What's up fellow film enthusiasts and welcome to another genre suggestions. Okay, so I'm gonna be covering Roman films for this week, and the reason why is after finishing last weeks Revenge films. I thought I'd go for something on a larger scale, so I did a coin toss on either space operas or Roman Epics. And ofc Romans won.
So the rules for this video are quite straightforward; I'm not going for anything particularly historically accurate. As long as the film has Romans doing Roman things during the times of the Roman Empire, then I'm happy with that. And as always I'll have a link to my amazon storefront with all the other movies I've recommended over time.
List for TL;DW or otherwise known as hemomancer cheat sheet.
Gladiator 2000
Ben-Hur 1959
Spartacus 1960
Agora 2009
Quo Vadis 1951
The Fall of the Roman Empire 1964

Dragon Blade 2015

I would like to see caligula
How about Military Dramas??? Things like 'The Last Valley' & 'Night of the Generals'!
Do we have an 'Epic Greek films' video yet? That would be great
Maybe another dark comedy one? Theres still so much untapped potential
Always liked the Rome themed movies.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I was hooked. Maximus, we love you.
You should do a "epic british empire movies" as there are some classics to draw on like gunga din for example.
Oh kool idea- I'm thinking stuff like Master and commander and Zulu.. movies like that.
@@Hyperdriveuk Yeah then there's charge of the light brigade, four feathers, zulu dawn(different to zulu),gandhi, lawrence of arabia,etc...just so many great ones.
"Agora" is a wonderful film...a real great one
Perfect timing for this! I'm almost finishing Dan Carlin's podcast "The Celtic Holocaust", and was looking for some good Roman Empire themed movies.
A solid list. Cleopatra and The Life of Brian probably deserved a mention, plus at least one of the countless peplum films just to represent that entire Roman subgenre.
But what did the Romans ever do for us!
1:52 I always thought the ramming speed drummer was awesome. Lol
I love the classic epics! Unlike modern films, they embraced the rich colors. Today people look down on exaggerated acting. It’s a major part of theater and gives grander scale. It’s a style of acting that goes back to the beginning of time. Now historical and western films put me to sleep.
Well said- I couldn't agree more!
I concur.
The exaggeration is what gave a very specific definition to character.
I myself am a B horror film fan. They used to convey the "victims" as party goers, loose cannons, smoking the reefer, out the town with shenanigans . You know.. .show that they deserved it.
Now it's just some chick in a dark alley shooting up for 20 mins with absolutely no dialogue.
The playful candor is gone.
Suggestions on Templar movies please.
I've already kind or done that with Crusader movies. It's an older vid, but the films are solid.
Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) is definitely the best in that field in my opinion, Ridley Scott hitting a double whammy by having both the best Roman Empire film (Gladiator) and best Templar/Crusader film, then having the greatest sci-fi horror film of all time (Alien), one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time (Blade runner), one of the greatest war films of all time (Black Hawk Down), one of the greatest Napoleonic war films (his debut film "The Duelists") etc... really goes to show how much of a master of his craft Scott is.
@@Hyperdriveuk Thanks Hyper. I'll look for it!
Hey, you forgotte the MOST FAMOUS ROMAN of all times - JULIUS Ceasar! - 100 to 44 bc. - Cleopatra I and II was THE classic roman movie and a masterpiece of the genre!!! - "Cleopatra" recures more to historic facts than every other of the roman movies!!!!
Agreed! While TREMENDOUS liberties are taken with the story... It paints a vivid picture! & one should see it for the Star Power alone!
Not a movie, I know... But I got to throw 'I Claudius' into the mix! That series (along with 'Cleopatra') jump-started my fascination with Classical Europe!
Spartacus is underrated? It won 4 academy awards. It's pretty highly rated.
What, no A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum? ;)
Something For Everyone!
Yes! He raped Thrace! And he did it again and again!
That premise for "Agora" sounds absolutely ridiculous haha... a female philosopher, mathematician, atheist slave owner in the heart of spiritual knowledge and Gnosticism of the ancient world at the time... probably the most historically inaccurate thing you could put into the film without giving the character a machine gun.
It's based on the life of Hypatia - a real person; with a decent amount of history recorded about her life. The film plays on a myth about her but it works for the broader point of the film.
@@Skiltonius Thanks for the info. Just read up on her, she was a Neoplatonist, the complete opposite of an atheist. Neoplatonism is one of the most legitimate spiritual/philosophical traditions out there, based on Plato's later work (of which none survives save for references by later Neoplatonists such as Iamblichus etc..) into metaphysics after he had been initiated into the mystery schools of Egypt.
@@Skiltonius Hypatia was real, not the events of the movie.
@@Michael_the_Drunkard Depends which events you mean, a number of the events did occur to a lesser or greater extent - although certainly not in the timeline presented by the film. For instance Hypatia's death by a mob appears to be a factually accurate event, whereas her actually being at the library during its sacking is highly unlikely.
I have all these movies on DVD and more. I have a soft spot for movies centered around ancient Rome. I know you don't do TV shows but if you did I would include the HBO series "Rome" and the Starz series "Spartacus" as well. Neither series is that long and both are easily binge-watchable.
I suggest you watch barbarians on netflix
The most unusual Roman Theatrical Epic of 2020 is a spectacle in the grande tradition. -------------------------------------

What is the film with the Roman army marching through the desert at 0:47?
King Arthur (2004) was an enjoyable movie.
Well there's always "Jupiter's Darling" with esther Williams (yuk, snort)

@Hyperdrive
I've been ruminating on an 'undiscovered genre' (to my knowledge anyway), maybe you could help me define it better or use it for your channel if you like.
It's about really living on the fringe, forgotten and left behind by society, with the crap and detritus and refuse almost taking center stage, like the unkemptness of the houses in Gummo, with bugs literally scurrying away from behind the paintings, or the Italian family in Ugly, Dirty and Bad living in a slum that's on a literal dump site. Maybe this is a genre that has already been defined and I just don't know about it, but I have never seen them grouped together, nor can I come up with more examples than the following.
I would call the genre 'Squalor', or maybe 'Deplorables' and it would include:
- Gummo (1997)
- Ugly, Dirty and Bad (1976) (Brutti, sporchi e cattivi)
- Flodder (1986)
- Chappie (2015) and moreso Umshini Wam (2011) would fit too; the whole Zef aesthetic created by Die Antwoord actually.
and possibly:
- Black Cat, White Cat (1998) (though not sure if it's very pc to conflate this genre with 'gypsy culture' or if it even really fits, although there's an element of gypsy themes in the Dutch film Flodder too, also it's been over twenty years since I saw BC, WC)
- Pink Flamingos (1972) (I haven't actually seen this but it might fit, included to give you more of an idea of what I mean, mostly)
Hmm you could be on to something - I find what makes determining a genre tricky is how important is the visual aesthetic towards the theme. Cyberpunk is high tech low life (my fav example as it's so straight to the point). I guess to help narrow it down, you need to be able to describe it in one sentence. I'm having the exact difficulty with movie trope videos.
I want to do a whole series on them and how their misused but I can't get my head around how to project those ideas. I'm getting that same vibe when I read your comment haha! This is why I set-up the subreddit for questions like yours!
@@Hyperdriveuk Thanks for your reply. Can't find that subreddit lol, only one about that B grade British SF series of the same name, but I'm not on reddit so might be my noobness. But thanks for your encouragement on my suggested genre.
Man I wish movies would have correct latin in them like the German show Barbarians
so basically Gladiator and Spartacus....
What about the other 6?
Great to show the movie in the bottom.
OK going in, im going to be very disappointed if The Life of Brian isn't on this ep. as it clearly meets the requirements!
EDIT: is that.. is that John Cusack? OK, so there's no Python, but I did learn about Dragon Blade
Can't believe you put "Dragon Blade" on that list ... Like seriously WTF!!!
I'd watch em
Dragon Blade? really? Umm.. maybe The Robe or 1963 Cleopatra or even 2004 King Arthur
I'll leave a like for Agora since roman films seem to not be my cup of tea.
Historically inaccurate anti-christian movie.
A great list...cheat and add HBO'S Rome too
1 more
MF Doom is Roman??
TFW no Caligula
Open your eyes, Proculus! Command in the name of the senate-OPEN THEM!-the senate, and the people of... Rome!
Unpopular opinion: Gladiator is one of the most overrated movies in recent history. It's pretty much copy-paste of Spartacus' story with some hollywood zing thrown in, first act is mind numbingly boring with no real character development, and a villain that feels like a cardboard cutout. Only good acting and cinematography saves it.
Well apparently what we do in this world does NOT live on in Eternity!
It also has good editing and score. I agree it has a weak script.
I love Agora...! The rhythm and poetic philosophy towards science and religionS... I love it
It's an eye opener if you are caught in the cage of traditional christianity.
It's historically inaccurate. How is this crappy movie still taken seriously? Don't watch this movie before researching the truth about these events in actual historical sources.
@@MatthewQuigley hey fat edgelord, go back to r/atheism!
This list really SUX
Really. Ok, let us see your amazing list of Roman Epics? Put your money where your mouth is- rather than just saying "things suck".
