Things I got wrong in this video (since I dislike spreading bad information) : There IS a unit veteran system, it's listed on the unit card but it's a little hidden and easy to miss. There's also the trade system which i neglected to get to where you can barter and swap materials with the other players. Sorry about that folks!

It doesn't matter at all in terms of whether or not you would enjoy the game, but the spice is more than just space cocaine. In the lore the spice is what allows the Spacing Guild Navigators to modify their own DNA to gain the ability to see the near-term future. And this ability is what makes interstellar fold-space travel possible to achieve safely. There's more to it than that but that is why the spice is the most valuable commodity in the empire.

Book is definitely worth a read/listen (if you do audio books). It has a really interesting plot point that's really difficult to capture in the movies and games. The movies and games emphasize the traditional military and territorial conflicts you see in so many other franchises. The book, on the other hand, is more about seeing the future and the struggle to manipulate events to guarantee the future they want.

I tried to read this book in my 20s and put it down. It wasn't the political stuff it was the tropes. It was the main character who just seemed to be the writers personal insert fantasy. Young, perfect, "the chosen one", and if I remember the first man (gasp) to be the most powerful of witches (forgive me, forget the name). The bad guy was a mixture of a Saturday morning cartoon and Stan. I respect the book for getting a lot of people into science fiction. I also don't want to take away anyone's fun. Do the characters become more interesting later on? I'd like to give it another try especially with the new hype.

The characters are less like usual sci-fi characters and more like some platonic debaters that are there to challenge the main characters, as well as the readers perspectives and assumptions, making you double question if you're being manipulated like the characters in the book.

at ~3:20 just a clarification, that may also shine new light when rewatching the movie, there are a lot of houses/dynasies in the imperium, and Atreides are getting some sick gains and the emperor doesn't like it one bit, so the whole "kicking out harkonen out of arrakis" thing was mostly a trap set by the emperor to wipe the atreides, making it look like he had nothing to do with that. Kanly with the Harkonnen has been going on for hundreds of years. It's probably why the Baron is so adamant that no Atreides survives the attack even if it means disobeying the Bene Gesserit, an organization far more powerful than a Landsraad great house.

You may not have given Spice enough credit. It really isn't covered well enough in the movie, but spice enables safe FTL travel, as well as extends life and enables good health. Folding space is the main source of interplanetary travel, and if you do it without a hopped up on spice Navigator, you have a 1/10 chance of not appearing where you want at best, at worst you pop up inside a star. The idea is you plot a course, and anything that might be in the way when you fold space you hit. Since it's pretty well instantaneous, you can't navigate around obstacles. So you need to see the future to jump safely, and that's where the Guild Navigators come into play.

Among other useful things, the souce melange allows the Spacer's Guild to see thirty seconds into the future allowing them to navigate interstellar travel without slamming their vessel into a sun or planet. Navigators breathe spice gas and are dependent on doing so for survival
The whole purpose behind the Bene Gesserit selective breeding program is to progenate a human who can navigate without having to OD on spice, also to break the guild monopoly on space travel.
There are a number of other schemes to create alternatives to spice-based travel, such as the Tleilaxu effort to create a synthetic spice. Nobody outside the Spacing Guild really likes living under their monopoly.

FYI: It's not that personal shield made projectile obsolete. They have quite a number of projectile weapons like the dart like weapon that adjust speed to shield and 'lasgun', which is laser weapons. But they don't use 'lasgun' much because no one will survive that encounter. Shield contact with Lasgun creates a nuclear explosion, so everyone dies. It's generally not used unless you are certain you are loosing and prepare to take everyone with you.

The Fremen are the only "good guys" in Dune, and they eventually get screwed by being so. I honestly don't know how the public is going to react to the movies once everything starts going down "The Golden Path" in earnest. Lots of death and Very Bad Things, which audiences like, but they might be feeling kinda betrayed too, which isn't good (regardless of justification).

The basic premise in Dune is that Spice expands your mind and in the hands of The Space Guild it allowed the pilots to Fold Space, in effect, seeing or creating wormholes in space through which ships travel the universe. Without Spice, in essence, there is no space travel. Hence it's importance.

3 minutes in... The emperor awarded Arrakis to House Atriedes to kill them. Harkonnens were doing fine with spice production. I mean they were filthy rich from it. Emperor is afraid that House Atriedes can eventually match his Saudikar in combat ability due to the training of Gurney Halleck and Duncan Idaho. Since the Saudikar are the only thing keeping Shadam IV in power he needs to stop the Atriedes in their tracks and figures a massacre disguised as a blood feud between two houses won't upset the Lansraad

I've seen some early criticism of this game from people who didn't quite get the idea that it's somewhere between an RTS and a 4X. Given that I find myself either bored or crushed by both those types of strategy games, and I really liked the bit of Northgard I've played... This looks my speed.
I think there's 2 things they could implement that would mitigate some of the complaints I've been seeing:
    1) they should have a better notification system pinging you to respond to various events. Everyone I've seen playing this has missed a decision or a tech upgrade or something because it's not alerting players well. Maybe a "remind me" button or something.
    2) customizable difficulty. Make it so you can adjust the difficulty of the diplomacy, combat, economy, etc, individually. Make the RTS aspects harder and the 4X less of an issue or vice versa.
Otherwise, I think they did a great job of adapting the various aspects of the Dune universe into a decidedly modern game. Cool and fun.

I believe the spice is used in their hyper speed travel and that's what makes it worth so much. I also believe they brought atreides on on purpose to destroy them because the emperor is worried about how much they are liked and sees them as a threat.

    • @cericat

It has a lot of uses beyond just allowing the navigators to sense their way through folding space. Related to that it generally acts to expand consciousness, making it useful to the Bene Gesserit as well (and has a link to the water of life used by Jessica and Paul). It could improve longevity, quite significantly allowing people to live up to around 3x normal spans. It also has narcotic properties, which means a lot of people developed a level of dependency on it.
And yes Vladimar and Shaddam IV made a deal to dispose of a popular threat to both of them as house Atreides, and Leto in particular were very popular in the Landsraad and CHOAM Leto understood that, but there were two factors in taking the position of governor, refusal would have seen a reduction of their perceived position and they hadn't expected the sabotage by Yueh or use of Sardaukar (the Emperor's elite soldiers) disguised as Harkonnen troops.

Do you know what would be a cool Dune game? A first or 3rd person survival game where you play a Freman just trying to exist within the Freman society and the planet Arakis. Filled with a rich narrative that surrounds the events of the canon. Like you are an outsider looking from a distance at the canonic conflict between the Houses but are also dealing with your own more pressing issues. Like, that worm is making its presence known in the distance and you're running out of water and that asshole in your tribe just hit you with a Thaddi Challenge. Then after all that you get swept up in some crusade and are following this guy named Leto into battle.
