this song make me feel 20 Years younger and wilder i am waiting since ONCE for such Nightwish music, and Troy and his pipes are a massive ;) bonus, and i love how his music brings so much metalheads to teary eyes ! 10/10 on first listen is unique for me, specially for Nightwish "new" songs... they always grow on me
This thought just occurred to me. Could this song be about Marko? Friends, who were for a time, now grapes of sour wine. Lords of a single fly, still, I rue no island of shared solitude. You who glow in deepest woe let it be, retiree, the water's fine, sail carefree.
When writing that (first) part you mention Tuomas could have most likely had Marko in mind, however the song is definitely NOT about Marko. The song speaks of a lonely mariner who sets sail on a sea filled with islands. All this islands represent the different experiences, emotions, relationships and adventures that encompass the life of us, humans. Certainly, the mariner finds the memories of those friends he made along the way on a particular island. Those who bring him happy memories and those who bring painful memories, either way he sees them with nostalgia and doesn't regret having lived that. Tuomas probably thought of Tarja or Marko here, but is a pretty general idea about those past friends and relationships of our lives. The mariner on a "ship with a one-man crew" who sets sail with a "one-way ticket" is a metaphore of ourselves. We are the mariners who set sail through our lives with a one way ticket that ends in death. It is a metaphore of our mortality. He also mentions a "starbound quay" that the mariner seeks endlessly. That probably means the ultimate goal that we pursue blindly without even knowing what it is, probably never even find out, but it keeps calling us...the purpose of life. I think this metaphore aligns perfectly with the song Something Whispered Follow Me.
Tuomas said this song is about people we meet along the way in life, each person represent a island.. and the one steering the ship, Tuomas, or maybe you.. it could be your story right, but Tuomas proberly did write it as him steering the ship. feel some imaginarium vibes here, also some melody parts reminds a bit if the NW song Sahara, and the part singing Mad despair is very Scaretale.. i do think its a great song, i didnt catch it at first listen, i was also pretty tired, maybe thats why, but now i get on a journey with it, sailing this ship.. love it!!
A mariner under a sky moonlit on an island of a crewless ship, a few decades of immortality ahead, a one-man crew for a one-way trip. Islands, islands everywhere, I keep my range with crowded sails. My waves, they kiss every shore I land, steep cliffs will mock my waving hand. Islanders, villagers, universal mariners calling me, guiding me, monsters far beneath, hurricanes on the way, lunatic weathervanes, shipwrecked lovers on a faraway cay. Passing by butterflies, fluttering for a day, jokers, jesters, goddesses, hominidae, deep delicious blue beneath, I'll steer wherever tomorrow is near. Light a beacon so I can navigate through the tempest, through the madness. Light a homefire for the sad man with a begging hand, light a beacon so I can navigate through the tempest following the quintet. Ride on the highest wave, bring me to life, to them who dance in the daylight. Sail and seek the starbound quay, calling you, calling me to be a part of your story. Here raining ash to cover the dead, an island of the past wrecks, of you, of the endless sundown. Hemlock meadows, deepest quicksand, empty harbor by a wasteland. Mirrors, mirrors, everywhere for you of mad despair. Friends, who were for a time, now grapes of sour wine. Lords of a single fly, still, I rue no island of shared solitude. You who glow in deepest woe let it be, retiree, the water's fine, sail carefree. Sail and seek the starbound quay, calling you, calling me to be a part of your story on these strange islands.
Lanternlight is still the 3rd single (with full MV) and comes out on the 20th (you should have it upcoming in your subs now). I think they just pushed this lyric video early to help build the momentum. This is also definitely my favourite of the 3 songs released so far - amazing journey - love Floor's delivery, especially getting the chance for some proper belting in the chorus. Master Passion Greed is surely heavier! But agree it was great to have the chunky metal sections in addition to the more melodic more typical (for NW) sections - and then the final reprise on the pipes is so reminiscent of the Moors section of All the works of nature....so beautiful
Banging! They were a bit more careful with yt compression problems. Crunchy guitar. Tuomas déjà vu themes. Did you catch the shout outs? "The Butterfly Effect"? A Mariner under a sky Moonlit [GLS?] "The Islander" A "Siren"? Decades, make them matter. [Endlessness] A painter, on the shore. [Storytime] Where the cliff greets the sea... [Élan] "Not Waving but Drowning" is a poem by Stevie Smith. More Metal, nicely heavy! The spelling to amuse the Americans, Cay, Quay. Jokers, jesters [Raving harlequins, gigantic toys?] "Bring Me to Life"! [For the Reactors!] Dancing, in the daylight [Dancing in the dark?] Never Ending Story? Some much going on, information overload. Second movement... Ominous horns. Set the Dolphins free. Raining ash [Pompeii?] "An island of past wrecks"; The Antikythera Mechanism (the next track). Endless sundown [Sleeping Sun] Meadows [Of Heaven] "Black Mirror", everywhere. "Mad despair" [Scaretale] "Lords of a single fly" [Lord of the Flies, William Golding] Another drop. Third movement. "Let it be", [The Beatles?] Sail and seek... Floor soaring high. The bass and stop-motion. As John Wick *once* said: "Yeah, I think I'm back!" That was chunky and crunchy... Fourth movement. Another drop, Troy and the Uilleann Pipes. "Titanic" vibes.
Tuomas really challenging Floor in this one and im sure many other songs on the album as he should .....its damn Floor . As much ss i LOVE Troys pipes at the end .....i wish it was Floor singing us out with a swelling choir behind her .
Great track! This will be an absolute banger live, if and when they get around to touring again. Yeah, I believe the initial plan was to have just the three singles with music videos. I think this was a surprise. Tuomas indicated the other tracks without music videos would also get lyric videos, but he didn't know when.
Great and positive reaction! (the sound of the clip unfortunately too soft) The butterflies somehow make me think of Avantasia, "Kill the pain away" ua-cam.com/video/dj50YIwoFLc/v-deo.html
