My ML4 Myford lathe still had the square 5/8" lead screw, that along with the nut has serious wear after turning 304 SS, the fine swafe ( why does auto-correction not like that word) So at great expense I've ordered an acme lead screw and nut and want to protect that from getting the same wear. So your video was just the job. Found the item on eBay for just over a fiver UK. So thanks for the heads up on this solution. 😊
@@stevohdee8118 the lethal thing arrived today. Hopefully when fitted over the new leadscrew I'm making it will work. At the moment it does not collapse very easily and managed to come apart so I had to re-wrap it all the way to the end when it gave a finger a nasty cut. Treat this thing with caution, it is a pretty dodgy thing.
Yeah i was real cautious with it, think i wore gloves in vid? When resetting try twisting while pushing. I found by rewinding it inside out it had less resistance and this is how mine is attached.
@@stevohdee8118 Thank you for that tip. I was wondering how it was that mine seemed to tighten up, compared with your fitted on the leadscrew. When my finger heels I'll investigate more. Best Dave
Hey Phil thanks, Hans from the comments has found them on eBay, called bo stick or something & Len has a link to company making proper ones, check them out, cheers mate
in the 80s a popular one was male and female vulture on branch, he says "Patience my ass I'm going to kill something" and as a kid i thought he was calling her "my ass". Another i once saw was "to russia with love" and a hand flipping the bird...
Update: While reversing the spiral did make collapsing the tube easier, I ended up going with a kit from Little Machine Shop. Their #5202 is for 7x14"/16" Mini Lathes and comes with all the parts with the exception of some installation tools (which can be purchased from LMS or downloaded for 3D printing, see Chris' tips under their item #5203). The covers work beautifully, but you will need to wipe excess oil from the tubes for about a week (won't need to oil the lead screw for awhile, though). If I could figure out how I would imbed a photo of my finished result, but LMS does have photo's on their website, along with the installation instructions.
Thanks Charlie for the update. The LMS kit is neat but I couldn't justify the cost, it's about 15% of the price of lathe. My system works fine & didn't have to attach brackets, I don't use the thread dial anymore so no probs. Thanks again for your info, cheers
@@stevohdee8118 I understand the cost issue, but since I ordered with some other items at least I saved on shipping. It does leave an gap for the thread dial, which I don't use either so I covered the gap with a slit piece of 1" Vinyl tubing. I didn't want to do anything more permanent as I'm contemplating modifying one of LMS' DRO's (#5673) to use the lead screw for carriage movement. Regards, Charlie
Stevo - looking at videos of the "proper" use of these (magic appearing cane), they look like they are very difficult to push closed. Once you cut yours down, did that make it easier to collapse, or did you have to unwind it a couple of times to free it up? Also, did you use two of these or were you able to just split one? Thanks!!
Hey Charlie, yep they are difficult to reset. I used two because I thought the hole in the narrow end was too small. Took a bit of mucking around to get the spring to retract nicely. I unwound it clamped down to bench and rewound inside out. If you open fully you'll notice that at the wide end you can rewind differently and this worked better. I'm struggling with explanation but I hope this helps
@@stevohdee8118 Thanks, Stevo: reversing the spiral helps a lot. I also trimmed off the yellow lacquered ends which also helped. I'm thinking a light spray of Teflon dry lube will make it near perfect. I'm going to order a pair of un-colored ones so I'll have a spare - let you know how things turn out.
@@ChazzC ahh reversing the spiral was what I was trying to say... Mine had a holographic looking sticker at the big end, didn't see any plain online. looking forward for your result with the Teflon, regards stevoh
@@stevohdee8118 My first two had yellow lacquer on the first 6" or so of each end (to make it flashy, I assume: they also had other colored ends and black the full length for a more traditional magician's cane). The one's I have or order also look to have a holographic sticker around the large end like what you show in the video. I'll keep you updated with my results. Best regards, Charlie

Wait, wait...found em "martial arts Bo Staff" ...I guess they are sanctioned for maiming people. Just not cats. "Thankfully, regardless of strength, size, or previous training, anyone can learn several effective self-defense techniques. defend yourself against any attack. from awareness and prevention to realistic functional self-defense techniques or use it just to have fun and to impress your friends, do it all only with the portable self-defense staff! Carry around the Pocket Staff to ensure your safety and self-defense or just for fun! It extends from 2'(5cm) to 5' or 120 cm in a matter of seconds. With its concealable form, you can silently pop out this bo-staff whenever you are in danger! It's also a classic magic trick props, easy to learn and convenient to carry around, after you master it, the effect is pretty awesome. The PocketStaff is built from high-grade stainless steel which can be used for martial arts and self-defense effectively."
Looked on eBay here in the US...nothing like that... I'm sure they are banned because of cat deaths. We don't like cat killers here in the civilized upper half of the world.

It looks about like the factory covers on my little D&M lathes.
So where does a guy in the States get one of those cat maiming missiles? PS you are a cruel twisted man....but you already know that. Poor kitty!
