  • ITS SHEARING DAY!
So I am answering some of your most asked shearing questions...
Also, I've noticed a ewe who looks like perhaps she had some pink eye and is either temporarily blind, or permanently. So I've began treatment and hopefully she will recover.
In the lamb pen, I found a lamb that somehow broke her back leg, so I am casting the leg in hopes of a full recovery!
So what do we do with all this wool??
Comment below with some cool ideas we've never thought of before!!
    #wool #sheep #pinkeye
For all who would like to see the actual footage of shearing, I have linked an unlisted video down below. UA-cam just doesn't like me showing this, even though it is educational and a mandatory practice when raising wool sheep.
    • Shearing a sheep.

It's because the growing animal rights movement has taken so many videos of sheep being "abused" during shearing. That's not to say that abuse doesn't happen, but they take videos of professionals shearing sheep and giving them nicks because accidents happen since you can't exactly tell a sheep to stay still and frame it as abuse. It's even been found that animal rights groups will *pay* struggling workers to abuse the animals for their exposés and because so many people don't live or work on a farm they don't know the truth so they are inclined to view the videos as abuse which is really unfortunate when all Sandi and farmers like her only want to teach people and share their lives. Unfortunately youtube execs seem to have bought in to the "wool is abuse" campaign since their algorithm won't monetize these videos

A lot of people dont understand that to have a profitable and healthy animal farm business, the farmers take care of their animals and try to prevent sickness and injuries as much as possible. Watching Sandi (and other Farmers on YT) i see the transparency and real live information they give us and sometimes forgett the hate they have to deal with probably every day.
The huge animal savety and freedom movement we had in the 90's brought quite few problems to light, but sadly also threw every other farmer, who takes care of their animals and treats them right, in with the "bad bunch". And those horror stories stuck in peoples heads and even now 20-30 years later still persist. Quite a few things changed since then, but people love to ignore that.
I had a friend who is a very outspooken and opinionated vegan. The amount of information she picked up from those animal liberation groups and PETA was just mind boggling. And no matter how much "discusion" or different information you showed her, there was no reasoning with her at all. Some people are just to blinded by their opinons to SEE.
I just want to thank you Sandi for showing us what you can (despite the YT police). And give you hope that maybe for every hater you encounter, you also might show someone who has no idea what is really going on, that farming and animal handling is not all dark, dreary barns, wet flors, bad feed, Flies, rats and stink all over and dead animals in the pens with the live ones.

English riding saddles use wool. The panels, which are the long “pillow” looking structures on the underside of the saddle, are traditionally filled with wool. They use different types of wool depending on the use of the saddle. Wool is used because it conforms to the shape of a horses back, doesn’t breakdown as quickly as some fibers and can be adjusted over time if it gets compressed or the horses back muscles change shape.

Wool just needs to become "fashionable" again. There needs to be a large campaign advertising the benefits and renewable nature of wool. It fell out of fashion when synthetics came into the screen. Plus those who believe it's cruel ignore the fact that it plays a significant part in animal welfare.

The problem are big animal welfare organizations like peta... they show that wool equals pain and horrible behavior against animals... and that the wool industry is the worst ever and stuff like that. This are single companies and as u can see there are people who care for their sheep and dont behave like dicks around them... but with the picture of a devilish sheep keeper wool will not be accepted as a natural resource.. so in Germany its e.g. not a natural resource by law and many sheep farmers needed to stop keeping sheep cause it is not worth it. The best idea is to make wool soft sheep that look like our kidds. White wool can be dyed black if need be. I'm sure Billy will be very popular. Send it to teachers as an educational activity. Maybe find out if a local teacher has any ideas on how they could use it? School group visits a sheep farm; the kidos take home wool, or onsite attach(glue) wool to a picture they draw.... Art teachers could use it like a brush or sponge for creative painting techniques. Wool can be used as the fiber in natural material buildings like mudbrick homes. You mentioned in the video that you might use it in your garden, it works great for that a local farmer in my area sells it at the farmers market as cover for people's garden so I tried it and so far it has been great. However, I found that you have to wet the wool a bit so that it does not blow away the first day. I hope this makes some sense. My primary school did a lot of hands-on learning and part of that was learning how to knit/crochet/weave/sew and every year we would get some wool from a local sheep farmer and although it was a lot of work it was fun to learn about what work goes into making our clothes and not just seeing the final product. I wish more schools would do something like this.

I am a fiber artist, so I have LOTS of wool at my house. ❤🐑 Some of the ways it can be used depends on the fleece...different breeds can produce very different fleece. I use shorter belly wool for stuffing, felting, composting, nesting boxes, dryer balls & I have put what's leftover after bing in the garden. The combing removes seeds, etc. That crimpy yearling fleece would be wonderful to work.

Specifically on the brand: "Bold Lead Designs" they use wool padding for their mobility harnesses- that help people who have mobility issues by bracing on their back or using counter balance where the dog pulls forward and the person falls back- countering the person to keep them balanced and on their feet! There is also more tasks that dogs can do and if you were able to sell the wool to leather shop workers I'd believe you would be helping out alot of small and big shops!

We give our belly wool to friend of ours that is gunsmith. He uses it to pack gun parts in for shipping. Most of our wool goes to weavers and spinners that start with whole fleece. There are a lot of other uses for it, such as mattress pads in cold MN winters, felting for mittens, gloves and hats, insulation.

I would really like woolen textiles to replace all of the polar fleece textiles that are so popular right now. The polar fleece and other plastic-based textiles, while marketed as environmentally friendly because they can be made from recycled plastics, actually shed micro plastics into the waste water every time they are washed. These micro plastics are accumulating in the oceans and ocean life at an alarming rate.

I adore you Sandi, you know that! I sincerely wish people would think before they speak. People who fuss about the lambs being produced for meat are the ones who think the meat they buy in the grocery store was magically created out of thin air in a lab. Those who fuss about shearing think they're super comfy and warm wool socks or sweater they wear was, again, *poof* created out of thin air. I wish those that hate would just stop watching and commenting. Wouldn't that be easier than writing a hateful comment?! I do want to say, I've wondered before if maybe some of the malpositioning of some lambs may be a result of the shearing closer to delivery, but i know those babies move around constantly, no matter what, so it probably has nothing to do with the shearing. I hope and pray you're having a better day today and we love you here in North Carolina! 💙 Megan 💙

    Unusual uses for wool:
    1. I follow TEAM Aquascape on UA-cam. They manufacture components and build in ground ecosystem ponds. I would think wool would make a fabulous prefilter on a pond. One of the things they need in their bio-filters are objects that give the good bacteria a lot of space for the bacteria to hold on to something while water washes by - so the bacteria stays in the filter and can clean the water as it comes through. If the wool were in a loose knit nylon bag, you could then just pull it out of the system, hose it down to clean out the gunk, then drop it back into the filter system.
    2. I would definitely use it to create a footpath in the garden that you could leave untouched year to year. Till between the footpaths. Start by doing it every 10' or so, leaving paths between to be tilled under each year, giving you flexibility in the area between. In future years expand as desired. Might put down gravel first? Depends on your soil i think.
I'm too tired! LOL - drawing a blank now. Will add more later if i get inspired.

If (and when) sheep are found that have escaped and have years of wool on them the sheep are often in rough shape. Or if it's a case of negligence, not seeing is often one of the biggest issues.

It's perception. Watching a sheep being sheered, the animal is being held in an unnatural position, the animal can look like it's in some degree of distress. The action with the clippers look aggressive. A dog being groomed is standing on a grooming table, it may or may not have a loop around it's neck. Those who don't know think it's a noose. But the animal is calm, and is treated quite gently and the use of the electric clippers is more about precision and not leaving track marks in the hair or fur. A good groomer is gentle and they take they're time, having an animal that is calm and will stand still during the clipping makes it a lot easier. Dog's get clipped two or three time a year, so they learn the process. Sheep really just want to get out of there.

You inspired me to find a local sheep farm and get on their meat waiting list! I have an entire lamb coming to me in late June and I'm excited! Thank you!
Edit: If it matters to you, I bought a dorper lamb from a South African-styled farm near Albuquerque!

Sounds interesting-what is a South African-styled farm and what is a dorper lamb? Thanks!

Put into cat houses for outdoor barn cats, i line my flower pots and in my hanging baskets. You can also felt the wool on wired baskets instead of using moss! Put in dog beds that have a cover for more warm in the cold winter months. Stuff teddy bears or pillow cases!

Such a good little lamb having that leg splinted! So cute! 🐑🐑 I imagined it would show signs of discomfort, or be irritated by you immobilizinng it. Just so good!

If you tap into van life and the people who make them. They love wool for insulation in the Van's, just a thought.

Felted wool pressing mats are all the rage for quilters! Sizes range from 10-in square to large rectangles. The blocks become real flat. I have a felted blanket underneath the ironing board cover on my homemade Big Board (24-in by 48 -in) pressing surface. Perhaps someone would be interested in cleaning the fleece and making felted wool pressing mats. Quilters would love another reliable source for this item! You are an amazing woman, Sandi! Thanks for all you do.

Just a thought, wonder if there would be a acusstic sound values that might change sound densities in speakers or even sound proofing

People used to use wool cleaned and combed as batting in quilts.. as stuffing for couches and chairs and beds.. cushions for dog beds and floor pillows.. and the typical yarns for sweaters and socks. I had a friend who used to use her cleaned and pulled wool for carpets that were like rag rugs. She would run zig zag sewing thru it onto a backing strip.. then braid the strips together for a rag rug design.
Also it does work well in gardens to prevent weeds.. but make sure to leave areas for the dirt to dry out as it can literally swamp your plant roots and rot them. Aka put around plants but leave the walking rows blank or covered with hay.
That's all the info I got. Maybe you could use belly wool as pockets in one of those poofy or weighted blankets? That'd be fabulous in my book. Also birds like using it for nesting if you put it out in little chunks on hangers with clips.. or a regular hanger with added chip clips.

I don’t know if you have seen this UA-cam channel “Our Wyoming Life” yesterday I watched on his channel I saw a Calf being born from start to finish. So if he can show it why can’t you show your lambs being born and for heaven sake‘s why can you not show your sheep be in Sheard?

alot of his videos do get removed. It just takes YT a little while to catch up. It sounds like Sandi has some hater that flag some of her videos that gets YT to monitor her account closer.

I love when you were putting the lamb back in her pen and she was calling out. It totally sounded like, "MA! MA!" and her mama heard her and was right there to meet her at the gate! Anthropomorphizing? Yeah, probably. 😜

You absolutely can use wool in the garden. I am a spinner and I regularly hear about people using their seconds wool and waste wool in the garden. Also that long crimpy wool was lovely!

Regarding wool, my mom and I searched and searched for pure wool years and years ago in Ontario. We were able to source one store in Kingston and it was the last lot of wool we were able to buy. My mom use to knit Icelandic wool sweaters for us kids. It’s a shame to see no market for such a beautiful warm yarn.
