An Australian would NEVER not stop to help someone else if they were in need. We have a really strong spirit of 'we're all in this together' and 'what goes around, comes around'. I help someone, they help someone else, and so on. We never expect anything in return for helping a stranger.

Ditto. I'm a fat old lady. (ok, I'm 40 but no one stopping cause I look hot).
If I get a flat, I just stand by my car looking helpless. Some man always stops and changes it for me.
Last time was a dude in a full on suit. Pants, jacket, fancy shoes, fancy tie... fancy car. He stopped and changed my tyre for me.
Yes, I am appropriately thankful. No, I don't feel guilty for wanting a man to stop and change it for me. I ain't no man hating feminist. I'll let them do their male thing and take care of me. I'll make sure they know I appreciate it (cause I should. Men are awesome).
Before someone accuses me of being sexist - which I am - with double standards (which I don't have) I am the one who cleaned my brothers (single father) house before his last rental inspection. He works 60 hours a week. I work 30 due to my health. It was me he called and not my others brothers. Which was absolutely fine. We all got our rolls. Mine is not to change tyres. if other chicks want to do it, cool. No issue with that. All power to them. I will continue to look helpless til a man stops to help me.

@@MsAussieSheila hey ms Aussie. I’m a 51 year old slim fit cougar(?). Nah. In my dreams (re cougar). But still. Nothing wrong with hoping a good looking guy changes your tyre.
Let me just say, there are many many many men that can’t do that.
Funny part of my last tyre change was this good looking 30 something did a block, walked for some, to help me change my tyre. By the time he got there, I was almost done. He then sheepishly admitted he didn’t know how to change one and asked me to teach him. 🤣
Chivalry, even misplaced, is still alive. Never knock that stuff down. Nothing better than a man that can fix stuff. That wants to offer help. And protection.
I may be independent. Strong. And definitely not helpless. But having a man take the reins.

(and yes, if they need help with something traditionally done by women, they ring me first. Not a problem).
      :D
Lots of good men in the world. Especially the ones who put up my blinds and change my tyres.z
(tbf, dad did make sure I CAN change a tyre. And my brothers can clean. The married ones do. It is only the single father who sometimes needs help and that is long hours, single dad thing, not a "I refuse to do" thing.
My brothers are better at doing traditional female things than I am at traditional male things... I spent all of my 20's and a good chunk of my 30's in hospital so they kind of got used to taking care of me... I did try to put some blindds up the other day. It didn't go well. My chippie brother appreciates I tried... but was also somewhat annoyed cause he now has to fix that there is multiple stripped screws he has to deal with before he puts the blinds up properly).

      3. I disagree. We don't THINK of it as being particularly nice or generous, but most of us lend a hand where we see it is needed. Have helped people push cars more times than I could count. When we were school boys we pushed someones VW beetle through a set of lights so she could clutch start, and when she drove off the rear bumper came off in our hands. She didn't even stop, so we were left in the middle of a busy intersection holding a chrome bumper.

In Australia it's not a question of why people stop to help, but why some don't, and the answer to that is usually one of three reasons:
    1. Some people just don't know what to do, so they do nothing because they don't want to inadvertently do the wrong thing and make the situation worse for anyone.
    2. Some people aren't in a position to help - no one is going to expect someone that is pregnant, disabled, or elderly to push a car around, nor will anyone ever think leaving small kids in a car whilst the parent gets out to help someone is a good idea.
    3. They've noticed that other people are already moving in to help and they realise that stopping to help as well isn't really going to add any value to the situation.
Everyone that doesn't fall into at least one these categories usually will stop to help someone in trouble.

Growing up this kind of thing was what I interpreted as being part of a democracy: egality. Couldn't care less if someone is uber-wealthy or has a particular job or skin colour...it's one for all and all for one. It never occurred to me that there was any population group who wouldn't help someone - whether in tiny or humungous ways. Since watching Reactors from the US I've come to realise that people from the USA are fearful about so many things - but it gobsmacked me to discover that they are fearful of each other. To the extent that they could see someone in need of help and drive on by!!
The thing is that Oz isn't the only country who does this...in every place I've ever lived (including China) the kindness of strangers whenever I've found myself in trouble has been what got me through. I guess I've always just thought that this was a human trait - looking out for other people in trouble. If it isn't the same over there then it gives a little more insight as to why so many people carry/use guns. If every stranger you see is a threat, then I can see how one would be fearful 24/7!!
I think this is one of the saddest things I've ever heard about a population - being afraid of their own kind - to the extent that every stranger is a potential threat. I mean I'm sure there are millions of kind strangers in the USA too, but to live in a society which doesn't acknowledge, and drum in some kind of duty of care to fellow-citizens sounds really scary - and a little dystopian.

I heard of a situation somewhere in the USA where a homeowner put a lifelike man doll hanging off the side of his roof and laid a ladder down on the ground underneath it. So, it looked like the guy was working on his roof and the ladder fell. A neighbour saw this guy hanging and instead of walking over the road and picking the ladder up to help the guy out they called the police and had the police attend instead. That's just wild to me but that's the mentality over there.

I think it comes from Australia being so isolated as in we do not share a border with any other country, we are sparsely populated and natural disasters are a regular thing here - each summer there are bushfires, every winter there are floods. Only the other day my battery died and I flagged down a passing car (I had been parked for a while on the side of the road and flattened the battery) and asked if he could quickly give me a jump start - I had the jumper cables in the boot. Not a problem and 5 mins later I am back on my way.

It was 2000's when I blew a radiator hose at 2 in the morning.
I was under the hood, checking things out with a shitty torch and waiting for things to cool down when a black van pulled up and the members of a touring death metal band piled out to help.
Nicest lads you ever met, one was a mechanic when he wasn't being a death metal guitarist.
Halogen lamps came out, pipe was temporarily repaired with heavy duty heat resistant tape, water and coolant was topped up.
They had just finished a gig and were going to sleep rough in the van, so I invited them back to my place nearby, fired up the barbie and served up burgers and beers and chucked some air mattresses on the floor for them to sleep the night.
I got up in the morning at 9 and they had cleaned up, done the dishes, cleaned the barbie and gone out for supplies and were cooking up a big breakfast for us all.
Turned out they had a few gigs in town over the next week, so I welcomed them to stay if they wanted.

It's amazing how much friendlier & laid back a society can be in the absence of a bill of rights & rampant gun posession 😉 It's not uncommon to look around & see random acts of kindness here both on & off the road, from giving up a seat to an elderly person to stopping a robbery. Obviously we still have our fair share of wankers, like anywhere, but they're pretty quickly shut down if they're seen causing a nuisance. a glut of guns seems to just makes for a fearful society, not a protected one. Australia has its share of issues but it doesn't include the threat (and fear) of being shot always hanging over our heads. Interestingly, the U.S. and Australian paths regarding gun ownership were similar till the latter half of the 1800s when it was deemed that Australians in cities (as distinct from the country or outback) didn't need to have guns and laws came into force to keep it that way.

Whilst some (intersection) traffic lights have a right-hand turn arrow, this isn't required as we can make a right-hand turn (when safe to do so) on any green light. One that does throw many visitors (including Aussies) is the "right-hand hook turn" in Melbourne - which is designed to allow trams a clear pathway along their route.
The old lady with the walking frame crossing the road at the traffic lights (which is near my house) was most likely going from the nursing home (on the left of screen) to the shops across the road from the retirement centre.

The US is like most countries that are excessively religious - lots of dishonesty, and lots of distrust. Traveling in some parts of the US can be frightening. The American culture teaches that aggression and clawing your way through life any way you can is how to succeed in life. Unfortunately those without a moral compass interpret that as take whatever you can get any way you can get it.
But Australia is like most mostly secular countries like in Scandinavia. People are mostly friendly and helpful. Part of it is due to the historic bush culture. Once you get into semi arid, arid, or just very isolated areas people depend on each other for survival and this behavior has translated into the general Australian culture. Scandinavia is similar, except that for them it is survival in the snow and ice instead of the desert.
Australia has its share of A h*les, but the average Aussie thinks nothing of lending a hand when it is needed. It is normal.

agree, the majority of Australian's don't consider themselves religious. Therefore they care about their fellow humans in all their foibles rather than hanging people who are different out to dry. We still have a long way to go, but we are headed in the right direction. From what we read about the USA, so many so called 'Christian' bigots are out to legislate against rights for minorities as much as possible. Just take the amount of anti-abortion and anti-trans bills that have passed in the past 12 months. It's abhorrent to kick the vulnerable when they are down.

That is not to be confused with people who call themselves christian then fail to live as a christian is commanded to. One day we came across a car where a lady was sheltering with her newborn baby because they had run out of fuel. Her husband had walked to the nearest town with a jerrycan which was still a 15 minute drive. We drove off to find him and picked him up just outside of town on his way back carrying a huge can of petrol in 35 degree Celsius heat (95 degrees Fahrenheit). However, as a car driver without a motorcycle Licence, if you lose your car driving license for DUI you can still go and apply for a leaner permit to learn to ride a motorcycle, there by being able to ride (never actually applying for your full licence). I was told many years ago it was a loop hole here in Oz also.

5:36 i was towing a car float a couple of weeks ago and a bloke drove up and let me know one of the ramps had come loose and was sliding out, thanks mate, that saved a potentially embarrassing moment. I repaid the favour when an elderly woman started leaving a shopping centre with her hatch back open, i yelled until she stopped then closed it for her.

I’ve had people help me fix a flat tyre, remove an enormous huntsman (I’m the most arachnophobic person in Australia) and replace spark plugs for free. In the case of the spider a car was following me beeping and flashing its lights until I noticed and then signalled to me to pull over. It was a very out of the way road and I never once thought they meant me harm. If I was in the US I’d probably be super paranoid, which is a shame. We’re lucky to be as safe as we are…in MOST of the country.

just to add on a comment in regards to the Possum, in Australia it's quite common for native species that are nocturnal like possums to have babies in their pouches because our marsupials are live young critters - even if it looks like it's definitely beyond saving, you should always check the pouch of a marsupial and if you find a weaning baby, call WIRES (our wildlife protection agency).

The US has opossums, we have possums, very different animals. I've heard that the opossum is a rather aggressive animal. The possum is native to Australia, very cute and mostly herbivores that can be tamed.

Our possums take their name from the American opossum (as in continents of, not states) opossums are the last nonAustralasian marsupials. They have to be tough and mean to survive amongst the dominant placentals, who outbreed them so easily.

  • @WendyKay84
    @WendyKay84 Рік тому +2

Our possums are a little different to the opossums in the US, and not quite as rat-like. The common brushtail can be a little bit pesty because they like to make their homes in rooves and walls in the middle of suburbia. They're quite pervasive and they're territorial and VERY noisy when they fight in the middle of the night. They sound a little like the Ringwraiths of Mordor at their most excited, but they're still quite cute to look at, hehe. It's hard to tell in the headlights, but I think that was probably a baby brushtail on the road. On the other hand, there are several more species of native possum that are smaller, cuter and more vulnerable to predators, which have been hunted to near extinction by introduced feral cats.

A possum isn’t a big rat! A rat is a rodent. A possum is a marsupial native to our country and a protected species. We have two types. The small ringtail possums are social and hang in family groups. The larger brush tail possum hangs out on its own and they can be a little more vicious. We had one stuck in our drain pipe. Fire brigade had to come and cut open the pipe to get her out !

We get Brushtails at our school sometimes, our older students are pretty good at just leaving the poor things alone (or they'll tell a teacher so we can shoo kids away), the younger kids always take a bit of time to get used to them. They're sweet little things (the possums, I mean.)

I'm an Aussie. When I was in San Francisco on a holiday I saw an old bloke in a wheelchair dragging himself along with one foot and nobody cared. I didn't even ask, just started pushing him along. He was a bit freeked out for a moment until I said "It's Ok mate, I gotcha." in my Aussie drawl and he just relaxed and I pushed him for a block or two. When we left him he had tears in his eyes, I don't think natives do that sort of thing in the USA, in the big cities anyway. In Australia its pretty commonplace, but don't imagine its because we are angels. It's just that you help the bloke in need, because one day that's you, it's just payin'-it-forward, or storing up good vibes if you prefer. We have all been saved one time or another by a passing Aussie.

Helping your mate, which could be anyone, is a major part of our society to the point where if someone could help a person but refuses to is basically shunned, but out bush it could mean life or death so if someone refuses help when it’s needed then that person would be better off leaving Australia (safer). It’s a big country in which big hearts are imperative.

What shocked me was that good hearted Canadians stopped and checked on us and gave us the water needed. I'll never look at the locals of the Atherton Tablelands region ever again like they are kind hearted people.

Possums in both the US and Australia are marsupials, not rodents. Outside the stores, the man sitting on the ground was homeless and the woman bought him a drink or food. Colourful police vehicles are generally highway patrols.

Food is expensive but the wages are good , minimum $37 p/hour but everyone earns lots more . Even aged pensioners receive about $1700 every two weeks plus they get everything at a reduced price . Possums in Australia are very cute & not at all like a rat. They are cute with little pink squashed noses, big ears & gorgeous big eyes. They will of course scratch you to pieces if you pick one up in its natural defense, but they are very pretty. Look up Australian Brush Tail possum, or the tiny Ring Tail possum.
