This video was such an answer to prayer. As an experienced nurse for 27 yrs I had never heard of this surgery. I asked several of my coworkers and they had not either. I looked it up and here it is. First video that showed up. My sister had a coworker that had this surgery and was not sure if there were side effects due to the coworkers behavior a week post surgery. The coworker is also on dialysis. This video helped me guide my sister to get her coworker to call her doctor. Thank you so much and God bless you and your family.
This is likely due to 1st the parathyroid gland having a capsule around that needs to get disrupted in order for a new blood supply to form to it. Secondly is the cube-squared law (i.e. the relations between surface area and volume). If you cut the gland into small piece, there is more surface area for new blood and blood vessels to access the gland relative to the volume and there is less of a distance that the parathyroid hormone, nutrients, and waste need to diffuse in order to reach the circulation.
@@DoctorRex hello doctor i am from india ..could you re-implant parathyroid gland after surgery?...Recently my mother underwent total thyroidectomy 15 days ago..now the doctor told to take calcium tablets for lifelong otherwise life threatening conditions will occur like that ...he haven't told it before...could you tell me is that implantation possible? Please tell me please..i don;t have any one other than my mom.please reply me
The title of this video should've been.... Things that defy evolution. Absolutely remarkable. Where can I find more information about the process of inaddition (I think spelled that right). I was told that's the process by which the parathyroid gland reattaches itself to the body and becomes functional again, but I can't find any documented research on this process.
At Duke I do at least. July 1st to August 2nd. This is the shortest it's ever been, typically it's more like June 15th to August 2nd. Yes, I'm a little bitter about that lol.
I just had a patient who had the same surgery, and I was wondering what was the purpose of putting parathyroid in his forearm, this is very interesting. Thanks for sharing!!!! 😊
I just had my parathyroid surgery 3 weeks ago. All four of mine were bad. Therefore my Dr. Chopped mine up And implanted into my left forearm. My question is how long before my new parathyroid starts working? I still have all the symptoms that I have suffered with for years. We are having difficulty getting my numbers balanced. I go in for blood work several times a week. Am I ever going to feel well again?

I had thyroidectomy 35 days ago my parathyroid gland is not working doctor said my parathyroid gland is not removed Yet now my parathyroid gland is not working I don't know whether it will work in future or not, I am very tensed
I have secondary parathyroidism, and just had a Parathyroidectomy done. My surgeon implanted one of my glands on my forearm. I'm in so much pain but definitely worth it!!

What is the advantage of slicing it into many small pieces versus putting the four individual parathyroid glands intact in the forearm ?

@@DoctorRex Thank you Rex for taking time out of your busy day to answer my questions. You're the best!

How is the implanted Parathyroid gland vascularized? Angiogenesis?
BTW this is a great video. I wish I would have found it pre-surgery.
Do you have a summer break when in med school?

How could I get more information to have this done?
