I work on them. One thing not mentioned on this vid is the reason you have to adjust the valves is the valve in question is wearing the head out which makes the valve adjustment tighten up. If you are adjusting the valves often you might as well get ready to replace the head. And a valve adjustment will not always fix the problem if the head is bad.
I just bought one of those used Amazon bikes from somebody. Aunt have been perusing videos to find out what I can do to make it run better. So I just wanted to say thanks for your video, it's very fun, very informative, and very straight to the point. You earned a subscriber out of me for sure

I just got a 1987 Suzuki Fa50, it runs alright as is but since it has over 3000 miles [actually I should check if it's in Km or not] on it and I have no idea on the maintenance history I've been looking for videos and guidance on home maintenance so I don't need to take it into the shop for everything. Your channel has been really helpful so far
This was very easy and saved my moped. I thought it was low compression because it would barely start with the electric start when cold and i'd have to kick it and wait for it to die and restart a few times and let it warm up for 15 mins before I can get it to ride without dying. Now the moped fires right up when cold and works perfectly. Thanks!
This video is fantastic, lots of good information, clear and easy to hear/understand. You don't have nearly enough subs for such a high quality channel. Never change
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! This might just be why my 125cc ped is got low compression and not starting or running properly , already spent £150 on it and I will make sure I wont spend a penny more
Havent worked on a scooter engine for over 20 years, didnt exacly how to ajust the valves anymore. This video really helped me! Thank you for this clear and simple d.i.y. P.s. did notice the Dutch sticker on the tool trolly 🇳🇱❤
I find when you adjust them intake opening (adjust exhaust) -and exhaust just closes(adjust intake) it's a more accurate way and will give you a different lash than just the TDC method. The TDC method will work but not the right way. JMO
Bro, thanks for uploading this and for taking the time and patience. Very helpful. You saved me a ton of money on parts I didn't need to buy and work that didn't need to be done.
@@Scooter_911 so since March I've been scouring Craigslist for scooters and mopeds. I finally purchased an SSR Lazer 5, 4 stroke. 291 miles on it, basically fresh still. I adjusted the idle screw yesterday without much effect on the stalling issue and was prepared to buy an aftermarket carb, jets and cdi. I'll be doing the valves in about an hour thanks to you. I'll check in later with the results.
@@Scooter_911 ok I was able to do the valve adjustment. She's running much better now, especially idling. I do believe I'll take it for a long ride tomorrow and then fine tune the job I did. My engine is set up a bit differently so the feeler was bent a little bit. I may still have too much lash but nowhere near where it was. Again we're talking about a 300 mile engine so it was running on factory assembly specs and heat expansion/break in. Thanks again my friend.
This video has made me way more confident to try fixing my scooter (2005 Kymco People 50). Thanks a bunch for making these and posting them. You clearly take a lot of time with the sound effects (I laughed) and the multiple camera angles. Grateful for your content!
One of the best explanations and presentations I have seen! Thank you and congratulations! Would have liked to see it run after fix to come full circle.
I always had a problem setting valves in cold or hot adjustments. However, it was never explained as well as you demonstated. Again, great job. Thank you.
Make sure you adjust them at the right top dead center (TDC). The piston is at TDC two times per combustion stroke. There's a mark for TDC on the flywheel, that you can see if you take the plastic cover from the fan. Turn the flywheel until the T mark is aligned with the pointy bit on the crank case. Then check if the 2 holes in the timing sprocket allign with the edge of the cilinder head. The smaller third hole should pointing forward. Then you have the right TDC. I did this wrong once, so you don't have too. 😂👍
@@Scooter_911 you are also right. It's just a double check with the markings. I am just about to set the valve clearance on a friends scooter. The scooter hardly starts when it's warm, and it doesn't accelerate anymore, well it does for a second, then almost stalls, then goes again... I was suspecting ignition trouble, but first thing I am going to check is the valve clearance. Second thing is the vacuum membrane in the carburetor, might have a crack or puncture in it.
Just bought a used Tao Tao 50cc Scooter. Ran ok for the first couple of weeks, then as of yesterday won't start. I have never worked on any kind of engine, (I'm a Chef lol) but feel confident with it following this video! Here goes nothing
Absolutely love your vids. In the middle of a valve adjustment now. Fingers crossed! It runs rough for a minute then does. Hopefully the adjustment solves it. It’s a 150 QMJ so I hope the clearances are the same.
Really glad I could see this video. I'll try repairing my scooter myself. I took it to the shop with a complaint of it having trouble to start and dying whenever I stopped during the rides. It sat at the shop for more than a week and the guy of the service said he tried starting it himself a few times and had no problem, so there was nothing wrong. He then proceeded to explain to my boyfriend that women always show up with this "unfunded complaint" and that probably I was just pulling the throttle while starting, and that this mistake (that according to him only woman did) was the problem and that I should just learn how to start my scooter properly.
Hi Garret. I'm really grateful for your guidance. Had exactly this problem on my little Gomoto 150 cc and your video worked like a charm. Thanks a million buddy. Ash
Thank you. im sure this might be the reason. I think ill engage a mechanic now I don't have all the tools and expertise to go that far. This looks more expect requirement.
Ms. Thandi, I performed my first valve lash adjustment on my motorcycle 50 years ago, it is *not* hard to do. Get yourself a cheap tool kit from Harbor Freight, (Google them), when they go on sale, (which is a lot). Make sure that all the tools you need are included in the kit. Buy a set of feeler gauges there as well, you'll pay very little money for all the tools that are more than adequate for this job. Next, take your phone out to your scooter and pause this video step-by-step. After you perform this job just one time, you'll have payed for you tools, and have a real sense of accomplishment! PS, he didn't mention it in the video, but you should not make the adjustments when the engine is hot, (shortly after a ride), nor cold, (below about 50F degrees), because the clearances will change once the engine gets hot again. I would love a reply if you do it!
Hey Garret, just got my Yamaha bws fixed , ii messaged you 4 weeks ago when it broke down .thanks again for your help mate .it cost me 1300 to fix ,second hand engine assy and new carby & air filter .there was a shopping bag handle jammed up in the engine so when I accelerated the oil wasn't getting through and broke the engine 😵. Any recommendations to tune it . Feels a little rough at take off ,but fine when I get enough speed .your a legend mate thanx again 🇦🇺💯💥
YOU, SIR are an awesome instructor, with clear audio and camera work. My Genuine Motor Company "Buddy 50" is having starting issues, such as depicted, but I can always get it going my using the kickstart. Apparently, I've the same problem, the valve clearance, which I'll have addressed, but I'd like to know WHY it would start with the kickstart without even depressing the START button??????? MANY THANKS!
I saw an article on using a cabinet screw , bent at an L shape because the square drive fit the square perfectly on the valve adjuster (4mm I believe ) and if you turn 1/8 of a turn, from zero clearance , it would be exactly . 004” gapped !! Pretty cool.
Wow you just made me a subscriber. You explained this valve adjustment very clear compare to other videos. I would like to request for you to make a video on vacuum hoses and fuel lines for 50cc scooter thanks
Hola Garret! Thank God I found you! My greenpower 3 wheeled retro style electric scooter, my joy, starts but won t speed up more than 1 mile and I have no idea what s wrong or how to fix it. Please Garret, enlighten me!. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks brother. It worked. It seems strange that increasing intake lash | 0.002 to 0.003 | exhaust | 0.003 to 0.005 | should drastically change the QMA139 engine performance, in my case. But there it is.
Thank you for the AWESOME tutorial Video. Great Job! I found an OLD 2005 Chinese "Qingqi" 4 Stroke GY6 Scooter with only 700 miles, this will fix the issue.
Now thats another very useful instruction video because i never dared working on valves before but def willing to give this a try on my Kymco Agillity which i bought today. So thank you for the very clear instructions.
no he sucks.. he didnt even recheck valves after tightenng and did not look like was gonna be tight anyway.. THEN he does not even check to see if it starts and runs and restarts any better or smokes or starts without kick I would go 5 times... before putting covers back?!?! then at end he runs it 5second and pulls away.. shows no improvement.. hope he does not do this for a living

I have a Cabo 50cc that has been bogging on hills lately, losing RPM. I've changed the belt, and checked the carburetor but they both seem alright although I got about 5 MPH better with a new belt. Hoping the valve adjustment will do the trick. Thank you for all your videos, new to the moped scene and although I've worked on cars never on bikes 🏍
I bought my sym with 2500 miles on it, changed the oil every 750 miles, sparkplug 3 times, it's now on 24,000 miles and I've never checked the valve clearance, it has good compression on the kick-start, doesn't rattle, idles smoothly so I just use it. I've had a few sym scooters that use the gy6 engine and after checking the others first time when I bought them the clearance hadn't changed in the next 4000 miles , I do however check the belt every 4000 miles and replace at 15000 as having one break while riding can really spoil your day.
Hey bro, love the vids! Please keep it up! I just did this on my GTS 250 after installing some fun new malossi engine upgrades and driving for a few hundred miles more than I should have. Made a massive difference in smoothness and power delivery. I was surprised at how much of a difference it made. Recently, I've been getting into video production. I'm curious to know, what kind of camera are you using?
Awesome man! That's a killer kit! To answer your video question, this video was shot entirely with a cannon vixia vf500 that bought off Craigslist for $60. In some of my other videos I use a Garmin virb for under-hood and action shots. I then edit everything in iMovie. I use the Imovie voice-over function and a Korg microkorg synth to put in my bloops and bleeps sound effects and I created all of my theme music in GarageBand. Hope that answers your question and then some!

Just got my taotao and trying to fix it. Found your video and while I haven't tried the method yet, I love your video. Really breaks it down and your terrible puns/sound effects are fantastic.
So glad you liked it! Let me know if it helped you out!
@@Scooter_911 made the valve adjustment but I'm having serious trouble otherwise. On my page is a video of what it's doing. If you have a minute could you check it out please?

Thanks!
Hey Garret!! My name is Timmy, and I just want to thank you for making these tutorial videos, unfortunately LOL I did buy a pony Tao Tao, I've had it for about 4 months now and everything that broke on the one you bought broke on mine as well, thanks to you I now can perform a valve adjustment on mine. ✌️ 🕊️
Time for a big bore kit
I just bought one of those used Amazon bikes from somebody. Aunt have been perusing videos to find out what I can do to make it run better. So I just wanted to say thanks for your video, it's very fun, very informative, and very straight to the point. You earned a subscriber out of me for sure
Thanks Garret, great video, scooter now starts runs like new. Not being mechanical I appreciate the education.
That is so great to hear! Exactly why I made this video!
Thanks so much master mechanic. I lost 3days of work but I got my bike back on the road with one try awesome
I wish i had a knowledgeable small engine mechanic like you living near us...
I've never been into mechanics stuff, but I LOVE the way you teach. You drawing it out and giving clear explanations helped me wrap my mind around this. Keep up the fantastic work.
The video game noises were a great touch btw 👌🤣
Love you man! You have helped me continue to ride several occasions as ive always been a do it myself er and i have continued to pass on your knowledge and repairs to many others. Its surprising how there isnt any scooter repair shops in my city not even parts... There is one scooter issue i cudnt resolve with youre or any videos online and that was a non starting scooter or once starting but not accelerating after replacing belt that tore while taking off luckily i bumped into an ex mechanic of closed shop that told me variater weight can shoot around if belt splits while driving and i made sense and thats what it was i was soo close to juat trashing the scooter lettin it go for parts and that was the only problem search for it online u can never find an answer for that repair im sure many are sitting with that issue....
Thanks Garret for as you say, "empowering me to fix my own scooter...just a bucket of bolts..."
Wow thank yo very much! I'll try!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
This might just be why my 125cc ped is got low compression and not starting or running properly , already spent £150 on it and I will make sure I wont spend a penny more
The sound effects slay me, dude XD
Also thank you, I FINALLY understand what valve adjustment means!
JMO
Wow I have not hear of that . And I am willing to try it. Thanks
It's like Ben Wyatt is showing me how to work on my scooter. Thanks for the video!
Bro, thanks for uploading this and for taking the time and patience. Very helpful. You saved me a ton of money on parts I didn't need to buy and work that didn't need to be done.
Man that is so good to hear. Thats exactly why I make videos!
Yeah in hindsight I should have filmed it running more. I thought the scooter starting right up in the final scene would be more impactful.
I always had a problem setting valves in cold or hot adjustments. However, it was never explained as well as you demonstated. Again, great job. Thank you.
Thanks garret. Confidence inspiring. I wish you taught my accounting classes in college.
Thank you 🙏 I was stuck on this issue and this video helped a lot much appreciated 👌
Exactly! That is why I like to wait for the intake valve to close. Right after it has closed you know you are on the compression stroke!
Yes indeed! Those valve lash specs work for all chinese scooter engines!
Well you know it too go there for other services
Hi Garret. I'm really grateful for your guidance. Had exactly this problem on my little Gomoto 150 cc and your video worked like a charm. Thanks a million buddy. Ash
Excellent video. Seriously I'm impressed and thanking UA-cam for being the true land of the free.
My scooter now starts up great, can at least idle at stop signs (though a bit finicky), and is way faster. Thanks!
Nice work! I'm glad to have helped!
Brilliant, so clear and concise.

Thank you very much! Always glad to make an acquaintance across the pond!
This videos soundscape has a don't hug me I'm scared kinda vibe :) This dude knows his stuff. I'll subscribe.
Thank you. im sure this might be the reason.
Your awesome dude that was perfectly informational, I can totally do that to my scooter now
YOU, SIR are an awesome instructor, with clear audio and camera work.
German Torque Specs!!! Awesome video!
I saw an article on using a cabinet screw , bent at an L shape because the square drive fit the square perfectly on the valve adjuster (4mm I believe ) and if you turn 1/8 of a turn, from zero clearance , it would be exactly . 004” gapped !! Pretty cool.
Wow thats very interesting!
Awesome vid bro. You are an excellent instructor
I had the same problem and I ordered a CDI chip and cleared it straight up no more problems starts fine better than before
Wow you just made me a subscriber. You explained this valve adjustment very clear compare to other videos. I would like to request for you to make a video on vacuum hoses and fuel lines for 50cc scooter thanks
Great suggestion! HOSES DEMYSTIFIED! Thanks for the comment! Keep it shiny side up!
Very good explained! Thank you! Please do video about carburator setting/tuning and stator troubleshooting(no spark)
Thank you very much! I have a plan for both of those videos! So stay tuned!
Thanks brother. It worked.
It seems strange that increasing intake lash | 0.002 to 0.003 | exhaust | 0.003 to 0.005 | should drastically change the QMA139 engine performance, in my case. But there it is.
Very informative. Now I can dive on in to my Aprilia 200cc, but being careful that it is a bigger engine.
Oh and I like the Centipede music😁
Thank you for the AWESOME tutorial Video. Great Job! I found an OLD
2005 Chinese "Qingqi" 4 Stroke GY6 Scooter with only 700 miles, this will fix the issue.
This video is amazing! Instant sub... Great pace and detailed explanations. Loved especially the whiteboard with the theory on what should be fixed.
Thanks dude! Glad you liked it!
Terrific video how to step-by-step valve adjustment!! I just bought a 2018 Tao Tao ATM 50cc scooter, my second one in 8 years...thanks for the video!!
Thank you very much! And congrats on your new purchase! Keep it shiney side up!
This dude is the Bill Nye of scooter mechanics
Dang! Thats high praise!
I hope not Bill Nye is so wrong so many times this Guy gets ti right
Laugh
Now thats another very useful instruction video because i never dared working on valves before but def willing to give this a try on my Kymco Agillity which i bought today. So thank you for the very clear instructions.
no he sucks.. he didnt even recheck valves after tightenng and did not look like was gonna be tight anyway.. THEN he does not even check to see if it starts and runs and restarts any better or smokes or starts without kick I would go 5 times... before putting covers back?!?! then at end he runs it 5second and pulls away.. shows no improvement.. hope he does not do this for a living
I do enjoy watching Garrets scooter videos there easy to follow and understand, thanks guy. I was wondering why you didn’t test your results before putting all the panels back in this particular video?
You sound so much like Norm Abrams. Just without the Boston accent. I love it.
Nice job man! Very well done and professional 🥸
Worked on my dong fang 50cc, your a life saver thanks..
Great production work, well scripted and executed.
Thank you!!!! Brand new scooter and I couldn't get it to stay running. Adjusted the valves and now it runs like a charm!!!
I absolutely love this video! I definitely feel empowered and encouraged! Thanks! Great info and funny. 👏
Yeessssssss!!!!!!!!! Mission accomplished!
@@Scooter_911 I own a Havana Classic 125. It's fairly new. I've done research on it. Seems like I have to change oil and filter often.
@@Silver-cl2bd absolutely! The engine design is much different than a car and requires much more frequent service intervals. Luckily it's pretty cheap if you do it yourself
@@Scooter_911 thanks! I'll definitely be working on it myself. I'll be subscribing and checking back on your channel for your vids! 🤩
I just had this done at a shop. I'm really glad you posted this video so now I understand what was needed. Thank you
Glad it was of use to you! And even more glad you're taking your engine maintenance seriously! Good on you!

Great video. Your very knowledgeable and you don't babble on unnecessarily like most ppl in their videos. I will be subscribing to your chanel. Big thumbs up.
Dude, I love your videos. You explain them so thoroughly, it makes things seem so simple. I guessitis
Thank you very much!
I see a lot of different spec on valve adjustment my icebear 150cc calls for .008intake and .012exhaust
Great video! Very clear about what to do. I have the same scooter and was interested in installing a big bore kit on it and would love to see you make a video on how to that correctly. Thanks again for the great video
stay tuned! I've got that exact video in the works!

Did the valve adjustment work?
I bet 99.9 of scooters on the road have never had a valve adjustment.
Smh
@@integrationofmanandmachine4714 I know , right?
@@slamboy66 yup
@B E you know all they do is put gas in it.
I tried everything. This worked. Started right up. Thank you
Glad to hear it!
