Welcome to my channel! First off, I'm not actually a doctor (yet), but you have to be the first to believe in your future before it can happen. So calling this channel "Doctor Rex" might just be a reminder for myself every time I see it more than anything else.
I'm currently a second year medical student at Duke University on my way to becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

I know there are a lot of videos out there describing how to tie surgical knots, but I could never find a video that I thought was optimal for how I wish I had learned how to suture, so I decided to make that video.
I originally learned very quickly how to tie knots on shoe laces by watching videos on youtube of people doing so. I thought I was decently competent at knot tying, so I was in for a rude awakening when I first tried to tie knots in the operating room with gloves on with actual suture material. I never found a video that showed the details of how suturing with gloves on with a fine thread must be done differently that with a pair of shoelaces. There is value to first learning with shoelaces, but you must practice with gloves and suture if you want to truly become proficient. I hope you find this video helpful and efficient for learning! Feel free to share with any other learners.

Hi I'm not in College that's why I'm opting for undergraduate degree what to do ?
I can make delicious peanut butter sandwiches with no crust. It is really cutting-edge stuff that I am doing.
Best breakdown of majors for premed I've seen on here. Subscribed
is it good to major in something science based and minor in humanities?
Wow this was amazing.
is there any medication for increased mmc in ibs Patients ? I m suffering from ibs for past 2 years but has no constipation or diarrhoea but all tests are normal still have unexplained weightloss and due to which i have dermatitis on scalp and face whatever i eat feels like growling sounds start just after eating and when food reaches duodenum starts to move more quickly as in stomach leading to multiple nutrient deficiency i repeat every single test is normal ! Can it be ibs or depression in small bowel???? It might sound funny but can it be the case ?
H pylori is a legion of demons 😂

That rent is so low, not sure that’s realistic 😢
For some reason, the all-knowing algorithm brought me here. I watched part of your video because I was once offered a fellowship at Duke but decided to go elsewhere. It was an impressive school and now that you're a senior, I think you would confirm that impression. In my own med. school class, there were engineers of various sorts, a mathematician or two and even a music major. They all did well. The fact is that most admission committees don't really care. They do like to see continuous academic improvement and high MCAT scores. I started out as a not outstanding student in college but improved each semester until I was always of the dean's list with a 4.0 for the last 2 yrs., including a post-doc. course. Then I aced the MCAT with no special prep., etc. Nothing that I learned in college was of any real value in med school at all. Think about it: It has to be that way. Students have such varied backgrounds that the faculty cannot assume that you've already mastered anything. That's a good thing. So, don't worry about it. But if you don't interview well, that will be a significant problem. Practice if you must. You have to be able to communicate effectively in grammatically correct English. Med. school is a great experience. It's not difficult but it is tedious sometimes. The hard part is keeping up with medicine/surgery after you finish your training and are busy practicing, teaching or doing research. The best to you all!
I'm a combat medic, and I'm very interested in paramedic /nursing, but I do possibly see myself as a PA in the future. Do you think I would have an advantage in getting I to mwd school if I go the nursing route or paramedic route?
Thank you so much!!!
Very informative
Your introductory part was superb
What about a green beret?
If you are desperate, look up Slipping Rib Syndrome. Continue to look for a dr. That will believe you.
Dr. Rex I commend you for being curious and realizing we don't know everything about the body yet. I have suffered, and i say that lightly, for years. I was told yrs. ago during manual therapy that I had a subluxation. This was from a respected doctor. It is horrorible pain. I have respiratory issues all the time. It always hurts to breath. When the rib goes out I get a charlie horse around rib cage ending at sternum. I am always in pain. I have terrible back spasms. I have also have had undiagnosed stomach problems. I just came across UA-cam channel of thoracic surgeon, dr. Adam Hansen. So worth watching all of his videos if you are curious to learn more. I have been to many doctors across many specialities. I think all of my symptoms are coming from one problem. The problem is not one doctor seems to be able to connect the dots. Specialities allow for misdiagnosis. All drs. Should be partially trained in all specialities and continue to work together.
Do you think a biomedical engineering double major with psychology minor or a psychology double major with biomedical engineering minor is better? My first major is english literature and i am qualified to choose whichever i want. I just can' decide what would be better for med school applications.
Denail is when they "nail you with a denial" :)
I just stumbled upon this video after being recently diagnosed with a mental illness. The fact that so many medical school warmly received this gives me a lot of hope that I can also talk about my struggles in a way that make me a strong candidate for my top choice schools. Thank you so much for sharing this! It has given me an immeasurable amount of increased courage and confidence.
U became a doc or not yet

Invaluable information re: different cognitive styles of reading. I am definitely more of an auditory learner myself and will try the 'little voice in my head' reading approach.
thank you thank you thank you! will be looking for more of your secondary videos. theyre so helpful!
I got my MD in 4 years with a $250k student loan. and paid off it within less than 4 years after getting my first job as a MD. Why do you want to spend 8 years doing the MD/PhD when you can finish the MD in 4 years with a loan and afterwards earn around $1 million in 4 years ??
thanks for the information! it's very helpful. do you have any advice regarding professors who have you write your own letter?

You a doctor yet?
What about molecular Biology?
For everybody asking about neuroscience, I am a neuroscience major and yes it's a good undergrad major for pre-med, that's actually what many neuro students go on to do. I'm taking all the same pre-med prerequisites courses but I'll actually be getting my PhD in neuro to work as a research (or industry) scientist not a medical doctor. Also, Neuroscience/neurobiology is a offset of biology(not psychology) with specific focus on the brain/nervous systems. The prerequisites courses for psych are NOT the same and generally tends to be an easier degree because it's considered a "soft" science so it may not adequately prepare you for med school. Even if you're planning on going into psychiatry, neurobiology as an undergrad degree would be a better choice.
I plan on being a psychiatrist and majoring in Neuroscience starting next semester! Do you have any tips or things you wish you knew? Can anyone really do it if you’re disciplined enough?
Interesting. An M.D. might give you more career flexibility than a Ph.D. There are also combined M.D./Ph.D. programs. But I'm sure you've considered those.
@@wholeNwon if you're interested in being a medical doctor perhaps, but this video is talking about what undergrad degree to pick to get into medical school. Personally I have no interest in practicing medicine, I'm going to be a researcher which is why I'm getting a PhD as opposed to an MD. Totally different career.
@@misslayer999 Believe me, I do understand. I know several M.D.s who never intended to practice and never did. But they found their backgrounds very useful in research and were sought after by various companies. Anyhow, all the best to you.
@@wholeNwon yes that's right for something like clinical research, which also involves working with patients. Regardless that's not really the topic of the video or what I was talking about because this is about undergrad degrees, but thanks
Is this student housing at duke? Or private apartment community?
you are handsome
Amazing writing and very helpful thank you for sharing!!!
I want to know What kind of job are you eligible to apply for if you graduate from a premedical program in Canada
Informative video! Also I really like that stage coach on your desk.
This is craziness. You put computer science and math over nursing and biology. I strongly disagree with your video.
I had it done but for me it was the other way around as I had tricuspid atresia. Unfortunately I got PLE now 💀
Very helpful video! Thank you!
I had a fontan in 1992 (at the age of 9) I am now 41. I agree, the fontan is an awesome piece of cardiac surgery - it gave me life!
Brilliant personal statement. I appreciate the honesty behind sharing your experience with depression. I also have it and your experience of pushing emotions away as a weakness in high school hit all too close to home
You forgot music💔
Amazing and moving
Blessings and good luck in your future medical career
I just discovered your channel and noticed you hadn’t posted any new videos for the past two years. Are you taking a break due to your busy schedule as a medical student? Not sure if you still read comments from viewers. Excellent content
God bless you!
Good jobs ❤
Your advice on every video I watch of yours is the absolute best. Concise, organized and informative. Praying med school is going well for you! Thanks for giving back to future medical students in this way
