List of things smartphone manufacturers shall do: provide microSD storage, provide replaceable battery, provide connectivity port for wired headphone, provide root access for advanced user without the need to turn the firmware inside out
> provide root access Objectively wrong, that's an insecure and sloppy way of doing things for pretend power users. The correct manner is to build your own Android forks with whatever modifications you want solidified into it, and manufacturers must provide support for you doing that by allowing you to unlock and *re-lock* your bootloader and a lot of other utterly basic small things they don't do. This way you could have your custom Android OS while preserving security unless you do insane modifications to your fork like enabling root access.
- microSD storage Pretty much all modern phones come with at least 128GB of internal storage and a lot offer 256GB, 512GB or more, even low- or mid-range models. In the age of streaming and cloud storage, why on earth would you need to carry around and/or have direct access to more data than that? On the rare ocasions you actually do, like on a long haul flight, just get an USB-C stick! - replacable battery I take it you mean user-replacable batteries. For that you would need to impelent some sort of opening mechanism, cover the internal electronics and encase the battery - all of that would either make the phone larger or the battery smaller and either way, make the whole thing more expensive to produce. You also can kiss wireless charging goodbye! - port for wired headphones That's called USB-C with Audio Adapter Accessory Mode which provides an analog output/input (mic) to an internal DAC and provides the same functionality as the 3.5mm jack but at a smaller footprint and with more functionality. - root access That's a huuuuuuuuge security risk! You're basically begging hackers to brick your phone in a ransomare attack or to turn it into a bot - don't even think about it!
I hate the idea of removing the audio jack and memory slots, it's ofcourse a business strategy but it's complete nonsense at the same time. Why can't they just keep things simple? to make things more techy they literally removed essential stuff
If im going to be honest i think those werent bad decisions, u could get usb c earbuds and phones already come with enough storage (not to mention nobody uses them and majority of phones today still have sd card slots)
@@zeenxdownz I partially agree with you, but I meant the idea of removing audio jack and memory card slots is kinda absurd. I mean imagine you stored your favourite songs, photos and videos in a memory card and now that you need to buy a new phone you realize that it has no slots for your memory card, like yeah you can transfer it or whatever but that's just makes it difficult if you know what I mean. Yeah, today we do have phones with those features but soon we won't and I feel it's really unnecessary. Why can't keep those things and improve processor and design more? or maybe, I'm just an old soul and like simple things more lol.
Old stuff only seems better because you forget the bad old stuff and remember the good ones. In 10 years people will look back on smartphones of this era, only remember the good ones, and talk about how good they were compared to the ones they have in the future
I agree to some extent, these old phones had worse battery life even when they were new because the battery size was simply not big and the efficiency was worse
By getting rid of extra features companies reduce the production cost and say it's for the environment, in the end, we as consumers suffer the downgrade of phones. I really miss when I didn't need to look after a phone like a baby and just use it without worrying if it'd break, or of if the battery would last. @@jordanrayo2425 bruh, I'm not saying Sony is perfect. In fact, if anything, it's a love/hate relationship (almost like some irl cases). However, it's the full set that makes it special: like you said, top of the line CPU/GPU along with all the specs possible: 4k screen, headphone jack, sd card slot, big battery, manual camera controls, and the list goes on while having a solid stock Android ROM. It is indeed very expensive, and they're so stubborn for not shipping the big sensors that they make, and they support the devices for 2/3 years (although updates are monthly and right on schedule). But there aren't any real flaws or lack of features, the cons you have on other devices are usually from personal preference like pic/video processing, fav skin, AI features, etc. So, I'd rather rock Sony all day, no bs or services attached to them, and you actually feel like the owner of a product.
If a spoon serves its purpose, you don't discard it in the name of 'courage'. And we still use spoons. The same didn't happen with the headphone jack, or removable storage, or battery. Wow I was just looking at my HTC One M7 the other day. It's so aesthetically pleasing. The front facing speakers were giant, loud, high quality, and exactly symmetrical. The bezels were large but also served a purpose. When the M8 came out and shrunk the top speaker, I knew where things were headed... Now every phone claims "stereo" speakers but they are horribly unbalanced and use software to try and fix it, but it's not the same. they all look the same cause its the final perfect design, the design perfectly mirrors a widescreen computer monitor which is perfect for web browsing, video watching, photos viewing and reading there isnt any other design that can improve that
Some say it's nostalgia and I wish it was but it's not really. Newer phones are Harder to repair Harder to Replace Break Easier Remove features we liked Removed headphone jack Removed expandable storage Removing physical sim Removing accessories from the box for "environmental reasons" then proceed to sell them to you in separately in a separate box for a *seperate* price Price getting higher Ecosystems becoming more closed in Ability to modify software is going down More bloatware Harder to replace battery This isn't to say that phones haven't gotten better we have better ui, better software support, more apps, better batteries, better cameras, better screens, and many cool new features. But there are many things that companies have taken away from us for no good reasons. It comes down to companies changing things to be more profitable. Companies such as LG who tried to be different and give something good to their customers just couldn't compete with some of the bigger players, so sadly LG has departed from the smartphone market. LG Mobile, you will be remembered 🥲 At the end of the day thats just how business works, but that isn't to say it's entirely good or bad. Once apple stopped putting a charger in the box, and giving customers less for more money; other companies followed suit, because unfortunately Apple is the trend setter. Apple killed innovation in the smartphone market.

Better: - Display - More powerfull hardware - Larger size - Battery life - Operating Sytem Worse: - Artifically enhanced images - SD Card slot removed - Audio jack removed - No replacable battery - No charger with the phone Most of the things that evolved for the worse did so just because of greed.
My take on the iPhone 7 that have no headphone jack trend was to introduce the Airpods to the public. It was a game changer in wireless that were clumsy. But they create a problem that didn't exist, and creating A LOT of e-waste, a dualism of Apple that they were tree hugging company or environmentally friendly But iPod Nanos are super thin than a iPhone but have a headphone jack. But Android companies suck nowdays, they choose to follow Apple trend. Now im dealing buying USB-C DACs to drive my mid range wired IEMs. They broke 2 to 3 yrs in my normal usage then change again, even they have a silver cable into it and drive mid to high end in phone with no issue. LG used to introduce Quad DAC. Samsung in S10 series have headphone jack and SD card but Samsung nowdays choose to licking Apple nuts because Apple is a trend setter and every people wants a iPhone Android clone design, removing a charger? Apple did it first. Apple tend to be a electronics company but now in my opinion, Apple is a marketing company now where people buy products because it's a luxury symbol. And have a solid cult buying iPhone, audience that they sell iPhones tend to follow Kim Kardashian 😂 My balance take of this that we hit the peak of smartphone trend, it's sad to say that even SD card support they remove it (because it was slower than the internal storage UFS) headphones jack remove but sell wireless earphones because the average consumer wants it too. Removable battery didn't care as much because they tend to have more space than non removable one, the balance approach here is to be reparable friendly
This is spot on. Unfortunately, there aren't any good 3.5mm jacks with good dacks on phones anymore. The best you'll find is in the Xperias, but even those are the generic Qualcomm dacks, so...
You guys really need to stop romanticizing old phones. As someone that misses features we used to have like rear fingerprint readers and can´t stand in display readers or side mounted alongside the power button I have to accept phones today are built better, have better connectivity, are faster, have better cameras, are better for emulation, the ui look better. We have essentially what we pay for.
I’m going to have to disagree with you there. I still use old phones on the daily and although I miss out on some new features I’m not too disappointed about it. Better screen? Sure. Better battery? Sure. Faster? Sure. AI? Sure However just how important are these features? I use the iPhone SE first gen and the iPhone 5 quite often and it’s not that big of a deal. Having a smaller battery just makes me more mindful of my usage and hell reduces my screen time. Photos? I’m no professional photographer. The iPhone 5 and SE cameras are still totally adequate for today’s use cases. They’re not great but they’re not bad by any means. Plus, with the build quality of these old phones made from full aluminum or plastic I don’t have to baby them and they actually fit in my pocket since older phones tend to be smaller. Repairability is also huge. I’ve fixed my old phones and replaced the battery myself more than I can count. Nowadays I can’t even imagine trying to repair these glass slabs with industrial glue holding it in place. I won’t be able to easily repair them if anything goes wrong and that will affect the longevity of how I can use it for. Im also not kidding when I say I still use the original iPhone 2g. It’s not better at all but sometimes it’s nice to step back and just have no distractions but still have a phone. Ergonomically speaking the 2g is the most comfortable phone I’ve ever held and the older Samsungs with the curved plastic bodies are a close second, compare that with these new phones and it’s night and day.
my last few phones have had a multicolor led charge indicator on the top edge of the screen/frame that is only used during phone-off charging. this is something i loved in blackberry days to identify who or what service a message was coming from without having any interaction with the screen. i would love to customize this to 'tethered connection with transcoding' status link and perhaps some sort of message notifications. i remember when the moto razr v3 seem editor tool leaked and you could customize EVERY aspect of the device- logos, sounds, splash screens, carrier locks, volume limits and more. im not asking granular access on an android device, but if the feature is there (and i swear it was part of the worldwide product launch) i want to customize it.
7:39 me with my Iphone 12 pro hearing him say "I know the 13 pro is an older phone". This phone still feels new, Apple's consumer base is insane when you think about it

I remembered getting my first phone in 15 by robbing some classmate's locker & getting it. Back then all you had to do was hold down the power button and down volume button to reset & delete all personal files and data. Lord brings back so many shiπy memories.

Lol. This guy seriously thinks that phones a decade ago were unique, when they were all still about same, just a rectangle with a large screen. You would have to be further back to the pre iphone/android era of nokia and motorola, then palm and pocket pc on the high end. That was the last time when unique devices were made, with unique OS too(There's only two choices since the rise of the "smart-dumb" smartphones and they are same. On the surface level android copied the iOS ui, so it feels exactly same for every non savvy user) Btw the answer to this video is: NO Removable battery, the micro sd card slot and the headphone jack: They don't matter in era of 512gb internal storage, a battery that easily lasts the entire day and the far superior, inexpensive, yet super convenient true wireless bt ear buds These old devices were also thick and ugly, no screen bezels is what was the obvious upgrade. So no, having bezels and buttons wasn't better because these few physical buttons weren't useful for games anyway, like they were on a pocket pc or palm for example.
It’s not that they were better it’s just that there was more room for innovation. Now there isn’t. I mean what else can you do to a phone? They already have the best screens, big screens, the best processors, enough storage, enough ram, excellent cameras. There is nothing else that can be done to a phone to make it better like before.
My very first phone back in 2015 was a ZTE budget smartphone running on Android KitKat. After 1 year, I switched to the iPhones. I currently have an iPhone 13 which I upgraded to after owning the SE, 8, and XR. Since after upgrading to iPhone 8, I got myself a headphone jack adapter and wireless iPhone charger. Since after upgrading to the XR, I was able to adjust to the 19.5:9 aspect ratio of smartphone screen.
With the headphone jack, I can understand from a demand and supply standpoint why phones leave them out. If omitting the jack means that the phone is easier to make, then to a degree it's fine as long as theres a substitute available. And bluetooth buds arent the only ones you can get; wired USB C ones can be bought from any store that has electronics
Also, with the SD cards, I feel like making a smaller sized format than the Micro SD would've been a viable solution, but companies would rather sell you cloud storage than that unfortunately
ngl phones back then were like a part of yourself. a way to express your personality I miss the time when striking colors, odd shapes, and unconventional UIs were the norm. nowadays phones are the same neutral color or mute color glass bricks . So I play a game called Zenless Zone Zero, and the characters all have phones linked to their personalities. For example, the energetic protagonist has a striking orange phone, or a policewoman has a blue-white sliding nokia express music like phone, the rich outlaw girl has a cracked blackberry passport or a sassy girl with a sanyo keitai phone covered in stikers.

My phone is ridiculously fat compared to Samsung S8 and has a weird shape. Seems nobody cares about the form factor anymore. Clunky phones are here and people arent even complaining about them
My "favorite" part about modern smartphones is how they made them hard to repair in order to make them waterproof. And I don't really get why most people would need that, most of them were already water resist which was enough. And when I actually tried my iPhone 8 underwater it didn't recognize it's SIM card the day after because water got in. List of things smartphone manufacturers shall do:
provide microSD storage,
provide replaceable battery,
provide connectivity port for wired headphone,
provide root access for advanced user without the need to turn the firmware inside out
you forgot to tell them to PROVIDE A FRIGGIN HEADPHONE JACK I STILL USE AN IPHONE 6S FOR THE HEADPHONE JACK
@@jaydenthomas820"provide connectivity port for wired headphone"
> provide root access
Objectively wrong, that's an insecure and sloppy way of doing things for pretend power users.
- microSD storage
Pretty much all modern phones come with at least 128GB of internal storage and a lot offer 256GB, 512GB or more, even low- or mid-range models. In the age of streaming and cloud storage, why on earth would you need to carry around and/or have direct access to more data than that? On the rare ocasions you actually do, like on a long haul flight, just get an USB-C stick!
- replacable battery
I take it you mean user-replacable batteries. For that you would need to impelent some sort of opening mechanism, cover the internal electronics and encase the battery - all of that would either make the phone larger or the battery smaller and either way, make the whole thing more expensive to produce. You also can kiss wireless charging goodbye!
- port for wired headphones
That's called USB-C with Audio Adapter Accessory Mode which provides an analog output/input (mic) to an internal DAC and provides the same functionality as the 3.5mm jack but at a smaller footprint and with more functionality.
- root access
That's a huuuuuuuuge security risk! You're basically begging hackers to brick your phone in a ransomare attack or to turn it into a bot - don't even think about it!
@@lownitro1385 we found the guy that drank the "security" kool-aid

The bezels were large but also served a purpose. When the M8 came out and shrunk the top speaker, I knew where things were headed... Now every phone claims "stereo" speakers but they are horribly unbalanced and use software to try and fix it, but it's not the same. This isn't to say that phones haven't gotten better we have better ui, better software support, more apps, better batteries, better cameras, better screens, and many cool new features. But there are many things that companies have taken away from us for no good reasons. It comes down to companies changing things to be more profitable.
Companies such as LG who tried to be different and give something good to their customers just couldn't compete with some of the bigger players, so sadly LG has departed from the smartphone market. LG Mobile, you will be remembered 🥲

Worse:

Most of the things that evolved for the worse did so just because of greed.
My take on the iPhone 7 that have no headphone jack trend was to introduce the Airpods to the public. It was a game changer in wireless that were clumsy. But they create a problem that didn't exist, and creating A LOT of e-waste, a dualism of Apple that they were tree hugging company or environmentally friendly
But iPod Nanos are super thin than a iPhone but have a headphone jack.
And have a solid cult buying iPhone, audience that they sell iPhones tend to follow Kim Kardashian 😂
My balance take of this that we hit the peak of smartphone trend, it's sad to say that even SD card support they remove it (because it was slower than the internal storage UFS) headphones jack remove but sell wireless earphones because the average consumer wants it too. Removable battery didn't care as much because they tend to have more space than non removable one, the balance approach here is to be reparable friendly

That's why I sport the Xcover6 Pro.
I loved how the Samsung Galaxy S10 had a HeadPhone Jack and a SD card slot
Hey Snowball - what is the he song playing in the background at 11:40?
Hey. It's called " grass - silent partner"
@Techsnowball thank you
On the surface level android copied the iOS ui, so it feels exactly same for every non savvy user)
Btw the answer to this video is: NO
Removable battery, the micro sd card slot and the headphone jack: They don't matter in era of 512gb internal storage, a battery that easily lasts the entire day and the far superior, inexpensive, yet super convenient true wireless bt ear buds
These old devices were also thick and ugly, no screen bezels is what was the obvious upgrade.
Rocking a Samsung galaxy note 9 on Android 8.1. I will keep this for another 5 years maybe upgrading to android 10 next year.
Also, with the SD cards, I feel like making a smaller sized format than the Micro SD would've been a viable solution, but companies would rather sell you cloud storage than that unfortunately
ngl phones back then were like a part of yourself. a way to express your personality
I miss the time when striking colors, odd shapes, and unconventional UIs were the norm.
nowadays phones are the same neutral color or mute color glass bricks
.
All phone backs are made of glass, and 99% of users use a case making the glass back useless
Phone screens are so big nowadays to the point that you can accidentally touch home if your palm accidentally lands on it.
I sold my iphone and using a chinese midrange: realme 9 5g se, which costs only about $220. It has a snapdragon 778g, nice cameras, headphone jack, great battery, good speed. I'm happier with it than i ever was with my iphone 12 or 13. I Don't want to buy a super expensive flagship ever again. At the end if the day, you can get everything you need from a phone in a good midrange.
Underrated like crazy bro please keep making videos.
Will do
My mom had that HTC m7, it was a wonderful device, until the camera turned purple one day(a chronic problem in that phone), and htc services couldn't fix that damn issue, I never seen a flagship phone be that flawed tbh. But the beats headphones that came with it were awesome
Not only have prices continued to soar but the value you get out of the same type of things has gone down. It's called shitflation.
I miss bezels and home buttons so much. I miss being able to pick my phone up without mistouching everything. But apple and youtubers convinced everyone bezels are worse than Hitler
Honestly, the control bar on the bottom with a clickable home button is a feature I'd love to come back. Rather than make apps make it appear and disappear, I'd love to just have them there 100% of the time
4:32 bro thinks he is mrwhosetheboss 💀
Phones are definitely not better back then. But phones used to be fun.
I bought a Samsung S8 in 2018.
My main functions were email, slack and authentication apps along with Whatsapp, phone, gaming and SMS.
S8 was a beast. It was supremely thin and could pull off so many acts with that size.
2024 and I'm using the same apps and playing the same games.
Also how the fuck did Apple get away with removing the headphone jack to "have more space for a bigger battery" and then put a 1821mAh battery in the iPhone 8, that's just a fucking joke.
