- When California enacted the End of Life Option Act last October amid fierce debate, the number of terminally ill Americans with the right to a doctor-assisted death effectively quadrupled. But in parts of Europe, euthanasia is administered far beyond the terminally ill, including those with autism, depression, and personality disorders. Yes and No. every state has a different law for both of these. in some, both are illegal, in some both are legal, and in some, only one is legal. You cannot judge the entire US.

I actually brought this up with my Dr last week. She didnt change the subject, she listened. Dignity for the dying creates peace and comfort for that person.

As a nurse this is the most beautiful thing, letting a patient go in PEACE. No pain, no suffering just a blissful sleep. Every human deserves this choice
Sometimes I think we do more harm than good in medicine. I always stress to my patients that it is perfectly ok to stop aggressive treatment. The endless pursuit of avoiding death at all costs in medicine is such a problem
As a Hospice bath nurse I agree. I’ve seen it all. Its so heart breaking to see them in pain and suffering. I remember one time a pt told me 10 mins for her is like 3 hours for us. She for approved for the injection and she passed away in peace.
I'm in nursing school (RN-BSN) and this is one of the reasons I want to be a hospice nurse.... Life is hard enough. I want to help make sure people can pass being nurtured and given dignity
Back in the winter of 2018 one of my best friends started feeling really unwell and alot of us at the cat rescue we all worked at and were very passionate about noticed she had a horrible cough which I can only describe as it sounded like she was going too stop breathing at any moment and out of concern we all begged her to seek medical care and she kept dismissing the symptoms til one day we heard from her husband that she passed out at home and ended up in hospital. We all went to visit her in hospital and shortly after being admitted to hospital she found out she had lung cancer that had spread to her breasts and other areas of her body and it was late stage and untreatable. They discussed chemo therapy and radiation with her to extend her life some. She had a deathly fear of needles and hospitals and medical care in general after some trauma she suffered with medical care . She decided not to seek chemo and radiation therapy because of side effects and it really would not extend her life that long to warrant the suffering involved in the treatment. She chose hospice care and enjoying the time she had left with family and one of the last conversations I had with her was to say goodbye and tell her I loved her and would miss her greatly. She made the choice that was right for her and her family. Everyone should have the right to stop aggressive medical treatment or even assisted suicide . I miss you dearly my friend. RIP

My great-grandfather lived to be 99 and he spent the last 5 years of his life in a nursing home trying to starve himself to death so he could just die. It was terrible.

Thank you for this documentary. My father suffered from Alzheimer's disease for 10 years. After slowly losing so many of his capacities (.e.g, walking, showering, reading, driving, and remembering recent things), having hallucinations daily, having fits or rage and anger every so often, and being paranoid often, he was ready to die. He was over his life, or what little was left of it. He definitely wanted a dignified death as opposed to the "natural" death Alzheimer's would eventually lead him to. He didn't want to end up in a long term care facilitiy with other mentally compromised patients; lost, confused, angry, and perpetually doped up. On November 24th 2021 he received his peaceful and dignified medically assisted death. It was so tough and emotionally raw to be there with him on that day, but also so necessary. It was my honour. We know living a good life is an important concept. Having a good death is an important concept, too.
I had a neighbor who was terminally ill with cancer. For years everyone in the apartment complex saw him wither away... he would grow weaker and weaker. It was depressing to see because what we once knew as a charismatic retired man had withered away into this extreamly thin and weak shell of his former self that now needed care, assistance, medicines, and frequent hospital visits. He wasn't as cheerful and talkative as he used to be. He was clearly suffering, in pain, and everyone in the apartment complex knew it. If this bill had passed sooner in California he could have chosen the option to go peacfully on his own terms. Instead, not wanting to suffer any longer, he took his own life with a gunshot to the head one night, in his hand the gun, the other held a plaque and a picture of when he was in his prime serving as a police officer. He took his life about 3 months before the bill passed in California. I wish he had the peacful option then. I fully support the right to legally assisted suicide for the terminally ill
I have paranoid schizophrenia. I was diagnosed with it 20 years ago. It's not a terminal illness but it has caused me a great deal of suffering. I have no intention of ending my life any time soon. But when the bad outweighs the good I'm checking out on my own terms.

I don't like calling it assisted suicide... I call it "doctor assisted transition".

I was born and raised in the Netherlands and my uncle had euthanasia done in 2018 and he told me before his death that he rather go with dignity ! I called him the day before to say good bye and he said im glad you called me today because you cant call me were im going after tomorrow :) RIP uncle Leen

We need to embrace death as we embrace birth. Our views of death are so contorted through fear and loneliness. If we ever get a chance to put an end to our pain, wouldn't it be great to be able to say our goodbyes and have a chance to put everything in order before we leave? I understand it's sad but it really is just the way life is. Our bodies break and sometimes we can't fix that.

I hate the idea of trying to hold on and pretend things are normal for as long as possible only to die when nobody is really ready for it. It's much more logical and much more beautiful to think that you could have a 2 week long celebration of your life and the people you love and you could all come to terms with it slowly rather than an abrupt shock. Like how is that not a better way? I don't understand how anyone can be against assisted suicide. This was a beautiful moment, even her children seemed so much happier with how this took place even when they were so against the choice they looked like they were hurting a lot less.

what are you talking about? Many of us deal with suicide thoughts on a daily basis that does not mean we should do it. You are just trying to open a door I am not sure you can close later
when youre terminally ill death is guaranteed why not choose yourself? why make people suffer when they want to die?
Because there are many factors that can contribute to feeling suicidal. most of us at some points have thoughts about killing ourselves, so making it legal is bad. what is stopping someone who is suffering from depression or bullies or any kind of hardship to just go and kill themselves. we should be trying to stop suicide not promote it. People are already committing it by millions every year and these people are not the ones who suffered their families are

Mrs Right But the type of suicide you are talking about is strictly based on mental health, if some dying from bone cancer and has little no chance of surviving who are you to tell that person no i dont want to have an assisted suicide.
It is cruel to force a person to suffer because you don't agree with their choice that literally affects no one physically but the person dying.
Up until you defy them when they become the majority. They change their tune quickly .. inquisition, witch burning, native extinction.... Then they agree with killing with no reason.
"From our faith perspective" should never be a sufficient start to a rational argument. Its just the same and not answering the question at all. Its important to challenge adults with voting capabilities with answering question from their own perspective following careful thinking, research, rethinking and conversation with others in their broader community's.

Wow - actually witnessing Antoinette's death was ... comforting? I don't mean to sound creepy. To me the scariest thing about dying/death by medical assistance is the mystery of it. She looked so peaceful. And surrounded by love. I think if I ever get terminally ill, I would wish for this kind of death instead of suffering. Thank you so much for publishing this. Humane and ethical.
why should someone suffering from treatment-resistant depression not be seen as having a valid reason to end their life? Isn't suffering suffering regardless of its cause? Do people expect them to live just so those around them can have them in their lives? To me that sounds pretty selfish.

This is a PERFECT of example of why separation of church and state needs to be amended into the constitution. Absolutely preposterous that the Catholic church was able to influence lawmakers.

In a perfect world, yes.
It is far from bigotry. In western societies for any religion to force itself upon the people on a national scale is preposterous. Any religion can assemble and protest or gather wherever that wish, but for symbols of religion to be displayed in public places or for religious ideals to be the driving force behind lawmakers decisions is invasive towards the population that does not follow the same religion. I have no bigotry against religion. However, when I get approached at my home, or confronted on the streets, or told people cannot marry who they wish simply because it is a "sin", yes, I will get a little heated.
In Romania the church is even MORE powerful.

It gets real heavy, real fast when you're asked to sign the documents testifying that death with dignity is their wish.
I stand for assisted suicide. Sometimes just knowing that the option is there helps people who are depressed get out of depression. Knowing that if you make that choice to end your life that a psychiatrist is there to be there with you every step of the way eases some of the pain. I also feel that it would help some people who are left behind say goodbye rather than one day finding their love one in a car or on the ground in their bedroom from a self inflicted wound.

My favorite thing about this subject is that you’d expect all of these people to be scared shitless and so far I’ve seen much more unflinching courage than I ever expected to find. Huge amount of respect to those who are brave enough to end life on their terms.
I find it insane that we won’t grant ourselves the same luxury we afford to our pets in the same situation. Meanwhile, it is all too predictable to see religion standing on the wrong side history.
When you suffer unfathomable pain for such a long time death is no longer scary.

My grandma passed away a few years ago from lung cancer (yep - she was a lifetime smoker), and the suffering she endured was pretty difficult to watch.
She was a devoted Catholic her entire life, and her stance on assisted suicide (she was against it, just in case anyone isn't sure) never changed. She whole-heartedly believed that that only God had the right to take a life. And she lived in Germany, where assisted suicide is legal.
I didn't put this comment here to debate the right to assisted suicide, or the existence of a God and what He would/would not want. I just wanted to show that there ARE people who honestly hold this belief very close to their hearts, and NOT only when they are not in the situation themselves.

They teach hell so that they would stop losing crops of slaves to suicide - please think logically - why if you commit suicide do they take your family lands still to this day in many countries and threaten the left behind with punishment? I had a terminal condition and asked to die when I was 26 as I knew this world was evil and horrible and only those who lied to themselves and drank the koolaid wanted to live and they said that I didn't have the legal right to refuse life saving surgery and if I didn't comply they'd do it anyway and then lock me up for being crazy that I no longer wanted to live and I was a "beautiful young girl." Then when I wanted to take out all my female plumbing as periods are horrific pain every month since childhood, they said it's illegal in America and I'd have to leave the country as my womb is not my own and I can't decide to take it out and not have children. FEAR is what your grandma had and that's just another form of control, not choice. Please wake up. Take care.
Im for euthanasia, my mother suffered of Alzheimer's for years and watching her deteriorate slowly at first and very quickly in the end was devastating. But this made me realize that if I was in a position like this, Id rather die early before the illness takes over and I can't do anything about it anymore.
These life threatening illness don't only take a toll on families emotionally, but also financially.
If people are suffering it is their choice alone if they want to end their lives.
I no longer have quality of life, I am in debilitating pain every day and with that comes depression and the realization that I, no matter how much I would love to live a normal and uninhibited life it is not possible... Should I suffer for 30 or 40 more years? Would it be more reasonable to take my own life in secret and therefore alone?
It should be my choice.

This hits very close to home. My great grandfather was 87 when he lost his wife and he wanted to pass on after that, but my family is very catholic and wouldn't allow that to happen. He had personally said he lived a very full life after being a WWII veteran and having a large family; he was ready to leave. He finally got that opportunity about 2 weeks ago, and he lived to be 92.
RIP to your great grandfather and I thank him for his service. My grandfather served in WW2 as well. His brother Leo was killed over in France when he was only 19. I firmly believe people should have the right to choose how they pass on from this life. I think it should be an in depth process to make sure things are done right, but ultimately humans deserve the right to have the choice.

Same thing happened with my grandfather, his wife passed in her late 40s, he was early 70s. He wants to be with her, after she passed his health got worse, mentally and physically. I am glad hes at peace but I still wish I could hug him one last time.
@@monique81496 my great grandparents were married for 79 years & my dad dad died of a broken heart after his wife of so many years passed away. He became mean and very angry at the world & basically died of a broken heart at the age of 96. Was very sad.
Amazing how there was absolutely no hesitation when she was about to die and told the doctor to inject her with the medicine. She was just like "ya ok do it bye everyone thank you *dies*" She didn't even take a moment to take everything in one last time or to say something deliberate and heartfelt as her last words. I thought she would at least say I love you to her daughter. So different from what I imagined if I was in her situation. Maybe I'm just conditioned by tv and movies to expect something more dramatic. Though it was beautiful the way her last words were thank you and how they said have a nice trip

If I ever die, this is how I would do it. It was very quick and peaceful.
she lived her life in a way, especially during the last months, that already communicated those things. Her daughter had been told she was loved a million times amd shown it for a lifetime. This was something she was doing for herself and for those she cared about Taking everything in one last time doesn't really do much when you've known when you're going to die for quite some time and you've chosen it. I've been around a LOT of dying people (long story but it's part of my job) and when they know they're going, it's never the Hollywood getting in one last ilove u or making eye contact with everyone in the room. It's sheer acceptance and release.
To be honest I would had acted the same. “Love you all, thank you, bye.” I wish I can tell you more but I completely understand her.
Many of us who suffer from chronic physical or mental illness develop a tunnel vision as we develop a form of selfishness. It isn't intentional. And it isn't avoidable. When every fiber of your being is suffering, ones ability to focus on anything else becomes limiting in a way that that suffering becomes your world. Your own wretched, painful world. It is a world where everything and everyone in it becomes diminished by your suffeing.
People with no depression see this as terrifying and tragic.. But we (the global depression club members) see it as pleasant joyful, peaceful journey.

No. I am 40 and have thought about suicide every day since I was 14 as I am chronically depressed. I will continue to deal with my life and how I cope with my feelings as it was God who gave me life and it will be God who takes my life. I am not of any faith or religion only spiritual consciousness. I myself would never choose to end my life for any reason as I believe that every breath is a gift. However, it is also my belief that everyone should have their own choice even if I do not agree.
Life is about the struggle. Once you give up in that struggle, you are no longer human. You are pathetic.

I totally agree with the woman who talked about how we put down animals. We don't allow them to suffer, because it's freaking cruel. People should have the same opportunity. Not just anyone, there needs to be limitations. A doctor that is well trained in this area, should help make that decision. People should not suffer just because. That's insanity.
Everyone needs a living will and I’m advanced directive. I go to the extreme of writing DNR on my chest on my bra and wearing a Necklace but I know that even though I don’t have insurance and even though I don’t have any Desired for reason to continue to live somebody will probably unfortunately save my life and leave me with more torment and more bills and yes I am I am pro life because it’s different demur a baby that is tumor and educated adult that has made their own decisions I’m not talking about a family member killing an old person to get them out of the way or get their money I’m talking about people that make their own decision themselves
We are not animals though.
When my gran passed due to brain cancer, she was no longer who she was by the time of her death. The life had already gone from her eyes after all the surgery to remove chunks of her brain just to keep her alive for a bit longer.
Medicine stretched this lifeless state over 2 years, that was 2 years of extensive care which took it's toll on the family and eventually broke the family apart. She would never have wished this on anyone and given the choice, she would have ended it when she was still able to say goodbye. It would have been hard for everyone, but it would have made the grief transition faster so we could move on with our lives, instead the families now no longer talk to each other.
Screw laws and religions that prevent the right to pass. My grandma passed without dignity, after years of wearing adult diapers, unable to talk with zero quality of life.
bleckers I’m sorry that’s very sad. My grandma suffered too. She was very religious and at the end before becoming almost comatose she begged for death. I wished I could put her out of her misery.
Most Hospice do provide for this kinda on the DL. It not official but with all of my experiences with it, they make sure enuf meds r available if a family member wants to take care of things quietly.
But for the families that don't understand or r unaware of this unwritten/unofficial kind of thing or if there's a selfish family member that won't let go, horrible ends like yours happen.

I’m so sorry. My grandma recently died of lung cancer so I can relate. It was the most traumatic thing to witness. She was in hospice and basically died of dehydration because she wasn’t able to drink. 13 days with no water and she could hardly breathe for the last week. Because American hospice systems suck, she wasn’t allowed IV’s or a breathing device. She got one small bottle of narcotics for the very end and my mom who has never been trained in medicine had to administer it.
@@agees924 I'm sorry when my aunt was in hospice she was given iv and the painkillers her doctors had already prescribed were in liquid form and she would just hold it in here mouth til it went down. I'm so sorry your gran had to go like that and u and your mother had to watch.

Incurablederp watching this all I could think was tomorrow she wont be here and broke my heart, but these people are happy and make the decision. I would much rather go out and tell everyone who cares for me what they mean to me and vice versa and die a peaceful death with everyone.

Beautiful procedure. If we can make death comfortable for our pets, why can't we do the same for people? Everyone dies, so it's kinda like inducing labor- expediting a natural process.
Yes, death is often a horror, struggling for breath that doesn’t come or languishing in pain that only increases. Maybe, if it were peaceful, we wouldn’t fear it as much. I know I have sat and wondered what the dying process will feel like when I go. We already have our mortality to ponder, why make it gruesome, as well?
When you watch your mother in hospice hang on for nearly 7 days without eating or drinking because she is dying of cancer that spread from her lungs to her brain and spine telling her that it is ok to let go that you don't want her to suffer anymore but no, she hangs on. You sit there and watch her wake up startled and scared because she doesn't know what's going on, she has no clue who you are and you cannot do anything for her but hold her hand and will her to let go. You love her with all of your heart but you don't want her to suffer anymore then she already has.Yes, I would have supported a doctor-assisted death.

I don't see how it was intense, all of us are going to die one day. She was an old woman and she choose her end, not a lot of people can have that option.
Personally I don't think this is even a question of right and wrong and I think it's futile to even attempt to divide such aspect of live into these categories. For people with terminal illness (for instance cancer), which they nevertheless is going to die from, the death may prolong to weeks and even months, keeping them in a state in which they themselves aren't aware that they are alive or able to express feelings towards people they love and care about. For the family this this can be an extremely stressful and painful time, watching the person you love gradually degrade into death in pain and desperation.

I can get behind this for people with terminal illnesses as a way to avoid needless suffering, but the idea of doctors euthanizing otherwise healthy patients with depression or other mental illnesses rather than treating their underlying conditions is frankly murder.

If I ever get into a situation where an illness prevents me from functioning, prevents me from socializing, prevents me from being conscious or incapable of listening and speaking, then I'd want to die. I don't want my body to be a burden to anyone anywhere. I want to be given that mercy as well as choose that pathway.
People against such a decision do not fully understand the implications of such problems and are blind to what it does.

I have severe ME/CFS. There is no cure or treatment for this debilitating disease. I spend my days in constant pain, in a small, dark room. I can tolerate very little light and sound. My husband cares for me, but because I am so ill, we can't share a room anymore. My kids and parents live less than hour away, but they won't have anything to do with me because they are too busy. I'm 49, and my life is over. I also have CPTSD and live with constant flashbacks, but I'm unable to see a therapist because I can't talk for more than a couple minutes at a time. I desperately want to end my life, but the people who never come visit me tell me it's wrong to want that. I am suffering. I was an avid hiker, always in the sun, and now I haven't seen the sun in over two years. I want to die because this is not living. Sadly, I live in the USA, in New Mexico, so it's not an option.

if euthanasia is murder then why is capital punishment okay? if someone wants to die I support their choice. we never know if we will be suffering one day. My grandfather had to suffer through a long, painful and (to him) humiliating process of dying in hospice care because there were no "right to die" laws in our state. He wouldn't let hardly anyone see him or talk to him right up until he passed away. He was embarrassed about dying, felt there was no dignity in just "letting life take it's course". I can't help but think he would have died at least a little happier knowing *he* had the final say, the last laugh.
My heart goes out to anyone faced with such a decision... Where there's so much pain and suffering that death is welcomed and anticipated. It really tears at my core.

I was asking the same thing. I find it funny that the government don't give a damn about US citizens when it comes to health care, education, and employment components that are essential for survival but don't make suicide a right. Like people should choose to die if they want to because some people don't deserve to suffer and endure more pain then they have to both physically and mentally. Majority of people can't even afford proper medical treatment I don't see why suicide can't be an option.
Mental illness can at least be alleviated or cured. Terminal illnesses are well...terminal.

I have treatment resistant depression and anxiety…been dealing with it for 15 yrs and tried multiple medications, therapy, ECT, self help, meditation, and eating healthy and exercising. None of those things even touch it. Hearing people say there’s hope like we’re cut from the same cloth is ignorant…for some relief never comes and you grow sick of fighting it. If I had the option available for an assisted death…I would go for it.

My mom died with Huntington's disease, and suffered for years! And it was the hardest thing to watch your mom deteriate and tell you every day that she's ready to die and go to heaven. She didn't want to be in pain anymore. But in NY we don't have that. If we did, she would of died years before she did at 54 😭 I miss her alot but I'm glad she's not suffering anymore

I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia at 26, they did get rid of my cancer but the side effects left me in chronic pain and fatigue. 29 now, I am no longer the same person I used to be, the pain is literally killing me everyday, I can barely leave my house. But when I talk to doctors that I want assisted suicide they tell me I am depressed and send me to a psych ward, as if I am not suffering enough. I feel so trapped, I lived a good fulfilling life, please just let me go in peace!

My grandfather died of ALS a few years ago. He was unable to eat and required a feeding tube to survive. One night his lungs failed and he would require another machine to breath for him. He denied that treatment so he wouldn't have to live that way anymore. It was his choice to go out, and not live that horrible existence.
My grandpa died of ALS too it didn’t get that bad tho he was able to walk and talk and then one day everything just started shutting down and he died soon after.
I have a chronic illness. It's going to do nothing but get worse. I am constantly in pain & now in a wheel chair. You can know what it's like until you live in my shoes. I don't want to live like this & want an assisted suicide option. I can't do this for 25 or 30 years...

This is exactly why religion shouldn’t be involved in politics.
So sick of the government trying to control people's lives. If they are so concerned about people's lives, then they should pay their rent, their medical bills, feed their families, pay their college tuition, etc. because that "control" behavior they think they have over people's lives is getting old. The same goes for religion. When any of those priests, pastors, rabbi, etc. pay for my sins, then they can have the right to dictate how I can live and/or end my life. What I do with my life is between me and God.
My mother & father died due to illnesses that were painful & depressing. Their quality of life was not improved just because the quantity was dragged out. They've been gone for 7 & 9 years, they're at peace, but their pain & suffering, the sad deaths they had, have been on my mind every single day since.

A couple weeks ago my uncle died of pancreatic cancer. From the time of his diagnosis till his death was about a year and a half. He had a lot of good quality time in that period, but the last month of his life and especially the last week or two were hellish. It was really tough on me since I was physically moving him around the house, dressing him, having to administer morphine and other medications (as a recovering addict nonetheless), and at one point he asked me how long the hospice nurse said that he had because he just wanted it to be over. It was the hardest thing I've ever had to tell anyone or hear. He was looking into doctor assisted suicide, and it would have spared all of us a lot of misery and trauma if that was an option for him. If someone wants to die and medical professionals have reviewed the case and deemed it a viable option then a person should have that right.

I've taken care of terminal patients as a Certified Nursing Assistant working as a HHA. I've had close family members die at home. Everyone should die with dignity and in the comfort of their chosen environment. My husband died in a hospital. He had a long fight with liver failure and cancer of the liver. I don't think that I would have been able to hold it together if he had chosen to die at home. Death came as a surprise to both of us and to the physicians. I thought he would be out of the hospital for Christmas since he had close calls around the holidays in the past, but he always pulled through. He went into the hospital for the fourth and final time. I didn't get a chance to say goodbye. I'm looking towards the time we will be united in Heaven again. We have a lot of catching up to do. I hear there is no time gauged on the other side like there it is here. Eisabeth Kulbler Ross' book On Grief and Grieving was like a bible of truth that got me through my darkest moments. The more you love, the longer the grieving process. It will be six years for me on this widow's journey.

By making such a claim it just shows your intolerance towards a group of people as much as that group has a intolerance towards you, hence why we have hate and violence against one another. If someone is ready to call it quits thats that, the way she went with her friends and family around was a beautiful moment, crazy that this issue is even debated. definitely one of my fav videos from vice

It reminds me of my grandmother. She was hospitalized when she was 89 and was given morphine on a daily basis to deal with the pain she was in. She made it clear to my family and the doctors that she had lived a full life, that she had experienced all the things she could've wished for - and that at this point her biggest wish was to die peacefully and pain free. Her body wasn't giving up on it's own and she ended up spending several weeks in bed, hoping to finally get peace. But unfortunately assisted euthanasia isn't legal where I live. It's the "doctor's code" to keep the patient alive. We were actually planning to take her to the Netherlands to grant her her final wish - but fortunately she passed before it came into fruition.

I wrote a five page paper over this in my college writing class. What is really sad is so many people don’t even know this is an option. We should be fighting for this to be able to happen in the US. People shouldn’t have to die suffering.
I saw what cancer did to my mother last year she passed in august.29.2021 she suffered and to see a loved one go through with that is more cruel then letting them fall asleep and dying on their own terms. If I go through that I pray to God that my country will let me die in peace and not in pain suffering to the end.

Man that woman with the 3 kids and police officer husband got me tearing up....I just lost my mother to COVID 6 months ago she was only 53 she laid on life support for 28 days and all she could do is move her eye balls we tried everything possible to get her back but in the end we decided to let her go it was the hardest thing but what got me through it was knowing the suffering was over.
My grandmother had an assisted suicide recently and witnessing the pain and suffering she felt in her last days would make any person understand why people need to have the right to end their life in a safe and peaceful way.
