I was given a 1901 Stanley router plane and it has become my go to tool for finishing of any joinery. Before in was given it I never new they even existed. I have a lot of old planes and vintage tools but this is the moat used in a modern joinery workshop.
I've said for years that the router plane is one of, if the THE, best tools I own. Happens to be a Lie-Nielsen. I use it on so many projects. Much success with this new offering, Jonathan.
There have been more times that I’ve needed or could’ve used a router plane than almost every other tool. I’ve definitely needed it more than any other plane. After weighing the pros and cons over the past year or so, I’ve finally decided and ordered the KM-Tools on Black Friday. I think the KM/ HONGDUI addresses every flaw or issue in all other router planes on the market. And I’m digging the I chromium steel used to reduce the rusting. One less tool to constantly have to chase rust from in my hot humid Houston shop.
I just received my router plane from you yesterday. I also ordered the 4pc knife set. Jonathan it was so worth the wait and it’s a great tool. The quality of this is second to none. Hope to see more collaboration with Hongdui in future. Love it
This looks like a really great piece of kit. If I hadn't literally just bought a veritas about 3 months ago, I'd be all over this. Keep up with designing these awesome tools!
This beautifull router just arrived at my house i was so impressed way it is made. I was blown away with it what is super is the instruction manual excellent it is . australia.
I bought the Lee Valley router plane a couple of years ago and it revolutionized my woodworking. If you care about precise joinery, you NEED a router plane. I just ordered the KM router plane, because I can see several advantages it has over its competitors: the precision adjustment screw and the standard/metric scales to name two. I’m looking forward to putting this too, to work!
Without my router plane I would not be able to build guitars the way I do. They are incredibly useful tools, and I think every woodworker should have one. I quite like your design, I may pick one up in the near future.
Dude, that is the best looking router plane I have seen. (Only been woodworking for a few years so I haven’t seen them all.) if my wife would let me I would order one just for the measuring gauge. But it looks rock solid too. I will get one eventually but I am drill saving for Still a 5 1/2 plane.
I've been building our new house for like the last few months and I don't have a shop at the moment but I also have a brand new router plane that I haven't even had time to play with. So I enjoyed the video thanks
Happy woodworking Jonathan and greetings from Australia. I have been watching your channel for a while and finally remembered to subscribe. I love the variety of topics and projects you create. Your workshop is a great backdrop for your videos and you did an amazing job on the router plane. Regards One Handed Maker
My deep dive into whether to get the Veritas or the LN led to this video, and a purchase. It seems like it combines the advantages of both with the addition of the depth gauge.
Based on what I saw in the first video, the KM sharpens like the Veritas. The blade mounts to a bar which goes into a honing guide. Those like LN are 100% by hand.
Looks like an awesome router plane.....congratulations Jonathan! I'd really like to see you do a short video on sharpening the blades on your router plane since they are a unique design.
I just received my router plane and can’t wait to try it out. I actually have a project on my bench right now waiting for me to try it out! It looks great with very solid construction and serious attention to detail. One suggestion… perhaps some type of plastic cap to protect the blade edges? Thanks for all the great videos!!
I remember when my router plane first arrived. It was every bit as satisfying as I'd hoped. Might even be my favorite tool. Hope you like yours as much as I do.
Really fantastic tool, Jonathan! Amazing work! 😃 You choose the brand very well! They really make some fantastic stuff! Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
You should sell an auxiliary base, preferably transparent acrylic, already predrilled for the router. I've been meaning to make one for my Veritas but procrastination prevents me.
Is the depth adjustment quick release? Like open the adjustment screw and allow the cutter to bottom out instead of turning the adjustment screw and feeling/seeing the plane moves when it bottoms out
I'm searching for a router that will cut a binding ledge onto a guitar for edge binding. The channel is usually about 2mm wide and 5-8mm deep along the corner of guitar bodies. Could this tool to it?
Fine adjustment is a GREAT selling point.. I have a veritas router plane. I always struggle with the fine adjustment. Wonder if JKM router plane is compatible with Veritas blades.. Thanks!
This tool is currently on the top of my wishlist. I am curious about one thing. A few months ago you and Tamar worked together on a trim router base plate. You mentioned using a base plate with this router plane several times. Does the 3x3 trim router base fit using pre existing holes in the base plate. Would you recommend using these two together? Thanks. I am very excited about this router plane.
I love lee valley tools, but I've put my veritas router plane up for sale and I'll be upgrading to a JKM. It looks like an improvement and I'm excited to try it out and support your hardwork Jon.
I ordered this the other day. My big hope/concern is the blade stays put. One reason I ordered this one (kinda embarrassing to admit) but it’s just pretty, plus the fence comes with it and it’s bigger than the LN.
I have the Veritas Large Plane, I am curious as to what advantages this will have over it. I already ordered so Im sold, but what can this plane do that I can't do with my Veritas?
They have the full capability of making exceptional products. The reason they are associated with poor quality is because most manufacturers outsource overseas to get something made cheap, therefore the materials, tolerances and quality control are all minimized to keep the per-unit cost as low as possible. It’s generally not the mainland’s fault for turning out an inferior product, it’s the domestic company’s fault for specifying an inferior product
Are you guna be adding extra cutters for your router plane. I’ve been wanting to buy a router plane for a while now. I heard you were coming out with one so I waited. I don’t have much money but when I purchase a tool I make sure n purchase quality tools. I really like the features of your router plane but I like that veritas has extra cutters. I don’t want to buy the wrong one and be sorry becuz I can only afford one
I had a question. Where is this made? Anything that is made here in the U.S. I want to push and support in every way we can, and the adjustments this has it should definitely go to the top of the list for sure! Thanks
China. I'm sure it's very well made, but this was a big factor in why I bought the Veritas router plane (made in Canada) instead. And Lee Valley's excellent customer service / return policies.
This looks like a really cool router plane...but is the date on the website right? or did I just read it wrong: "6-10 weeks from 9/26". Does that really mean 6-10 weeks from Sept 2026? Or was it supposed to say Sept 2023?
I ordered from KM Tools and never received my order. I've used website help and email multi times and never received response. I have not located a phone number to call for inquiry.
@@jeffestep7762 Thanks for asking. I forgot to update. I did receive several emails in response. Apparently an informational email about status of plainer delay was sent out but I never received that email. Because one item delayed all my order was delayed. I did receive my partial order. I needed it for a Christmas present. I was given the option of paying extra to expedite shipping which I did but due to bad weather did not receive in time. The irony is that the backordered plainer arrived three days later. Everything ordered in good condition and tho given late was a huge surprise and appreciated.

@@leroy5007 I think it ended up taking a month. Nice planer and I’m happy with it. Happy to support Jonathan and his business, so I should have had a bit more patience instead of expecting Amazon behemoth monopoly. I much rather support the little guy.
Great advice and tool. At some times the camera was moving around quite a bit and it started to trigger motion sickness. Hard to follow precise movements when camera is floating.

It really is the best
Was gifted this tool by my wife. Absolutely beautiful and can't wait to put it to work.

I have nothing to say really, but I appreciate your content, and wish to help with the yt-algorithms.
Bought it the morning it was announced. I imagine eBay is going to see quite a few used router planes go up for sale once these ship
🤣 whoops
Could you please make a video on how to sharpen those blades? Especially that corner blade. I want to buy one.

Which one came first? This one or the Veritas one which looks identical?
Veritas. This is just a Chinese version with his name on it.
