It’s loose vanos bolts, rod knock is loud, steady with rpm (sounds like a knock not a rattle) and comes from the bottom of the engine. Pop off the valve cover and you’ll see loose or missing vanos bolts at the sprocket end of the cams. Don’t run the engine until you get it sorted. If you do, you’ll end up losing the bolts or timing and end up with damage.
Thanks quick reply 🙏 yes I saw in previous comments it was rod bearings and am trying to determine if my sound is normal or problematic. So the knock on this car was present after warm up as well?
@@d21spike thanks man! Just checked earlier today - oil and oil filter is clean. The knock disappears after only 1 minutes after cold start. Hopefully it’s something normal as claimed in other threads.
sounds like rod bearings. you can get some life out of it if you keep the revs super low while driving, but best to replace. what did you do to your car before getting this sound? redlining the shit out of it?
Not mine, owner bought it not that long ago. Got a drivetrain malfunction and noise. Decided to clean the VANOS solenoids and change the oil. Solenoids were full of shavings. He cleaned them out but the malfunction and noise stayed. When I got to it, checked out the usual bolts backing out on the VANOS and getting codes to follow parts. Ends up being a faulty solenoid that caused the malfunction, but the noise is left. Suspecting spun bearing but can't be sure until it's torn apart. Either way, a replacement is cheaper than a rebuild.
Well the light random tap sounds like a bad vacuum pump . Mine went . Then you also have a possible bad rocker arm . The third noise is that wrap and that is a possible rod bearing .

@@d21spike interesting I had an engine that sounded just like that and it was vanos bolts. Bummer about the rod bearings.
@@alexr.9623 yeah that was my first guess when I found out about the recall.
Did it disappear after warm up? I have similar sound for 1 min after cold start, after that it’s fine all day driving. No fault codes at any time.
It was inconsistent but ended up being rod bearings.

@@dimitarn460 I believe so. Your best bet looking for shavings. Whether it's in the oil, oil filter, or the screens on the vanos solenoids.

@@dimitarn460hey I got a werid scraping knock at idle as well. Did you ever figure out what it was ? Thanks in advance!

Hey Dmitriy, Did the owner of the vehicle end up getting a replacement engine? My X3 w/ N55 engine has the same sound and I'm afraid its a rod bearing

Vanos Gears. The bolts shear off. Replace valve cover and vanos gears.
Autoscope in redlands ca fixed my 1Series. Had the same problem.
