LCD display problems are quite common. Sometimes a can of freeze spray can save your hours of unnecessary troubleshooting as shown in this video. The TV shown in this video is a Sony KDL32L4000

@Knaeckebrotsaege It's good to hear that you have been able to fix them. Your method is the better way to go, since it does not include messing around with heat or other potentially damaging method.

@craxycadillac81 It could be a burnt out back light or a defective output transistor or transformer on the inverter board.

@GrantsPassTVRepairs I actually used thermal pads to fix this problem like the ones you get off IC chips. They are soft and squishy and hold the connection in place very well. I did this on a 46 inch Samsung and has not reverted back since.

It would be interesting to know, whether one can repair these problems without replacing the panel. As I understand, the ribbon cables are connected with a conductive glue or something, so maybe by applying heat and pressure you could reattach the cable. If your customer ends up scrapping the TV, you could try to play with it a little bit. Thanks for the video BTW! I've used your cold spray technique on a few occasion and didn't even have to take the back cover off to diagnose the set.

Hi Grant, Great Video as usual people always appreciate the way and manner you usually present these Videos..Thumbs up! I have a question for you. My Sharp LC-26DV20U shows but the colours seems to bleeding or too high but in any way it just does not look good but it plays and operate very well otherwise....I have been trying to locate a symptom on-line that I could point you too but I have not located one yet. I hope it's not panel but I only wants to open it to change a bad board, advice?

In reply to your first question replace the burnt resistor. Regarding the thin black lines sounds like a bad display.

You can easily rebond those strips.....its almost same as pager lcd repair got it down to where I could use sldiron with box end to adhere new or reglued cables...

First up, been watching Dave's videos for months, and he is the MAN! Take lessons Chuck Norris!
Errr, anyone able to have a quick look at the 40 second video on my channel (only one video there) showing my sick Samsung please?
I changed two blown caps and all was good for a month - then a flicker started followed by the screen going off for a minute or so, then the bloody thing works great for 5+ hours again. It cycle this pattern over and over.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Rodney.

No the tape carrier does not effect the sound. A shadow area could be from a bad lamp, bad driver transistor on the inverter board, possibly a bad inverter transformer, or even the display itself could have a problem. If I saw the picture I might be able to tell you more.

Real cool and thank you, I have a similar issues, my grandson hit the TV once dead center, he's only 4 but now I have like what you showed in the video only it doesn't jump it's steady.

Freeze spray and heat can cause the bonded contacts on the display to connect or disconnect due to expansion and contraction from temperature variations.

It sounds like a possible back light issue, not necessarily a bad capacitor. If your not inclined to have it repaired, most TV repair shops would probably like to salvage a few parts out of it.

my tv is a hdtv from 2008...i noticed alot of the things i do on it like play games or computer games and it will lag horribly on the tv screen yet it wont do it on a normal 60hz pc montior is this a sign that my tv is fixing to go bad?

What do you do when you have a resistor, which has been burned to a crisp, and the only way to fix the board is to have that resistor replaced? Also, black thin lines on a LCD monitor, is that a hardware fail or the screen has gone bad? Thanks!

  • @GrantsPassTVRepair

I suppose you could although I don't know if the residue from the air duster has more
of a water content which might make it more conductive.

@turnercarl When an electrical connection is cold it has less resistance but I'm not sure if this accounts for my freeze spray correcting the problem. I know when matter gets hot it expands and when it gets cold it tends to shrink so perhaps this slight movement has something to do with it.

@craxycadillac81 I doubt you can repair this kind of problem if it's the same as what I'm showing.
Some people have been able to repair problems like this by jaming rubber between the frame and the LCD display but it's probably a temporary repair.

Hi. I was given a nice Polaroid 32" LCD and all that was wrong was there was a shadow area that my son who gave me the set said was likely due to constant games usage. I had been told that it may be dust. After looking and finding nothing - Well ok for 2 mins then its a tartan pattern. Q: if it is the tape carrier connections at screen would this lose sound also?because if so will try to make a more pressured seal at edges. I wore grounding wristband and took care not to damage so is this it ?

I have a problem with a Phillips 50pfp5332d. It has sound but no picture. I shined a bright flashlight and doesn't look like there's any video at all or backlight. Any suggestions? I haven't cracked her open yet but I guess I will replace bulging leaking caps first off. No esr meter or anything. :(

Reminds me of a problem were the original gamboy's lcd gets lines on the screen and you have to apply pressure to the ribbon cable to fix it.

I have a 52" LCD I believe. Over the last couple of days my picture was very dark. Well today, there was an "explosion" like a bulb in the back. Now I have no picture and when I do turn the TV on, there is a loud, rapid ticking noise. What happened?

I have a AOC L26W861 TV that had a red vertical line a little off center on the screen. About a mouth ago the TV screen went black no picture. But when I plug it in to the wall socket a red light com on. I open the back and check the power supply board for AC & DC power with a analog meter and it shows good. I did a visual check of the capacitors and other items but couldn't find anything. I would appreciated any help you can give me.
    Thank You,
    Dick

I have an LCD Samsung LN46B640R3F. The Tv turns on, the sound plays, and I can see the picture, but at first there are black thin lines evenly spaced from bottom to top vertically. Then it slowly fades to green/black/orange colors that are veticle. I check the T-con board, main board, and inversion board. Help?

The freeze spray demonstration doesn't always work but the technique can be useful in determining where the problem is.

Instead of buying a very expensive can of freeze spray can't you just turn the air duster can upside down and use it that way? It freezes things well.
