Meathooked & End of Water (VICE on HBO: Season 4, Episode 5)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 лип 2017
- The world is addicted to meat: In developing countries around the world, diets are starting to look more like ours, incorporating more and more beef and pork. Massive factory farms are springing up to supply that demand. But industrial meat operations produce more than just cheap T-bones; they also dish out enormous environmental harm. VICE travels to the feedlots, farms and slaughterhouses where our meat is made, to see the true costs of our burger habit.
Water is the single most vital resource we have -- but it's also one of the most threatened. Around the world, from the American West to China, South Asia and the Middle East, the water we need is simply disappearing. VICE reports from California's once-abundant farmland and the heart of São Paulo's reservoir system to assess the depths of the crisis, and what can be done to reverse it.

My grandmother grew up on a farm. Born 1902. The only meat they ate during the summer was summer sausage, meat that was cured, dried and smoked in the winter.
The fact that most people eat meat in the summer came about because of refrigeration. It is a relatively new habit.

Matthew Kopp Good teachings...
Notice how they filmed this in Brazil, because if you're a reporter trying to get in with a camera in the United States, the factories would never let you in, because they don't want you to see the truth of our meat industry. That doesn't include how unregulated the factories are too.
(Edit)- Y'all may have different opinions, and that's great, but we all need to respect each other's opinion! I like to see, and hear others opinions as long as y'all aren't straight up rude and one-sided. If y'all have an opposing opinion feel free to comment, but not if your going to attack someone!

Feed lot cattle get finaplix pellet injections, AKA trenbolone.
well it is safer to be a vegetarian if you are inactive. there are less risks and you require less energy. but trying to be a vegetarian and work a physically demanding job your body will fight you every step of the way. Especially if you cant afford the supplements necessary to make your body function properly.

I live in Tulare County. The problem is flood irrigation and the amount of nut trees we have. Nut trees, along with corn, take incredible amounts of water for a good harvest. Summers average 112 degrees and we have problems with farmers watering during the heat of the day.
The problem isn't the meat eating its mass production, a lack of awareness and appreciation for what you are eating. People don't even need this much meat how much of it goes to waste and gets thrown away. If people focused more on limiting their meat consumption and if local farmers got the respect and correct pay this wouldn't be an issue. I'm trying my best to maintain a vegan diet myself but I dont expect everyone to convert, I just wish people would stop being so ignorant and careless about their choices. Every little thing makes a difference just put in the effort. Care for our planet and yourself
BearWithMe completely agree. I don’t think everyone can be completely vegan, a lot of vegans are deficient, showing that maybe humans do need some form of meat, but we don’t need to eat as much meat as we do. I had a nutritionist professor that said meat should be the smallest portion on our plates, not the biggest or the main.
True there is meat that goes to waist everyday and ends up in the trash especially in restaurants..
Marshaa Brady I can list you at least one hundred atleats that run on a 100 per cent vegan diet. It's just the social pressure that feeds our fear. I mean, most doctors don't want to produce negative reactions in a system that can easily get them fired.

Good Job vice. The awareness has to be spread further. Everybody has to know what we are supporting with our buying decisions. No more excuses
As someone who hunts and butchers my own meat those factories are amazingly efficient and clean. The problem isn’t the processing plants it’s what the animals are fed. Cows are perfectly happy in the feedlots too by the way. I’ve been around cows and pigs my whole life and the animals are very happy and comfortable for the most part. But I agree the fees given the animals and medicine is unhealthy. And the waste is a problem as well.

This was sooo interesting
I've been trying to cut meat out of my diet lately. Both for health and moral reasons. Compounded with the realizations that I can't call myself a lover of animals while eating them without being a hypocrite (I hate hypocrites) and what the methane that comes as a result of farming these animals is doing to the planet as a whole, I just figured I'd give it up.
Well done.

if i ever felt like we are on a lifeboat with too many ppl, it's now after watching this vid.... the resource wars are coming
Watch a movie called "Cowspiracy" it's amazing, beef is the #1 problem, more than all the cars and ships and planes etc.
I've given up all warm-blooded animals, just fish, clams, shrimp oysters etc and I feel pretty good. Not ready to go full veggie but I think if we stuck to cold-blooded animals, it'd do the planet -and the animals - a huge favor.
With an international agreement regarding the oceans. Overfishing, pollution, oil spills, etc.
japan is a culture that has thrived almost exclusively through seafood and that has caused enormous issues with overfishing which ultimately leads to destroying ecosystems as well as livelihoods. There was a video I watched recently where a fishing village in japan had no where to turn because their source of income and food was no where to be seen. It seemed like the fish had just disappeared. This had caused the local sharks to go further inland, closer to the shores, in search of food, and the fisherman quickly blamed them and started a tradition of hunting the sharks in hopes that it would bring fish back to their region. Ultimately the goal is for us as a species to correctly evaluate that capitalism left unchecked quickly devolves into selfish greed. We need to live more sustainably, we need to cut down on meat consumption, we need to crack down on the companies that cut corners and destroy and pollute to no end in an attempt to raise profits. We all have a part to play in this story but ultimately it is going to come down to how much we can control big business and how the overall population can adjust to more expensive food as a result.
Now you can watch the documentary Seaspiracy on Netflix. It's all the same. Incredibly destructive. It's best to just stay away and leave animals alone.
This made me hungry.
This past year I decided to change my lifestyle. I don't know if its just me getting old, or the fact that I'm a father, or I actually give a damn but the one change I thought would be the most difficult to adhere to, my diet, has turned in to the easiest. I'm not now, nor will I ever, call myself a vegetarian but I've decided to cut mine & my family's red meat & chicken intake to only 4 days a week. Its been an incredibly easy transition. The reason for the change-and I think they touched on it in this video- was/is sustainability. No other reason & I understand my change has very little effect on the planet today but hopefully my children will adopt this change permanently & raise their own children this way & all this may indeed help the planet, for the good.
What is not sustainable is large, intensive, industrialized mono-cropping. The discussion needs to begin at defining sustainability and what methods should be sustained to sustain water quality and availability as well as soil fertility. Water quality and soil fertility are not one without the other. Sustainable farming in organically managed operations prove beneficial to accumulating soil organic matter (which provides nutrients, a thriving microbiome, water and air storage, protection against erosion, etc) as well as carbon sequestration and nutrient turnover (preventing nutrient leaching/runoff). LETS CONTINUE THE REAL CONVERSATION.
Nath at least some one knows more than the average person, awesome! But all booms must bust, as civilizations always let greed over take them 👎What can we do spread the word, build soil, save water, and tryin feed ourselves and loved ones in a sustainable manner! Lifes Good! Dont forget that through all the gloom.
Here's the solution. Raise the cost of beef. Done.

Funny how they are all laughing joyfully in the face of animals about to be killed and slaughtered into food. Oh boy. Years from now we will look back at this time with horror at the normalization of the torture and slaughter of sentient pain bearing beings.
I recently went vegetarian about 4 weeks ago. I wanted to try it out as a challenge for a week and stuck with it after I liked it. I would recommend to at least try it for a week. It'll be a challenge but know that it's for a good cause.
I had a lot of acne in my face but with a vegetarian diet and no red meat only chicken or fish every two weeks now i have a clear skin and a healthy body. Try it people, think about our planet and your body.
This is a noble thing to do (and this is coming from a butcher) not everyone will go vegetarian though. The problem is we're addicted to meat, breakfast, lunch, dinner, for a snack. How'd it get like this? We made it cheep, we sacrificed the humanity of the animal for the profit margin of the corporation and that's disheartening to all butcher's (not these factory butcher's, there just factory workers no different then an assembly line) if we raised the animals humanely one you'll have a better product, you can tell if an animal wasn't fed well or neglected by the grain structure of the meet it gets all lose and looks like shit (usually customers think the butcher just fucked up). Two you'll have lower meat sales because raising the animal humanely cost more but finally thirdly you'll have BIGGER PROFIT MARGINS CAUSE THE QUALITY OF THE BEEF IS BETTER. It's better all around besides the fact that McDonald's will be outraged at the price of beef.
LITERALLY not a "good cause" 😂 deprive your self of a human need. We are omnivores.
You do know agriculture as a whole use A LOT OF WATER, not just livestock right ? It's not about we eat less, it's about we change the way we produce.

How sad do you have to be to ignore a global catastrophe just because of being afraid it relates to the word "vegan"
it's too late for a negotiated sane managed solution , the only solutions will present themselves in some future post apocalyptic landscape
Vegan is also not a solution, we need to eat less meat and we need to produce our meat more responsibly. In Europe a lot of cattle is grass fed and i know that in the Netherlands 80% goes outside for at least 120 days 6 hours per day.
Brian Green humans need meat, vegan or vegetarian is not a sustainable solution either. There has to be a middle ground. We over-consume and waste massive amounts of food. This is not a simple one step solution, simply having the world go vegan does not provide the necessary changes. The problem has to be attacked on several different fronts. Also I tried a vegan diet and let me tell you if you work outside or in a labor field 70+ hours a week that diet does not sustain you I almost needed up in the hospital we need the nutrients meat contains. Sure a vegan diet works great when you sit at a desk all day unfortunately a large percentage of the workforce does not.
