You'll come out the other side and be killing it in 2025! I'll be waiting for your videos! (I just never watch review videos because I'm broke. 😂) Good for your daughter, following in mom and dad's inspiring footsteps!!
Thank you, Kelly!
Sorry to hear of this diagnosis. I had a hip issue crop up years ago after a treadmill run (severe hip flexor strain), physical therapy solved it maybe 80% of the way but it's never been the same since, so now I split my time between running and lifting. BTW you look like you'd be a beast at lifting - maybe set a goal to bench press 225lbs or do X pull ups by the time you resume running? Just to take your mind off running and keep active without using your hips. Take your time and good luck man - rooting for you.
Thank you! I have been in the gym twice a week. It would be cool to beat my bench PB, but that was almost twenty years ago lol.
@@UltraTrailSteven I thought I had hit my bench PB in college (245lbs), managed to put up 255lbs last month at the ripe age of 49! Doesn't help with my running (in fact might be detrimental to my times) but unless you're at Walmsley's level in ultras, who cares lol. Good look man.
@@user-up7rr5ui3b that’s awesome! 245lbs was my PB back in 2006. I have a long way to go to get back to that lol
Ah man that sucks big time bro. Sorry to hear but I love the idea of documenting the process. This could become the premier series for years to come when anyone has this issue. Heck, perhaps even medical professionals reference this video series down the road when talking to other athletes with this issue. Stay strong bud! December will be here before you know it!
Thanks so much!
Omg 😱
I’m glad you have a diagnosis with encouraging recovery time, but what an absolute bummer. But still you’re being as positive as you can…stay in that mindset 😟
Thanks, Celine!
Your daughter looks like a natural runner! How fun!!! Good luck with the surgery and recovery.
Thank you! Yes, Katrin has great form already!
Bummer man but you'll be good! Had it done in 2014 and was back to full in 4 months with most weight bearing activities... including tough mudders and races. best of luck!
Thank you! That's encouraging to hear!
Hi Steven! I'm glad you finally have a diagnosis! Prayers and support for you! I hope your surgery and recovery goes smooth! 🙏🙏🙏 We're all here to support you!
Thank you so much!
Praying for you. Quick recovery and a strong mind
Thank you, Todd!
So sorry for the injury, but thankful you got a diagnosis. Praying for a good surgery and recovery.
Thank you!
Hi Steve. Please reach out to Dr Philippon at the Steadman clinic. Happy to help you out. Mark Ryan
Unfortunately the Steadman Clinic does not take my insurance. However, my surgeon did a Fellowship at the Steadman Clinic!
That sucks but now you know and can start rehab and get back running
Yeah just ready to get the surgery over with
Just ready to get the surgery over with

Glad you have a diagnosis now and it sounds like you are in great hands to get fixed up. Sending you healing vibes!
Thank you, Robyn!
Good luck sir. You’re an inspiration to us all. Wishing you a safe and speedy recovery.
Thank you so much!
Heal fast. Glad you have great health care. Follow the plan be back stronger!
Thanks!
Sorry to hear this, man. Hoping for successful surgery and smooth recovery.
Thank you, Chris!
I found your channel through the video on your wife’s surgery. It was incredibly helpful! I have a small tear but have managed to keep it at bay with PT, dry needling and lots of time on the elliptical. I know surgery at some point is probably inevitable. Wishing you all the best for your surgery and recovery!
Thank you! I hope your recovery goes well
Stay strong! You will be back!
Thank you, Steve! Here's to 2025!
Sorry to hear the news, Steven. Good luck with the surgery and recovery!
Thank you, John!
All the best and a speedy recovery! I was just diagnosed with PHT and a torn hamstring tendon, so I look forward to following your rehab video series and recovering together! See you on the trails in ‘25!👊🏼
Thank you! I wish you the best in your recovery as well!
Hey Steven, praying for your surgery and recovery. You have all of our support. Having the diagnosis and a plan forward is positive. And thank you for sharing this part of your journey, that takes courage.
Thank you for the support, Reto!
Glad you got some answers, glad you will continue documenting your progress, looking forward to the upcoming drops.
Thank you!
Oh man, so sorry to hear this. Take your time heal well and fully before returning.
Thanks, Debra!
Sorry to hear about this. Will run in your honor this year! My daughter ran various levels of CC when she was younger and it was always a joy to watch her play sports. I am sure you are your daughter's biggest fan.
Heal quickly and keep your attitude up as that always seems to be the first thing that challenges athletes. Life is short but it's also long and you have lots of time for adventures.
Thank you so much!
Sorry to hear that. It’ll be tough being away from running for a while, but you’ve seen the process before and you know that you can do it too. I’m sure that you’ll focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t. I hope that you have a successful surgery and that your recovery goes as well and a quickly as possible. I’ll definitely be following your journey through this and wishing you the best.
Thank you so much!
Long road to recovery but good steps forward!
Thanks, Alex!
You’ve got this brother ❤️ Best of luck with it all
Thanks!
@@UltraTrailSteven ❤
Sorry to hear about the hip Steven! Glad you have some answers though and a track season to look fwd to
Thanks!
Glad you've got a path forward. Franken-Steven inbound. We'll all be pulling for you, and be sure to watch and like all your vids during the time you can't run.
Thank you so much for the support!
❤
Thanks, Bro!
Wishing you all the best in your recovery and hope you comeback even stronger in 2025. Thanks for all you do uplifting the sport we love.
I appreciate that! Thank you!
Sorry for the blow to your running Steven. I'm confident you'll build back strong from this. Also, amazing to see your daughter do so well! Thinking of you.
Thank you!
Sorry man, that sucks. You’re still young and have decades on the mountains ahead of you. Just got to focus on bigger picture for now. Time to build muscle 💪 on upper body
Thanks! I have definitely still been in the gym about twice a week!
Sucks to hear about your diagnosis and impending surgery. The recovery from surgery could take some time, but it could make you a stronger runner when you return back to running.
Thanks! I hope so!
Any surgery is a big bummer, but I'm very happy that the problem is "just" a torn labrum- I'd called it as sounding like that was the issue! As for the possible cyst, we're going to say that's all it is- don't let it weigh on your mind-definitely have been praying for you often (pretty much every Monday when I would be watching the new videos!) and I'm watching all the gear reviews and giving them a like even though I'm not a gear review girl-LOL! With Valan having gone through this, you know what lies ahead so that should ease some nerves. Continued prayers! Chin up!
Thank you so much for the support and prayers, Tiffany!
Balls!
Yep
@@UltraTrailSteven For all it's worth I got achilles tendinitus (spelling I know) last February. Managed to finish ths Ice Age 50 mile off of the winters base training and PT. I'm currently able to run although it will be at least another 10 months before goin' some serious miles. In the meantime .. what do I do? I will get healthy. I'll remember the pain I went through. I'll get back no matter what. You will too. Take it slow and use this time as I know you will. Much love my fellow crazy.
@@paulbuchanan9914 thanks! I hope you recover well!
Collagen is💰.. Support that ligament and connective tissue health. Incredibly important for ultra athletes
Thanks for the info
Yikes! I’m sorry. At least you have a diagnosis, but I know this puts a damper on things. Really hope that “cyst” is benign and that it doesn’t develop in to anything more. Crazy you had to have that many MRIs. $$$
Yeah this is an expensive year! Luckily the 3rd MRI was at no cost to me. Thanks, Matt!
@@UltraTrailStevenI bet. I assume your deductible has been met and that the surgery will be mostly be covered too.
@@mk_ultrarunner well apparently with the reconstruction there is some part of the surgery that is not covered. 5k!!! Ugh
@@UltraTrailStevenoh man! What a bummer. Still paying on my hernia surgery.
@@mk_ultrarunner ugh!
Pray for you and your family.
Thank you!
