Our Cocky was a character, swore like a trooper, liked to tinker under cars and could imitate any animal. Every morning he gave the command to the cattle dog to bring in the cows for morning milking, then would call out ' where's my cup of tea.' I have fond memories playing hop scotch, with the cocky running over to steal the stones we used, each time we threw them, and swearing at us if we tried to stop him.

Ours was a little shit - would chew anything that looked remotely chewable, decimated our poor bamboo plant, chased the cats and dogs and chooks around, would sidle up to you all nice-like and then go for the toes, tell on us kids to our mum, yell about home and away being on and drink out of unattended coke cans/steal hats/eat doritos/jump on my head in particular. Loved him to bits and when we moved we had to rehome him to a farm where he settled with a pretty little sweetie.

We had two as pets. One was old as Mathuselah and would complain about dying. The other, though - plucky little shit decimated our bamboo plant. He'd get put in his enclosure now and then for misbehaving and it'd grow back over a few days, only to be gone and kept gone as soon as he got out. Also, forget about rubber around the windows, shoes left out or anything shaped like a zipper - little bugger would target anything he could get his beak in to. He also would take on the cats, chooks, dogs and other assorted wildlife that wandered onto the block.

There's a house near me where the owners keep their front garden immaculate. This includes a large pine like tree. The local cockys like to pull bunches of the pine needles off and then let them fall all messily over the front yard. They don't eat or use for nests. It's just a game to them and I'm sure they've deliberately chosen the property owner it would upset most. Naughty teenagers indeed.

Jeez, Ryan, you genuinely shocked me with that "Close the lid and turn the barbie on." You weren't serious, were you? You wouldn't torture & kill an animal just because you don't like it, would you?
All through my teenage years we had a snake that used to live under the piano. When a guy would bring me home after a first date I'd always offer them a drink. Their reaction to the snake when it came out to greet them would dictate whether there was ever a second date. The ones who treated it, as we did, as just a pet, were always Ozzies, but two American guys and one Greek guy leapt out the door yelling! We also had a Cockie who used to wait until the dog had got to the very bottom of the stairs from the front door...and then, imitating my mother, it would give a whistle and call the dog who'd turn around and climb the stairs again. Cockie never tired of this game, so the dog took to only using the back door!

Every time you talk about how dangerous it is for us down here in Aussie land, I remember the scene from the Diskworld series (read 'fourecks' as 'XXXX'):
Death held out a hand. I WANT, he said, A BOOK ABOUT THE DANGEROUS CREATURES OF FOURECKS-
Albert looked up and dived for cover, receiving only mild bruising because he had the foresight to curl into a ball.
After a while Death, his voice a little muffled, said: ALBERT, I WOULD BE SO GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD GIVE ME A HAND HERE.
Albert scrambled up and pulled at some of the huge volumes, finally dislodging enough of them for his master to clamber free.
HMM... Death picked up a book at random and read the cover. "DANGEROUS MAMMALS, REPTILES, AMPHIBIANS, BIRDS, FISH, JELLYFISH, INSECTS, SPIDERS, CRUSTACEANS, GRASSES, TREES, MOSSES, AND LICHENS OF TERROR INCOGNITA, " he read. His gaze moved down the spine. VOLUME 29C, he added. OH. PART THREE, I SEE.
He glanced up at the listening shelves. POSSIBLY IT WOULD BE SIMPLER IF I ASKED FOR A LIST OF THE HARMLESS CREATURES OF THE AFORESAID CONTINENT?
    They waited.
    IT WOULD APPEAR THAT-
"No, wait master. Here it comes."
Albert pointed to something white zigzagging lazily through the air. Finally Death reached up an caught the single sheet of paper.
He read it carefully and then turned it over briefly just in case anything was written on the other side.
"May I?" said Albert. Death handed him the paper.
"'Some of the sheep, '" Albert read aloud. "Oh, well. Maybe a week at the seaside'd be better, then."
WHAT AN INTRIGUING PLACE, said Death. SADDLE UP THE HORSE, ALBERT. I FEEL SURE I'M GOING TO BE NEEDED.

I'm guessing that's actually probably from the Qld floods, that had communities cut off by the roads that were flooded & covered in crocs. People are probably locals, watching & waiting to see if the vehicle is making it across with essential supplies for them, or even maybe evacuation of them after days, if not weeks of waiting. Was pretty widely reported about this stuff happening

Actually Steve would've been the first to talk about what happened. He also wouldn't have wanted anyone to hold a grudge against a species because of his actions. He swam up over the top of a stingray he didn't know was there, could happen to anyone. Just unlucky that had the barb gone in anywhere else, he'd have most likely been fine. Also nah, carpet python is harmless. He was just looking for a place to cool off. Kangaroos are known for jumping in dams when dogs are chasing them and when the dogs go in to get the roo, the roo will attempt to drown them. Roos can absolutely swim.

    • @DeepThought9999
      @DeepThought9999 4 місяці тому +3

You forgot the onions (preferably sauteéd) to go on top of the patty. The bun needs to be lightly toasted too, so it doesn’t go too soggy like the one that I had for lunch today. It broke up and fell onto the bag that I kept on my lap just in case. Delicious!

The huntsman spiders are the cousin of the tarantula spider. I’m terrified of those things cos of their size and how hairy they are. However, it the smaller ones that’ll kill you, such as the Funnel Web spider or the Redback spider. The funnel web spider is the top or 2nd top venomous spider in the world and can kill you in as little as 15 minutes. The redback comes in at 5th most venomous. Both of these spiders are common around the house and garden in eastern & central areas of Australia, including highly populated Sydney & Melbourne suburbs.

The Eastern Brown Snake is the 2nd most deadly snake in the world, and the Tiger snake is the 4th most deadly snake in the world. I live in Melbourne and have had encounters with both several times around the garden/driveway/road/porch/beach areas. These are snakes you do not want to mess with. They are highly venomous and the eastern brown snakes are the only snakes that can kill you in under 15mins, of which the first 13 minutes you will feel fine. The tiger snake takes up to 7 or 8 hours to kill you, during which paralysis takes place. Either way, you don’t want to be exposed to these snakes, particularly when you are alone. I have had to retreat 4 times in my lifetime from an Eastern brown snake, and twice from tiger snakes. They tend to be afraid of noise, so stomping loudly may scare them away from you, although you’re best to contact the local council ranger to come and collect them and take them away if possible.
