Eating China’s 1,000-Year-Old Egg
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 вер 2024
- Century eggs don’t look anything like the eggs you might be used to. Cut one open, and you’ll find an albumen that’s brown jelly and a yolk that’s shades of black and brownish green. They are considered a delicacy in China, dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Qianggeng Wu and Aishu Sun, a married couple who live in China’s Changlong Village, show us how they use traditional preserving techniques to transform ordinary duck, quail and chicken eggs into tasty century eggs.
This Great Big Story was inspired by Genesis.

Works with rice as well, I have a Chinese origin. This is my moms account as you can see by my name
@Thomas Robinson The egg whites (the black ones, I have never tried yellow) are translucent and have a bouncy mouthfeel (?). The egg whites, when cooked, are a grayish green but don't let that put you off, the texture is creamier and smoother than normal eggs and it has a unique taste! It takes some getting used to, but once you do, it's absolutely amazing especially on tofu, congee or served as an appetizer!
@Thomas Robinson like egg, but sweeter rather than salty actually... like savory pudding...
@Thomas Robinson It has a strong flavor! The first time is not pleasant, but, then, things got better. Sometimes, I search to buy one. not because I love it, just cuz it can remind me of the special strong flavor.
@Thomas Robinson Salty and Creamy. I like it but trust me when I say foreigners won't like it.
This is really really delicious. Trust me
How'd you know?
You had a century egg? Describe the taste.
TheGamerJ it’s really really good, it has this slight stinky ,earthy taste, but it is really really creamy. The texture is strange and jelly like, and the aftertaste is a lingering earthy taste.

Cheese is not rotten
To anyone wondering eventhough it looks nasty but it actually doesn't even taste aged like you would in many aged/fermented food, the egg white part just taste more earthy and more firmer/jelly texture while the yolk taste more earthy and creamier. As a Chinese person, I have no idea why this is called the "Century egg" or the "100-year old egg." In Chinese, this is called a “皮蛋” which is literally the "skin egg." And they are not specific for special occasions (mostly). If you find this dish interesting, I recommend the dish 皮蛋瘦肉粥 (congee with pork and century egg). China's KFC actually has this on its breakfast menu, and it is wonderful.
@Dino Zheng I’ve been in China for 2 years and I Went many times in KFC , but I’ve never seen something with 皮蛋on the menu 🤔... maybe some KFC dinner make them , or I went there when they finish to sell all 😅

Growing up eating them, I love century eggs, however, I don’t think you can appreciate the taste if you didn’t grow up eating it.

Burrito Warrior I never asked for your opinion, I didn’t even intend on hurting anyone.
It's pretty rare to see a video about Asia that doesn't have any racist remarks nowadays
Title: eating China's 1000 year old egg.
Man: century eggs taste really good.
2 minutes later:
Man: *yes, it usually takes about 30 days*
Me:
But did he said it will tack 1000 year-
@@Manuela.a It is a hyperbole
Minced pork congee, and a cut up century egg mixed in? - this is how you eat well. It's my favourite dish
Alyssa Tan same here in hong kong
I like how he doesn't give a f**k how he looks. He wore the same shirt while making the eggs and eating with guests. My man.
Guy: this is the 1000 year old egg
Me: Ewwww
Guy: also called century egg
Me:Ewwww
Guy: it is a preserved egg for 100 years
Me: ewwww
The Old man: 10 days*
Me: oh thats not so bad, yum
Hahaha... Great description
Accurate.
Bh
As a Malaysian, I ate the eggs too, it kinda delicious if added with soy sauce.
not best, sesame oil and one drop vinegar
Century Egg: You'll taste me as good as egg
Balut: Just add salt and vinegar
hahahaha
Eat plain it's great too
There's salty egg in the philippines too, by far what I know it's called itlog na pula.
This is what I love about culture. Letting others enjoy, and appreciate it as well. The old man welcoming foreigners to eat them shows that it’s something that he enjoys making, and truly passionate about. If everyone was this welcoming with their culture, than it it would be a warmer world to live in.
Fun fac: Despite that it sounds like their speaking chinese their not, Its a chinese dialect however i cant identify it
I can understand Shanghainese which is really a dialect from the province of Jiangsu, and this sounds like a very warped version of Shanghainese so It's likely a Jiangsu dialect. Fun fact, back in the Ming Dynasty this would've been close to the mainstream dialect for the entire country, so although it might sound really weird, it is in fact bona fide Chinese
i think they sound more like from nothern Zhejiang.
@@haozili3702 Not sure about that....lol, some of my family are from northern zhejiang and I can't understand a $%^# word they say.... sorry family
Liu LiZhe my family’s from ningbo and I grew up listening (occasionally also speaking) ningbonese. I can understand shanghainese relatively well and I understood them so I’m surprised you couldn’t understand them hmmm
Isn’t that still technically Chinese?
Guy: Started 40 years ago...
Title: 1,000 year Egg...
Me: That doesn't add up-
The ming dynasty is quiet a long time ago
Yes
The first time I eat it, I don't even know that it was an egg. Don't judge the food by it's look. It's delicious.
idk why ppl say these are ‘rotten’.
They’re preserved.
Plus, cheese is basically the same thing except with milk, which is notorious for spoiling quickly.
And they taste so good with congee and crackers no cap
Hey! I laid those eggs just yesterday!

Narrator:This is considered a delicacy in China.
Me:Everything is a delicacy in China
Even you
Yummy oxygen
yea, basically
Bat soup..and world go boom
@Baby chiken hello troll
It alone can taste pretty icky, so it’s really recommended you have it with something, for example, Chinese congee. The yolk itself can be an odd texture for some and it itself tastes bitter and sour, which is why you should have something with it
I eat it straight.with sum soy sauce it's so good to me I love the firm bouncy texure
Me: Speaks fluent Chinese.
Also me: Reads the subtitles as I don't understand their dialect.
Yes I am a student of Mandarin but I can't understand the couple at all.
yeah do you know what dialect it is? i only speak cantonese :/
It sounds like they are speaking Mandarin, but with voices consonants.
I am a local and i need to read the english subtitle to understand his mandarin lol
So after consulting with experts, it's confirmed a Mandarin-Wu mixed tongue, and that's where the voiced consonants comes from.
Omg her voice made me so homesick as it sounds so similar to my maternal grandmother's Mandarin, whose native tonguage is Wu Chinese.
If you don't know what Wu Chinese is, Shanghaiese is a dialect of Wu Chinese, although Shanghaiese phonology is a bit degenerated among all varieties of Wu Chinese.
Cant believe that they took that off the meny at Salty’s
