Thank you for this, this helped when every other google search failed.
I did the wright of the asset tag, couldn't test the re-write yet. It worked fine here. Thanks a lot!!!
3 years later and still helping people! I use it to remove BIOS Asset tags from donated machines from other organizations. Thanks for the quick and easy tutorial and download link.
Just wanted to say thanks. I bought an Inspiron 660S from ebay that had a bad motherboard. I bought a replacement board and installed it on the PC and it worked great. I just couldn't figure out how to change the service tag to reflect the one on the case. On a lot of the Dell forums, a lot of the 'techs' said that it cannot be changed.
You welcome :)
Thanks! It worked for asset tag only, since there was already a service tag set.
*Hi, I heard also that once you change one time your service tag you can't rewrite new one but you can try to reset your bios or update to latest Bios version and do the same thing like I show in this video tutorial.Good luck*
Worked perfectly - TY - All D/L links still valid. Changed service tag on Dell 620 ok - Kudos!
please ensure service tag in correct format and setup password disabled..Still have the same error for latitude. Please help on this
Thanks, it worked perfectly
Working fine for me :) thank you very much

Thanks you so much bro.
Wouldn't work on a Latitude E5430. Says "Error: Cannot change the Service Tag. Pleasure ensure the tag is in a correct format, and the SETUP password is disabled." No passwords are set in the BIOS.
it worked very well. The only observation that the bios has is that it is in legacy mode.
Thank you!!! =)
*You Welcome :)*
This method works only if your BIOS is set for legacy mode. For UEFI BIOS, this method will boot into CentOS directly from the USB without giving you the options shown on 1:55 of the video. AFAIK all Dell PCs support Legacy BIOS option.
Yes I had the same problem. It does not work.

Big thanks to you brother for making this video. It saves my time so often. Have to support some regular users over the phone and this part was always hard to explain. Now my question is- Does this work for PowerEdge Servers 13gen and above as it perfectly works with R720, R620 and etc... on all PowerEdge 12gen servers and Blade Servers... Thank you in advance!.
Sorry for late response, it should work from 12 Gen to 14 Gen but try it cause I don't have anymore DELL products...

Only issue I am seeing is on newer Dell units that no longer have a Legacy Bios compatibility option. I can say this will come in handy on alot of the Legacy machines I deal with on the side - also Dell's PE tool can be handy if you can get your hands on it as well (Similar to the Gandalf PE tool - just with Dell specific tools in it).
Thank you for the video. Do you know if it will work with a Dell G7 17 7700?
Hi, I was just wondering if you please could help to find the file for Latitude 5290 2in1? This file is not compatible. TY
Hey , just wanted to ask if is it possible to remove the asset tag of a dell latitude 3420.
Best regards !
Hi.
I needed a 1150 socket motherboard and got this Dell precision T1700 motherboard. I don't have a Dell. When I boot it it shows me the AMT menu and asks for the service tag. I don't have any on that. Not sure what to do here. Can I leave it blank?
I already got the temp sensor, power cable and fans sorted out. Not sure what to do. I really don't care about dell stuff. I just needed a motherboard.
Hello, I have a Dell Optiplex 790 and i would like to delete the Service tag. Asset /s /d gives me "Cannot change the service tag". Can you Help me please?
did it end up working?
This didn't work on my Inspiron. The Service Tag got changed and now I have no way to fix it and I believe it is causing an issue with Bitlocker. Any other suggestions?
dell t5820 i have the issue "please ensure the tag is a correct format and the setup password is disabled , have you a idea what it is the issue?????
How you create the service and asset tag...i mean how to come up the the tag number its self..cause tried and showed me error
Hi I am getting " cannot change the service tag. Please check the tag is in a correct format and the set u password is disabled" Can you please help? Thanks
Hi what would help to change the asset tag on Dell 5540?
I have an Optiplex 5060SFF and the Service Tag will not change. It gives an error saying the BIOS is passworded (it is not) or cannot change the tag.
Didn´t work with Inspiron One PC. (2320/30 models): After typing the new Service TAG I received a Message followed by strong whistle: THIS MACHINE DOESN´T SUPPORT AN ASSET/SERVICE TAG 😪
I have no DOS option, only Linux graphic mode and I have downloaded Dell software from Your link.
First off, thanks for the video. I am having a bit of an issue when booting the disk. It boots fine but not seeing the options you are. I am presented with the option to boot SLI 3.0.0_A00 or Test media and boot SLI 3.0.0_A00 or trouble shoot. Selecting the top two take me to a full blown Linux GUI. The last takes me to the same GUI but I believe with a basic graphics. I don't see a way to get to DOS mode? As per one of the other comments, verified that Secure boot was disabled. Any thoughts?
I'm sorry can you put video on YT how it looks like cause I don't have Dell devices anymore... And also your Bios setting about Boot options
Try booting into Legacy mode rather than UEFI boot mode. I had the same issue as yours. It would boot CentOS only. When I tried booting in Legacy mode, it worked fine.

I do not see the 3 options from the Rufus that I've downloaded. It just go right into the GUI of a Linux OS. I have a Dell Precision 3420. I've tried for 1/2 day and given up.
It must be, try with exact version from video. github.com/pbatard/rufus/releases/download/v3.4/rufus-3.4p.exe
You mean the three options to choice from where you arrow down and select "DOS-Based Asset Tag Utility". That has nothing to do with Rufus. When you press F12 for a boot menu, pick the USB stick under the Legacy options, not the UEFI options. I made that mistake the first time I booted to it also.
Does this utility change service tag work on Precision 7730 laptop ? I make a bootable usb drive but I can only boot to the Linux ... there is no option that I can get out to the command prompt. Please help.
If you tried with rufus to make bottable usb check to see if you get the message about the alternate write mode when building the bootable USB - Use the ISO mode - Rufus now has a challange/response asking what type of write you want to do - Choose the ISO mode - and all should work fine if not try to make bootable usb with another utility like *Etcher* how to installl and how to download check this video below.

Hey my first gaming laptop was bad so Dell sent me a replacement but never returned the old one, the thing is that the old one was working but after 1 week it never turned on again so I want to replace motherboard and I want to be able to use it, do you think that if I insert the existing service tag they will burn the motherboard again? Or deactivate the new motherboard? Will this method (change service tag) help to not have this happen again?
*No, replacing the Service tag doesn't burn your mainboard, only issue what you can face is if you type service tag from another model is issue whit drivers if you for example check on the internet drivers from support using Service Tag it can give you wrong drivers so my sugesstion is to give only the service tag for that model.*

Hi, I don't have Dell devices anymore so I can't do testing with errors what user can find while trying to change or remove service tag. I think probably because your device has service tag it may be that your device is somehow protected in someway to don't alow bios modification again ( in this case to change service tag).
You can try to kill CMOS using Hirent boot to try to trick this and after that try again to Change service tag. *(I'm not sure if will that work)*
