Thank you for this video! the hair dryer brought my Toshiba 42hp82 back to life. now to get the new caps in. I will have to utilize the other tricks you have mentioned. Mike, you are a very wise man when it comes to tv's.
Dave I am a fellow repair tv repairman I have been in for over 20 years .I love what you are doing here I have thought of doing it my self .I use the freeze spray and hair dryer all the time .
@sombersolitude Sure you can use a multimeter, oscilloscope or frequency counter but sometimes I find my audio amp trick with an inductive loop is helpful to do quick checks with out having to touch my probes to the circuit. Sometimes I like to attach an inductive loop in series with a diode to my meter probes and quickly run the coil/inductive loop over my switching transformer because high frequency oscillations can't be heard with my audio amp.
@Luckypk001 Any amplifier should work. you can use an old stereo or some computer speakers with a built in amp. This only works with low frequency switching such as when the power supply is in the stand by mode. For the higher frequency switching such as when power supply is in the run position it's best to have a meter with a frequency counter. You can use a regular multimeter by attaching a coil in series with a diode across your meter probes and placing it near your switching transformer.
@jstrebe I still run across neon lights in old electronics gadgets. They often put them inside small switches to illuminate the switch. Sometimes you also find them in very old TVs as well. They can operate right off the 110 line but you need to use a resistor or it will blow up. If you don't have any luck finding one locally let me know and I can send you one.
@billspcclinic The numbers on a capacitor represent the amount of energy they can store and what voltage they can handle. What you see as a (uf) actually stands for microfarad. There is also an indication of the temperature they can handle. You can use Radio Shack capacitors if the capacitance and voltage is correct but I don't think they sell the high temperature capacitors which are often recommended. Often times you will see a 105 degrees on the cap. This is its temperature rating.
You need to figure out if your back light is working. Look through the rear ventilation holes on the TV and try to figure out of the back light is working. If it isn't I would check out your inverter board for any missing voltages or shorts.
This sort of thing is impossible to guess at, but since it seems to get better after warming up you might want to see if it comes on quicker in a warm room. If so this would suggest possible bad capacitors.
Symptoms such as you describe are difficult to figure out. In the process of using freeze spray it's possible you removed what's known as a solder whisker from the PC board but that's just a guess on my part.
@vigholate Oh yes, I have built several electronic gadgets. My first fascination with electronics was a crystal radio my uncle built me as a small boy. From there I soon found my self interested in Amateur radio. There is probably a Amateur radio club in just about every city. If you enjoy experimenting with electronics you might enjoy attending one of their meetings. Most hams are generally very helpful when they see someone interested in furthering their understanding of electronics.
@betto2017 It's hard to guess at a problem of this nature but I would check for bad solder connections using a times 10 high powered magnifying glass. I would also see if the problem is temperature related buy slightly warming the circuit boards using a hair dryer. This can often indicate a bad capacitor. Ideally you need to check your capacitors using an ESR cap tester.
@vicmanm010 I can't guess but it sounds as though the video signal isn't reaching the analog to digital converter. Make sure your not overlooking the simple things first like a bad cable or connection to the video input.
Your clips give me good ideas and helps at finding extra troubleshooting avenues. Thanks for your time. Note: Please try to improve the sound on your clips.
This fixed my problem, and I thank you very much. Polaroid(tm), should be ashamed for charging $275.00(us),for a $4.00 repair. 2 replaced caps. and my tv was like new.
Well, the problem came back with a loud screeching sound through the speakers. So, my guess was that I have a bad SMD cap on the main board. I decided to use my hot air station on low heat and a fine tip on the gun to focus on an even smaller area. When I hit a set of about six SMD caps clustered on the main board, the TV came on. I then applied freeze spray to that same area, and the TV shut off. Hopefully, I'll get this figured out in short order and not have to buy a replacement board.
@vicmanm010 I can't guarantee what the problem is but it sounds like a possible T-Con board problem. Did you check to see if there is power going to the T-con board? This board is very static sensitive so if you test is I suggest a ground wearing a ground strap.
Love what you are doing. I have a sony lcd and after about 1.5 hours of viewing 90% of the screen goes blank. I am 99% sure is its heat related. Can you give me any advice on what components are most likely to fail due to heat.
i enjoy your videos im leaving a comment nice job you explain things well maybe you can tell me whats wrong and how to fix a 50 inch Toshiba flat screen stays on for a while then gets a black screen but power lights still on and then you have to unplug it and wait twenty minutes before the picture works again thanks please respond
@vicmanm010 Is the sound working Okay? No one can guess at your problem with 100 percent certainty and doing voltage tests is the best place to start but I have heard of this symptom from the T-con board going bad amongst other possibilities. Dave
hey there, i really like your video, you do have some very interesting tips, i myself dabble in electronic repair and would like to learn as much as i possibly can about it. you seem like you know alot about electronics in general, do you ever build your own electronics? or work on other electronic devices? and if you make a course i would sign up. thanks.
hi your videos have been vary helpful, i know little about electronics and only work on my own electronics at home. my question is for a do-it-your salfer can i get caps at radio shack, and what do the numbers mean on the caps. thanks
@xxsurcentralxx Sadly the display on the new TVs often go bad. Color lines can also come from a bad ribbon cable or driver board but the driver board is permanently attached to the LCD display and very difficult to repair.
Howdy i really enjoy your videos do you know where i can get one of theses telephone amplifiers with suction cup and those neon bulbs ,Thanks Stereo services
well i took a look at it today, I took the back cover off. To see whats going on ,and to my eyes all the lights are working ? the blue lights / lcd lights look good the capacitors look good. but like you said you cant tell by the eye..,.i cant hear the volume.but are the lights your talkin about, are the ones im talkin about?if thats not the problem what could it be.....
Thanks for your advice but I don't think it's the inverter board. From what I understand, the inverter board powers the back lights, my lights aren't the problem, 90% of the screen goes black with white lines/shapes moving through it. The light stays on continuously.
@GrantsPassTVRepairs Interesting. This is the second Samsung I've encountered with similar issues. I've left the TV unplugged, left it plugged, stood on my head while plugging, but I can't get the TV to fail.
@GrantsPassTVRepairs Well I've checked everything and one thing I forgot to mention is that it doesn't show the menu screen either, just the blue screen.
I really like the fact that the new TVs are not as heavy as the older ones, but I find the older TV sets were far easier to work on because I trained on them for so many years. Now I'm having to learn so many new things. Dave's TV Grants Pass (541) 479-3915
Hi, Dave. I'm working on a Samsung LCD TV (LN46A630M1FXZA) that would turn on intermittently; it turned on recently by itself after the relays clicked about a dozen or so times. I narrowed the issue down to the main board, so I applied freeze spray (nothing happened) then heat from a hair dryer - TV turned on after heating one small area. I then tried freeze spray to reproduce the issue, but the TV continues to work normally now. Any ideas?
u kno ur videos are just gr8. but i wud like to tell u my prob. i have a SAMSUNG LCD and the problem is supposedly with the panel. the colors on the screen have gotten white. as in the colors on the screen hv just faded. is there ne way how i can fix my LCD
hey there prof.! do you have any idea what to do if my samsung plasma has one chime / one click & still wont turn on? capacitors look perfect, have checked them. thanks!
good video..i have a 40inch etec tv lcd..my problem is that the tv truns on, but cant see noting on the screen, cant see volume menu or the channels what could it be.please help
hi there m8 i have a sharp lcd tv when i swicth the tv on i get red half picture and sometimes i get other coulors how can i fix that or what board needs changing. thanks
Hi Mr Grant i enjoyed tva repair tip i love to buy the neon bulb and the other stuff and also the book i lives in Guyana South America but I can buy it with my bank card.If I get difficulty fixing a t.v. can i email you.Thank you sir
@PhatQ45TT1 I'm using the EDS-88A Cap Analyzer Made by Electronic Design Specialists. Their phone is 561 487-6103 I'm pretty happy with it and I especially like the tweezers style probes. I was told the Blue ESR Capacitor tester might be an equally good choice at about half the cost, and I suppose you could make your own tweezers for it. I hope to compare the blue ESR tester to my own one day. You will need to find their contact info on the internet. Dave
hi there i have a 32" lcd tv when i turn the tv on the screen comes on but i can not get anything on the screen and some times the screen flicker. how can i fix this. thanks
My LCD TV is not showing picture but theres sound and the screen comes on but shows nothing except the blue screen showing that its on. What can I do??
I think your sound-man in the mixing room is drunk on the job, not cutting out 60hz harmonics on the patche cords, and probably ungrounded too, Hire an specialty electrician. Also your sound man is under paid, or also doesn't understand the cardiod pattern to boom mikes. With him drooping you out of one lobe and into another, going loud soft. I would get with the executive producer, the director and also the head of cinematography and lead sound engineer to take out that 60 hz hum on stage and graininess of he film, so long expensive hours arent spent in the cutting room. Should be easy with some copper to grounding blocks at each input. The main engineer and you should have a chat about retraining vs, redundancy of subpar film crew. You should only have about a crew of 30 (not counting support crew of 30 more for non cinematography) for a video production like this: if you want that golden youtube star. . Lighting is a bit lack luster cold and has hot spots, recommend a stand in dummy before each shot with a light meter, so you the star of the show just has to worry about acting and not sit for hours dialing in lights for warm/vs/cool and natural skin colors. SIMPLE!.
