Simon you're a genius! Love all these info and secrets. Thank you for all these defender videos. I recently got one and want to know everything about them. I'm a DIY person and love growing my knowledge.
I just tried this on mine and it doesn’t make the “boop, boop, boooop” noise as the flaps open. Perhaps that’s a configurable setting. Awesome find 👍 well done.
If the rad matrix is covered in mud, ideally it should be washed out from the fan side. I've seen some rads that superficially looked clean but the fins were actually hard packed deep into the core with dried dirt. This severely hampered engine cooling, intercooler and transmission cooling and, depending on the layering of radiators, the complete failure of the air conditioning as well.
Good info as usual. Never had that on my 08 Defender😂 Too much nonsense that could go wrong. Thermostat should take care of warm up and engine temperature.
Good work again Simon. This idea of washing the radiator from the back made me think of my underbody lance that I use for power washing the underside free of salt etc. It is a cranked steel tube with fan spray nozzle that connect to the Lance on my Nilfisk washer. I wonder if something similar but used at much lower power could work from the engine side. It is perfect for mud and salt anyway! Another thing for you to invent!! 😃😃😃Richard.
Regarding maintenance, do you have any insight on changing the oil and resetting oil change reminder if applicable? Your reviews on this vehicle has been so much help, more than my dealer! Thanks.
Many thanks for your recent radiator wash tip! This was going to be my next truck but, because of that, I am now going to trade my Disco 5 in for something else - any suggestions, seriously! I've gone back to using my 1985 90 despite the noise and lack of heating........
I've been following your videos 👍I tried it yesterday after three years and it was great. (I'd like to know one more question. Navigation Connected Services Licence Expiring) (ONLINE PACK Subscription expired) What should I do in China。
Hiya this just an observation and experience from cleaning mud plastered motorcross bikes Surely the direction of jetting water needs to be from engine side out to the front through the back of the rad. Jetting from the front is going to force / push stones and all the crap deeper into the fins.
Precisely. Except that everything is so enclosed these days, mainly to save cats lives [yes really] that it is exceptionally difficult to near the back of the rad, much less aim a jet methodically over the majority of its surface area.
I think that would be good but not sure how possible that is with the space provided... we cleaned it from the front when we had the car stripped down and it seemed to clean pretty well from the front.
@@hedydd2 yep totally agree Huw Maybe some kind of right angle attachment is needed for the end of the jet wash wand, I could do with one for cleaning my defender
Simon, would you be able to comment on the issue of the jet engine like roar coming from the operation of the cooling fan in the radiator of my 2024 Defender 110 2.0L 4 Cylinder Turbo? Runs for 1-3 minutes after engine shut off every time, extremely loud. I assume this is normal, just cooling down the turbo, but I have never heard anything like this on any vehicle. Forums and dealership seem to think this is "probably" normal, but nobody seems to know for sure. Thanks!
Heres a thing...when engine is cold the thermostat is not sending water to radiator so no need to shut flaps to help engine heat up quicker. however I get for drag and wading reasons why its there. :)
You ar ecorrect but there must be some benefit in covering the air passing over the engine etc.... like the old radiator muffs on the old cars ( which also had thermostats )

Yes they do close in wading but on the off road coarse i was on it was more muds and ruts with some big water filled dips... did not have time to change modes for each dip so left it in muds and ruts... would TR2 ( Auto ) have sensed water and closed the flaps... i doubt it is that good ?
Seems way more complicated than it needs to be. There’s way to many electrics on these now not disputing they are a great car but I do very much question the reliability and being able to fix them easily anywhere has gone. Cant see many farmers or contractors buying them as Commercials as much as I do think it’s a step forward I do feel landrover have missed what made the defender great
While I'm in a whiney frame of mind, what I really don't like on off-road or rough road vehicles is the habit of siting intercoolers down low in front of the front wheels, with vents or slats allowing warmed air out through the wheel arch liner. Firstly the intercoolers get covered in rubbish because they are low down [on some V engines there is one on each side], but the worse thing is that the sh1t that is thrown off the tyres sticks to the wheel arch liners and blocks the air exit slots. Power hosing inevitably washes muck into the cavity, filling behind the intercooler and in front of the wheelarch and ultimately adding a surprising amount of weight and limiting the cooling. Hope LR don't have any kind of radiator in that silly position like I had on a Q7 and, on one side, the Honda. The best solution for a Defender is an air-to-water intercooler positioned in the engine bay, but I don't know what LR have done Rant over.
Unfortunately for my cost I found out there is a small radiator right behind the fog light. I hit a deer almost at 5 mph when I hit it and the trim around the fog light pushed into the radiator. I had a look and no other damage than the pushed in trim. Was very happy. Then I heard water dripping. 😒. Luckily I was less than a mile away from home in NE USA. So it was cold. Got home quickly. Now waiting for parts to fix it. The dealer has no date on parts. Not available in the US or UK. PS. The deer walked away. I agree with you. Why would you put a radiator almost at the axle level in the front of an off road vehicle.. I am sure there is a good reason, not sure what.
The new Defender does indeed have a low down radiator in the arch... and you lead me to another point.... when in wading mode the flaps close to stop muddy water getting in the radiator... but there is no such protection for the arch mounted radiators
