For cleaning a lathe try diesel (I use red diesel) in a spray bottle AFTER CLEANING THE CHIP PAN AND BLOCKING THE DRAIN. The cutting fluid runs off with the diesel into the chip pan. There is a little residue left which I wipe with paper towels and the quick way to clean the remaining mess in the chip pan is sawdust. Takes minutes to clean a dirty lathe. The small amount of residue left can collect dust in a dusty environment which I avoid by covering my lathe with a painter's cloth from Harbor Freight.
One of the first things I did in my lathe cleanup. Looked like it had not been cleaned in a very long time. Just like anything else, be careful, wrapping the the string on a finger could lose you that finger!!! Another great video.
Good tip. That's actually part of the regular maintenance on my Smithy, although I used to be more negligent than I am now. I once dropped $40 for a new half-nut because I thought mine was worn out, but when I pulled it out I found it was just packed with aluminum turnings. Clean your lead screw!
3D printer owner here with dual Z axis lead screws that look dirty and cause Z banding in my prints. I think I'll try this by putting one end of the screw in a low-speed drill. Thanks for the tip!
Good tip Randy. Everything I've tried previously to clean that lead screw has been unsatisfactory and I'll blame that for why I never do it. I have no good excuse now. Thanks a lot.
Welcome to the classroom with Randy. Wow what a GREAT way to get this lathe screw cleaned, so much easier, need to be safe so is true with all machining steps in a shop, this is going to be attempted here even like the grime cutting idea as well, That is truly clean. Thank you Randy.
Great trick on the lathe, didn't think about it, should have known, though, since i'm wearing a string for for other cleaning purposes.... Oh.... Crap...!!!! lol
I likes😊. Running a paint brush too close to an end mill and using the now very short bristled brush works well for those screws without power feed lol. I'll definitely utilize that string trick once my power feed is up and running, thanks for the tip! 👍😁👍
i've heard of a newer machinist using steel wool to clean the engaged screw with their hand. That they almost lost a finger is why this is 1000 times better.
Randy Richard In The Shop : Yeah used the same technique to clean M-16 and M-60 recoil springs but manually turned them. Always amazed me what cotton string would pick up.
I am not sure I can get from one end of my feed screw to the other in 5 minutes. lol Looks like yours could benefit from some heat straightening. The one on my big lathe wags a bit too and it annoys me. I may have to give it a go.
That band is caused by heat treating in the factory originally. It is meaningless to the operation little lathe other than it might wear a little faster. If it is worn replace it otherwise it doesn't matter one bit. It goes perfectly straight as it passes through the apron that's all that matters
@@RRINTHESHOP yes buddy she's in great condition. And came with alot of extras I'll email you a picture if you like. Even managed to get the exack manual from Canada. Which was a bonus.
Randy, It looks like you have a digital readout of some sort on you saddle. Can't quite see how it works. Is this something you had a video on? If so I didn't find it. By the way this is an excellent tip. Thanks

watching this, look down to see a dental flossing pick that I'd laid down by the keyboard ... that gives me an idea! ... I'll put the idea on the group page, and see what comes of it
Please only use Metric sized string on a Metric lead screw, and imperial sized string on an imperial lead screw. :-) , well someone was going to say it.
The UA-cam-added captions are hilarous! "when the tax cattle do it again" "and a knife cut the brain" I do feel sad for any deaf subscribers though. Unless they have a hearing friend, and then they always know about these jokes when we hearing folks usually don't.

Quick, easy and works great. Thanks.
That's a good trick - I have done similar before with a long boot lace but string sounds like easier for disposability. Another good one Randy :)
Thanks Chris.

Oh Yeah, for sure. Thanks.
Nice! I knew there had to be a better way!
Thanks Rocking J.
Real nice tip, Randy!

I haven't had to clean my lead screw yet. I guess I better use the lathe more.
I forgot to explain that. Thanks Ken.
Great idea.
Thanks Steven.
Finally a use for that dental floss I get at each dentist visit.
Thanks Ryan, good idea.
Now that I like! Great tip...
Works great Dave. Thanks.
Just cut some 10mm 1.25 threads and I can never get them completely clean deep down in. Your trick worked perfectly!!!
Morning Randy! Nice hack.
Morning Craig, Works great. Thanks.

Just a small amount of bend, 60" screw. I am thinking of replacing it, fairly worn. Thanks Brian.

Brilliant tip Randy. Have to remember that one mate. By the way Randy I picked up my new lathe 2 weeks ago she's a great lathe buddy
Thanks Mark. Sweet deal on the lathe.

Just tried on my lathe worked great !

Dental Floss! Great tip Randy!!
Thanks Fred.
Neat idea
Thanks Jim.
Good idea, pay attention to his warnings boys n girls, be very easy to lose a finger or get pulled into it.
Thanks Matt.
And then move the carriage all the way to the right so you can get the part of the lead screw up by the headstock, where it's the dirtiest.
Thanks Don.
There is a crazy amount of runout in your leadscrew
Wow that's a great idea thanks for sharing. M. K. S.
Thanks Kelly, works great.
What kind of string are you using? Will it work on my specific lathe model? Do you have an Amazon link? What if I don't have a lathe? 😉
All kidding aside, that's great! Thank you!

shit, now i have to go and clean my lead screw. never thought about using a string. god bless
Works great Kevin, Thanks.
I use a toothbrush along with some WD-40. Good tip though.
Right on
I always suggest to use dental floss to my patients...didn't know it solves lathe-problems too.....lathe caries ??😂
This method is great and easy and fast. Thanks K.
They ask 'how long is a peice of string' about 3ft it seems :-)
Long enough to do the job, Long enough to work for the job at hand. LOL

Better check the run out on that screw she's got the wobbles.
60" screw tough not to.

Gee thanks Randy, now I have to figure out what to do with 2 hours everyday I’ve been spending cleaning my leadscrew with Q tips. 😒
Thanks
And your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to straighten it. 😉
Thanks Chris, Thinking of replacing it, fairly worn.
Lead screw flossing. Nice!
Works Great. Thanks Richard.
Looks dangerous. I will stick to using a stiff brush.
Done properly, not at all.
