"Arguing that you don't care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say." ~ Edward Snowden Edward Snowden had the guts to expose the NSA and fight for your privacy. It matters. Just like all the military men who fought and died for YOUR freedom...Edward is a hero.
The funny thing is that this movie is based on actual events and most of the things shown in this movie are happening right now and they are real and its actually seems like nobody cares being spied on their phones and through their own cameras. Its actually scary that this is happening right under our eyes.
There has been no correlation between stopping terrorists and surveying everyone on the planet. And if you think about it. It makes no sense to survey everyone at the same time. No matter how many people are at the NSA, they can't filter the entire internet pool. You can't find the needle in a haystack if you looking at the whole thing all the time. No you need to check individual locations, not take everything into account all the time. That doesn't work. Personally I find him to be a hero, and that's my opinion and you don't have to agree. He gave up his freedom and put himself into harms way to let us know what the government was illegally doing behind the worlds back, and against the trust of US companies such as google and Microsoft. He deserves to be commended for his bravery not exiled, or jailed or killed.
This. Mass surveillance is ironic in that it provides TOO much information - it causes essentially information overload in the State's security agencies, so you have tons people trying to sort out completely random information where the signal is almost indistinguishable from a much louder noise. And meanwhile we can't stop some idiot who talked about jihad with his coworkers and who was investigated TWICE from shooting up a night club.
"Most Americans don't want freedom, they want security" "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." -Benjamin Franklin
Horny Aleks The government spies on you and collects data on you, because they have deemed you untrustworthy. What they are doing normally would require a court order signed by a judge for each and every person, this is a complete circumvention of the fourth amendment of constitution (the highest law of the land) and it is treasonous for those that took the oath to protect the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic (every government official has to take this oath). Snowden was the whistle blower that brought all of this to light, of course they would accuse him of doing the exact thing that he caught them doing. The government is collecting a massive file on each and everyone of you. The fact of the matter is that there is no digital vault that has not gone uncracked (office of personal management breach of june 2015 exposing 21 million peoples data) and the mere presence of a file with your personal data endangers you. All of this was done in the name of security.
+3vil3lvis not only that, but it doesnt guarantee any saftey at all, and the evidence resides in the last terrorists attacks. The guys who did it were all on the CIA's watch list yet they didnt stop it (either they couldnt, or just let it happen). Collecting massive data is just adding more haystack to the pile, because 99.99% of all the data is garbage... unless they have other motives.
+3vil3lvis “I think it’s important to recognize that you can’t have 100 percent security and also then have 100 percent privacy and zero inconvenience. We’re going to have to make some choices as a society" Barack Obama
***** Well, BLM is a legal organization that likes to protest in the United States. There is really no relationship between that and Edward Snowden, a guy that filled up a portable hard drive with secrets and fled to Russia. You should really get a better perspective on things.
@Bryan J typical nonspecific defense of mass surveillance, all based on the presence of possible and theoretical dangers, while completely dismissing even discussion of the negative implications of such actions. You actually want to protect America from terrorists? Then don't support our immoral foreign policies and actions that create them in the first place. All of the actual terrorist attacks we have faced have been easily foreseeable direct responses to our own actions, mostly by groups that at one time we helped fund and/or train. If you don't want to deal with Bin ladens, then don't arm and train them. If you don't want to go to war with a guy like Saddam, don't put him in power in the first place. Pumping more money into supposed "defense" does nothing to increase our safety, it only grows our out of control military even further, which always leads to more warmongering to justify the endless spending increases, which leads to more wars, which increases our actual danger. It's a vicious violent wasteful idiotic cycle, time to spin the other way with massive cuts in spending, less instigated enemies, less dead innocent foreign civilians, and less US soldier casualties
Is that so. So its ok for US to spy on other nations but not their own people. Hypocrites! Government has the responsibility to protect their people and it cannot do so without intelligence. So if you hate the idea then take whatever terrorist acts that falls on your country. Germany ran the same "freedom" speech with heavy migration agenda and now suffering for it. Sweden, a once very peaceful place now in turmoil. When God imposed restrictions on ancient Israel, they rebelled in their defiance of freedom. However God executed many of them with his insistence on compliance. No one has unaccountable freedom
if he was a traitor then who did he betray? it sure as hell wasnt the people because all the info he leaked was for the people's well being. he betrayed a tyrannical government, which in my book, is a a good thing
All the guy did was tell us all something that we already knew; even if you failed to read your cell phone contracts, phone surveillance had been the subject of every late-night monologue and sketch-comedy show from 2001 to 2008. Snowden is only a hero to the kind of person whose biggest fear is that the government will find out that his search history contains "Game of Thrones torrent" and "nude shapchat hacks".
This was all talked about for years, a former employee form AT&T had already been speaking about this when he discovered a room where all communication was going through and could be tapped. It was all called a "conspiracy theory" but by Snowden releasing the documents it just confirmed it.
Government surveillance was already exposed by Russ Tice, who beat Snowden to it, who is the real hero in all this, then after him Thomas Drake, another NSA employee beat Snowden to it as well, however few people paid attention to this as both were in their 50s and overweight, thus not "sexy" enough for the media. Snowden on the other hand, a 20 something year old hipster, was much easier on the eyes. Its the Anna Chapman effect, the Russian spy who was caught by the FBI, she was one of 10 spies in the ring, and was also one of the least successful, but can you name any of the others? No, because she had big jugs and the rest didnt. The reason many dislike Snowden is because much of the classified data he stole (such as files on NSA's surveillance of Taliban in Pakistan) had nothing to do with "personal freedoms" and were clearly stolen just so he could use them as a bargaining chip to extract asylum demands from different nations.
no thank you, that's illegal. I kind of like the experience of a theater with popcorn and the occasional screaming child and the lady who won't quit using her instagram while sitting in the teather distracting everybody. bye!
+airmaildeal if exposing the widespread disregard of the Constitution by the US government makes him a traitor then I question what country you think you live in
Shaq Lopez quì non si tratta di lodare Snowden, quì si tratta di aver messo luce ad un governo bastardo, vigliacco e criminale. L'America è il veleno del pianeta
Antonio I don't speak Spanish, but I assume maybe yu disagree.. he let Americans know they are being spied on by their own government.. EVERY TEXT, EVERY PHONE CALL, EVERY EMAIL. is seen by the government.
+Sriragh Ravindran You forgot the edit, don't worry thought I got you: Edit: Top comments that change stuff suck, but thanks for the gold! Also please allow me to plug my movie related sub /r/topfilms. Join us!
President Obama didn't leak 1.5 million classified documents, non of which result in privacy concerns... instead focused on actual legitimate spying on foreign states and non-state actors, such as terrorist groups... sooooo
Mass surveillance. He has claimed the NSA read all of your comments, posts, emails, IMs, etc. That they listen into your phone calls, or have that ability to do so, on a mass scale. This is a lie. Even his own leaked documents show as much. Everything, all of the 1.5 million documents or so he leaked to the Russians, and the world were mostly on foreign powers, as you'd expect. Only one program _could_ target US persons, and that's FISA section 215. Which, has been shown in his leaked documents, and subsequent follow up reviews of other documents, and investigations, do not break the law, and had numerous protections in place for privacy and civil liberties. So, lets define what "metadata" is in this context: According to the NSA/ODNI (officially and through the leaks), it is data that describes other data - such as for emails: The email addresses, and *_NOT_* the content of the emails... for phone call data, it is merely the duration of the call, the calling/receiving numbers. This can be noted on the Office of the Inspector General's 'Implementation of section 215 of the US patriot act and section 702 of the FISA amendments act of 2008' lawfareblog.com/nsa-ig-report-reveals-new-information-section-702-collection On page 153 for Section 215 (which was the only thing that dealt with US persons): "The BR (Business Records) order requires that providers produce to NSA certain information about telephone calls, principally those made within the US and those between the US & foreign countries. This information is limited to BR metadata, which includes information concerning telephone numbers used to make and receive calls, when the calls took place, and how long the calls lasted but doesn't not include information about the content of the calls, the names of the participants, or the cell site location information (CSLI)." ^That report was declassified around Feb of this year. Only in September of this year, another report, declassified from the DOJ's IG for the FBI's use of section 215 from 2012-2014. www.lawfareblog.com/doj-oig-report-use-section-215 For that, I'd skip to page 8, titled, 'The process for seeking section 215 orders' Now, as for Snowden's documents in which support the Governments claims in these reports, nsarchive.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB436/docs/EBB-023.pdf ^Skip to page 15 (of the scan also as page 19 of the PDF). Through to the next page - where it defines what metadata is: "Metadata is data that describes other data, specifically information that describes the content, events or networks associated with SIGINT targets. For example, for an email message, it would include the sender and recipient email addresses. It does not contain the subject line or the text of the email; they are considered to be content. Likewise, for a telephone conversation, metadata would include the called number and the calling number as well as the duration of the call." We also know Snowden failed his annual NSA test for section 702 and 215 - he actually complained it was rigged to be too hard. The test accounted for knowledge on the privacy protection, authorisation, and several other factors that should be noted. This claim is supported by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence's report, 'Executive summary of review of the unauthorized disclosures of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden' www.lawfareblog.com/house-intelligence-committee-releases-snowden-report-summary "It is also not clear Snowden understood the numerous privacy protections that govern the activities of the IC. He failed basic annual training for NSA employees on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and complained the training was rigged to be overly difficult. This training included explanations of the privacy protections related to the PRISM program that Snowden would later disclose." Where else has Snowden lied? Well, to that lets look at some interviews and claims made about how he tried to warn the NSA about the legalities involved. The biggest touting place for the claim comes from an article by VICE, 'Exclusive: Snowden Tried to Tell NSA About Surveillance Concerns, Documents Reveal' The documents in question come from a FOIA lawsuit as noted by several experts in the legal and national security realm, as well as anyone such as myself who simply read the actual documents, well - we arrive at a totally different conclusion. They show Snowden didn't send any emails but one, which was focused on asking for clarification on a training slide, and had two additional contacts with compliance officials unrelated to raising legal or privacy concerns about NSA programs. For a much more in-depth break down, I'd suggest reading here: 'VICE's Vice: Snowden Scoop Promises Fire, Doesn't Even Muster Smoke' www.lawfareblog.com/vices-vice-snowden-scoop-promises-fire-doesnt-even-muster-smoke We also have a well-documented research paper, on the issue titled ' In defense of FAA section 702: An examination of its justification, operational employment, and legal underpinnings' Some key notes to take away from the document: www.hoover.org/sites/default/files/research/docs/indefenseoffaasection702_inglis-kosseff.pdf "If NSA employees fail to follow any of the detailed limitations on their ability to collect or use the Section 702 data, they are subject to a number of internal compliance positions, including the employees’ supervisors, NSA’s director of civil liberties and privacy, NSA’s general counsel, and NSA’s inspector general. And while concerns about potential abuse properly inform the diligence with which controls are designed and enforced, numerous and extensive investigations conducted by outside parties before and after the sensational claims of Edward Snowden in 2013 have yet to document a single case of abuse of Section 702 data by an individual or a systemic abuse by the NSA. Indeed, as Geoffrey Stone, the Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago and a member of the President’s 2013 NSA Review Group, stated in an op-ed in March 2014: _From the outset, I approached my responsibilities as a member of the Review Group with great skepticism about the NSA. I am a long-time civil libertarian, a member of the National Advisory Council of the ACLU, and a former Chair of the Board of the American Constitution Society._ _To say I was skeptical about the NSA is, in truth, an understatement. I came away from my work on the Review Group with a view of the NSA that I found quite surprising._ _Not only did I find that the NSA had helped to thwart numerous terrorist plots against the United States and its allies in the years since 9/11, but I also_ _found that it is an organization that operates with a high degree of integrity and a deep commitment to the rule of law._ _Like any organization dealing with extremely complex issues, the NSA on_ _occasion made mistakes in the implementation of its authorities, but it invariably reported those mistakes upon discovering them and worked conscientiously to correct its errors._ _The Review Group found no evidence that the NSA had knowingly or intentionally engaged in unlawful or unauthorized activity. To the contrary, it has put in place carefully-crafted internal procedures to ensure that it operates within the bounds of its lawful authority."_ And the conclusion: *A complete examination of Section 702 reveals a program that is painstakingly designed* *to protect the privacy of US persons to the greatest extent possible while also* *gathering valuable intelligence for national security.* *Section 702 achieves the twin goals of the Constitution’s* *preamble: providing for the common defense and securing the blessings of liberty.* And as noted in an extensive 2013 analysis, the United States is the only nation in the world where “. . . _such surveillance is subject to review by courts presided over by_ _federal judges,_ _with appeals possible to the US Supreme Court._ _The law enforcement agencies tasked with complying with FISA_ _are required to provide regular compliance reports to the_ _Congressional committees with responsibility over national security.”_ Given the Constitution’s mandate for limited but effective government, this burden is both appropriate and well imposed. It remains the gold standard in a world searching for the means to achieve the dual aims of security and the defense of individual liberties. *The critics of Section 702 have failed to provide persuasive evidence that Section 702 is either unconstitutional* *or bad public policy, and therefore have not made the case for modification or repeal of the law. For that reason, Congress should* *reauthorize Section 702 without any significant amendments." So, after all of this, and more - we can only conclude two things: Snowden lied. Or Snowden didn't read his own documents, and ran with it.
lol, not to the governments he exposed, which is who would actually create the day as a holiday. He is a hero, but what does it matter? Its not like we did anything after we found out what the government was doing. They are still doing it. He didn't get anything shutdown. Its just public knowledge. Honestly they probably wanted it to leak, so that it strikes even more fear into people.
Toto u sound dumb as hell! First of all they were collecting more data on US than any of those countries combined u just named! So no he wasn’t a traitor u just a puppet 🤷🏾♀️
*If you aren't kidding:* It would be ironic if the movie was leaked because of how the movie is about Edward Snowden, a man who leaked classified information.
Premium Heck, this is extremely vital information, the NSA is disregarding the 4th amendment in the name of "counter-terrorism" and yet there hasn't been a single case where their mass collection of data has helped stop a terrorist attack! Don't you think they would display that as an example to justify their actions?
+thurston james Honeslty what do you expect? What other approach to the movie that has been done before, that would sell movie tickets, should they have taken?
the US government doesn't care about that, South Korea on the other hand... But yeah, don't install software from sources you don't trust because they have the power to do pretty much anything they want, and hacks that are designed to avoid detection from anti-cheat software generally are also not detected by anti-virus software either. Letting shady people access Ring-0 on your computer is just a bad thing waiting to happen.
***** charging 10$ to every user is a dangerous line to cross for hack makers, because as soon as it's found out that they're doing it they lose all credibility along with their user base. A more successful way to gain revenue from hack users is selling their information to other companies.
I have a lot of respect for the courage of the people who made this film happen and he actor playing Snowden. Snowden was vilified but he sacrificed his life and freedom for what he thought was right: One of the great heroes of our time, in my opinion, though, of course, still technically a traitor.
+TheH1ttm4n No he's not. Snowden and Greenwald are nothing more than controlled oppositions. They redact, and selectively edit documents prior to release. They are told what to release by their masters in so that we abide by and become use to the rouge state of espionage.
You know that's what's gonna happen though :/ Either the govt has a hand in this movie so that our collective reaction is "that's terrible! But... It could have been a lot worse. I'm glad I know the truth" in order to cover up the rest... Or... The studio would get shut down if it made a movie too real, so they're treading carefully
Parker Lee The movie is partly funded by the Rockefeller family so I wouldn't doubt that it is propaganda. THE BEST DISINFORMATION IS 90% THE TRUTH! That's how they control mass consciousness.
Thank you Edward Snowden, you are a hero to the American people. Only a traitor to the government dogs. I'm looking forward to this film, hope they don't mess it up.
"For his role as Snowden, Joseph Gordon-Levitt pledged to donate his entire salary from the film to "help facilitate the conversation" about the relationship between technology and democracy." Levitt is amazing
+Henry Lim They probably love it. Turn it into some easily digestible action packed entertainment with lots of explosions for good measure and people start mixing up the real story with the fictional and don't focus on what is really important which is the violation of everyone's privacy that has been going on for years and years.
Let's not forget Chelsea Manning who did the same thing yet didn't get away, and is currently being tortured, and now is being prosecuted for attempting suicide.
I remember one time I had been on the computer for about 4 hours writing an essay for my lit class when I looked at the camera lense and saw the webcam light on. When I looked at it, it suddenly turned off. I don't know how long it was on and I don't know who was watching me, but that was one of the scariest moments of my life. I always keep something over the lense of my laptop now.
+Dakota DallaCosta Paranoia is excessive amount of suspicion towards something or someone, Now if you have a valid reason to be suspicions it's not technically paranoia.
John Oliver already went to Russia and Interviewed snowden...Its on UA-cam...also..please look up "Edward snowden on the most shocking way the govt spies on you"...he claims yheu can actually read your mind(brain waves )with a machine.I believe him.
I am truly amazed how Gordon-Levitt managed to mimic Snowden's speech and manners. Maybe the trailer was only. composed of the scenes he was extremely good at it and his overall performance is not all of that, but this is an extremely well done job.
Greatest civil rights defender since Martin Luther King.... and the poor guy is still on the run from his own country.......and for what, pointing out his own government is breaking the law. Not for terrorism, not for theft, not for hate crime, not for murder, for the grand theft auto... yet he is chased all round the globe.USA- drop all charges and let the guy home.
if he came and knocked on my door and asked for a place to sleep in Britain even though the police were trying to arrest id still find space on my sofa for him.. man is a legend and a credit the United States. Snowden for president
If you have apple cloud anything you've ever had in storage they can see, they wouldn't look through your camera unless your on an fbi wanted list or something. These private companies sign with the government so they are granted immunization from legal consequences in the future. Also every SMS ever sent is filtered go through a flag check for keywords of interest. Anything of particular interest gets reviewed.
Edward Snowden and Chris Kyle. Two American heroes favored and hated by two different sides. One side calls Snowden a true hero that gave the American people vital and classified information which the government was knowingly hiding from them to protect their own interest while the other side calls him a traitor for doing just that. One side calls Kyle a true American hero for saving several lives of fellow soldiers during war, while the other side calls him a mass murderer for killing so many innocent Iraqi lives simply to protect his fellow soldiers on the battlefield. Even though both may have smeared or revered America's name in the world, they both didn't care what we people thought of them and did what they thought was the right thing to do. In Snowden's case, it's surprising to see just how many people might call him a "sell out" even though his courageous act gave people such knowledge they weren't even aware of, such as how their own government and tax dollars funded technology that in turn could spy on their own private lives.
+Caius Cassius The American people have known that the NSA spies on them since forever. Snowden just wanted his 15 mins of fame by selling classified information to Russian journalists. He's no hero.
American Child Umm no.. The theory that the government is spying on its own citizens has been known as a conspiracy theory for a very long time until Snowden actually gave proof to everyone- those who agreed and disagreed with the conspiracy- that this was no conspiracy. Now the government's angry because their one and only proof of staying hidden has now become public. Hence government loyalists call Snowden a sell-out or traitor, and everyone else who've now found out they were being spied on now have a reason to question all future motives of their government.
I thought the Patriot Act pretty much guaranteed spying. Which is why many were appalled by it. But the hysteria of 911 clouded judgment. No secret at all.
+Natasha T. Same here, the movie looks really good... looking forward to it! Oliver stone is like a genius at directing movies though. and the topic is really interesting and based on a true story. peace.
Wao! I totally forgot about him... I feel guilty i mean after he said What was going on to keep the people alert! I hope that he is alright where ever he is!! Thank you snowden!!!
He's undercover at putins place, working top secret together with Hitler, RasPUTIN and Bush Sr., trying to find out how to solve the mess of Merkel-Europe.
He is Russia, he got stuck in the airport for a month because US canceled his passport, but he didn't enter Russia because he didn't have a visa to enter. He was there only for a connecting flight. Watch CitizenFour for greater detail
Satellites can see through your walls and your electronic devices can be made to overheat to do things from download your data(or upload data) to seeing you in a radius around the device even when you're not holding it. Tap over your camera is meaningless. Just hope you never experience the full scope of what they can do... some of us already have, and there's no recourse short of getting rid of your electronic devices. Even chucking them doesn't stop what they can do completely.
You guys are a bit too paranoid. The NSA does indeed spy but (1) they cannot simply look through your cameras, and (2) there isn't enough manpower to watch everyone in the country even if they could. You should only worry about your security if you're doing something that might get the NSA's attention.
Do you have any sources on this? From my understanding the only wavelength we can magnify significantly from spy satellites is visible light and some infrared. Being able to "see" things around a device "in a radius" sounds like bullshit to me, frankly.
Excelent !!!
+max2082 Well if you watch interviews with Snowden he has a low monotone soft spoken voice just like Keanu Reeves. Hell Joseph is even got some of Snowden's mannerisms and body language done fairly well.
+Tonberry Queen Well he originally planned to end up in Greenland, but he got stuck in russia because the State Department canceled his passport while he was in russia. Yet the State Department calls him a traitor for going to russia(which wasnt even his intention). So in reality, the State Department is a hippo-crate. They call him a traitor for being there...yet...they wont let him leave.... LOL
In all honesty I hate how Snowden was portrayed by US media whereas everywhere else in the world the media describes him as a hero. Still find it how ironic it is for him to seek asylum under a country that doesn't have democracy.
naynay sploogle I've got Russian friends some pro-gov and others against, and being from Hong Kong I would actually know about China thank you very much. Both countries have restricted freedom is the point I'm getting across, whereas America proclaims to be 'the land of the free'.
I age with you on Snowden's treatment by US (mainstream) press, however, he was not seeking asylum in Russia. His flight to Iceland (with stopover in Russia) trapped him at the Russian airport when the US cancelled his passport. Ironically, that is possibly the best country for him to find shelter, since most others are too weak to defy US attempts to capture or kill him.
This movie doesn’t do Snowden justice He saved a whole country from being destroyed and sacrificed his life and saved women and children and so much more
JGL became one of my favourite actors after seeing him in manic. For those of you that haven't seen it, it's kinda similar to 1 flew over the cuckoos next with teenagers.
I hope they don't over-hollywood-ify this important story. This shouldn't be really about Edward Snowden the person (or the hero / the traitor), it should be about what he has done, and the things he exposed to the world.
+KleptooN Exactly...but this commercial seems to confirm both of our fears: They are trumoing him up to be some sort of playboy-James-Bond-like character. Hell...most of Hollywood is on the governments side...maybe this is meant to make him out to look like a fantasy and/or a joke...
+Jory Ferrell But it's Oliver Stone. Not exactly a pro-government stooge. On the other hand, his most famous movie is a complete fictionalization of the assassination of JFK.
***** ::Shrug:: It feels wayyyy too sarcastic to me...his portrayal doesn't feel at all correct. With a film that is meant to focus around a fight for honesty and transparency, misrepresentation of his character feels intentional and malicious to me...IDK...
Just watched this movie. Snowden was in the movie himself, so even though it was a dramatization, it still shows a somewhat accurate portrayal of his career from 2002-2013. It's a pretty long movie, but I recommend it.
+ToiletPaper He is in Russia. That is a detail that is well known and was fully covered in the news. To be clear my understanding was that his goal was not end in Russia. I believe it was a scenario he was stopping in Russia just to catch a connecting flight to somewhere else, only to land in Russia and not be allowed to get on the next plane. In short, do to series of circumstances (some out his control) Russia became the only country that could and was willing to give him political asylum.
+Bob Jimenez That would be the government admitting that they were doing something wrong. They decided to try and keep it down low and it ended up not being an important event in many ignorant Americans lives.
When exposing a crime is treated as committing a crime, you are being ruled by criminals.
When people can be found guilty or innocent based on public perceptions of right and wrong, you are living in Socialism.
right and wrong is subjective regardless of whatever system. Politics is all about public perception unless in a dictatorship.
Can we hurry this up? I have to be in bed by 10
You know what they use to call dictator's? Kings. It *is* all about perception.
Nexus Clarum The king owned the land technically. He then gave some to lords to rule in his name. Dictators are usually just murderers.

Horny Aleks
The government spies on you and collects data on you, because they have deemed you untrustworthy.

Edward Snowden was a hero. Like if you agree.
A hero, for Russia.... If all the pussies on this site fought in WWII, we would be speaking Germanese..
glorifying a traitor is like glorifying BLM.
***** Well, BLM is a legal organization that likes to protest in the United States. There is really no relationship between that and Edward Snowden, a guy that filled up a portable hard drive with secrets and fled to Russia. You should really get a better perspective on things.
+Putins Cat blm is anti american and Snowden is anti american. pretty simple.
***** Being anti-American is not a crime by itself.
Edward snowden real american hero! He is a man with big heart for justice!
He is American but what he talks about can be globalized or is ...
Can you tell me....which movies i should watch snowden or citizenfour.?
Arjit Gupta i have only watch snowden movie thats enough to see the rality:)
mustafa Alosta what are you talking about ?
I just can't get over how good Joseph's Snowden voice is!
the next LD
same
Literally it's fantastic
Yess omg so attractive lmao
He's a fabulous actor.
Edward Snowden is and was a hero, the world needs more people like him.
if snowden went to iraq and murdered women and children.. he'd be a "hero"
The world needs less bronies
*****
pity the jeremy renner drugs movie wasnt directed by oliver stone
And what? Risk my own life and my family's? No. I will keep my heads down and do as I am told by the authorities.
if he was a traitor then who did he betray? it sure as hell wasnt the people because all the info he leaked was for the people's well being. he betrayed a tyrannical government, which in my book, is a a good thing
The reason many dislike Snowden is because much of the classified data he stole (such as files on NSA's surveillance of Taliban in Pakistan) had nothing to do with "personal freedoms" and were clearly stolen just so he could use them as a bargaining chip to extract asylum demands from different nations.
information war = Alex Jones. comes to mind. koonteriskool, Your last statement is so kool, sounds about right for a top smart guy.
Snowden is a hero
Snowden is another version of Robin Hood. The government considers him a criminal, but he is actually a hero. This movie is a masterpiece.
nah.
They consider him a criminal because he is right
Hes a criminal
Hah, Robin Hood was a criminal with a reason. This man revealed that the government was lying. Not a criminal
Edward Snowden, thank you for what you did.

Agreed

Snowden is a fucking true American Hero.

+airmaildeal nah. What he did was needed.
+airmaildeal Really? How so? By telling you that your own government is spying on you and tracking your every movement? You're the traitor.
+airmaildeal if exposing the widespread disregard of the Constitution by the US government makes him a traitor then I question what country you think you live in

ONE OF THE GREATEST AMERICAN HEROES!!!

Our kids will celebrate Edward Snowden Day. This man is a HERO.
honeylove3726 we already celebrate
This can be noted on the Office of the Inspector General's 'Implementation of section 215 of the US patriot act and section 702 of the FISA amendments act of 2008'
lawfareblog.com/nsa-ig-report-reveals-new-information-section-702-collection
On page 153 for Section 215 (which was the only thing that dealt with US persons): "The BR (Business Records) order requires that providers produce to NSA certain information about telephone calls, principally those made within the US and those between the US & foreign countries. This information is limited to BR metadata, which includes information concerning telephone numbers used to make and receive calls, when the calls took place, and how long the calls lasted but doesn't not include information about the content of the calls, the names of the participants, or the cell site location information (CSLI)."
^That report was declassified around Feb of this year.
Only in September of this year, another report, declassified from the DOJ's IG for the FBI's use of section 215 from 2012-2014.
www.lawfareblog.com/doj-oig-report-use-section-215
For that, I'd skip to page 8, titled, 'The process for seeking section 215 orders'
Now, as for Snowden's documents in which support the Governments claims in these reports, nsarchive.gwu.edu/NSAEBB/NSAEBB436/docs/EBB-023.pdf
^Skip to page 15 (of the scan also as page 19 of the PDF). Through to the next page - where it defines what metadata is: "Metadata is data that describes other data, specifically information that describes the content, events or networks associated with SIGINT targets. For example, for
an email message, it would include the sender and recipient email addresses. It does not contain the subject line or the
text of the email; they are considered to be content. Likewise, for a telephone conversation, metadata would include the
called number and the calling number as well as the duration of the call."
We also know Snowden failed his annual NSA test for section 702 and 215 - he actually complained it was rigged to be too hard. The test accounted for knowledge on the privacy protection, authorisation, and several other factors that should be noted.
This claim is supported by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence's report, 'Executive summary of review of the unauthorized disclosures of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden'
www.lawfareblog.com/house-intelligence-committee-releases-snowden-report-summary
"It is also not clear Snowden understood the numerous privacy protections that govern the activities of the IC. He failed basic annual training for NSA employees on Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) and complained the training was rigged to be overly difficult. This training included explanations of the privacy protections related to the PRISM program that Snowden would later disclose."
Where else has Snowden lied? Well, to that lets look at some interviews and claims made about how he tried to warn the NSA about the legalities involved.
The biggest touting place for the claim comes from an article by VICE, 'Exclusive: Snowden Tried to Tell NSA About Surveillance Concerns, Documents Reveal'
The documents in question come from a FOIA lawsuit as noted by several experts in the legal and national security realm, as well as anyone such as myself who simply read the actual documents, well - we arrive at a totally different conclusion. They show Snowden didn't send any emails but one, which was focused on asking for clarification on a training slide, and had two additional contacts with compliance officials unrelated to raising legal or privacy concerns about NSA programs.
For a much more in-depth break down, I'd suggest reading here:
'VICE's Vice: Snowden Scoop Promises Fire, Doesn't Even Muster Smoke'
www.lawfareblog.com/vices-vice-snowden-scoop-promises-fire-doesnt-even-muster-smoke
We also have a well-documented research paper, on the issue titled ' In defense of FAA section 702: An examination of its justification, operational employment, and legal underpinnings'
Some key notes to take away from the document:
www.hoover.org/sites/default/files/research/docs/indefenseoffaasection702_inglis-kosseff.pdf
"If NSA employees fail to follow any of the detailed limitations on their ability to collect or use the Section 702 data, they are subject to a number of internal compliance positions, including the employees’ supervisors, NSA’s director of civil liberties and privacy, NSA’s general counsel, and NSA’s inspector general. And while concerns about potential abuse properly inform the diligence with which controls are designed and enforced, numerous and extensive investigations conducted by outside parties before and after the sensational claims of Edward Snowden in 2013 have yet to document a single case of abuse of Section 702 data by an individual or a systemic
abuse by the NSA. Indeed, as Geoffrey Stone, the Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago and a member of the President’s 2013 NSA Review Group, stated in an op-ed in March 2014:
_From the outset, I approached my responsibilities as a member of the Review Group with great skepticism about the NSA. To the contrary, it has put in place carefully-crafted internal procedures to ensure that it operates within the bounds of its lawful authority."_
And the conclusion:
*A complete examination of Section 702 reveals a program that is painstakingly designed* *to protect the privacy of US persons to the greatest extent possible while also* *gathering valuable intelligence for national security.* *Section 702 achieves the twin goals of the Constitution’s* *preamble: providing for the common defense and securing the blessings of liberty.* And as noted in an extensive 2013 analysis, the United States is the only nation in the world where “. . . _such surveillance is subject to review by courts presided over by_
_federal judges,_ _with appeals possible to the US Supreme Court._ _The law enforcement agencies tasked with complying with FISA_ _are required to provide regular compliance reports to the_ _Congressional committees with responsibility over national security.”_ Given the Constitution’s mandate for limited but effective government, this burden is both appropriate and well imposed. For that reason, Congress should*
*reauthorize Section 702 without any significant amendments."
So, after all of this, and more - we can only conclude two things: Snowden lied. Or Snowden didn't read his own documents, and ran with it.
I make sure to have my camera always facing me whenever I jerkoff
lol, not to the governments he exposed, which is who would actually create the day as a holiday. He is a hero, but what does it matter? Its not like we did anything after we found out what the government was doing. They are still doing it. He didn't get anything shutdown. Its just public knowledge. Honestly they probably wanted it to leak, so that it strikes even more fear into people.
disliked by 4000 agents of big brother.

seemed like a good suspenseful movie,I can't see why all the dislikes...nothing better to do???

Russia is saving Snowden while CIA is plotting against him. HOPE this man LIVES.
Nope Russia is saving Edward so that they can get access to NSA and CIA secrets... its all business buddy
@Trips do you have evidence for these claims?
@@malabikadasmedhi3891 And how do you propose they do that? Allegedly, Edward deleted the files after consulting with the Guardian journalists.
No harm is going to come to him
@@JesoTV I've supplied plenty of evidence proving how they spy from phone to TV..every aspect of your life. And if they need some more let me know
The movie should be leaked online before it gets released in theaters.
i dont get it
*If you aren't kidding:*
It would be ironic if the movie was leaked because of how the movie is about Edward Snowden, a man who leaked classified information.
The movie should watch you.
Sage Hawk u dumbass tho. nsa documents didnt go to the movies
Cock Corp I didn't make that claim...
If you don't know what "Leak online" means, you shouldn't be assuming what it means.
This guy could have been the head of the CIA or NSA and yet he sacrificed his own personal future to reveal the truth.
so your good with them spying on us?
He never said that
+James Rankins he was saying it as in snowden did a good thing
hes a hero
Premium Heck, this is extremely vital information, the NSA is disregarding the 4th amendment in the name of "counter-terrorism" and yet there hasn't been a single case where their mass collection of data has helped stop a terrorist attack! Don't you think they would display that as an example to justify their actions?
I love Snowden and his story, but this trailer and this movie makes me want to bash my head against a wall.
Why?
+thurston james -- I think this movie looks awesome.
+thurston james Honeslty what do you expect? What other approach to the movie that has been done before, that would sell movie tickets, should they have taken?
+PresidentOfSpace it seems like Oliver Stone is the only director who can make these expose the US gov't flicks.
+PresidentOfSpace Screenwriters with imagination aren't paid well in Hollywood. Hence, the remakes.
After watching this i will never use a hack in CSGO
the US government doesn't care about that, South Korea on the other hand...

I wonder how much of this film, either has or will, get censored before it's theatrical release?
A Great deal I'm sure as the CIA works amazingly well with many actors and Hollywood plus you know that NSA & CIA are best buds
well..both are US
AND ??
and what?
You can't censor! That's illegal....oh wait...
I have a lot of respect for the courage of the people who made this film happen and he actor playing Snowden. Snowden was vilified but he sacrificed his life and freedom for what he thought was right: One of the great heroes of our time, in my opinion, though, of course, still technically a traitor.
Trader of his employer or of the people?
Snowden, a true human being, an absolute legend who served the people of the world. I need to watch this as well as Citizenfour.
Fingers crossed they don't mess this up and sacrifice truth for entertainment.
+TheH1ttm4n No he's not. Snowden and Greenwald are nothing more than controlled
oppositions. They redact, and selectively edit documents prior to
release. They are told what to release by their masters in so that we
abide by and become use to the rouge state of espionage.
You know that's what's gonna happen though :/
Either the govt has a hand in this movie so that our collective reaction is "that's terrible! But... It could have been a lot worse. I'm glad I know the truth" in order to cover up the rest... Or... The studio would get shut down if it made a movie too real, so they're treading carefully
Parker Lee
The movie is partly funded by the Rockefeller family so I wouldn't doubt that it is propaganda. THE BEST DISINFORMATION IS 90% THE TRUTH! That's how they control mass consciousness.
+mrandmrscrooked 👍🏼
It's made by Oliver Stone, of course it's going to be messed with.

I think through the sheer number of movies he's made there are going to be good movies and bad. My favorite Nicholas Cage movie is, "Lord Of War".
Rumblefish was maybe his first, he was maybe good in that. I wouldn't agree on the numbers game to be honest. Look at Adam Sandler, another sell out.

Turn it into some easily digestible action packed entertainment with lots of explosions for good measure and people start mixing up the real story with the fictional and don't focus on what is really important which is the violation of everyone's privacy that has been going on for years and years.

John Oliver already went to Russia and Interviewed snowden...Its on UA-cam...also..please look up "Edward snowden on the most shocking way the govt spies on you"...he claims yheu can actually read your mind(brain waves )with a machine.I believe him.
I know that! I want him to do a follow up on it!
What if we weren't supposed to watch this and we all get shot by the government afterwards.
lol
Oh no I know too much. They're going to lock me up.
*its was at this moment that they all knew,
* they fucked up.
+Jean-Paul Northcutt in America that is a high possibility
+SASN NETWORK SSND your an idiot
I am truly amazed how Gordon-Levitt managed to mimic Snowden's speech and manners. Maybe the trailer was only. composed of the scenes he was extremely good at it and his overall performance is not all of that, but this is an extremely well done job.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt absolutely mastered Snowden's voice- the low bravato, the awkward mannerisms-really impressive work
Greatest civil rights defender since Martin Luther King.... and the poor guy is still on the run from his own country.......and for what, pointing out his own government is breaking the law. Not for terrorism, not for theft, not for hate crime, not for murder, for the grand theft auto... yet he is chased all round the globe.USA- drop all charges and let the guy home.
👍
the establishment would love to have his head
Edward Snowden for president
if he came and knocked on my door and asked for a place to sleep in Britain even though the police were trying to arrest id still find space on my sofa for him.. man is a legend and a credit the United States. Snowden for president
What exactly did he do? Sorry, don't know much about him.
Can the NSA see me through my iPad camera?
Yes they can and they are doing it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRISM_(surveillance_program)
I hate to break it to you, but they probably can see what's inside your phone as well.
*iPad
Oh shit they know im fapping
If you have apple cloud anything you've ever had in storage they can see, they wouldn't look through your camera unless your on an fbi wanted list or something. These private companies sign with the government so they are granted immunization from legal consequences in the future.
Also every SMS ever sent is filtered go through a flag check for keywords of interest. Anything of particular interest gets reviewed.
That moment when you see "based on true events" and think of your phone :D
In Snowden's case, it's surprising to see just how many people might call him a "sell out" even though his courageous act gave people such knowledge they weren't even aware of, such as how their own government and tax dollars funded technology that in turn could spy on their own private lives.
except that chris kyle enjoyed killing civilians..and quoted in his book that he will go back whenever he gets a chance...thankfully hes dead
+Anders Tønder He sold that info to Russians. He's not a hero, he just wanted to be seen as one.
I thought the Patriot Act pretty much guaranteed spying. Which is why many were appalled by it. But the hysteria of 911 clouded judgment. No secret at all.
One of the few ads I've watched fully. Looks like an amazing movie.
seriously. I was about to skip. Glad I didn't!
Same here, this is probably the only ad/trailer I didn't skip even though I had the choice to lol
+Edwin Velasquez good for you... smh like who gives a fuck
+Natasha T. Same here, the movie looks really good... looking forward to it! Oliver stone is like a genius at directing movies though. and the topic is really interesting and based on a true story. peace.
FREE SNOWDEN
He is free though...
he's most certainly not free that's why he has to hide in another country.
Santorini Arrezzi if he was free why ain't he chilln in the USA?
He is in the U.S. He lives in Hawaii now.
lmao xD, and now it's gonna be United Trumpty :3
One of the most underrated films ever!
Wao! I totally forgot about him... I feel guilty i mean after he said What was going on to keep the people alert! I hope that he is alright where ever he is!! Thank you snowden!!!
He's under FSB and Putin protection itself, try to get him now.
Ray Wei
He have Russian pasport, and live somthere in Moscow, under interior government agency protection.
олег бурдин oh
I just tapped my computer camera :/
Satellites can see through your walls and your electronic devices can be made to overheat to do things from download your data(or upload data) to seeing you in a radius around the device even when you're not holding it. Tap over your camera is meaningless. Just hope you never experience the full scope of what they can do... some of us already have, and there's no recourse short of getting rid of your electronic devices. Even chucking them doesn't stop what they can do completely.
+LexDomino What if I live like a groundhog?
Join the alliance man👍🏾. I taped my computer camera ages ago. #TrustNoOne👀🏃🏽
Edward Snowden is an amazingly brave American, but I;m scared for this movie
yup
+ncball Why?
You think it's right to spy on people?? No!
+Daniel yes! It's government security! Don't do anything illegal and they ignore you
+Robert Strickland sheep
Excelent !!!
0:45 ;-D holy fuck, didn't see that face coming.
+Lukas T Right! or Timothy Oliphant. i think thats how you spell it.
+ShredyzGaming IT'S NICHOLAS CAGE!!! ten tenen ten ten ten!
+Lukas T lmfao
+Lukas T wait till he loses his mind again
This actually looks pretty good. Despite what the government thinks of him, I see him as a hero.
The guy who plays Snowden's impression of Snowden is really good
Who else tapes their webcam?
Even Mark Zuckerberg does that.
I’ve been doing that for more than 6 years now.
@@amayliar21 I have a webcam shutter built into my laptop. It's pretty handy.
I can see u now
what about the audio? they can also hear you
Is it just me or is Joseph Gordon-Levitt doing a voice that makes him sound like Keanu Reeves? Either way looks good.
+max2082 He is kinda.
+max2082 He sounds like the real Snowden.
+PaulBeen yea he sounded pretty monotone like Snowden I mean he is a hero and all I just hate his voice.
+max2082
Well if you watch interviews with Snowden he has a low monotone soft spoken voice just like Keanu Reeves. Hell Joseph is even got some of Snowden's mannerisms and body language done fairly well.
That wasn't Keanu Reeves? jk.
wow he really nailed snowden's voice
+deeshmond Home run!
+deeshmond
indeed he has
+deeshmond actually, i was going to say.. I find it distracting. I'd rather Joe Gordon levitt just use his natural voice and focus on the acting more.
SHAILENE WOODLEY🙌❤
yesss 😍😍
+Borne Eko he's also a very good actor☺
😍😍😍❤❤
Shailene Woodley 😍🙌❤ see you on Sept 😅 haha
💗
Can I upload it on my social media?
SPOILER ALERT: The government never catches Snowden, he gains asylum in Russia.
A little birdie told me. ^^
LOL
+MegaTRT hippo crate
i like hippos
hippos are the best crates of all :)
Hyppocrite
Well he nailed his voice
+fuyukidenka That's the first thing I noticed.
No, he nailed his girlfriend.
In all honesty I hate how Snowden was portrayed by US media whereas everywhere else in the world the media describes him as a hero. Still find it how ironic it is for him to seek asylum under a country that doesn't have democracy.
Russia has democracy, I don't understand why kind of other democracy you want.
Dude russias great they are nothing like they used to be since collapsing, you're thinking of china
naynay sploogle I've got Russian friends some pro-gov and others against, and being from Hong Kong I would actually know about China thank you very much.
Democracy is history... the US is a Republic
This movie doesn’t do Snowden justice
He saved a whole country from being destroyed and sacrificed his life and saved women and children and so much more
Nicolas cage talking about the internet hahahahahaha
You don't say?
+Omar Like always, I stopped at the comments section before watching the trailer, and was I justified or what?! LOL
2:39 Long trailer that reveals the coolest parts in the movie? It feels like I watched the whole movie.
+DarGadgetZ since everyone already knows the story and even more
After Leo, Joseph is my second favorite actor and this shit looks good
+DREDAYZ Yeah, Joseph is gold.
I hope they bring up Bitcoin at some point
JGL became one of my favourite actors after seeing him in manic. For those of you that haven't seen it, it's kinda similar to 1 flew over the cuckoos next with teenagers.
+Alberts stuff I still have to see that
This definitely looks good I'll go see it opening night
Imagine being an NSA agent watching this movie and being like "I am the one he is getting chased by :)".
Oh so that’s how he got away, I always wondered ☺️ “nsa agent chasing him
Please don't suck.
Bruh Olive Stone is one of the best directors out there. Check out JFK movie and you will see.
That was probably the last good Oliver Stone movie.
Nicholas Cage is in it but... If they got Nicholas Cage then i guess its a Nicholas Cage movie.... And we all know how Nicholas Cage movies are.
It's overly dramatized to convey an already very compelling story. It's going to suck ass.
+Adam yeah leaving Las Vegas and adaptation and raising Arizona were so bad
I hope they don't over-hollywood-ify this important story.
This shouldn't be really about Edward Snowden the person (or the hero / the traitor), it should be about what he has done, and the things he exposed to the world.
+KleptooN Did you see this trailer? About the only fact that is 100% true is the fact that it is called Snowden.
+KleptooN Exactly...but this commercial seems to confirm both of our fears:
They are trumoing him up to be some sort of playboy-James-Bond-like character.
Just watch CitizenFour
*****
::Shrug:: It feels wayyyy too sarcastic to me...his portrayal doesn't feel at all correct. With a film that is meant to focus around a fight for honesty and transparency, misrepresentation of his character feels intentional and malicious to me...IDK...
They already made a movie about Edward Snowden, it's called 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier'
Not only an excellent movie, but it's also very very informative for people who have no idea...............
Just watched this movie. Snowden was in the movie himself, so even though it was a dramatization, it still shows a somewhat accurate portrayal of his career from 2002-2013. It's a pretty long movie, but I recommend it.
18 dislikes? NSA's early.
Can't wait for this to come out!!!
I feel like they over dramatized this. Snowden is probably in hiding right now munching off to potato chips and binge watching friends
+netwolfe but why wouldnt the government just kill him
+Bob Jimenez That would be the government admitting that they were doing something wrong. They decided to try and keep it down low and it ended up not being an important event in many ignorant Americans lives.
+mralpha543 but why not just fake a suicide too many questions also why aren't the kgb torturing him
True
Who came here after the joe Rogan podcast
Alee. His book is really good man. Check it out
