I love the idea of having both a grooving and the kerfing attachment, perfect for staring the groove in something where the grain is going against you, and has the chance to tear out...
Absolutely. That was something I tried when I was testing the plane actually. I wanted to enlarge a groove in a finished item, an iPad stand, and didn't want to risk breaking out any of the new edge. The kerfing blade made a pristine cut, and the cutter finished the groove perfectly. I was able to just lacquer the new cut, and you couldn't tell if had been altered.
"043 For Me" I have been looking for a nice 043 to use for the small grooving projects. The fact this has a kerfing blade attachment is very interesting. Tanks for the Review! Would be nice if we had them here in USA.
Hi Dusty Splinters, The only place we don't ship Quangsheng products to is North America. Woodcraft are the best people to get in touch with over there, I'm sure if enough people ask for the 043 they will get them in. Cheers, Matthew
043 for me. I love working with hand tools - I find it more rewarding than using power tools. it's like you've really made something. good review. cheers.
I've been thinking about making one of these kerfing planes for a while now, and to see one that's also a plough plane is great! Nice video, as usual Mitch. 043 for me
043 for me. Thanks Mitch. You always give the best honest reviews, that help a lot when choosing a product. Also great many thanks for woodworking tutorials
+Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD That is so exciting. I do not know that I have ever won anything like this before. I went to your about page, and have opened a dialog with you in facebook.
Thanks for this. I did send mine back as the fence did not sit true to the skate in full tension. They offered to send me another but at the time I thought I'd try restoring some old ones I had. Maybe time to get another sent out.
That's a shame - to be honest the old ones can be pretty poor in that respect too. The wooden fence allows for fairly easy adjustment of any out of parallel error, with a few stopped shavings doing the trick.
Well I'll give it a go thanks for replying. The old one wooden one I currently have has a tiny twist in the skate so that the iron, even though square, presents obliquely - quite annoying! Nothing a few light taps won't resolve when I have time.
Cheers Dan. I'm sorry, the draw for the plane has been and gone - I usually limit the response time to a week or two after the video is published. There will be similar giveaways in the future, so why not click the notification button (next to 'Subscribed') on one of my UA-cam pages, that way you'll get to hear whenever I publish something new. Thanks for watching
Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD Thanks Mitch, I have to say, I am not a big commenter normally, but I have been with you for a long time, and you've peaked my interest in hand tools. Because of you, I try to incorporate hand tools in my work as much as possible...possibly eventually getting rid of electricity completely!?!?
That's nice to hear Mark.I do read all the comments I get, and reply to most. Doesn't need to be on topic or relevant, I just enjoy the banter and seeing who's watching what. And don't forget, "regular viewer giveaways", unlike this sort of thing, only go to those I see commenting and/or sharing.
043 for me Mitch, from what I heard and read, Quangsheng produces really good planes, which are sold under different brands here in Germany by Finetools and Dictum. Btw. "no dust in the air" is really nice. I build my workbench this year and I did the work 99% with handtools. It took a long time, but much less noise and dust. :)
Well that looks pretty handy, well made too... nice, Quangsheng seem like a good quality company, I like it. Congratulations on your milestone (one of many I'm sure ) and it's good to see you are becoming more relaxed in front of the camera, you always struck me as a bag of nerves in the past - or is that just my imagination... hmm. Anyway congrats and an 043 for me too, I was taught that if you can't beat them, join them... and I am an ardent believer that violence is wrong, so... :) sign me up please, thank you... oh and good luck to all the participants!
Cheers. I just couldn't get used to speaking to nobody while I was filming - easy to speak to myself in my head, but out loud it never seemed right. Still not quite there in my eyes, but getting there. Thankfully I don't worry about it, or else I wouldn't publish anything!
Hello, this is the 1st I’ve seen the Luban Quangsheng 043 Ploughing plane, “AWESOME “ featured, Imperial & Metric (4+4) blade assortments + the merging saw blade--I’m REALLY Impressed with it’s features and your review ,, and it comes with a beautiful wooden fence, Hope to hear from you and I’ve marked “Thumbs Up” on 10/20/24 , Sincerely, Gary Peterson, (Sneaky Pete)😊
Hi Gunter. There are no nickers (pre-cutters) since this is a single skate plane - it would be possible to have the right hand side nicker, but there would be nowhere to house the left hand one. Of course, for cross grain use, you should therefore lay in knife lines before planing. If cross grain grooves (housings, etc.) were a large part of your work, then a plough with nickers would be worth considering.
Thank you for a easy to follow video, this plane would be a great asset to any set of tools. I can't use the router very well due to arthritis in my hands, the plane looks like the answer To me #.
Mine didn't come with a Rosewood fence more like Teak and the irons weren't nicely rapped like yours looks like you got the pro mo one anyway im happy with it.
I've not other than viewed the fence on mine, so I certainly can't confirm it's rosewood, only looks like it. At the end of the day, you're happy with yours, and that's the main thing. Enjoy it
@@mitchwoodwork It had some nicks on the plane from not having enough protection in the packaging , which is a shame as it a quality tool, oh by the way the fence is Cherry.
043 for me. Thanks for the review. Have you looked at other brands for comparison? I'm wanting to move more toward the hand work side of things in my shop work, so reviews like this are really useful.
Cheers John. To be honest most of my kit is 50+ years old, and although I see a fair bit of what's out there now, I don't like to comment much on anything I haven't had a chance to road test so to speak. I can't afford to double up on things either, so half of my reviews, at least, are where I've been invited to try something by either the manufacturer or a retailer. Of course when they make something available for review, it usually means they're proud of it and it's going to do well, which is great for me because i get to try some great stuff, and like with this I get to give one away.
You're right - the guy's at Workshop Heaven are looking into it themselves, and I can think of a couple of easy solutions owners could do themselves (maybe a video in itself)
Hi Mitch! Just found this video-great review. Curious if you've tried this plane left-handed and how it worked out. I've considered getting a Record 043 as I know those work decently well left-handed, and this is based off that plane.
I haven't tried that. Reply to this, so I get a reminder, and I'll see if I get a chance in the next couple of days. Better still, email me as well. Sorry, but I've got so much going on I need as many reminders as possible :)
A kind of weird question: Normally when we have to dimention wood by hand. We mark the parallel face in the other side of the wood with a marking gauge and. Consider you a better option marking the parallel face making a little groove with the fence in the reference face of the plank to make a "extreme" perfect dimentioned board?
Do you mean use the plough plane to gauge the thickness, before planing the parallel face? That's a reasonable way to go, if the sides are clean enough / plumb enough to use the plough. Where a lot of material needs removing, or you wish to resaw the workpiece, ploughing a kerf provides a great guide for a hand saw.

Oh, I'm sure they will send me one as long as I pay the currency exchange rate and the postage. What we need here in USA is a dealer for them.
Hi Dusty Splinters,

Looks like a nice plane, I just got an old stanley plow plane , too bad it will not be easy to make it easily into a kerfing plane ...
You could adopt the same approach of attaching a length of rip saw blade (or maybe a section from a band saw blade) to the plane's skate.
Very nice. Thanks Mitch. 043 for me!

Surprising. But I do not see any nickers. What Would you do for crosscutting? Tx for sharing and bravo for your work!
Cheers. Use the kerfing blade to run in the sides a little way before ploughing. Or strike a couple of knife lines.
tx sir!
btw i use my old Stanley 45 that belonged to my grand pa. But a bit ...capricious to use. You must know it well.

For sure you could do this or something similar. I'm hoping that this won't be necessary in future batches, having pointed it out though :-)

A kind of weird question:
Normally when we have to dimention wood by hand.
