To add to Scott’s point, the journals of Roman generals in Northern Africa, including that of Julius Caesar, describing the shore areas of Northern Africa as “a jungle”. Now that biome has undergone immense climate change and desertification over the last two thousands, but it was never what we would currently refer to as “a jungle”. Not only are narrators unrealizable, but words change meaning sometimes within one generation.

I'm a end game ESO player and a elder scrolls lore fan and i agree with you guys, and they have added very good lore like, clockwork city, elsweyr chapter, fargravn, etc. But most of the lore is really shallow, i honestly see it as a good MMO with a elder scrolls flavor, not a true elder scrolls game.

Too many fantastic things happen to too many people and the second I see another player my immersion takes a dip. It's a good MMO and I enjoy my time with it but it is not a good Elder Scrolls game.

There's a part of me that wouldn't mind in the slightest if they released a spin-off game dedicated to fleshing out the civil war and showing a more detailed portrayal of the conflict and the consequences of the war. Skyrim does an okay job at conveying the effect of things, but overall seeing more of the direct damage through world encounters or something similar would have been nice.

      • Open Civil War: lets sides take holds back and forth from each other, gives you an optional way to play it like a board game, and lets you make military decisions to start missions whenever and in whatever order you want.
      • Warzones: requires some caution, tooling, and possibly some patches, but makes the conflict feel more active and present by placing skirmishes between Imps and Stormcloaks, Thalmor, Guards and Bandits, etc.
      • Civil War Aftermath: allows the player to kill camp commanders and burn them to the ground, as well as adding scenes where enemies of whichever faction have been hung to serve as an example.

Paarthurnax openly admits during the main quest line that he struggles daily against his own nature. A nature that will undoubtedly over rule him, when he seeks to enforce this tyranny on the other dragons. Something that he says to the dragonborn when they come back from skuldalfin. And Odaviing doubles down on it saying, "But I doubt many will wish to exchange Alduin's lordship for the tyranny of Paarthurnax's Way of the Voice."

    • @colt9836

To be fair, Odaviing says "tyranny" because to him, Paarthrunax's teachings goes against dragon's inborn will to conquer and control.
"We [dragons] were made to dominate; the will to power is in our power. You feel this in yourself [the Dragonborn], do you not?"
It's like a rebel teen saying that rules are tyrannical; the reason why Paar survived so long is because he is able to resist his draconic instincts. The Greybeards saw that that he is truly good and wise beyond mortals, so they protected him.

What's wrong with Morrowind's combat aren't the mechanics themselves it's the sound design and combat messages. If instead of a "whoosh" there was just a much quieter than normal "thud" and "your attack missed" was changed to "glancing blow", it would immediately be 10x better.

    • @gabrielinostroza4989

There's this Skyrim mod called Strike Obstruction system that makes timed blocking extremely important and it has rather over the top effects like sparks and a loud CLANG play every time a block is performed at the right moment, followed by a slight knockback and a stagger, if you can make the feedback not only clear as day but also very satisfying to hear you'd hear zero complains from people imo.

    • @NamelessKing1597
      @NamelessKing1597 2 роки тому +3

@@gabrielinostroza4989 The mod True Armor lets you give different armors a percent chance to fully deflect different types of damage and that also plays a CLANG. That's what I was kind of basing this criticism. I literally downloaded a mod that brought chance to hit back but because of the sound design and the fact It's based on armor instead of character stats it's actually an improvement over vanilla armor rating imo (which I actually keep on top of it so perks still work).

    • @gabrielinostroza4989
      @gabrielinostroza4989 2 роки тому +3

@@NamelessKing1597 I know of that one as well, mods show that Skyrim has the basis for a combat system that isn't just wild flailing and damage sponges, it just needs a "game within the game". Morrowinds' missing made it so your combat ability hinged on stats so your main concern was raising those stats, and the game was an RPG in the purest sense that what you could do depended on the character build more than your own skills as a player.
While i don't think Skyrim should go back to that entirely, systems like strike obstruction and true armor make me feel like skill, level and difficulty could be conveyed that way instead of making difficult enemies hurt more and have more health, things like stronger enemies swinging weapons faster so they're harder to time blocks for, they'd start dodging and bashing and truly feel more skilled than level 1 enemies, and that would be something you would have to either bridge the gap in level with your own skill or go grind.

BIG BRAIN TIME: THE EBONHEART PACT:
The EP makes perfect sense if you actually think about about it for 19 seconds. Unlike the DC & AD which is comprise of the nations & therefore races of High Rock, Hammerfell, Orsinum, Valenwood, Eslweyr & Summerset.
Instead the EP is NOT comprise of the nations of Skyrim, Morrowind & Blackmarsh. It is comprise of the Holds of Windhelm & Riften. Because the rest of the Nords & Skyrim as a whole is currently contested ground. Whether that be Solitude & it’s High King, Reachman in Falkreath & Markarth or the rest being independent with leanings to one of the other major players.
Morrowind, only the houses of Redoran, Hlaalu & Dres are active members both Indoril & Telvanni rejected the pact entirely. With Dres still having Khajit slaves.
And Black Marsh itself isn’t a member at all. Only SOME Tribes within northern Black Marsh have joined out of mutually beneficial economic & cultural purposes. Mainly it allowed the Argonian people to free nearly ALL argonains currently enslaved within Morrowind to be freed & return home. Which is something the Hist would want. And increase trade for said tribes.
Unlike the Queen of the AD & the King of DC Jorunn has extremely little authority within the Pact. With the Argonians loyal to the Hist & Dunmer to the Temple & Tribunal & the ruling Houses therin. Jorunn is the defacto military commander & little else. And all of them still maintain their own tribunal & house armies.
The EP in terms of military is more of joint operation to strengthen each other to their benefit. Jorunn with the sack of Windhelm was at the total mercy of the Reachmen & High King of Solitude. The Argonians get thousands of their people freed & returned & some tribes get to make fat stacks from Hlaalu & bolster trade routes. Redoran gets a massive relief since they won’t be doing all the heavy lifting being the only house that actually protects Morrowind & Hlaalu makes fat stakes all around.
Also Also, EP is advancing in Cyrodill to reject & prevent Imperial influence & stop Mannimarco. Not to claim the Throne & conquer like the other two.
This has been my TED talk thank you.

How to fix the game breaking crafting loops: place hard caps on how much a crafting skill can be improved.
How to keep enchanting viable while also having unique items: make the unique items actually unique. (We use spellbreaker because it has an awesome unique feature, even though you can make better shields)
Spell crafting vs Hand-Crafted Spells: just make a bunch of Hand-Crafted spells to fill the different niches and make them feel unique.

The Skyrim magic system is under rated when compared to Morrowind and oblivion. It does have less spell variety but a lot of the spell variety we got in oblivion and morrowind were spells that only applied in niche situations that you would hardly ever use. Like spell absorb 15pts or resist magic 20pts for 20 seconds, or having 4 different restore stamina spells with different magnitudes. You would only ever learn a spell like that so you could enchant your gear with it for an actual useful passive effect.
Having things like that relegated to perks gives you the useful abilities and also gives your character the feeling of becoming more attuned/powerful in that magic school. Like I’m so good at restoration my healing spells also restore my stamina, I’m so good at alteration I passively resist magic, my conjuration summons are more powerful and are bounded longer, my destruction spells now stagger enemies etc.
Now I would like things like touch spells, mark/recall, spell reflect etc. back but I would like them applied more in the Skyrim system as opposed to the morrowind and oblivion systems.

The magika compromise is to do what Scott says, add in a ton of handcrafted spells, but then include a system of spellweaving. Using a Tome or a desk, be able to set up a 1-4 spell combo of similar cast types(channel, instant, etc), so you could create a full bound armoury, or send a fireball along side a paralysis spell. I think this could also alleviate all the damn pause switching of spells, part of the annoyance of being a mage in skyrim is only having 2 spells, and the two quick selects before having to use the favorites menu for pause and play, with controller at least.

I think you're both right about spellmaking, it does have it's place, but can't be a replacement for the whole magic system. A good compromise in my opinion would be a quest explaining that the mark of a great mage is crafting his own signature spell, so as a reward you would be granted this ability to craft your own signature spell, but just one. You could change it at a cost, but could only 'carry' one at a time. So it would be something unique to your character, more like a Power instead of a simple spell.

What it really kind of sounds like you're talking about when it comes to the Nordic pantheon being imperialized seems more like the way the Romans handled things when they invaded an area and took over. When the Romans expanded into new areas and conquered places with different religious ideals they incorporated that regions religion into their own. Such is the wonder of a polytheistic religion, all of the gods in the Roman pantheon would become associated with a specific god from that regions pantheon. Like with the Greek pantheon, the Roman Jove/Jupiter (ruler of the gods) became associated with Zeus (ruler of the gods).
The same thing happened in Egypt both when the Greeks conquered Egypt under Alexander the Great and later on when the Romans did the same. Zeus and Jove became associated with Amun-Re because he was the ruler of the gods. Thus and such. This technique of associating the gods with each other and blending them together made it very easy for Roman society to incorporate and assimilate many different regions and was a part of how their empire grew as far and as fast as it did.
Like you guys were saying, this very same thing occurs later on in history. Christianity adopted a similar feature into its religious make up. If it hadn't it wouldn't be nearly the dominant world religion it is today. In their function though, the gods of those various pantheons subsumed by Christianity became saints and angels instead of becoming other versions of that pantheon's gods.
There's a reason you don't hear much about Celtic religion and druidism in the same way you hear about the Norse, Greek, and Egyptian. In part that's because a lot of their stuff wasn't written down, but it's mainly due to the fact that many of the stories of saints you read about from the European middle ages and kingdoms started out as the stories of the gods the Celts worshiped.
Gods above this comment turned out much longer than I expected it to...
TL;DR it's a fuck of a lot easier to conquer a new place if you incorporate their religion into yours than it is to try and do it the other way around. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

I think the take regarding the Elder Scrolls being useless is not exactly correct. When you have something with Godlike creation capabilities you cannot overuse them because it destroys the mythos behind it.
The scrolls have the power to rewrite reality. We just forget them because it basically only happens one time in every game.
The Gray Fox questline is probably one of my favorite uses of an Elder Scroll. This incredible thief is now cursed and when he puts on the mask of the fox his normal persona is written out of existence. So when he takes off the mask and walks around people act like he's Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life" He used an Elder Scroll to rewrite himself back into existence and be with the woman he loves.
That is powerful writing and shows the power of the scrolls. Yes, the whole point behind prophecy is to defy destiny or to make it twist in a way that favors the protagonist/antagonist's needs.
There is a reason the scrolls are revered to me as they represent a potential future and past and they along with my character are what cause the dragon breaks. We are the Elder Scrolls. In Tamriel the players are destiny.

People who complain about the "math" in games like (early) ES games need to actually try them. Seriously. We're all made of the same stuff. You might just find yourself spending seven hours building your character's biographical *and* numerical basis and not regretting five seconds of it. Even if you don't, that's where you get a game world this good from... logic, attention to detail, and cohesive building. There's a reason why the streamlining and simplification of the game accompanies inconsistencies and general reduced quality in the lore and the writing. There are loads of games and game worlds out there which lack this level of attention to detail; leave those of us who enjoy something a little more involved our handful of holdouts. Not everything needs to be dumbed down.

Easiest way to add spell crafting is to cap the max damage based on total Magicka and spell skill level, pick an element, pick a range (touch, range up to x feet, aoe up to x feet, innate damage or dot), these spells could easily be lower than your master level spells you're a master spell caster not a master spell crafter it takes waaayyy longer to craft a new spell than to cast one.. although to that effect could just allow spell versatility for each spell.. like each spell can be used as touch range or aoe this would really only apply to on target spells so not cloaks or defensive spells although I will say a ward bubble would be cool.

Possibly Hot Take: The Thalmor are the most interesting thing to happen to the high elves, period. It turns the exaggerated, snooty caricatures of classic elves into an interesting (if 1 dimensional) interpretation of the "Elves are superior" trope. They should've been a joinable faction.
While I'm at it, more racial distinctions in the game would only be a good thing, even if it restricts access to certain quests or even areas. The Khajiit being unable to enter the city should be extended to the player until you prove yourself to be trustworthy or sneak your way in. High Elves, and maybe even ALL elves, should be restricted from joining the Stormcloaks. Unfamiliar Bretons in Markarth should be viewed with scrutiny and suspicion (since bretons and reachmen are basically the same race). And if there are elven factions in the next game, maybe it should be very hard, or damn near impossible, for you to join if you aren't an elf.

    • @Evarakeus
      @Evarakeus 2 роки тому

Agree on everything except elves joining Stormcloaks, there's no real reason why that'd be the case. In real history, African-Americans and Native Americans joined the Confederacy against the Union, as well as Indians, Africans, and other joining the Axis powers, both for the sake of trying to shirk centralized, foreign powers from having authority over them (Native Americans for instance were repeatedly screwed by the Union both before and after the Civil War, while India and Germany had a common enemy in Britain). While intuitively, these alliances might seem odd, they actually make plenty of sense, just as there might be cases where it would make sense for Elves or Cyrodiilics to join the Stormcloaks against the authoritarian state that is the Empire

The world would seem more alive if different towns and cities had festivals or holidays that would be celebrated. IE your character shows up to Riften and they are having some kind of celebration based on the local church. Periodic Harvest festivals in villages, secretive deadric cults holding nighttime rituals in the deep forests and caves. A local Lord having a banquet giving you an opportunity to attend as a guest or thief. Weddings, traveling troupes, and circuses, playhouses, traveling Justicars judging people and giving sentences. Not sure if these count as hot takes, but here are some of my opinions:
    1. Bretons are an underrated race since they represent what could happen if men and mer tried to "get along" instead of constantly trying to conquer the other. That and I like the medieval Europe theme they seem to have going on.
    2. Magnus is an underrated god. Helping Lorkharn/Shor build Mundus/Nirn but getting the hell out of dodge when he realized their magic was being drained is pretty interesting. The fact he also left behind some relics like the Eye of Magnus, which may or may not be one of his actual eyes, adds to the mystery.
    3. Since Kalpas are a thing, I wouldn't mind seeing another cycle for a reboot.
    4. The Dark Brotherhood is overrated. Maybe it's just me, but being a hired assassin doesn't sound interesting. That and I'm still not sure how Sithis fits into the cosmology.

My hot take is that Oblivion was the look of the Elder Scrolls. Strip away what the engine couldn't do, like make an actual face, and just look at the world. The use of vibrant color, the look of towns and structures, a fair amount of armor and weapons. I never had a problem with the high-fantasy vibe or the worn paper ui because I wanted to get lost in a fantasy world.
I like Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim for their own reasons but I always daydream about how Morrowind could have looked in Oblivion's art direction. I remember doing Morthal Vampire quest and getting infected, just letting it fester despite how easy it to cure it was interesting watching yourself mutate into a Vampire and figuring out where you go from there.
I could of cured it but i really enjoyed watching it just go and enjoy abit of the madness.

My hot take is that Nerevar never fought Dumac, instead they were having a diplomatic meeting when dagoth stormed in with wulfhart in demand of the heart then Almalexia betrayed his husband and a huge battle ensued that end up with Wulfhart killing Dumac, Nerevar killing Wulfhart, Almalexia killing Nerevar and finally Kagrenak triggering the Red Moment by using his tonal arquitecture on the heart

Alternatively make skill/role progression tighter so you really have to choose between being a powerful warrior, wizard, craftsman, or scholar without being able to do all at once.

I've got one (potentially hot) take on the bit about the Imperialised Nordic pantheon cuz it's very close to my personal uni studies: For one, the comparison to the Christianisation of Scandinavia is kinda shakey from the get-go because between related politheisms you'd see a much more complicated mixing of the traditions that would always retain at least some trace of the old beliefs which is obviously completely different from the (nearly) complete replacement you see with an exclusive monotheism like Christianity. I suppose you *could* argue Thalmor pressure is the reason they're a bit more hardline about it, but that would be a stretch already and would still require some lore-tweaking to really make sense, so that's one reason you should see more of the old Nordic beliefs than just a handful of bandit voicelines and the Sovngarde episode at the end of the main quest.
But even if you do accept that the Imperials would even want to put any greater effort into completely assimilating Nordic religion into the Imperial Cult, in a period of transition like that you would actually see more of the old tradition and not less because the people that do still believe in it would of course take not of and issue with the change and communicate that more or less openly. You do of course have that to some degree with the Stormcloaks, but they don't even talk that much about religion to begin with and when they do, it's only about Talos - can't recall a single line from a Stormcloak expressing disappointment that people seem to forget about the importance of Shor or something like that. Plus, you'd see a lot more people like Balgruuf who are sympathetic to that sentiment without necessarily following the political call to arms.
So yeah, TL;DR: if you wanna argue with realism, it's actually really stupid the Nordic religion is all but completely Imperialised during the events of Skyrim

I don’t know if it’s hot take or not but I thought of a theory today on Aedra and Daedra. Also don’t know if it’s crossed anyone else’s mind, but my theory is that the reason the aedra (ex: divines) don’t manifest towards mortals in the same way as the daedra (ex: princes) do/can is because men and mer alike have forgotten the possible darker side of the aedra. As in we don’t see the full entity therefore they can’t or won’t manifest themselves to mortals.

I played it a lot when it first came out (buggy as it was), but I didn't care for the MMO aspect. It got too expensive. I stopped playing before many of the expansions were released. Aesthetically speaking it was very cool, and I enjoyed playing it because even though it didn't feel like a real TES game it was still TES content and it was all we were getting.

Actual spicy take? Cryodiil was still largely a jungle in Oblivion in the classical sense. A jungle wasn't always a dense, largely unsettled, warm-climate forest. It was just a swath of untamed temperate land. A grassland could be a jungle for most of history (which is how we "in the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight" when lions don't get themselves into forests) and a swamp could be a jungle, and a moderately populated hardwood forest could be a jungle. Y'all are mad it wasn't a jungle, when reality was even sadder. It was a disappointment jungle, and that is worse than it not being a jungle at all.
