Fitting a Fiamma Carry Bike 200 DJ on a Fiat Ducato Campervan

  • In the 2nd part of my Fiamma installs I fit the CarryBike 200 DJ to my Fiat Ducato campervan. This wasn't the most straightforward installation, mainly as the instructions are not the best, and mainly as I was installing this on my own and therefore it might have been better to get help before I started.

    Great video. BUT ...I would recommend spray painting the black square end brackets and clamps (on the end of the rails) before they rust - just after the guarantee runs out.

    I put a Fiamma bike rack on the T5 camper last week, which was a little more straight forward because it didn't involve drilling, thankfully. It just hangs off the top of the tailgate and clamps up to the bottom of the tailgate. It absolutely refused to go on though until I loosened every single bolt, and nipped them all up once it was on.

    Good work John. I have a bike rack on the back of my 67 plate Boxer and its a similar loading height. I find it works better as the bikes don't obscure the lights when loaded. I use a cheap collapsible foot stool when I load my bikes, makes it much easier to do.

    Thanks for sharing John, looking forward to seeing you fit the roof rack then climbing up on the roof to put something on it, hehe... go on please show us you climbing up the ladder, get your union jack leotard on, as we all know you have the physique of circuis trapezist. Go on John, Go on John...... hehe better get a safety net below. No seriously, only pulling your leg. I know lots of people put a box on the bike rack just to use it for extra storage rather than for a bikes. Cheers and best wishes and once again.

    Nice job - agree, that bike rack looks far too fiddly compared to the ladder fixing. I think the bike rack would be better with the same fixing bars as the ladder, would then give you an option for a lower bike rack which might be better for an e-bike - and also it would match the ladder too. Looks like if you get an e-bike you will want one with a removable battery - to save a bit of weight when lifting and to be able to have the battery safe in the van - especially when its on charge too.

    I fitted the same model rack to my Ducato. Didn't drill the door as those bolts are for security only, and once the rack is fitted no one knows they aren't there. Have travelled thousands of miles with bikes and it hasn't budged. The crappy helicopter tape has yellowed and started to peel though so I'm going to replace with some better stuff.

    Great vid. But just make you aware the bikes can only be used on the lower level if you use an add on lighting board otherwise your not legal as the bike wheels obscure the rear lights and indicators. Also would recommend a bike cover so bike does not get covered in road grime. It seems high but dont forget your only putting the tyres on the rail and then rotating the bike through 90deg to meet the frame. Once the initial arrangement of the crossbar arms are done the they stay in place and bikes just drop in and pull strap done. Once set up you can get your bike on or off in seconds . Have a play it soon becomes second nature. Good luck

    Would be good if they designed a combined ladder/bike carrier but still giving you access to open the doors. Does it add much in terms of weight allowance, the bike carrier, roof ladder and roof rack? plus the weight of any bikes, to the vehicle.

  • @MG-cp8xk
    @MG-cp8xk 4 роки тому +1

    I would also blank off deactivate the Door Release Button ( that opens the doors wider), as the bike rack will damage the rear light cluster (also be careful when positioning bikes, windbreaks etc )

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  4 роки тому +2

      Our van doesn’t do that anymore as the windows already impact the lights if the doors are opened wide. Those idiots at #autofail already messed up that 🤦🏼‍♂️

    Hi John & Mandy. About to do the same job. Do the plastic fastenings for the inside door cards come out easily and how did you remove them?

  • @simonbarlow7410
    @simonbarlow7410 4 роки тому +1

    Excellent vid again John. Something to ponder over.... with a bike or bikes on, you 'might' need to fit a trailer board or repeater lights as the OS rear light might be obscured by the bike wheels enough to be perceived as an issue (got caught by that on our Freelander). Looking forward to the roof rack install... (if you need a second pair of hands shout out)
    Cheers, Simon (CaravanChronicles)

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  4 роки тому

      The bike wheel doesn’t affect the lights, so it’s ok without the board 👍🏼

    Great video John although you would think they would design it so the two top rails fixed to the doors were fitted at the same height and match the colour if the end caps? OCD alert 🤓

    Thanks for the video!
    I know I won't buy this... I dunno if it's made to be loaded with doors opened, but if so, how do you get to the handle with bikes on anyway?

  • @markpeacock5485
    @markpeacock5485 4 роки тому +2

    Will the bikes not now obscure rear lights and indicators? If so you will by law unfortunately need one of those auxillary boards connected to electrics with rear lights and indicators. Thats even if you can see lights through bike wheels. Thats why the fitting is so high up, so you do not need one.
    Oops disregard other comments seem to say bikes dont obscure lights at all. Just looked like they would👍

    The video that keeps on giving! I have been wanting to buy this rack for the past four years and just bought it. It should be here in a few days. I will probably do it by myself as well. I do like the fact that it is up high. It makes it more difficult for thieves. I am tall so it will not be a problem anyway. Do you still have it and enjoy it?

  • @adventurevanfreddie
    @adventurevanfreddie 4 роки тому +1

    Are you going to fit a light-board to the bikes John? If not your bike wheels may obscure your rear lights as others have already mentioned. My home-made bike rack is quite high (roughly where your one was originally positioned) however it's simple enough to lift the bikes on and off. You know what the police can be like!

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  4 роки тому +1

      The number plate and van lights are not obstructed by any part of the bike or rack.

    Won’t the bikes obscure the rear lights in that position though? I agree about the lifting problem, I have a Fiamma rack on a T6 and lifting my EMTB onto it is a real strain on the back, even without the battery

    The scratch pads don’t work and rub through in 200miles.
    Have you seen my time lapse of my assembly? Claire gave me a hand to hang it. Also they don’t work on Sprinter/Crafters as the holding open magnets are in the way unless you want to take them off.
    I didn’t like the idea of drilling the doors so I’m relying on the fixings on the edge to hold it and the door magnet to keep it in place.

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  4 роки тому

      Your timelapse made me decide to tackle this, why do they make it so complicated?

      Gadget John on tour ummmm don’t make me say it on YT 😂
      Yeah it’s a fiamma product, might have something to do with the country of design 😂 that’s as far as I’m going with that.
      It’s not a bad product. It’s just the only one on the market for my van.

    Bit of a disaster. So bike wheels obscure your rear lights, especially on the drivers side. Will this rack take e-bikes? I'd be interested in the combined weight of the awning (20/25kg?), roof rack, ladder & bike rack?

    • @johnmandy
      @johnmandy  4 роки тому

      Why is it a disaster? The lights aren’t obscured by the bike when I tried it. Check the fiamma website out for tech specs 👍🏼

    I want to fit a twin bike rack like that and a slare wheel holder on the back doors. Could you mount a wheel at the top of your ladder and still get a bike on do you think?

    • @johnmandy

      I doubt the aluminium ladder would support the constant weight of a spare wheel.
