  • IIT Bombay Struggles to Place 36% Students | Vantage with Palki Sharma
IIT-Bombay is yet to place almost 36% of its students in the ongoing placement season. Other IIT campuses in Delhi and Kanpur have reported similar problems in the last few years. Despite being India's top engineering college, IIT Bombay is struggling to secure jobs for more than 700 out of 2,000+ students who registered for placement. This has raised questions about the condition of India's job market and the value of an engineering degree in these changing times. United Nations data suggests that India's graduate unemployment has reached almost 30%. What can students do to better prepare for this changing job market? Is it time for you to rethink your degree? Palki Sharma tells you.

Many talented students who do not attend IITs can still innovate because technology is accessible. If you become entrenched in IIT JEE preparation for at least 3 years without much room for creativity, you may lose the motivation to excel. Many creative students may not gain admission to IIT, but they can gradually become more valuable. When we extinguish the joy of learning and focus solely on seeking outcomes, happiness will not last long. Let kids learn to find joy in learning.

Sir, the quality of IIT, IIM & AIIMs have degraded in last 10 years. The teachers & principal of IIT's opened by Modi govt are not selected through merit. You can ask to any students studying in newest IIT's colleges or Old IIT's colleges. The chancellor and Vice Chancellor of many Central universities belongs to RSS which have no educational background. Previously, IIT teachers selection required double Phd's. But, now a days any uneducated person can become teachers of IIT college. That's why today's graduates of IIT are of very low quality and less knowledgeable compared to old IIT students. Modi govt has even increased fees of IIT which makes poor students very hard to get admission in this reputed colleges. Unemployment has hit record low in last 10 years in our country. This govt needs to go out😢

Don't make innovation a sexy thing. Research and innovation takes a lot of effort. I am not saying that research and innovation should be left behind. But It should be right balance of every thing. Can you think an iitian's pov they gave whole day for two years to prepare for one single exam. And, you are saying make btech a PhD thing and after giving 2 years for clearing IIT then give 5-6 years day and night to innovation thing. Certainly. Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) are popular for long-term investments due to their diversified nature. ETFs offer exposure to a wide range of assets, such as stocks, bonds, or commodities, which can help reduce risk. Some top choices for long-term investing include broad market index ETFs, sector-specific ETFs, and bond ETFs, as they provide potential for growth and income over an extended period while minimizing the risk associated with individual stocks.

How student will get industry skill when they bunk their labs and not do assignment. In Western universities they take their lab and assignment very seriously. You have to not only attend but also perform and show to get marks and also submit assignment on time. This is only difference in education system. You will be surprised to find the private tier 3 engineering colloges in India faculty may teach better than reputaed university professor in Wester university.
In western university professor spend time on finding topics for assignemnt and student are force to do assignment and lab. The same professor may have number of publication but his teachinh style maybe super boring.
In India the same professor spend time making notes, giving notes to student, teaching in class.
The priority is different and result is unexpected.

@@91rummy In western university you will also find similar things like 65:35. No one will come and tell you what to do. If you are not able to finish experiment in class time than go into lab in off time and try to finish it. The point is Indian system do not force student where as western system student are forced to perform and behave on their own risk. See this is where self learning comes in and start creating difference. Indian system do not promote self learning and western system create difficulty to force you to go for self learning. Student should be serious to attend the lab even the instrument are olds and management should force student to attend the lab and also perform experiment and show. At the end of day this is only thing which create huge difference in productivity. I have studied in both system. So telling from experience. I do not understand why people when asked about difference write phd thesis instead of explaining this is a single point. I am not criticising you so please do not get offended.

It is their passion and perseverance despite all odds made those institutions great.
MBA fellows are a burden to the society taking up most of the resources and contributing least to the society. Better to close all MBA institutions. We don't need MBAs .

One important reason is that more IITs have been created by the government in the last few years and therefore more undergraduates are passing out from those IITs. Companies hire the best from those IITs also thereby creating placement problems in the old IITs. When there were only 5 IITs, companies’ choices were confined to those 5. Now they have a wider choice and the supply is more than the demand. The problem is similar with respect to the large number of engineering colleges created in recent years with the hope that those passing out from such colleges will find employment in the ever expanding IT industry. This was also a wrong move.

Let other small engineering college people do jobs. If they are not doing these things, then all these spending on these technology institutes is waste.

Many companies aren't recruiting at their usual capacity; those that previously hired 10 to 12 students now only take on 1 to 2. JEE toppers choose to go abroad for learning engineering over IIT , this does say a lot . New IIT's are being opened that is fantastic...but not much is being done to bring IIT's to todays requirements.
    1. There is no industry exposure during the 4 yrs of Btech. Most abroad courses have at least 1 sem dedicated to this . Even hotel mgmt courses in India have an industrial training embedded.
    2. The courses are not being added as per latest trends . Rightly said about AI . Most countries have moved to integrated branches like Mechatronics, Infotronics , Photometry etc but here we have traditional courses still. These traditional ones are good but dont fulfil todays industry requirements.
    3. I m not sure how much of research is required to be done in a Btech course in IIT. But abroad eveyone has to write a graduation thesis/project.
    4. The number of professors in IIT's is highly under the requirements so of course , proper mentorship is missing.
Its about time that some major focus is given to overhaul the system else this shoning jewel will loose its sheen very quickly

@GH-mj2ti then why do foreign investments have risen under Modi Govt ?
U need to do some research on why companies favor bjp/nda ruled states like Gujrat, Maharastra over communists/left ruled states like West bengal, bihar.
Quite an irony that u mentioned beurocracy interference, yet have no idea that it's Modi Govt, which has reduced beurocracy in businesses. He transferred the defense manufacturing factory from West Bengal, where communists thugs have their Red Flag over the ONGC factory & used to harass the scientists & employees. Now, under Modi, the same factories produce defense equipment & for the first time in Indian history, India exported over $2 billion of defense & have also got orders of 94 thousand crore for 2025.
It's funny that u compared China with India while u liberals mostly against autocracy, but companies love politically stable country, since China has only one party, it is far stable than India with over 100+ parties.
Also business need infrastructure, hence Modi Govt will be spending about 8 lakh crore in modernized infrastructure in upcoming years.
Go to Mumbai or Varodara, capitalist govt vs Kolkata under communist govt, the difference is day & night.
Now, your Messiah, German Shephard, a former AAP it cell video editor won't tell u those because that's not an education channel. It's a leftist political channel. U don't know these facts because u live inside a cult where your German communist leftist prophet tells u what is truth, what is lie or whom to watch, whom to not watch (so insecure) & u follow him blindly.
U need to watch proper education channels that deal with GK/GS/CA, etc. like all upsc aspirants do.

This video is a blessing for students who enjoy dynamic learning and yearn for creativity and innovation. Degrees going out of fashion is common. You need specialised skills and the ability to update yourself to survive the world we live in today. That's the ultimate way to summarise it. There's a reason why Mr. Sahastrabudhe, the erstwhile chief of Nascom, said that most Indian engineers are unemployable. The era of degrees is gone with the waning of govt jobs.

The employment rate abroad for Technical graduates is 100%, with decent amount of salary. IITs lack world class faculty members, which demotivates students to be skilled at par with students from other countries. And Bachelor's degrees are not considered as higher education. PhDs are. Here is the point. We have more number of unemployed PhDs than IITs with Bachelor's degree. India should utilize it's PhD holders at its best, which can help impart quality education in turn.

Hiring a passionate engineer from tier-3 college has higher ROI than hiring a hard working guy from IIT.
Hiring IITians are costly and the value they add to the company is less compared to hiring a couple of folks from other college for the same price as a single IITian and getting them upto the potential. Companies seem to have realized this fairly recently and its the reality.

The problem is in the mindset of students, they think if they are graduate of iut bombay then they only deserve the job of 4 crore, less than that hurts their ego.As they have secured top rank in jee advanced they are prodigies why would they study in college isn't the 4 years preparation enough for entrance 😑

Damn the firstpost and many others got this news wrong, IITB had an unemployment rate of 6.1% in 22-23, all in all nearly 57% were placed in jobs, and the rest did not sit for placements ( some went for startups, UPSC, foreign education, while some got jobs out of IITB ( maybe due to better opportunities))

Not all companies goes to IIT for placement due to the high salary range. Only probably ~30% of the companies would go for placement. Currently the movements are relatively low across the Industry and hence the intake is also reduced.

Lets face it. The Indian education system is based on cramming up and not on the basis of skills. Education system needs to be revamped.

Without having practical knowledge of a subject we will lag behind

Wondering how come nobody talks about the quality of the input before talking about the output.
As of 2022, the percentages of student seats reserved for each category, for undergraduate (B. Tech/B. Sc. programs) stand at:
    GEN-EWS: 10%
    OBC-NCL: 27%
    SC: 15%
    ST: 7.5%
In addition to this, 5% of seats of each category (including OPEN) are reserved for Persons with Disability (PwD) candidates. The seats are also of two pools - Gender-Neutral (80%) and Female-Only (20%). If a female fails to get her seat in Female-Only category, she gets admitted via the Gender-Neutral category of seats. Supernumerary seats were created to reach the 1:4 gender ratio requirement in 2018.

@@gaurav3290 Unemployment is altogether a different topic. Here the concern is about the quality of education which has a significant impact getting & creating employment. It's not just the less-qualified teachers but meritless students too. We are giving more preference to inclusive criteria of students from all sectors (caste/minority/religion/gender) than their actual qualification. These students are future employees of govt/ private sectors including those chancellors /vice-chancellors of Indian Institutes. All I want to see from govt is support whichever category of people but NOT AT THE COST OF QUALITY & EFFICIENCY. If somebody is not well equipped to learn, provide them the tools & material but the qualification mark should be the same for all - NO IFs AND BUTs THERE. As long as no govt talks about it, this vicious cycle repeats. I don't see either BJP or INC or any other third front would come up with such arrangements due to fear of loosing vote bank (for sure). I strongly believe INC will do even worse looking at their minority appeasement politics now-a-days. Afterall INC ruled for decades, still no proper reforms in educational institutes, instead it became worsened to a level that no party at state or central govt would dare to talk about it.

Very well said..people should move on with specialised courses instead for the common degrees. But in our country universities should give a proper direction to this.
