I think it’s good you shared this. The only issue is DOL. they have proven to be of the highest quality productions in fact a record store that specializes in curating LPs carries them as one of their brands and rightfully so..
Good video, Mathew. I think I have about 5 of these in my collection. A couple of these I bought, not knowing what they were. I pretty much avoid these. Actually, the sound quality on the ones I have is pretty good. They tend to be extremely quiet (how do they do that?) Like you said, on most of these the prices are not that much cheaper. I bought a couple of these when I could not find any recently pressed reissues. I am sure people that are new to vinyl don’t understand what they buying. The copyright laws in EU expire a few years before they do in the US, which is why we see more of the jazz issues. In a few years we’ll probably start to see more rock records like this. Eventually, it will start to affect Beatles releases so we will see some bizarre packages then! Always an interesting topic!
The copyright in the public domain stops at 1962. The laws in the EU were amended but it wasn't retroactive to the then current 50 year mark. Fresh Sounds, Solar, Gambit, Avid, American Classics are EU labels that issue public domain titles on cd plus others later ones that they had to pay royalties on. Many of the sessions covered on these labels were never issued or only issued once on cd. Original session notes, pics, and quality sound are included and sometimes yield a nicer presentation verse the reissue by the company with the rights.
Good advice, I couldn't agree more with questionable newer pressings. And that's pretty much the best way to describe them, because some are actually equal to or better than the original. And congrats on the milestone! - Red
To be honest, I used to make it a point to sway from Waxtime and DOL releases. However, I was happily surprised to listen to a Waxtime release not long ago and ever since I have been buying their releases because of their excellent sound quality and consistency in the quality of their pressings. I have the MOV release of Mingus Ah Um and to my ears, the Waxtime release sounds more analog and full bodied. Not to mention that all of my Waxtime records have been flat without a hint of warping and the Mingus Ah Um was no exception. The Mingus Ah Um from MOV was thin sounding and very digital. By contrast, my Tone Poets have had more quality issues with the vinyl pressing. Same with Mobile Fidelity records. Whenever in doubt, I buy Waxtime. At least, I know I will get a record that is not warped and that sounds good.
I’ve purchased many Tone Poets and Blue Note Classics and have not had one bad press yet. The couple of Waxtimes I happened to get sounded like they were cut from an mp3 or something. Very flat. Maybe it’s the two I happened to get.
Yep, I get e-mails from "distributors" selling this kind of junk to stores like mine. I always just delete them. I only order good product from respectable distributors.
Hi Chance. Thanks for stopping by. Those sleeves are the BCW Supplies 4 Mil Record Sleeves which I bought off of Amazon. I like them but they are only good for the single LP. I use the Vinyl Styl 72261 Protective Outer Record Sleeves for the gatefolds but it is not the crystal clear material the others are made from.
Even bad companies do produce the occasional good record. If I happen to get one, great for me. I will always give them a chance. I usually buy them where they can be returned. But, I do really like Music On Vinyl, Rhino, Friday Music and nearly everything pressed by GZ Media. United Pressing is hit and miss. I have gotten both great pressings and not so great pressings from them. I actually have some great sounding pressings on DOL. New sub here! Thanx!
Hi, I just returned my recently purchased MoV Ah Um. I found they some tracks were great but others had way too much background noise. I was hoping the entire Lp would be quieter. Do you know if it is the pressing and i should try again, or am I being too picky?
Hi. I just listened back again to both versions, the MOV version and the Columbia anniversary double LP and they both sound similar. MOV sounds clean throughout the album. Are you referring to popping, album noise or the recording itself?
Sadly I find pressing quality and jacket quality to be just as good on the budget reissues I've bought (DOL and Wax Time) as many of the things I've gotten from the big labels. As for source material, most big labels use digital files frequently. I stick to the originals labels (early pressings or reissues) whenever possible, but many titles haven't been reissued by the original labels, hence these "black market" labels sadly become the only way to find decent copies of most 1950s stuff. I live in a part of the world where there are no record stores, and records before the mid 70s were mostly imported and very hard to find on the used market.
I wouldn't buy Miles Davis Columbia works on one of these labels but Joe Gordon or Bill Barron might be game because it's long out of print or never issued on cd in the US. Fresh Sounds was the original public domain label but they did it right often reproducing notes and pics that the parent US label didn't bother with. "It's only cd quality" that was an utterance before youtube except maybe in Michael Fremer's house.
Wow..Brubeck and Coltrane not making money off of it. Ok..I got Blue Train from Blue Note and DOL..both DSD transfer. Got the Blue Note with scuffs and the DOL pristine. Let people enjoy music. Want to stop DOL..stop asking for people's left nut for an LP.
people with a big income and a stereo system costs .......?$ try to tell us what to buy? many audiophile ppl don't understand Sh%t about what they are playing. i do believe that most dead jazz + other artists never gave a fakk about audiophilysm! sure i wouldn't buy a bad recording thats cheap and sound that way but i will also avoid from overpriced records! Period! i also wonder why u can get some blue notes classics priced 10 bucks?
In Retrospect, I think the WaxTime are decent, Doxy and Dol are considered less quality, as far as the source? Well Heck, they are all digital Man, MOFI is digital too. Lots of assumptions,
To me all of the ones I have on those labels sound very thin. They have no depth to them. There is lot to it including how it's mastered and how it's cut. I would imagine the source file matters as well.

Your videos are awesome man! Would love to see you do a Boston review sometime

Awesome job, thank you for the break down - LABELS
I always see these Wax Time, DOL, Doxy records at Half Price Books for $14.99. I avoid them all!

Enjoyed this video! Curious what outer sleeves you use? They look to be pretty true to fit

Agree for the most part, but in my experience gz is a bottom tier plant

Brubeck is a 45 speed 12 in LP? I have my dads original. Not remembering that part.
This a special reissue at 45rpm. It sounds incredible.

I have two wax time records that claim to use DMM makes me wonder if they are telling the truth
What about Ermitage?
Im not sure on that one. I’ll have to see if I have any. I can’t remember off the top of my head.
HA HA HA nothing wrong with cheap records PERIOD

Tone Poet is digital too fyi.
Maybe biased becuase you thought it would sound bad before, that can be enough to make your mind up. @@bellisariosonic
I always avoid them. I don’t even use them as place holders. Pure garbage. Congrats on 100 !!! Its not easy.
