My surf ski paddling coach makes us something similar where we take 5 breaths, then empty our lungs. Then we paddle hard for 5 doubles. Then we should be wanting air (sometimes desperately when we are not good at this). If we found it easy (at first), most times we cheated by taking a cheat breath somewhere. Unfortunately we can’t cheat in the ocean when you are under your surf ski. Or after been wiped out, tumbling around trying to work out where is up??? (Or thinking where is my board??) First but hardest instinct is to relax. Breath training is underrated but essential when something happens.

For the bad experience part, yeah i had some bad experiences but i think the worst one was when I was going over the falls for the first time, its so crazy when you are used to hold downs but you ultimately get a hold down wich is three times as long as you are used to, now i kind of enjoy the ride most of the time but when it first happened i thought about quitting surfing for real 😅🏄🤙🌊

I noticed when I'm paddling out, I would start to get light-headed from holding my breath so many times to duck dive and then unable to take as deep breath with my heart pumping fast while laying on my stomach and chest becomes a nightmare. Surfer conditioning is a whole different animal than just doing land cardio.

It's an endurance sport where you're FORCED to hold your breath over and over! Nothing else like it. I've been spending a decade trying to make surf specific breath training! Let me know if this helps you!

I’ve been surfing for 20 years and I never thought how important is right breathing and I held my breathing after a deep inhale. It turns out I’ve done it totally incorrectly. Thanks for the lesson I am gonna be practicing it your way! Integrating the training to the ocean, should I exhale every time before I hold my breath?
