@28:02; Wait, hold up - Janice from Accounting isn't just a stock photo image model? Interesting point: If the quantity of metal or metal alloy used to make a penny is always going to be worth more than the face value of the coin itself, then why does it have to be made of metal? I may well be missing something here, but what law or regulation exists which requires penny coins (or any other coins) to be made of metal at all? Historically the reason to have metal coins was precisely because of the value of the metal they are made from: Hence why gold or silver were originally the metals of choice for coins, because the value of those metals gave them an intrinsic value (in terms of price per unit mass) equivalent to any other object made from gold or silver of the same purity, regardless of the denomination embossed on the coin, aka the "face value". There are still some coins made and/or used today which function in this way - the most well known example is probably the krugerrand, made in South Africa from gold mined in that country. However, most coins used today function in the opposite way: The value is assumed or agreed to be equal to the face value, regardless of how much it costs to make the coins, what metal or alloy they are made from, or what the value of the metal itself might be. In which case it does not (or at least should not) matter what the coins are made from, so why not make them from a cheaper, non-metallic material? This does not seem to be a problem for banknotes, the value of which has never had any relationship at all to the material they are made from. After all, some countries have switched to making banknotes from plastic instead of paper, which made no difference to their face value. Even for coins, this would not be unprecedented: After the end of World War 2, the availability of refined metals in Germany was severely limited, so at that time, some coins were actually made from porcelain, and these were legal tender in Germany at that time. So it certainly seems possible to make coins out of cheaper materials - there is no technical reason why this cannot be done, and it is clearly economically feasible too.
The simplest answer I can think of is something to do with how well the material would hold up to many, many repeated uses and abuses - with metal being rather more sturdy than alternatives like ceramic or plastic. But, like, honestly, I think it would be better to just get rid of the penny than to try and find a cheaper material 🤷🏻
A bit of an oversight. He should have said what that half-penny they got rid of in 1857 would be able to buy today(or rather, when this was made). It had the purchasing power of 18¢ in today's money!
Good to know! That means we could get rid of the penny, the nickel, AND the dime and still have circulating currency with more precise purchasing power than the set of currency to which we moved in 1857! The quarter really DOES feel like a good baseline, doesn't it?
