Weirdly enough, my number one thing when I was initially getting a DAP last year was that it _didn't_ run Android. I wanted a simple, single-use device that could deliver high quality playback. The whole point was to have fewer distractions when listening to my music, not simply migrating the same ones over to a different device.
But Android DAPs by default don't have the distractions of an Android phone. As much as "you can install anything from the Play store" gets brought up, in practice you just install your preferred streaming service or offline music player and maybe a tool to sync your collection and that's all you run. Sure you *can* go out of your way to install email or social media or whatever distractions but people should keep their eye on the prize and not forget why they bought the thing.
@@SaveMeAzathoth I'd rather just have a simple player that I can drag & drop files into without having to deal with extra nonsense while also avoiding the temptation of putting UA-cam, games, etc. on there when I just want a dedicated music playback device.
@@alertArchitect Don't get me wrong, I think that people with large music collections can get a lot of value from non-Android DAPs. The "this is sufficient, why pay more for more than I want?" factor is sufficient reason though without imagining temptations of Android that don't actually exist in practice. Android-based DAPs are generally sufficiently bad fit for running UA-cam or games that anyone worried about their lack of willpower is just going to give in to the temptation to pick up their smartphone long before they seriously consider having those apps on their music player.
@@SaveMeAzathoth I'm not "imagining temptations." I'm literally describing the biggest distractions I deal with on my phone on a daily basis thanks to my ADHD, which I specifically wanted to _avoid_ when getting a DAP so I could use it to focus on the music I love. I'm sure there are plenty of other neurodivergent people who agree with me that the temptation of being able to put those major distractions, such as UA-cam or small games, onto a device meant to be just for music is enough to justify avoiding Android entirely when purpose-buying a product for music playback. Also, as I said in my last comment, the bigger consideration was being able to simply drag-and-drop my music files and easily play them without needing an app - which you seemingly chose to ignore in favor of ridiculing the idea of apps _literally designed_ to entice you into doomscrolling with easy dopamine hits (something that especially traps ADHD folks like myself) being distracting temptations someone may want to eliminate entirely.
@@alertArchitect I didn't ignore that bigger consideration; I attempted to acknowledge it as good and sufficient before moving to what I disagreed with. I'm sorry that I messed up my choice of words there and muddied my intent. We are talking about devices that compared to your phone are not-always-on, not-always-connected, have mediocre screens, old processors, low ram, cramped storage already spoken for by the music collection, and (at least in some cases) painfully noticeable lag between audio and video. That's all friction against being used for things other than music. The second line of defence against those apps breaking through your intent to not install them in the first place is them not functioning as designed to generate dopamine and getting uninstalled in disgust. But maybe my imagination doesn't go far enough to understand the people who whom that still isn't enough and your experience is beyond me.
Plus you own your music. Phone have taken so much hdd space unless your willing to pay for the 1tb phone which will be way over priced They would make you use a streaming service to then pay another monthly bill and even then you don't get the music you want.. sadly this is needed.
iPod 7 with 16/44 ALAC or better 16/48 AIFF files - connected to a Wadia 170i giving the unmoleted signal digitaly out by S/PDIF to a DAC. An iPod 5.5 with a 3,5 to Chinch cable running into an amp does sound pretty good too - the less perfect sounding even more minimalist variant.

You really need to understand that DAPs are very successful espcially in Asia. There are quiet a few making them and the quality is excellent compared to phones which are a compromise all around. They support HiRes audio and given they only play music all the money is spent on quality components for that purpose. They arent a novelty as you say.
I'm fully aware of their success in Asia, but that doesn't make them any less a novelty or niche like a CD player, vinyl or cassette. It's a device you use for a specific use case, where the mainstream will always gravitate towards phones as a general use device regardless of whether you're an American or are in China, Japan etc... There's a reason why stores like e-earphone are considered specialty, and why phones/BT headphones are on the first floor of Yodobashi Camera
I might have to look for one, I used to use my ipod touch, but something about the headphone jack is unhappy (maybe its the fact that its the second gen touch but yknow)
Personally... I would suggest to get an older LG phone, anything from the V30 and G7 and newer would be perfect for music not to mention its a decent backup camera for both video and photo.
Bro if you don't want to spend 200 dollars for something that shouldn’t be this much. Get a prepaid phone, they work perfectly fine and you don't have to have the worry of the $200 mp3 player running too slow. Prepaid phones go for like 30-70 bucks.
Neat for the buttons, everything else my Xperia does. If I am paying for a phone I expect it to have a headphone jack and slot for a micro sd. It is a little sad to see that Sony seems to be one of the last ones to understand it.
"And it even runs Android" That's the problem I have with most modern DAPs. They all run on Android with power hungry CPUs, so they don't last as long and take longer to charge. I want a DAp that I can play music on, hit pause, throw it in my bag and not worry about it for 8 hours and then hit play and almost immediatly continue where I left off with no battery wasted. That's what I love about my iPod.
I think it's a hybrid issue - people are sick and tired of having a billion subscription services, and don't want to drain their phone's battery to listen to music.
I like the idea of single-purpose devices like these on an ideological level. Phones have melted our brains. It does everything, and has every feature, but does it poorly.

Am I the only one who still listens CD walkman everyday in bedtime
Plus you own your music.
Phone have taken so much hdd space unless your willing to pay for the 1tb phone which will be way over priced
They would make you use a streaming service to then pay another monthly bill and even then you don't get the music you want.. sadly this is needed.
Or you just get a budget phone and pirate the music?🤷🏽♂️
Using a spare iPhone 5 as my dedicated music player
iPod 7 with 16/44 ALAC or better 16/48 AIFF files - connected to a Wadia 170i giving the unmoleted signal digitaly out by S/PDIF to a DAC.
An iPod 5.5 with a 3,5 to Chinch cable running into an amp does sound pretty good too - the less perfect sounding even more minimalist variant.
I use my old phone from 2013 as my mp3 player
i'm going back into a dedicated music player right now. this is connected to wifi though...still too connected for me. looks cool though.
Not mentioning the supported formats is superlame
I’ll love to go back to an iPod video but I don’t want to deal with wired earphones anymore
I Repurposed my S10 Plus 1TB + 512GB MicroSD as my personal Jukebox. Because I basically only listened upto 1 hour, this setup is PERFECT as I also have just replaced it's Battery
I still also have my s10+ with its original battery, though the poor man’s version with 128 gig. Might also buy a 512 and use it for music only 😁
@@Leo1991 you can the slower speeds sandisks or samsung for a cheaper price. They lasts well over 7 years. Music storage does not require higzhspeeds so even the 1TB cards should be worth your while
How easy is it to refurbish an iPod for someone without tech refurbishing experience? The yellow iPod looks sooo good

Are those CD900ST? If so, slap on some Yaxi StPad2
Dude! This looks so cool. I love the idea of it, but I couldn’t get rid of my phone. Even though I want to go back to a flip phone.
I might have to look for one, I used to use my ipod touch, but something about the headphone jack is unhappy
(maybe its the fact that its the second gen touch but yknow)
Running Android turns me off, I just want a dedicated offline music player that can play my backed up physical media.
super highend of these made my eyes pop out
These devices should have generic os for better longevity and not feel outdated
If honestly like seeing a full video on this like the Sony one from a while back
ALL NIGHT RADIO 🗣️🔥
Yo lo tengo y se escuche de lujo, completamente recomendable
ALL NIGHT RADIO SPOTTED

If you said it was a modern tape reader, I would of believed you.
Just curious is better than iPod 5.5 just for sound quality? What is your thought?
Ayo the top left at the cd part
Listening to miku on every device challenge
Ado's All Night Radio spotted! Good taste
if they just add a sim card slot, and it will me my next phone
Neat for the buttons, everything else my Xperia does. If I am paying for a phone I expect it to have a headphone jack and slot for a micro sd. It is a little sad to see that Sony seems to be one of the last ones to understand it.
A Hatsune Miku fan? Hell yes.
Can we get a head to head comparison with the Walkman player?
So does this need to be continuously updated??? I want something that does NOT need updating like ever!??? Suggestions please? 👍
Lotoo Paw 6000.
Bro here worried about explaining portable hifi while I'm over here playing with a mini disc player.
I like the idea of single-purpose devices like these on an ideological level. Phones have melted our brains. It does everything, and has every feature, but does it poorly.
Let me know what you think. Thats concept. Even the older days its hard to find that.
Sorry for the ignorance but, is the yellow Ipod Classic a 5gen?¿ Thanks!
you can't deceive us Alvin Leung
Have you tried moondrop phone I think you will like it 😊
The moondrop miad needs a review~
I love Suisei
