We need songs like this. For some reason, we constantly have to be reminded to care. I have never heard this before so I am grateful for the patron who suggested it.
This was their first album after their primary lyricist and bass player Roger Waters left the band. Up until then their lyrics were mostly pretty dark and cynical. This was a major departure from that, and ultimately one of my favorites by them.
This was my Dad's favourite PF song. Replaced Us and Them. Found him one night laying back on the bottom of the stairs, eyes closed, with this blasting. I knew I'd brought him into the present, then. 1987. Agree with earlier replies. Listen to a live version.
Pink Floyd goes beyond music and lyrics, they are an out of body experience that transcends the mind…🎸😎🔥👍 thanks for being real and giving your honest feedback/reaction…✌️
There is an amazing video with 9 million views. "on the turning away' (1989-07-15)FM by think Floyd 61. ******* Floyd fan since 1970. They play and sound better live in concert. Just A few can do that, "Pulse 1994"
It's a wonderful sentiment... but one that needs to keep on being said. David Gilmour has done so much himself to help the homeless charities. But quietly, with no fanfare. So he puts into action what he sngs about. As always with Pink Floyd, the live version of this is equally astounding. Keep on Rocking and take care.
You simply HAVE to check out the live version...even better than the studio version in my opinion with a very extended guitar solo...David's best, also in my humble opinion. Greetings from Cape Town, South Africa.
Great reaction. Where the speechless unite in a silent accord…….Profound 👏👏👏👏 Left field recommendation; Elvis Presley’s *If I Can Dream* would wreck you in a similar vibe to this one 👍
Thank you Tommy for reacting to my request. Pink Floyd has always been there for me,my entire life. That's why they are my second favorite band. There lyrics have gotten me through many hard times. To be able to share their work with people who might not have heard it before is awesome. The emotion that this band brings is second to none. As you saw just reading the lyrics, they know how to touch the soul. I'm glad you liked it brother.
PF has always been in my life too. I can't pick a favorite song but this one is in the top for the message, added to all the floydian touches I expect. Ty brother for recommending it.
Words hit even harder in these troubled times. And Gilmour's incredible solo just puts an amazing heartfelt bow on it. The live "momentary lapse of reason" version of this is even better. Great reaction!!
So nice, it might be my favorite PF song, it was on my list to recommend as well, so kudos patreon. This one is the message for me. I have a top 5 for PF, and they rotate, but this is up there. It was a playlist for years. Yes, i understand the feelings. It does it to me too. It's literally a plea for all of us. ❤and ✌️
We understand. Pink Floyd hits different. This is such a beautiful and emotional song that doesn't get enough attention, and as is always the case with Pink Floyd the live version is a must. There are a couple heartbreakingly beautiful parts that aren't in the studio version. It's from the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert. From that same concert is Dogs of War, which almost no one reacts to but it's a great song, totally different from this one, with a sax solo that'll melt your face off.
Mr. W ... there's absolutely no need to apologize for being human and own "working" emotions! You are paying a compliment to the composers and performers by tearing up to the lyrics and music. It's beautiful when an undertaking of a musical sort meshes and fully works to its ultimate level. Enjoy. Let the tears flow. To do so is healthy.
I've been listening to Pink Floyd since I was a kid. I love them so much, I have a Pink Floyd tattoo on my arm This song has one of the most beautiful solos of all time! I cried with you. The world would be beautiful if everyone believed and did what this song is saying.
Good afternoon from Warwickshire England 🏴. Never be ashamed of showing your feelings to a PF song. I cry every time I hear there music , having lost my son in 2022 he loved PF , he was a guitarist but could never remember how to start the solo to this song 😢
Thanks for replying. I’m 74 and have been lucky enough to have seen PINK FLOYD twice in London 1991 I believe, and yes they are has good live as they are on vinyl
You should check this out live!! Pulse concert It’s really something to behold ❤ This song is deep .. love Pink Floyd so much I’m 55 I’ve listened to this since I was a young teen It never gets old ❤
We grew up during the rock area. No racism, no looking down on others. Just listening to good music with a message and enjoying each other's company. Then social media kicked in and blew it all to hell. Peace brother and thanks for listening to the music we grew up with. It does change ur life.
Please don't ever apologize for showing or feeling your honest feelings! Unfortunately, men have been programmed that this is, somehow , a weakness. I'm fairly new to your channel, and so far I'm loving it! You can't lose with Pink Floyd imo... I really love RUSH too, so I'd love to hear your reaction to them (any song), as well. Thanks for your honesty and appreciation for great music, friend! 💖 xx Cynthia
We'v all got some songs or series that help us time to time to empty our burden, even if we don't know we've got one ^^ Being overwhelmed is frequent. Taht's just important to let it out to feel better some moments later.
Please don't be sorry for having a stong reaction to music like this. It is meant to make you feel and/or think. Your reaction was heartfelt and beautiful. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and for being strong enough to be vulnerable with us publicly, it is beautiful and an inspiration. Can I suggest also checking out The Fixx song Outside?
Pink Floyd is everything, musically. They are just masters of their craft, and even calling them masters is doing them a disservice I think. Idk where you live at, but there is a band that still tours called Brit Floyd that you should one billion percent go and see if you get the chance. Calling them a cover band is doing them a disservice. They are kind of Pink Floyd redux. Just bite the bullet and buy tickets. They are the closest you can come to actually seeing Floyd these days, and they are more than worth the admission.
This came out in 1987, when many people of their generation were indeed turning away from the ideals expressed in the 60s. I feel that the optimistic ending is important, but in my darker moments I think it's a lost cause: turning away is the easy option, and everyone is so tired it's simpler to do nothing and then blame the immigrants, the young, the _other._ Consider street beggars: do you walk past, or do you give them money? Many are so crushed they'll spend it on drugs or booze, and you'll have enabled that habit. So you can justify walking past because "it won't help them anyway". I've taken to asking if they want me to buy them some food or a hot drink, but that takes time and costs more, so I'll do it once or twice then ignore the rest with a quick "sorry". It's as much as I can manage right now, which makes no difference to the ones I walk past. "Is it only a dream that there'll be no more turning away?" Maybe, but it's a dream worth hanging on to, even part of the time. Peace.
I think that's where Wisdom comes in and what does "Help" look like to everyone. I have seen that alot of people abuse their circumstance to take advantage or ones kindness. I understand what you mean.

Your crying because the song strikes a chord of truth. We should all be crying, if we were the world would be a much better place. Unfortunately far too many choose the turning away.
This is not golden era Floyd, but still an incredible song and album. If you want golden era Floyd you gotta go back to Meddle, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall.... all of which need to be experienced as a whole rather than individual tracks.

Easily the most powerful song on this album and one of the best post-Roger Floyd songs they did. Good work by you @gabrielkain1 for this one! Phenomenal song. Side note: the live performance of it on Delicate Sound of Thunder concert is also great!
Treat yourself with the live version of this. Besides the solo, it gives you a chance to see (and hear) Rachel Fury ;-)
Yea, I got the live version coming soon.
Absolutely true! Great advice. 🤘

Emotional music sonically AND lyrically. Tears drawn forth by the words woven among the music notes and rhythm.
Overwhelmed is the correct word.
Grew up punk, hard rock, but Floyd overwhelmed me. My fav band by far.
You need to listen to the Delicate Sound of Thunder version to appreciate this song. One of the best solos 🎸
If this song was our national anthem we couldn’t go far wrong ✨ no, I’m not dissing the national anthem
