IF YOU HAVEN'T BOUGHT THIS RACK YET...
Know that you should get the Bones EX version of this rack (amzn.to/2WEokuI) which is better suited for cars with spoilers like this one. Otherwise, you'll have lots of weight on the spoiler and can only carry light bikes 3:14
The car in the video is a 2013 body style. I believe the body styles are similar up to 2017 or 2018.

Thank you for sharing the words of caution! This vid is very considerately made. You're still helping strangers years on 😁
I used the 3-bike rack for over four years on a daily basis. Very useful. Unfortunately, the friction of the upper strap on the spoiler finally cut it. I almost had a tragic accident, but lucky enough that nothing happened. So in the future, I will cover the strap with something softer to prevent the friction. I just found out that new Saris EX models have a "Guide" to prevent the friction with the spoiler...!
Thanks, I was worried about the spoiler breaking, not the straps. I'll be sure to cover the straps. I have a Prius-C, and the spoiler is not too big. The rack fits fine.
Thank you for doing this video. Your the only video I've found that actually shows putting the straps on (particularly the lower ones when you have to open the trunk to attach). Thank you so much!
So pleased to see that someone else also discovered design flaw in the "side" hooks in these Saris racks and damage to the lamps
*This was bought by the **Latest.Bike** rake , along with my daughter's mountain bike. it was very easy to put on her vehicle and works great.*
Thanks for the warning about the spoiler. I'll definitely spend the extra for the EX 3.
Be careful if you have an extended "spoiler" on your SUV. It's usually made of plastic and will bear some of the load from the straps and will crack.
Glad you said it's always gonna have some space on the top legs. I started driving and I noticed that and was like oh shii lol
Thank you, Dylan. I have a VW Golf, with similar spoiler and hatch. This is helpful, especially pointing out things to avoid.
And to follow up to this comment, still solid instructions. We've been heavily using our Saris rack and it's been perfect and non-damaging.
@@ABHORRANCE831 Thank you for adding this comment, I have a Golf too and I checked out this video to see how to put it on mine.
Thank you, Dylan. Glad I found your video. Very helpful!
very informative on possible breakages, thumbs up!
Thanks for the clue on the side straps. My CX-5 thanks you.
I'm using it on a Nissan rogue. If you hook the side straps *below* the light it keeps them from sliding into it and causing a crack.
nice tip about the lights.good job!
Wrap the ends with electrical tape, no scratches and it will hold secure more when you open the trunk. Also before I close the trunk I try to tight the ropes so they will not move and make scratches while closing
Thanks for this, just got mine and your video is very helpful and detailed.
I don’t think you should let the upper straps lie on the spoiler. Pull the truck rack upward the lower legs don’t need to be on the bumper. They should be on the tailgate lid in the reg plate well. Read the fitting guide on official site carefully.
Thank you. This helped us attach our Bones 3 to our Chevy Equinox. I appreciate it!
This same rack fits and works great on my Hyundai Elantra
thanks for the review. that rack is pooooorly designed. so many contact points that can scuff or scratch your car.
Thanks for the video , very helpful
Thanks a lot. I have the same car and I’m gonna use that same rack today for the first time. This was extremely helpful. You’re a saviour
How did it work out for you?
@@barrymonteiro8893 Excellent. I've been using it without any issue. Sometimes I drive 2-3 hours using it and works perfectly fine. I put some duct tape to protect the taillight.
Use Gorilla tape under and over those side straps to keep them from slipping down
Thank you! We have a CX-5 too. 😁👍
Very to the point and informative! Thank you!
Very informative. Thanks for the words of caution. Namaste.
Nice video. I'm looking to get one of these for my 08 subaru forester, doesn't have a spoiler so should be good to go.
Great video. Well explained! Thank you so much. 😊
Thank you! Your video is very helpful!!
Great info just ordered one ex3 hope this fits my mk8 Golf...
Thanks for the video. Do you have parking sensors and/or cameras? does having racks affect the operation of the sensors/camera?
I wish you would have shown how to load your bicycle onto this holder
This really helped! Thanks. Especially where the upper clips go.
Manual shows not to mount the straps on the bottom opening of the hatch but mount them on the bottom of the bumper
Can you link to this? According to the manuals I see online they clearly show the straps on the bottom of the hatch/trunk: www.saris.com/support/manuals
That being said, where you put the straps is very specific to your car, so if the bumper looks and feels more secure, go for it.
seems that the plastic pads on the sides could be magnetic just to "stick" to place you place them.
thanks for the honest video.
I wouldn't use that bike rack for my cx5
Thanks for sharing!
Excellent )) I'm more curious about the "All Wheel Drive". Any comments appreciated as i own the Front Wheel version .
This is a good tutorial. However, the instructions say very clearly to not open the trunk when the rack is installed.
Thank you very helpful.
I’m glad I have a hitch bike rack. Just get a hitch. Go to Uhaul it’s about $200.
So, are we going to ignore 4:18 ?
This was extremely helpful! Thank you so much!
Thank you for the tips about the weight and avoiding mounting near the rear lights. I have the same car. Curious though, what is your concern about exposing your license plate number? I see a lot of people doing that and always wondered why. Addresses aren't connected to plate numbers on any public database and people see your plate everyday when you drive and also throughout the video.
They can clone the numbers
A+ job 👍
Great upload……… made my decision to buy one myself much easier 👍
Thank you !!! :)
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you for this video! Do the bikes hit each other at all when driving?
Nice video, and Go Blue!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks so much!
Thanks man!
Hey Dylan, thanks for the tips. Any problems with the spoiler? (Racing bikes)
Would it be better to place side hooks below the lights?
As for the upper leg, perhaps one should lock it down after it's got weights?
I've tried the side hooks below the lights, but it doesn't fit as well and if you do that more weight is on the top straps. The way I did it distributes more weight onto the side straps which I prefer.
won't it pull on the spoiler?
Great video - thx!!
Thank you!
Very good video thank you. I was considering this for my new model cx-5 but there is no way i want to risk damaging back lights or top spoiler. Just wondering if you have now changed bike carrier for something better for your cx5 (really great car btw)
I still use this one, but sometimes I put the side clamps underneath the lights now and it seems to work a bit better. Also, I haven't tried it myself, but the Bones EX version of this rack (amzn.to/2WEokuI) is better suited for cars with spoilers like this one. Not sure if the side clamps are any better.
@@DylanKuperHarris thank you for your reply. Regarding the clips dropping down to lights, maybe use some stickable, rubber, like what is used on the underside of chairs and tables. This would hold the clips in place exactly where you need them. (Thats what i intend to do). 😎
Thank you
Great Video! Go Blue!!
I have the same model Saris Bones 2, and the only thing wrong with this application is that it interferes with the rear wiper, I disabled mine.
That's my main concern. I used it for my Ford Fusion but my main worry with my Escape is the rear wiper. What if it rains...I can avoid using the rear wiper but what if I hit it by mistake? Will I damage the wiper mechanism? Might have to fork out for a hitch.
I don't understand the license plate censorship blob. It's constantly moving.
Brother will this work on my Mazda 3 hatchback?
Probably. I've never found a sedan/hatchback/suv that I was unable to use this rack on. But as I described in the video spoilers could make the fit less than ideal.
Go Blue!
Thanks!
Good tutorial. Thanks. BTW, you don't have to blur your license plate #. what will anyone gonna do with it? It's not like it's social # or DOB. Plus, it's already visible to everyone when we drive around and park.
Do you leave it on when parked? I'd be scared it would be stolen
I leave it on sometimes if I plan to use it within the next few days or so. The middle and lower hooks would be difficult to remove without opening the trunk, so a thief would likely have to cut some straps to steal it, rendering the bike rack effectively useless.
I wouldn't worry about it too much if the hooks are hard to remove on your vehicle. But even if they were, I'd guess bike racks aren't a high theft item.
Actually replacement straps are available on Saris site and they're inexpensive. I'd also be concerned someone would damage the car trying to steal it. Just take it off. It's easy as demonstrated : )
thanks a lot appreciate it very much
Thanks!!!
Hi Dylan, I've got a Mazda 5 MPV sport with a spoiler like yours and bought the bones 3 so mine has 2 top legs instead of one. Mine is a 3 bike rack and if I put my mountain bike (14.6kg)on it pulls both legs off the back window. Surely that cannot be right. I cannot imagine putting 3 bikes on it. The only way I can avoid it is too lift the rack higher up so the feet are near the licence plate and the top feet are under the spoiler but it insists on the instruction from saris this is a bumper mounted rack. I'm confused 🤷🏻♂️
You probably need to get the Bones 3 EX then (amzn.to/2WEokuI). That rack is better suited for the spoilers, so you can tighten it so it is closer to touching the back window and everything is more supported. If you try to tighten the normal Bones rack a lot on the mazda with a spoiler like this, I'd be worried that the spoiler could break because it's holding so much of the weight.
@@DylanKuperHarris I ended up buying a roof rack and putting on the thule 598 carrier. But as my car is a Mazda MPV it sits a bit higher in the air but at least I can get full access to my boot now 👍🏻
Scared about pressure on back window/glass. When on bumpy road..will the feet hit the glass?
Most of the pressure is on the bumper, not the glass. I had this rack on a different car and did damage the bumper slightly when we hit a huge bump. This Mazda has the bumper protector which prevents most bumper damage from the rack. I wouldn't worry about the glass as long as the bottom feet aren't on it.
Thanks for the reply. I purchased the exact one and confirm with the weight of the bikes..the feet don't make contact with the glass. However, be careful when driving..any unexpected bump could force feet to touch glass.
Gracias amigou👍
Good spot 👍
Can you make a video how to install king joe pro 3 for mazda cx-5 2018
I just bought a used bike rack like this one. On one set of srtaps there is upper and two sides instead of 1 upper,1lower and 1 side. Is this defective.
Have you worried about it being stolen off your car with bikes on it?
Is it just me, but the top straps keep slipping. The rack has to keep being repositioned, every 20 miles
Would this be suitable for a VW BEETLE CABRIOLET?
Thanks
Steve
Thanks idk if mine will work but?
What can be done to make it legal as this method hides number plate and lights when there's a bike on it?
move the upper leg forward more so it doesnrt move fron the glass
Have you had any problems with that upper spoiler after having bikes secured to the rack?
I haven't had any problems, but I try not to put 2 heavy bikes on it. Some of the Bones bike racks have solved this by running the cable higher. Like this one: amzn.to/2I2kOn1
Do this kind rack scrach your car?
Does the bottoms rest on the bumper, or just above? Thanks.
Will those clips ruin your paint??
Nice, but it covers your license plate, could be a problem with the law
Does this bike rack obstruct the view of your reg number once your bikes are on? Thanks
HOLY Ss BATMAN
If the clips are metal they will severely scratch and ruin the paint where they are applied. Seems junkie to me.
They're coated metal, so made of this hard rubberized material that won't scratch the car. You can search around, I've never heard of anyone complaining that these can scratch the car.
Something I've done with cheaper ones (not sure if I'll do with the Bones, which I just got), is to wrap the clips in painter's tape. So if that's a concern, the painter's tape is a cheap solution. :)
Yes the metal ones do scratch it has happened to me
@@miltama7035 the official videos emphasize cleaning the boot first, so you don't get dirt under neath and scratch the car and damage the rubberized paint
Would you drive long distance (interstate / highway speeds) with this rack loaded?
Yeah I've done many road trips with it
Hi..can I use this one in my renegade 2017? I need to know please..
Would it be possible to use U-Locks to Lock a Bike or tow to the rack? So if you were to leave the bikes on the rack overnight, say your sleeping in the car, could you lock the bikes to the rack so someone would have to steal the whole rack if they wanted the bikes?
It's not easy to lock the bikes to this rack, I wouldn't say this rack is secure enough for an overnight. You could maybe U-lock the bike to the rack, but all people would have to do would be to cut the straps and they could probably finagle the lock off.
i wonder how much that rear window costs to replace when someone behind you bumps that rack ?
Not nearly as much as it will cost to replace the bike. I've had that happen, the car was fine but not the bike. Fortunately when someone rear ends you, their insurance pays for it. I was reimbursed for the damage to my bike.
THANK YOU
Are the hooks metal?
Top leg on glass? Seems like that could be trouble.
anyone know if this bike works with kids bikes? probably need a crossbar adapter?
Where can get this bike ruck please?
Thanks for the tips about the lights. Not for me.
Is this rack only for Mazda???? Can people use on Lexus RX400h too???
Yeah this rack works on almost all cars. But look in the video description you’ll want to get the EX version so it takes some weight off the spoiler.
