We bring Wet Ones wipes to the buffet. They have benzalkonium chloride, which kills norovirus (purell does not). We wash our hands walking in and then wipe them when we sit down to eat. They sell them at Walmart and other pharmacies in either a box of individual packets or a tub or big pack of wipes.

@@luluballoon benzalkonium chloride is ineffective against norovirus because it is what is considered a "naked" virus which have non-enveloped viral capsids instead of an enveloped capsid (like influenza). Really the only way to combat norovirus is the use of a chlorine solution on hard surfaces, high heat for utensil sanitation, and washing your hands before and after eating and using the toilet.

Why is it always teachers who are so bad at statistics? I just did the math for you: Only 0.00363% of the total population contracted norovirus on those cruise ships in 2023. out of 31.5m passengers only 1144 contracted norovirus. CDC statistics.

@@Forakusit isn’t that teachers can’t do math. Those 1144 passengers really wish they had not been sick. Maybe wet ones would have helped.

One of the reasons I love HAL is that the buffer is NOT self serve.
I do use the wash stations a lot, because I've seen so many people not washing up as they should. When I sit down with my food, I use hand sanitizer. That buffet looked awful, unkempt.

Ginger "beer" (non alcoholic) works, green apples, bananas, rice dry toast and cola (coke works best) but get the fizz out, you just need to make it flat, little sips. Those are also natural relief, oh Papaya we've found helps also.

On the Disney Wish there was staff making sure people were washing hands on the way into the buffet, but they also had plenty of sinks. Even when going into the evening meals in the themed restaurants you had to apply hand sanitizer before you could enter.

After COVID waned a bit, you can really see how NASTY people are! They don’t wash their hands at all. Unfortunately Royal Caribbean has slacked off on making sure that people at least use the sanitizers even though alcohol doesn’t deactivate norovirus. I at least use hand wipes before eating when sinks aren’t available. Mechanical removal is better than nothing.

As Mariner myself, whenever or whoever having seasickness due to vessel motion, go to the main deck and take the fresh air. If throwing out happen, just do it and let go. Return back to take a glass of warm water and it will help a lot. Don't lay down on the bed and stay in the cabin.

And although we don't tend to suffer from seas sickness, it's good to know that a lower suit in the middle of the ship might help for noticing much less movement of the ship in rough seas as we plan on taking a cruise ship from New York over to England !!

I was on the NCL Spirit at the end of 2022 going from Hawaii to Auckland, NZ by putting 3 trips together back-to-back-to back. The Spirit is a bouncy little ship, but so beautiful after her redo right before Covid. I hope if you had Captain Ash, that you got a chance to meet him; he is truly one of the nicest people I've ever met. On my recent on the NCL Sun, I met the Captain who was the Master of the Spirit in 2019 and he said that they Sun was so much easier to dock than the Spirit. The reason that the Spirit is so bouncy is that she has an older style of stabilizer; it is physical only, not mechanical. The reason she is so hard to dock is that she has a fixed prop and just 3 thrusters, one on each side near the bow and one in the stern which can be angled depending on need. Regarding Teppanyaki, my choice is the vegetable choice at the bottom of the list but I substitute the tofu for shrimp; I make this choice because I want more vegetables with my meal than their standard choices. One of the things I liked about the Spirt was the ability to walk from the 7th to the 13th deck without having to go inside. I'm so glad that they saved this ship with the upgrades.

Hello, Ben and David. I’ve been watching your cruise vlogs for about seven months. At the time, I never thought I’d cruise again. Well, in February I started a full time job with benefits. Since, you cruise vloggers we’re having such a great time cruising, I decided to book an Alaskan cruise vacation. So, next April my husband and I are going on the Norwegian Bliss from a seven day voyage.

Just returned from Alaska on the Norwegian Encore. If you still can I would recommend cancelling Encore and taking a Princess raise instead. Compare times in port, shows (hardly anything to see on Encore because Norwegian cancelled them) and Norwegian has no “pull” and docks waaaay out of town so you have time consuming bus trips and hard to find and use shuttles making it very hard to see the towns. Princess usually docks right in town so you walk off and you’re right in town putting you also close to your excursions as well.

I remember when I was on royal last year and this lady next to me pretended to wash her hands and walked away. Most were washing their hands for 2.2 milliseconds like sheesh can you at least wash it for 10 seconds!?? This is why I always carry wipes with me all the time when I’ve went to the buffet. I myself also stopped going and went to the restaurants instead. Even before Covid this is BASIC hygiene, taught to pre school kids! Smh

Great advise! We personally LOVE the aft cabins. The movement is very conducive to sleeping!! I get the best sleep on cruises!! We have been on some rough ones. On a 15 day Hawaii we ran into some rough seas. Enough for them to put the sickness bags our all over. I am prone to seasickness so I always get the patches from my doctor before I leave.

I love it when it’s rough. It’s the only time you know you’re cruising. We like being near the front of the ship, just under the bridge. We have never been sea sick and I crossed from Holyhead, Wales to Dublin, Ireland in December. Talk about rocking and rolling!

I was pretty seasick on the Disney Magic a few years ago. We had a room in the front of the ship and the rocking combined with some very strong coffee was a recipe for seasickness! The front desk sent up some green apples and saltines, and it really did help! Something about the acid in the apples helps relieve motion sickness.

Hi guys, always count on y’all to brighten up my day. Even with your rough seas, I’d rather be where you are. Had a really rough long night, so tired just want to sleep. But I so look forward to seeing y’all , then I’ll nap. Sad about the buffet, one thing I always wanted to try once I get to go on a cruise. But I’ll pass on any cruises that have any possibility of cold weather, was on the navy ship the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier for 3 days. It was rough, military food no flavor at all. Didn’t get sea sick, but it was still an experience. Thanks for cheering me up 😊, can’t wait for next Sunday video 🌸

I’m anti-buffet unless there’s no other option or I need something quick to go. And yes! Wash your hands before AND after!
I like to say that washing your hands before going through the buffet is for other people. Washing your hands AFTER the buffet (and before grabbing cups and utensils) is for YOU!

I have only been seriously seasick once. It was 2002 and we booked the cheapest cabin on the cheapest Carnival ship we could find. We had a great time and I have many fond memories, but there was like a 12 hour period of rough seas and it was awful! But we survived and had a great cruise!

I'm with you on the Buffets now, ever since we did Virgin and it was more of a food court, now I'm not saying they were perfect, but I think that having stations and then ordering what you want is far better, than the old fashioned buffet.

I have twice sailed from UK to Australia and both times we were caught in heavy storms. The first time on the Fairsky, there were no stabilisers. I think the second ship, Australis, did, but she still really rocked. Then in 2019 on a cruise we hit the tail end of a cyclone. I actually loved the movement of the ships, nothing like falling into a strangers cabin when they opened their door just as you stumbled past lol. I get car sick, and more so on buses, but I have never been sea or air sick.

MotionEase is great when you're just a little dissettled. Sometimes interior cabins make me feel a bit nervous when there's motion and the MotionEase is just enough to calm it down. It just basically relaxes you. If you're actually feeling sick, go for the Bonine, definitely.

I think you guys bring forth the actual cruising experience better than any of the other sites I visit. It’s nothing against them, each brings their own perspective to the cruising experience but nobody comes close to making the experience seem as fun as you guys.
We’ll still probably never take another one. My wife and I and our son did a barefoot cruise as guests of my cousin and his husband back in ‘80 - the Grenadines - 100 people including crew on a 100” lead hulled, two masted ship. It seems a far cry from these floating hotel/shopping mall ships with thousands of people. And drug sniffing dogs…
But thank you guys for giving the experience a fun vibe. Always look out for your videos…

Great video. It seemed the rough seas were short-lived. That's good. Sorry to hear your avoiding the buffet but it is the same system-wide. We just got off the Rotterdam. The Lido Market was the same as you experienced. Normally HAL has servers but people were grabbing themsleves. We gave up on the buffets a while ago. It is a shame but everytime we walked in during the last few cruises has made it a no-no for us. We now do mainly speciality dining venues and club rooms.

I absolutely love watching people try and keep a camera steady when they're on a moving ship - my gimbal doesn't stand a chance, ha! I cruised on Arcadia last year and we had pretty rough seas heading over to Amsterdam - the ship was flying from side to side at times - it really doesn't affect me at all, but the ship was really quiet as a result of the movement!
