Black Texas teen fights school suspension: ‘Why should I cut my hair for education?’

- Black Texas teen Darryl George has been suspended from school twice over his hairstyle. George’s initial suspension came just before the Crown Act passed, which bans hair-related discrimination in Texas. “My hair has nothing to do with my education,” said the 18-year-old.

There's nothing wrong with his hair. What's more important: an education or conformed hair?
They're not the only minorities who get discriminated. But always put their issues on a pedestal for everyone to see..
@@SlimMichaelSpaghetti you are selfish for making the situation about you, always stand up for yourself, but there’s no reason for you to shut other issues down. With this type of crab in a barrel mentality, you will get nowhere.
@@officialalonzo263 This conversation has nothing to do with me owning a profitable business. There are even more Hispanics than ya'll. You're not even the largest minority
@@SlimMichaelSpaghetti Hispanic is a ethnicity, and ignorance is prevalent. This has nothing to do with your business or your minority.
@@officialalonzo263 Hispanics are a minority. And I am talking about minorities. You're looking pretty bad.
School district making problems where there are no problems.
the Spongebob Texas meme exists for a reason
I've never heard of a student getting suspended for their hair style... That's so stupid
Its been happening. They even tried to disqualify a wrestler, once they realized he was winning, over his hair. They made him cut it in the gym. Disgusting
Well not school but I went to job corps before and they really streak about hair style like no color hair or hair covering up your face some bull crap like that
❤
That's because you never walk out of your little circle for your entirity of your life. Plently or organizations around the world banned individualism. Military, school, company...they all do it to promote social harmony.
At a place called “Barbers”
He's going to High School, not joining the mililtary. What in the actual?
Interestingly enough, cornrows are an approved military haircut for women. Makes sense, it keeps it tight and out of the way.
Just let him go to school. Leave the hair alone . Its not hurting anyone. Denying him an education over a hairstyle or length shameful
then black kids are blamed for not engaging in school-related endeavors.
@@chynaaa2551That part!
We go to school to learn that there are policies that we need to follow , not only hair styles but many policies that don't work for many otheres
@@saesedi9513 yeah I never went to a school that denied education based on a hairstyle.
This is all about power and control. This is extremely upsetting. Good for him for fighting this. It’s extra stress on him but he is fighting for everyone’s rights. This is heartbreaking his school memories have to be tarnished by this.
This is discrimination and racism. Nothing to do with power and control. I've been through this same thing here in North Carolina 20 years ago in school. This happens all the time. You will never hear this happening to a kid from any other ethnic group.
( I think I gonna research this ) 🤔
We are being taught to never express or stand up for our selves. This has caused harm to him and others sad.
He is a silly teen and needs to fight for something worth fighting for like self-discipline and respect for law and order. Hair can grow back after he leaves the school. Children in African schools typically cut their hair and would be laughing at this American teen for his stupidity.
It's sad but think about Fortune 500 companies, they are also very strict on dress, hair and tattoos.
@@carol6445 This is a school, not a Fortune 500 company.
I think everyone should style their hair how they want. Obviously his hair is fine and this is just petty.
@Melissa-dd8uo I'll be cooking my own meals for now on 😂
@LadieKatie Having a hair length requirement in a public school is the craziest thing I have ever heard. Texas sure is a "free state" huh. Never seen this in Michigan, seems we have more rights up here.
@@michaeltoma9329 that’s exactly my point, and on top of that these are children!
@LadieKatieYes, rules like these do indeed constitute de facto racist policies. There’s absolutely no reason why a public high school should be making rules about what sort of hair style students can choose to wear. The only rules these students should subject to are the ones regarding safe and respectful behavior regarding the treatment of their teachers, classmates and school property.
As long as it’s not an unnatural color or unkempt.
His hair is tight and neat and would not block anyone's view from behind so what exactly is the problem with his hair? What difference does it make how long it is if it's tucked up out of the way?
Does anyone else see the irony in a student suspended for his HAIRSTYLE at a school named “BARBERS HILL?” 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Weird that the school doubled down after he had it under wraps/lockdown, weird flex on the school, invited this lawsuit, congratulations.
When is the principal going to get fired over this. You can’t create a school policy that goes against a federal law.
But thing is...these standards have been around for decades. Even for white students.
Y'all need to get rid of Abbott. That's the problem
These are basic standards for all children.
Why should this kid be allowed to break the rules?
@@davidrobertsemail exactly thank you
@@davidrobertsemail the kid isn’t breaking any rules. The principal is breaking the law. The Supreme Court has held that
Federal Law > State Law > Local Law > Private or Public Policy
personally I think that if there's going to be this kind of rule at all,, it needs to be backed up by some pretty comprehensive "no stones unturned" supporting arguments. Hairstyle is culture, end of story, and making a rule about hairstyle is cultural discrimination, end of story. There is no way to argue that hairstyle is not culture, and there is no way to argue that limiting hairstyle is not cultural discrimination.
@@caseystrange You could say the same for your subpar culture.
Spot on correct.
@@TravisDoesKayakFishing and enlighten us on how our culture or yours is subpar. Both people's have done amazing things. And guess what... we have all suffered.
Well I don’t necessarily see it as cultural….but no matter the case, question is why does hair matter? Like okay if you have 8 foot long hair running on the floor, it’s a safety issue of tripping people lol. But this case, what’s the harm? Do you Americans live in North Korea? Cuz over there, barbers are only allowed to like 10 hair styles lol. Yay American freedom. So free. Most freedom I’ve ever seen anywhere on earth lol *roll eyes*
@@testaccount1055 it's not a debate, though, because of the definition of the word culture. all fashion IS culture, along with all other culture such as music, film, work practices, expectations for dress code at work/school, ,,, all expectations for behavior is culture, all behavior is also culture. The magnitude of the importance of the culture is what people debate,, that's not "important enough" culture. For example hair cut and dress code, is engineered cultural discrimination. By controlling these things, it's then easier to enforce other behaviors on people, because the magnitude of the enforcement is already "ice-broken". dresscode is specifically to ensure "kinds of people" and "kinds of behavior" are easier to prevent access to. In other words, dress-code was INVENTED as a discrimination practice. that's the definition of the word. --- whether or not it is considered acceptable discrimination or unacceptable and illegal is the question.
Honestly he seems like a nice kid trying to go school just like any other students. His hair nice and stylish and presentable. Come on guys this is a public school not military let this kid continue his education.
They’ve suspended him twice even though Texas has Crown Act laws?? This is crazy
The fact that certain people are trying to control melanated people hair is sickening!!! Still looking at us as property!!
No it isn't even about that. White students have standards they have to abide by too or does he get a pass because extra melanin?
@@becca6663 you do realize that he is fighting to end discrimination against hair. So that means the white kids will by default be benefiting from it too. I’m not sure why you are going against it because the kid who is speaking up is black. That’s kinda weird….
@@KeepItCute22 everyone needs to abide by a standard and dress codes.
@@KeepItCute22 I'm not saying that it isn't beneficial in the long term but there are standards for a reason.

Don't cut your hair no matter what anyone says. So proud of you for standing up for your right to be who you are. Im also proud of your family for standing behind you. May God see and bless you & your family. This is a racist act on behalf of your school. 👑💨💪🏾🙏🏾♥️
Not racist, it's sexist...allowing women to grow their hair but men can't.
As a teacher. Focus on teaching. Not your students' hairstyle
I totally agree... they are kids for God sakes. We all went thru trends and fashion. His principles probably had a Mohawk in his younger days in high school..lol
Its the principal with a vendetta.
I totally agree... leave them kids alone they not fighting or creating at school..
We support you Darryl! Stand up for what is right!
To understand the school district’s position, I would need to see the hairstyles the district references in its statement to understand how those comply with the policy and why this one doesn’t. (The example shown seemed to coincide with another example of one that doesn’t comply.) The hair looks neat and reasonably maintained. It looks like it’s kept up off the neck and ears, though I’m not sure why that’s necessary. There doesn’t appear to be a safety or hygiene issue so far as I can tell. It doesn’t appear to be a style that would interfere with someone’s education.
Keeping him out of the classroom for this reason seems a bit much. The punishment isn’t proportional to the infraction.
There is nothing wrong with his hair. He is in compliance with their original dress code which does not mention the word length nor the phrase length when let down. He was suspended in August just before the CROWN Act Law was passed in September after a judge ruled in a previous court case brought against them that their dress code is discriminatory in regard to them suspending two black male students because of their Locs. One was a senior, who three months before graduation was told that he could not walk at his graduation unless he cut his Locs and the other student was his cousin a sophomore who was kicked out of the band. The senior, Deandre Arnold went to another school and graduated with his Locs. The school and the school district ignored the judge's ruling and suspended Darryl George for the same reason they suspended the two cousins in 2020. The school and the school district read the CROWN Act Law after it passed, saw that it didn't say anything about length, so, the school and the school district revised their dress code by adding the phrase length when let down to it. This was done to circumvent (get around) the CROWN Act so that they can continue to discriminate against black students (black male students in particular) regarding their hair.
@@janetpaul137 I agree with you. There's nothing wrong with his hair.
A educational system taking away education and everything that comes with it for the good of society, over hair. Humans are funny animals.
Looks pretty short to me, heck this haircut been around for 30 years at least and suddenly the school loses their minds over this
ridiculous, im really conservative and theres NOTHING wrong with his hair. this IS discrimination.
his hair is neat and looks professional. this is crazy. is this a private school?
probably not. but it is a school in Texas.
“Professional”
This is ridiculous, education is more important than hair. This young man is an individual who is allowed to express himself in any way he wants. His hair is absolutely fine. It is neat and tidy.
Just sue the school for violating your civil liberties.
This is completely one sided reporting.
Show the hairstyle he’s allowed to wear and the one he isn’t.
This is terrible parenting.
Dont cut your hair
The school district being named as barbers Hill is ironic
I know right
And there's a Barber Shop right across the street from the school.
The agenda continues. Stand strong young man and parents. May your ancestors fight for you.
Was always in ISS or getting suspended from school for mostly my hair when it was long. The amount of classroom time I missed JUST because of hair. I’m glad this is being brought up because this is ridiculous.
Im an old white guy...There is nothing wrong with that kids hair. Its tied up and not keeping him from seeing anything. What a load of BS
This is definitely a violation of the Crown act, I shouldn’t get penalized for the Hair growing out of my head Naturally and locs are a natural hairstyle for people of African descent. My hair is not wavy and my hair defines gravity and it also locks together. This is most definitely discrimination.
I was suspended for my hair for all 4 years of highschool. I went to school in the 90s, and a female. Its ridiculous they want people to change their hair for frivolous reasons.
Not sure why they even go to school when their future is in prison. smh
Exactly just like Obama
I wonder what they want to change next? What is bothering them so much that would lead to suspension? It’s bull 💩 and hateful behavior against another young black child. America needs to get these racially charged teachers out of our schools and do better background check on who’s teaching our children
~I AM NOT MY HAIR~
My hair does not define me nor challenge my ability to learn.
What’s next..? Making them go blonde with straight bangs..?😂
Because his locs 🙄🤦♀️ They have many more important things to worry about🙄😑
We would think so...
Why not simply follow the rules ? 🙄😒🙄😒🙄😒🙄😒
You might think they'd be even slightly self-aware and wouldn't exclude Black people from school because of their hair. But it's Texas of course, even if they did know anything about American history they wouldn't care: The cruelty is the point. Terrible place.
LEAVE HIM ALONE!!!!
LET THIS YOUNG MAN
WEAR HIS HAIR AS HE
WISHES!!!!!!😊
I'm sorry, no. Take it all the way up to the supreme court if you have to😡
I want to see the hairstyle he had when suspended.
I’m an 80 y.o. White woman in CA. Your hair is fine, keep up the fight.
This is a slippery slope… if we allow cornrows, braids or even dreadlocks, it's not going to just stop there. Who knows what they will demand next, women wearing pants?!
Why is this student's hair an Issue?
He also needs to understand that rules apply to everyone.
Good for you, young man.
The kid is logical. The education system...well look at it. Let the kid go learn and whoever is suspending him you waste peoples oxygen
I said before, nothing wrong with that hair. I had long hair when i went to high school. I don't buy the "my people act" though, own up to it and fight.
I like this news reporter’s style of reporting
Bigotry period!
Never heared of one pinky forced to cut the lice heads!
It's been illegal for us to wear our hair natural
We had to keep our hair covered since June 2 1786. It is 2023, and we can't wear our hair natural to this day. The only thing changed is the years not how we're still being treated smh.
Places still exists with rules like this?
Attend the school board meeting, when it is your time at the podium say "Jesus had long hair too", drop the mic, walk out, and show up for class the next morning.
Texas. This is going viral nationally so we all see you Greg Poole.
Dont Cut your hair!!!!!❤
The school is taking it too far. Let him go to school. Yes definitely need to be sued.
It's ridiculous. His hair is not the issue they are. Vote 💙
"Gimme your head with HAIR! Long beautiful hair..."
69' yea we wore long hair in HS, if he was white he could wear long hair. *RACIST TEXAS AGAIN*
The hairstyle braids is worn world wide, ive seen asian, whites celebs, fashion models , others it can't be the style, the FDA is banning chemical straighteners due to types of cancer.i don't see how you can ban hair texture.
The governor and attorney general probably doesn't care.
Make Abbott accountable for his off the wall policies! This is definitely discrimination!
Ironic…The school system is called “Barber’s Hill”😹
Hair length? That's some bulshit right there!
This kid knew what the dress code was. Life isn't all about you. It's not discrimination if everyone has to do it. Period. White, Red, Black, whatever learn to get along. Go to a different school instead of tying up the courts looking for a payout over you hairdo. And gross about the dead grandparents hair in there ewwww
When I look at his hair, to me, it appears perfectly neat, clean and respectable. I wouldn't think twice about seeing this hairstyle along with a 3 piece suit. It just appears to be his unique style in my eyes.
Why are they doing this to him? His hair looks neat...I have not seen this done to others.
They are trying to break his mind. How can someone learn like this?
This is crazy!
Because us white people have to do the same thing.
This has nothing to do with your skin color.
Respect for the student that stood his ground for it. Government should not regulate student dress codes
A kid that wants to get an education? No one or thing should stand in their way. Especially something as silly as hair. I hope he goes on to become a great attorney and stand up against these stupid laws/rules.
Other folks wear their hair the way they want to, right??
Shades of the 60’s and early 70’s! Texas hasn’t changed one iota since I was in HS.
Where are all the "its just hair" people at?
Suspending someone over their hair is ignorant; unless it is a safety hazard.
Dallas, TX
His hair looks nice.
I really can't stand it when any institution tries to dictate how people should look. I understand the need for a dress code, but that's where it should stop. For instance, I was pretty annoyed when, after being hired as a manager at UPS, I was told to shave my beard. As a bald man, I never faced any mockery for my baldness while I had my beard. But after I shaved it to comply with UPS's standards, the names and insults began: Uncle Fester, Mr. Clean, Powder, "you look like a thumb." So, I quit and regrew my precious beard.
wow. Maybe work for USPS my carrier in Central VA looked like ZZ top.
@@SongceraiHill A lot of people that worked there did, but once I got a management position, they told me it had to go.
@@TheModelOmega Unfortunate. A go-tee looks pretty stylish on most bald men : )
A law for your hair? Jesus Christ!! Banana Republic, man..
Imagine if they made such a big deal about other hazards to schools and students.
He shouldn’t have to cut his hair. It’s pathetic a school would go that far.
I mean, the superintendent has a good point.. Everyone has to follow the rules.
No he doesn’t. According to the policy his hair shouldn’t go past his earlobes. As a brotha with locs that go to my butt his hair is pretty short especially cause he has a barrel style .
@@jaquanpowell4605 hey as a white dude I can't gauge how long his hair is, but I'm assuming the people at his school do. I was under the impression it was like if a white dude put his hair in a pony tail.. might not go past his earlobes but it's still breaking their rules. I'm man enough to say I may be wrong though!
The state of Texas is wasting its money on this case. Just leave this man alone.
The society is sickening…
Why have hundreds, thousands of students cut their hair over the years? Go to another school if it is so important to you! It is NOT a big enough deal to jeopradize your EDUCATION.......
Wouldn't have that's not technically be considered more natural considering hair doesn't cut itself?
We all know what this is. Smh...
This is nothing more than the school targeting this kid for fighting for his right to wear his hair the way he chooses. His hair isn't creating a disruption in anyone's education so why does he continue to be harassed by the school?
You can homeschool or change schools. It is not worthy fighting big men and women.
Let everyone wear head scarves in school. It is what is in your head and not your hairstyles.
Dr. Candace Matthews puts me in mind of the late Flo Kennedy...Anyway, I think Dr. Matthews mentions that this young man has hair from his ancestors (2:50) woven into his own style. That is a beautiful, proud tradition, a kind of homage: and...something to be honored and respected. I am Italian, and Caucasian and even I can totally understand why this young man feels and acts like this. Bravo, young bro!!
My God what this world is coming to. I hope this young man wins this battle.
He can't pick his hair style, but people can pick their genders. The caucasity of it all.
This education system man... ain't nothing wrong with having hair like that. It's when you get to unnatural and tacky hairstyles that's the issue. Gimme a break. This looks well groomed and kept up. Not just there.
But his hair is perfectly neat and fine though
rules are not meant to be broken, doesnt excuse that rule's existance.
If there is a dress code there is a dress code. But his hair is put up its not below his eyes and ears.
His hair looks fine to me. Now if a kid has lice or something that’s a whole other situation.
I mean there's a standard for white students too. We weren't allowed to have any unnatural hair colors and no distracting make up like having a star next to your eye or on your cheekbone. Multiple students were suspended for it. Not just black ones.
I'm so sorry but I have a question: I'm wondering at 2:49 is that a suspicious lump on the back of Darryl's neck?
they said because he is a boy, his hair have to be short.
This boy should go to UK for school
So if I go to eat somewhere and the wait persons hair is hanging in my food, I just won't eat there.
Im sending it back. And ordering something else.
