A technically difficult song can impress if well played, but when an artist can meld it with his own personality and style, and come out with something that's freakin' amazing, I just sit back & enjoy the ride. Jaco and Marcus could each play the alphabet song and make it gooooooood. What the musician brings to a song is every bit as important as the composition itself. Marcus DEFINITELY brought it!
I don't really know what to say... This video should be mandatory viewing for every human. Maybe it's just me, but god damn. This song will be a jazz standard forever.
This is my favorite version of TT since the original; MM actually did something unique and new with this 32 year-old song. Part of me wants to never pick up a bass again, and part of me wants to never put it away again.
Dude playing teen town is out of control in it's own regard but marcus is freaking slapping the whole thing! That's an extremely hard song to keep time on for the drums too, he's awesome!
that's amazing. jaco's song, with marcus' style, now that someting else. if you ever get to see marcus live, it's something you'll never forget. it's just too bad he didn't play this when i saw him!
Just look at his facial expressions when it kicks off. It’s of pure confidence and authority over an extremely complex piece. Jaco played drums on the album version too I think. His fluidity on fretless is pretty much stunning.
Comparing musicians' "greatness" is a fool's game. It's obvious both Jaco and Marcus are highly acclaimed artists in music. It's also obvious that for whatever reason, they focused on vastly different playing techniques and styles. And there's nothing wrong with making observations about the strengths and peculiarities of different techniques. So take a chill pill and relax kids. I've admired & listened to both since their careers started - which is longer than many of you have been breathing.
one day you fall on this video, and you ask yourself : hum, Marcus usually slap, he's not gonna slap teen town ? then at 0:45'' you take the answer in the face and in the ears !! WOOOOOOW he did
Walked into a retail store today and saw Marcus' face across 10 different TV's. It was actually a Clapton DVD and all day ive wanted to listen to him (Marcus). Now I have, thank you!
Met Marcus long ago when he was playing with Lenny White at the El Mocombo. Sitting on an old-fashioned radiator just practicing his bass unplugged and alone outside the extremely 'cloudy' (cough, cough!), dressing room- he was the nicest guy, friendly, more than happy to answer questions, maybe in his late teens. We talked for about ten minutes. I'm sure that if I had asked to borrow Nick Moroch's guitar, Marcus would have been happy to jam with me!
Thing i love about this video and the thing that some people don't understand is that Marcus Miller has his own style and take on things so when he does a cover he does it his own way. Prob doesn't mean that he doesn't disrespect the artist he is covering or whatever. So why give the negative comments on this video. If you play music in your own unique way i have loadsa respect for that. If he was doin a generic copy then i wouldn't have as much respect for them cause its already been done.
Marcus is every bit a master of bass that Jaco was -just a focus on different techniques. If you study Marcus' career - you will find that he, like Clark and Wooten have mastered more techniques than just about anybody. And with Teen Town, you get the sense Marcus could rapid fire notes easily all day long - where Jaco would struggle to nail down the same sequence with fingering over time. While slap/pluck sounds different,it also has some advantages- it's easier to render complex passages.
Yes! Another True Master of the Bass Guitar :D I Love the way he puts that little "bend" on the notes! So funky! Amazing indeed :D His Bass playing has influenced me as a drummer and how to play the kick along with the bass player :D
You're absolutely right: It's very difficult either way. The way Jaco played it was hardly any easier but to slap the daylight out that bass requires a lightning fast thumb!
Marcus Miller is such an evil mastermind behind his bass. I bet he could mind control the entire planet with his lines! (All of this was meant as a compliment)
I don't know who you study in this field or how good they are envika...but slap is a very funky yet soulful technique.A way of playing deriving from a soulful black heritage and deserves upmost respect. Those able to master it are truly accomplished players.
Dude, this song is so hard to play the original way with fingers. I cant believe hes slapping it! this is a masterpiece, all my classmates listens to deathcore and heavy stuff and im into this stuff so im kinda "offstream" but what the hell its so funky!

I love Marcus Miller's rendition of Teen Town. His slap riff in the beginning adds so much intensity and edginess to the song.
Marcus is one of the only cats who can pull off covering Jaco and sounding totally original while doing it. Nice !!
can't ever...ever imagine myself ever playing like this.
ralexlu You will!

marcus is one of the best bassists ever.
many bass players are not able to play it with fingers, Marcus plays it on slap...
many bass players are not maybe that interested !
lol as if slap was hard
@@joaot8253 yes but this specific song is hard to play using slap bass frankly because of its speed and technique required
Yeah but hes also playing it on a fretted bass...
@@zombieds bro shut up, try to play it yourself, then we're talking
that drummer is soooo good, smooth and all
My man Marcus embellished on this tune, and made it come alive
I cant stop listening to this.
Good grief...wow...truly a salute to Jaco and Mr. Miller's incredible talent...
Dude playing teen town is out of control in it's own regard but marcus is freaking slapping the whole thing! That's an extremely hard song to keep time on for the drums too, he's awesome!
Dude... He did an amazing job. Slap in this song is really hard. Marcus is for sure, one of the best bass players of the world. killer!
Guud Gawd!!!!! That tone is Monster Millers's signature sound. Love it!
OMG the slides by the end!
LOVE marcus miller!
I just love him for his style and his enormous musicality. ❤
Man, this cooks! I like hearing the guitar and bass playing the lines in unison.
C.G.T. Ukiah, CA
Marcus Miller just sat down on that groove. Wow, that's some killer playing...
that's amazing. jaco's song, with marcus' style, now that someting else.
if you ever get to see marcus live, it's something you'll never forget. it's just too bad he didn't play this when i saw him!
Don't agree with the negative comments - it's a great tribute from one great bass player to another - Marcus has just funked it up a bit. Brilliant!
Just look at his facial expressions when it kicks off. It’s of pure confidence and authority over an extremely complex piece.
Jaco played drums on the album version too I think.
His fluidity on fretless is pretty much stunning.
His groove is amazing..I wish I had that sound slapping
that drumer is in the zone!

This is a great version of this song.

Every time i watch and listen to this i wanna grab my bass and play like this! :)
ultimate version for Teen Town
Awesome rendition by Marcus, great stuff!
All great musicians, but Marcus Miller is the best!! Five stars immediatly!
Walked into a retail store today and saw Marcus' face across 10 different TV's. It was actually a Clapton DVD and all day ive wanted to listen to him (Marcus). Now I have, thank you!
The thing that makes this so amazing is that he's not double thumping...damn that's some fast single-thump-slap-bass!!!
Best cover of teen town I've ever heard.
Again marcus shows why he is the man. That song is very difficult slapping it. Please post the rest of it.
marcus is a cool cat!
he is amazing

JoeSzilagy/ aka: Joe Slant That’s awesome.
A legend playing another legends tune! And i love it!
I dig that he is doing one of Jaco's most famous tunes but adding his own Marcus Miller vibe to it. Thanks for posting this one and God Bless!
yeah This is The MasterPiece That Theme ! ! ! ! !
marcus is the classiest PIMP ever
Rafael Freitas Ha! Yes.
i replayed :46 so many times
This is why I like UA-cam. All the friendly responses. Man, I can just feel the love...
one of my fav clips on youtube
This is so amazing. Playing Jaco's peace but putting the Miller-Sound to it :D

The timing of the band is so spot on here, it gives me shivers every time
Marcus is the man!!
This is truly smokin' ~ ~ ~ ~ !!! Go Marcus the man - Brilliant version!
amazing
Marcus has the best tone out of any bassist ive ever listened to.
Nice version. Always good when someone puts a new slant on something. There is no point in copying.
Simply amazing! The monster slpa bass part is really awesome!!!
This...Is...Just...Crazy....Good!!!!!
Mitico,Grande,Maestro: Questo è Marcus
man, he makes it sound better
nothing beats the original song but this is A W S O M E !!!!!!!!!
WOW!!! Now that was just Outstanding!! I Loved the Slapping & Popping to Jaco's tune!
this is best sound ever.
Jaco would be proud of this version.
GRANDIOSO !!!
Incredible....
This is killer!!! I didnt know he was finna slap it out!! VERY GOOD JOB!! I usually dont like Marcus Miller. But I like what he did here.

Right on, this is the kind of "day job" I want, even though it' usually at night!
This is truly GREAT! Playing a song of pastorius and than combined with his slap skills it's like wow! ;D
I'm startin to dig this. ;]
My eyes widened as I first got a feel of that tempo in the beginning. Marcus' cover is faster than Jaco's, and Jaco's is hard for me to play!
This totally changed my perception of bass guitar
agreed. the best cover.
Whenever I start thinking I'm "good" at bass, I come back to this video
とにかく無駄がなくて、余裕を持った分でグルーブする。マーカスは機械ではなく人が弾いてる事を教えてくれる。
Yes! Another True Master of the Bass Guitar :D I Love the way he puts that little "bend" on the notes! So funky! Amazing indeed :D His Bass playing has influenced me as a drummer and how to play the kick along with the bass player :D
i love it including the slapping, it underlines the hardness of the song

Why is everyone hatin on marcus for.....dude killed on imo, its all about the music ppl chill.....
Funkiest man alive today!
I absolutely LOVE the subtle transition from 1:13 - 1:16. The rest speaks for itself ...
that is just badass right there
Marcus Miller is such an evil mastermind behind his bass. I bet he could mind control the entire planet with his lines!
(All of this was meant as a compliment)
This is a great version, wish it was a longer clip! Always liked Marcus Miller
I don't know who you study in this field or how good they are envika...but slap is a very funky yet soulful technique.A way of playing deriving from a soulful black heritage and deserves upmost respect. Those able to master it are truly accomplished players.
@jazzbass981 Yeah, Marcus takes it to another level. Matches Jaco's speed but adds power to it. Best version I've personally heard.
This song gets into such a Sweet A groove.
This is so good!!
marcus rocked the shit out of this .. with this thumb even which is way harder
What a great version!
again Marcus's skills impress me
That was sick. Never heard it slapped before, but I'm a believer.
I am so jealous of Marcus's chops.
This is the ultimate flex.
woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow! amaizing
wow that's awesome
Marcus” tone is absolute perfection
exelente version de marcus... es un gueeevo... que sabor
Dude, this song is so hard to play the original way with fingers. I cant believe hes slapping it! this is a masterpiece, all my classmates listens to deathcore and heavy stuff and im into this stuff so im kinda "offstream" but what the hell its so funky!
Dean Brown. Awesome guy, I saw him live with Marcus back in 2005 :-)
this is brilliant.
saudade grande de Jaco............
i want a bass like that. ^_^.
